For the seniors. the gracious memory of cherished friendships, stellar achieve- ments, and of so many happy hours spent in joyful fellowship and endeavor. For the underclassmen it holds the promise of so many things that have yet to come. We shall always remember this, the first year in our new school, as the acme of our high school career. It is with this thought in mind that we, the yearbook staff. give you the TAWASENTHAN. May it serve you well as the memento of the year of 1955. '71-'mr-'fvf v . DEDICATIO To our ambitious principal, we dedicate this edition of the Tawasenthan. His endless labor and services to his students, and the school have been shown in the development of our wonder- derful new high school. He has shown not only knowledge but also sympathy, understanding and guidance. Today we lay a laurel of tribute at his feet. The Class of '55 is proud to have one of its members carrying out such an important school job so successfully. ,ll 1. .tax i 153 'F' ,f.f 'Zx, .wi-.5 nf- pf la CLASS HISTORY , As the Class of '55 resolutely entered the vine- covered facade of Altamont High School, not one of us dreamed that we, as seniors, would be the first class to graduate from one of the most modern schools in the country, Guilderland Central High School. It is a privilege of which few can boast and one for which we are sincerely grateful. Let us look back at some of the memorable events that have played such a part in our school lives. We cannot help feel strengthened by the spirit of co-operation and closeness that pervaded these past performances. Remember our freshman year! The first important occasion for us was the election of class officers. Guid- ing the class as President was Persis Parshall with the able assistance of the Vice-president, Myrna Kent, Secretary, jack Mabie, and Treasurer, Dianne Arm- strong. Our delegates to the Student Council were Bob Quackenbush and Carol Unright. As Frosh , we were especially proud of our class hats. XVe remember with nostalgia the amateur show and the carnival. In january, our new Prexy was Iack Mabie. Rounding out the executive board were Myrna Kent, Vice-pres- identg Marian Rochon, secretaryg and Dianne Arm- strong, treasurer. Wfe concluded our memorable year with a picnic at White's Beach. With our freshman year behind us, we went up another rung of the ladder to our sophomore year. Early in the semester, we elected Carol Unright as our class leader. Her hardworking assistant was Barbara Catalina. Joanne Gerard proved to be an able notetaker as secretary. Our new financial genius was Marian Rochon. As delegates to the Student Council we chose Helen Mattice and David Ward. Our maior activities for the year were a hayride, movie, and dance. The class was honored by the election of two of our most able athletes to captain the basketball and baseball teams for the 1953-1954 seasons, Bob Quackenbush and james Gardner, respectively. Our Junior vear was our last in the hallowed halls of Altamont High School. Soon after entering in September, we elected class officers. We chose as our President, john Meyer. As Vice-president, we elected Marian Rochon. james Canavan served as secretarv and Myrna Kent as treasurer. Leonard Ditton and Verity Pulliam represented our class on the floor of Student Council. We can all look back proudly at this year, as we recall the junior Prom. Reigning over the Para- ...Julian dise Prom as King and and Persis Parshall. In our Moonlight and g a particularly hon when Ryan and Dianne Armstrong speaking contest. We wound up at Thacher Park, thus ending eventful year. In our Senior vear, we left A.H.S. behind and entered the land Central High School. Upon many new classmates in our bert Rudinski, was promptly treasurer. Other class officers identg Bob Quackenbush. chon, secretaryg and jack Mabie representatives to Student Council.. months of the vear. we greeted students from The Netherlands, Ann Kan. The Grid-Ghost Halloween-Football dance, was iors in an effort to get better new classmates. A Senior Play vim! duced by the Class of '55. We are eager anticipation to the swank 0 complete our final activity at Huh School. As we now approach the glorious school days, the Class of '55 a dawn of tomorrow. Even now as the on our high school career, new We, the Class of l955, now pass of this magnificent school. We go and in an upright manner, fully task which now lies before us. Sometimes a word or two will express however, in this instance, words are indeed to express fully our sincere thanks and all those people who have made our stay memorable and fruitful experience. To our Principal, our teacher, our parents, the zens of our school district - we say a verv Thank you. To you, the undergraduates of land Central we say: To you from falling hands we throw the tori. Be yours to hold it high. SENIOR CLASS POEM Graduation is drawing near, Which brings to close a glorious year Of friendship which is, oh, so dear, And knowledge that can ne'er appear. Old Altamont High we entered in, As freshmen who could not begin To realize that our school within, The walls were very, very thin. Summer had gone and fall arrived, Exams were tough, but we survived. As sophomores we would always thrive To keep together the class of fifty-five. Our Junior year we could say, Was as light as the bright of day. Our rings we ordered were on the way, And after that-we had our play. ' And then at last in fifty-four, The walls of Altamont would be no more. Instead we entered