Alma Mater Our Alma Mater — Dearly praise. She is our Guiding Light. Her Spirit we will keep always And colors red and white. For when at last our school days o'er And time goes fleeting by. We'll cherish her forever more Our dear old Gueydan High. THE BRUIN 1975 Volume 22 Published by the Senior Class Gueydan High School Gueydan Louisiana Foreword As the 1974-1975 school year draws to a close, there are many things that each student holds as a dear memory of Gueydan High School. Things have not always been as you wanted them to be, but all things have many times worked together for the good. Now as you go your separate ways, not knowing if happiness or sorrow will cross your path, hold the thoughts of your days spent at GHS as the happiest days of your life. Turn to this ram- bling structure which houses the best of students and adults and simply say, Thanks for the memory. 2 jy tcccjijfdL IThnrurtLSu yt, U QamAadLuru Y djZ inJjLj 7 a.cAuul _ jjuyrUUtA .57 H’M ,, V M 7 W( V of 3I i 7 JyThio 175 3a lrrr uti 7f7 Tl m- i r £ £o£ o-Cu Miss Lucille Saltzman Dedication There is a certainty in this lady Who is unafraid to share herself with others. Unafraid to become involved in the Candid life of a student. This certainty she lives Is the Christ she teaches. She engages with vitality Her learning and teaching life We admire the way she approaches its problems and she is our example. We aspire to be like her As she is like Christ. To her we dedicate this book In an attempt to return some of the respect that she first gave us. We, the Senior Class, wish to recognize the woman who has been the greatest asset to Gueydan High. We proudly dedicate the 1975 Bruin to Miss Lucille Saltzman. A little bit of then 41 ; • iM o We' catch you in the act. CLASSES Mr. Hoffpauir’s 3rd hour English III class. English ENGLISH: All youth need to grow in their ability to think rationally, to read and listen with understand- ing. The study of English is par- ticularly adapted to help youth achieve qualities of good per- sonal living and social compe- tence. Coach Gardiner's 1st hour English II class. English I, 1st hour. English IV, 2nd hour. 16 Sheryl, is English IV that hard? Advanced Composition, 3rd Hour. Miss Lucille helping Mike in English IV. 17 Typing - 3rd hr. Commerce Commerce is a business course of exchange, buying, and selling of commodities, and particularly, the exchange of merchandise between different places or communities. All youth need to know how to pur- chase and use goods and services intelligently, understanding both the values received by the consumer and the economic consequences of their acts. Typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, and business English make up this particular cuniculum. Bookkeeping - 6th hr. Typing - 5th hr. Mathematics Mathematics is one of the most useful and fascinating divisions of human knowledge. It helps us in many important areas of study and has the power to solve some of the deepest puzzles man must face. Youth needs to develop sound understandings of funda- mental mathematical processes, to be able to visualize graphi- cally math expressions, and to appreciate the utility, creativity and power of mathematics in business, industry, and research. A variety of math courses in our school includes General Math, Senior Arithmetic, Alge- bra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Advanced Math I and II. 23 Speech All youth need to grow in their ability to think rationally, to express their thoughts clearly, and to read and to speak and to listen with understanding. Speech gives its members an opportunity to gain poise, improve diction, promote initia- tive and afford an opportunity for expression through acting or speaking abilities. Now stop that, Lee!!! 24 Drama Three phases of the drama - appreciation, interpretation, and production - are to classroom use in a manner that will prove suc- cessful in actual practice. Each of these phases is thoroughly treated from the point of view of teaching in the special field of dramatics in the high school. 25 I promise to do my best . . . Science Youih need to understand the methods of sci- ence, the influence of science on human life, and the main facts concerning the nature of the world and man. The world of science is a world of curi- osity and imagination. It is a world of systems and of laws. One who is interested will discover the realm of nature is characterized by structure, order, and the most important purpose. 26 Chemistry - 4th hr. Physics - 3rd hr. General Science - 6th hr. But then one morn, it was no joke, Our school was burning; the sky was filled with smoke. Many stood by to watch our old school burn, A building, once mighty, once strong, once stern. It burned to the ground in less than a day; We lost something precious in our own special way. Months went by as our useless building stood, Its appearance was depressing, its memories were good. The lot is empty now - only a grassy green lawn, Remember it always, for now it is gone. We lost our building, it was our true friend, We'll never forget it, we'll never see it again. Ahead lies graduation, proms, summer vacations, summer jobs, and for many the plans and preparations for higher learning and a college education. The 75 Bruin Staff has sought to build a book which will in a special way reflect Gueydan High in 75. As the halls grow dim and the classrooms quiet we hope this book will bring back memories of this year and hold this loving school forever in your memory.
