For when at last our school days o’er And time goes fleeting by. We’ll cherish her forever more Our dear old Gueydan High. Seventy-one Volume 18 Published by the Senior Class Gueydan High School Gueydan, Louisiana Foreword Our high school days are filled with cherished memories. Some we remember better than others, such as that important game we wanted so much to win, our first school dance, the thrill of being a Senior, and, at last, the wonderful feeling of accomplishment when that diploma is placed in our hand. To help us to remember these special moments, we , the members of the Bruin Staff, present toyou, the student body of Gueydan High School, the 1971 Bruin. 2 Table of Contents Dedication.................4 Classes....................9 Faculty...................39 Organizations.............49 Seniors..................109 Underclassmen............137 Personalities............170 V Dedication For guiding us through four years with a deep understand- ing, we, the members of the Bruin Staff, wish to show our appreciation by dedicating the 1971 BRUIN to Mr. Saporito, our guidance counselor. The curriculum in agriculture at Gueydan High has been up-dated in an effort to keep up with the times. Boys in vocational agriculture study basic plant, animal, and soil science during their first two years. Later, their time is spent in more specialized areas as farm mechanics and sup- plies, food processing, horticulture, and management. The F.F. A. provides for leadership training for the boys enrolled. Ford Motor Company - Tractor powered train The Commerce Department offers three courses to those interested in building a career in business. Typing, bookkeeping, and shorthand make up this particular curriculum. Commerce Typing - 2nd hour Bookeeping - 1st hour Typing - 3rd hour Typing - 3rd hour Typing - 2nd hour Typing - 4th hour English The English program plays an im- portant part of the education of the modern student. In high school, four years of English are required. The course consists of grammar, vocab- ulary building, literature, writing, and, of course, listening. English I - 2nd hour English III - 6th hour English II - 6th hour English I - 6th hour English II - 3rd hour 14 English IV - 2nd hour English III - 6th hour English III - 4th hour English III- 6th hour 15 English IV - 3rd hour Mr. Hampton Primeaux Marilyn Roche and teacher Drivers’ Education Teenagers constitute 20% of the drivers today but manage to get them- selves involved in 33% of the fatal ac- cidents, yet teenage drivers are in- creasing at an alarming rate yearly. We must teach our young people that die real prestige is earned by care- ful drivers and not the show-offs. This is the goal we are striving toward in drivers' education in our school. French French Mrs. Guidry teaches us our French. French songs are a part of our learning. French, the only foreign language taught in our school and the mother tongue of many of our ances- tors, is in the process of being revived in South Louisiana. Though French was once spoken by near- ly everyone in South Louisiana, it has been spoken very little in the past few years. Among the peo- ple dedicated to bringing French back to Louisiana is Mrs. Frances Guidry, who teaches French I. Here is hoping that these French students will continue with their study of more advanced French. 18 French students make use of laboratory equipment. Art Beauty must not be lost in this world of automation. The pur- pose of art is that of inspiring people, not merely to look, but to see into the life of things. The art de- partment, under the leadership of Mrs. Richard Sirmon be- lieves that creativity should be a facet of every student. Wheth- er painting an original oil painting or draw- ing a silhouette, stu- dents do use their cre- ativity. Mrs. Sirmon instructing Joey. Masterpieces These must be test times!!! And what are your grades in Home Ec.?? Gordon regrets popularity! Can you guess what this is?? Home Economics Home Ec. is a course offered to all students who wish to learn to be a better homemaker. This year F. H. A. is being brought out in the Home Ec. classes. Each girl taking Home Ec. is a member of the Gueydan Chapter. Mem- bers who pay dues are also in the district, state, and national clubs. The over all goal ofF.H.A. is to improve family, personal, and community life for all. Paula and Martha have no cavities, but what about them? Mrs. Freeland covers dating, marriage, children, cooking, consumer finance, home nursing, and many other subjects which help to make a better person. It deals not only with community life, but also with our duties concerning it. These show what we do when Mrs. Freeland is here, and when she isn't here!! Mrs. Freeland repeating it again!!! Brenda doing her English work!?! Industrial Arts In the Industrial Arts classes at Gueydan High, the instructor endeav- ors to teach the student to utilize his talent. Inside, the industrial arts shop, young men are taught to turn pieces of scrap metal or wood into works of art. Many of these students will go on to teach or to become future road and bridge builders. No matter how small the job, it is important to the indus- trial arts student as well as his fellow man. 22 Auto mechanics is included in the Industrial Arts III class. A finished boat is inspected by Saul Broussard, Thomas Industrial Arts welding. Sonnier, and Wade Cormier. 