in the door Of Guilderland which we all adore. Then as seniors the time went fast. Winter had gone and spring had passed. The moment had come for us at last Commencement night had come to pass. Then down the aisle together impart, To get our diplomas before friends depart. But forever we will hold in our heart The memories gathered from the start. The National Honor Society is made up of students from the junior and senior classes, who have maintained a high scholastic standing :ind .ire out- standing school citizens. Students who meet the academic requirements 190 aver- age for the first two years of study or 85 average for the first three years of studyb may be elected to membership by the faculty on the basis of their leader- ship, character, and service. The society undertakes various projects, which will tend to improve and cn- rich the school program as a whole. The project for the '53-'S-i school year was the raising of funds to enable two Dutch students to spend their senior year at Guilderland Central High School. LIZZY-ANN KAN 17-year-old Lizzy has endeared herself to all G. C. H. S. students since her arrival here in America in October. Being very musical, she got into the swing of things here at school by joining the High School Mixed Chorus. Since then she has also joined the Girls' Chorus and the Madrigal Singers. It has been a wonderful experi- - ence for the students here at G. C. H. S. to know Lizzy. q,, , QP' fr? fl Q -my--' oisiuur Huis Gerrit was the other Dutch student whom the Honor Society brought to Amer- ica. During his stay at G. C. H. S., Gerrit was a member of Key Club. He also could be found selling ice cream and milk during lunch hour in the cafeteria. The students here have surely benefited by meeting and knowing Gerrit. 55 UNIQIR H0 0B UCIETY Front Row: A. Palermo, R. McCarthy, R. Case, H. Taylor, B. Hohenstein, H. Wright, H. Mosher, B. The Junior National Honor Society is an organization that has recently been inaugurated here at GCHS. It is chiefly through the efforts of Mr. William Cornwell, faculty advisor, that this group proves to be an effective counterpart of the Senior High National Honor Society. Pupils in grades 7-9 are selected for consideration by a list of specific qualifi- cations. Those eligible for membership must maintain a scholarship average of not less than 85W. In addition to this, the candidates are rated on Character, Service, Scholarship, Leadership, and School Citizenship. Members of the faculty determine the final choice of students, selected for admittance. The recognized goals of the Junior National Honor Society include an enthus- iasm for a higher scholastic standing, an encouragement for students to render service to the school, and a stimulus to develop strength of character. 56 ..... ' KEY C History will associate the school year of 1954 with the word first. Along with our new school came many new and interesting ideas. One of these was the for- mation of a Key Club. The principle object of key club is serviceg service to the individual, school and community. These clubs are closely allied with and sponsored by Kiwanis. Key Clubs are welded into one smoothly functioning, com- plementary unit by a strong central organization known as Key Club International which supplies mem- ber clubs with vast quantities of valuable literature and other important material. In january, a gala celebration was held to mark the reception of the charter, the official birth certificate of the club. Dur- ing the year the club has undertaken many projects to render service to our school and community. Here's an organization that will begin to leave a permanent impression on G. C. H. S. and the com: munity which it embraces. It is the most vital aim of your Key Club to make the word service synonymous with its name. Clcllnntl. R. Rutlinski, -I. linrins. Tfvirzl Rnux' M. The purpose of this trip was to help the girls of the school to get better acquainted. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Without the Athletic Association many things in our school wou1dn't be possible. Under the capable of Editor John Meyer, the first issue of The Dutchman-32 pages-came out on February I. tured in the first issue were the history of basketball at G. C. H. S. by woman sportswriter, Dianne Amt- strong, and the heart :ending polio story by Jitsu Canavan. The June issue of the magazine no doubt will be every bit as great as February's. Praise and congratulations are in order for John Meyer and his excellent staff, especially the advertis- ing staff who tried desperately and finally succeeded in securing enough ads to finance The Flying Dutch- ffliln. Singing for the first time in four parts, the mixed chorus made rapid strides as it sang for the dedication of the new high school, assemblies, concerts, and programs with the grade choruses. The group is planning to compete in the spring festival program of the New York State School Music Association. DOUBLE QUARTET The Double Quartet are singers selected from the High School Chorus to represent the school at a state-wide choral clinic. This clinic was held at New Paltz on March 18 and 19. MADRIGAL SINGERS BOYS QUARTET The Madrigal Singers, Senior High students, sing five-part music and par- ticipate in the music concerts. The Boys' Quartet was formed by four boys who enjoy singing and could not fit Chorus into their schedules. They performed at various school functions. GIRLS' CHORUS Front Row: A. Acker, D. Liszer, N.
