Text from Pages 1 - 256 of the 1984 volume:

NOUS SOMMES ACADIENS WE ARE ACADIANS We are Acadian — probably better known as Cajuns.” Being Acadian makes us unique . . . unique because our roots have been planted on two continents and three countries. First, as Vikings, we settled in western France. Then we fled across the Atlantic to Acadie, Canada known today as Nova Scotia. Forced by British occupation in I7 55 t0 a sentenced exile, our most adventurous ancestors migrated to the already flourishing French city of New Orleans. A few stayed there but most moved on to settle north and west of the big city ... along the rivers and bayous so familiar to our area. For more than two hundred years now, farmers have reaped bountiful crops from the rich soil. . . fishermen have extracted brimming catches form our waters . . . and in keeping with our heritage, the largest portion of these foods find its way to our crowded tables after masterful enhancement true to the Cajun cuisine: etouffee, fricassee, bisque, gumbo, sauce piquante, jambalaya, boudin, gratons, fromaee de tete, bain berdu and patates douces. jo r r Our faces, like our music, songs and literature, are moving. Like Longfellow's Evangeline” they tell of long separation of loved ones, heartbreak and hardship. But they tell, too, of true love, friendship, neighborliness, coming home and success. '1 he faces of our generation, much as our Acadian ancestors, confirm an undying optimism born of a deep, abiding faith in our way of life. The language we speak comes from the French spoken in our motherland during the seventeenth century. Sometime we borrow our words from our English speaking neighbors, and they laugh at our patchwork dialogue — but we don't mind, after all it’s our nature to laugh at ourselves. Though in years to come, many of us may leave the farm and village for the city ...we will not leave our Acadian ways behind, for we are proud and loyal to the memory of our Acadian forefathers who left us such a priceless heritage to pattern our lives after. es, it is a joyous thing to be an Acadian, celebrating life in our numerous traditional ways — keeping in mind when times are hard our motto, ,Laissez les bon temps roulers.” 2 Table des malieres. We the Seniors of 1984 were lucky enough to find two people who were not only willing to give their time and energy, hut they did it without expecting any pay. The help they've given the school is deeply appreciated. They were always there when FHA. 4-H, FFA, or any other organization was in need of their help. Their help was given to us not only in our senior year, but it started during our freshman year. They helped raise the funds we needed to finish our years at Gueydan High. They supported the band, even though they didn't have any children in band, they provided transportation to parish meetings, they helped chaperon dances, supervised the making of our floats, and donated articles for the Senior class to raffle. They have not only given help to the students, but they helped the faculty just as much. Without the help of these two very special people our class and our school wouldn 7 have reached the goals it set. This dedication is just the least we could do to repay their given love. We the Seniors of 1984, with much love, cledicte our yearbook to our adopted parents, Mr. Mrs. Joseph Breaux, Jr., better known to us as Mr. Jake and Mrs. Aline. 4 Anthony E. Rizzuto Renford Abshire Message To The Seniors The need for education has never been so great as it is today. In addition to gathering knowledge, education has given each of you a better chance to look within and search for your own identity. The number of graduates in any graduating class is not indicative of each individual's ability. This class of 1984 is small in numbers but high in talent and achievement. We here at Gueydan High School wish you continued success and happiness throughout your future life. Anthony E. Rizzuto 6 7 he job of the Bruin Staff is to pull together memories from into book form. We have learned to be good sports even in the face of defeat. But something happened this year to turn our losing streak around. When football training began over 50 boys showed for practice as compared to a previous 5. Although this was an obvious signal as what was to come, the newspapers again predicted a losing season of 9 and I. We proved them wrong! Gueydan marched through the season and ended with a 7 and 3 year. Of course people don't see this as a winning season, but we at GHS know that our boys put forth great effort to bring home these victories. It takes time, energy, spirit and courage to be a football player. It takes a special talent. We at Gueydan High wish to recognize all team players for their outstanding performances. We're proud to belong to the school which support the Bears! 57 ilUtIUAN HIGH SCHOOL 1983 DATE 11 12 11 15 11 18 11 21 11 25-26 11 29 12 1-3 12 5-10 12 13 12 16 12 19 12 28-31 1 3 1 6 1 10 1 13 1 17 1 20 1 24 1 31 is® 2 3 oa naaLaII «ii OaLaJ L to A-i-d AiQ Anthony Rizzuto, Head Coach, Linda W. Lavender Watson had 12 points in the win for the Bears. His brother, Marvin, added 11 and Kurt Istre chipped in with ten. Elroi Simon was the top scorer for Midland with 19 points. Our Best Friend The value of a trusting friend I never really knew Until I chanced one lucky day To find a friend like you. It seems to guide my every step And every deed I do To know that I’ve a loyal friend To tell wishes to, For friendship brings a state of mind That manifests a peace, A warm glow of happiness, A meaningful release. If friendship strengthens as it grows, The years that are to be Shall be especially blessed, friend, With joys of you and me This poem is intended for Mrs. Marlene for her support and guidance through the years of high school. We love you. The Bruin Staff ■ Shall he especially blessed, friend, With joys of you and me This poem is intended for Mrs. Marlene for her support and guidance through the years of high school. These twelve years have been a long and trying time for us. If it were not for you, our parents, we would not have reached the goal we had set at tht first day'when we started school. You gave the encouragement and guidance needed to complete this rewarding accomplishment. You have given us also the pride inibeing able to say, ’’you made it possible.” We can nevaJbegirUto repay any of what you've given us. This is one debt that will never be apayed. When we became freshmen the responsibility of raising money was put in our hands. The money raised was to be spent on prom and our yearbook. This is where we found friends we didn't think we, the Srds of '84,” had. The biggest part of raising the money came from our Junior Bar-B-Que. A special thanks goes out to Mr. A.J. LeLeaux and his helpers for donating their time for us and expecting nothing in return. Mrs. lidolia Williams also gave her time unselfishly in helping with the candy sales. We would also like to express our appreciation to all those who helped chaperone for our dances and the making of I our floatshe time you gave us is tremendously appreciated. Once again, thank you for the time and effort you gave us.i Love always. The Seniors of 1984 . %' mappe v cadi an a. W think it's pretty special.