23 Mathematics is one of the most useful and fascinating divisions of human knowledge. It helps us in many important areas of study and has the power to solve some of the deepest puzzles man must face. Among the different courses of mathematics taught at Gueydan High School are Senior Math, General Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Advanced Math. Mathematics Advanced Math - 3rd hour Geometry - 2nd hour General Math - 4th hour Algebra 1 - 4th hour Algebra I - 2nd hour Senior Math - 6th hour Music Band - first hour Band - sixth hour Band - first hour Chorus - fifth hour Music: To think of music is to think of speaking. In a different media, of course, man's purest form of communication. Music, is action, love, hate, anxiety, joy. The reason is simple. Music is the inside of a man. This, projected, is his highest media of expression: music. Band - sixth hour Band - first hour Chorus - fifth hour Boys’ P.E. P. E. is an hour in which students learn to work, play, and get along well together while enjoying many activities. We learn many games along with their rules and regu- lations. Six weeks are also given to Health, in which we are taught the prevention and symptoms of many well known diseases. 1st Hour You'd think they were posing for a picture or something! I 've heard of a team getting licked but this is ridiculous! 4th hour Speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil! Smell no evil??? 28 Wow! What form! 2nd hour Johnny, are you tickling Donald? Girls’ P.E. Wow! And without a trapeze! As our age speedingly advances there is an in- creased need for scientific knowledge. The science staff ofGueydan High meets this need through its ex- cellent instruction. To them the science teachers, we. the students, express a well deserved word of thanks. Physics - 6th hour Physical Science - 3rd hour Science 30 Biology - 6th hour Physical Science - 6th hour Choral reading; Diane and Jim are hiding, Miss Lucille !!! Speech Oooops! There’s nothing on the screen!! Discussion: Jim does all the talking and Gay listens! Speech Language is our chief means of communication and enters into all levels of our lives. Speech is the exploration of our language, not the grammar and mechanics but the delivery and styles of speak- ing. Under Miss Lucille Saltzman's direction, the Speech class strives to improve its diction, manners and ease of delivery. Gary's conversation, Keep the peace, baby’ General History - 6th hour General History - 4th hour The four courses offered in Social Studies are Civics, American History, World History and World Geography. To produce responsible civic-minded citizens is the main goal of the Social Studies Department. 34 Social Studies 35 American History - 2nd hour Guidance The aims and objectives of guidance are to help the individual to realize his full potential as a per- son. Guidance attempts to help the individual solve his educational, emotional, and career problems in such a way that he will achieve a maximum of satisfaction in school, in life, and in his life's work. It tries to help him to be a worthwhile individual who is capable of achieving his goals in life. Mr. Saporito using one of the many machines. 38 FACULTY Principal Robert W. Linscombe There’s something more than money for successful men to furnish; There's a contribution needed that just dollars can't supply. Those who've sailed the seas of living, Can't fulfill their debt by giving; There is something that just dollars do not buy. For despite degrees and learning, opportunities for earning; This old world is full of problems to be solved. In this land that clothes and feeds you There's a great big task that needs you; You’ve a great big duty to become involved. MRS. LOPEZ MR. SIRMON MR. CLOSTIO MR. SONNIER MISS NORA MISS LUCILLE MR. A Recreational Program and an Educational Program Junior 4-H Club LIZ GREENE Secretary CHERYL WOODS Treasurer AIMEE ZAUNBRECHER Reporter 4-H 4-H is more than getting out of class last hour. It is rather, having fun working with youngsters and be- ing rewarded with a trip to New Orleans and a front seat at a Saints' football game. It is learning that all the work one did making that dress or grooming that horse has just been awarded a blue ribbon at the Parish Achievement Day and a chance to win another at the State Shortcourse. 4-H means competing against stu- dents from all over the parish on your own level and coming out the best of friends. It is all these activi- ties and countless more that make 4-H the number one youth group in the nation. v The meeting will now be called to order.
