The following year, Hawaii's independence was formally recognized by other nations, and foreign capital began pouring into the kingdom. United States influence grew steadily, and in 1887 Americans were granted exclusive flgltfs to Paearl Harbor, where a large naval installation was constructe . , In 1893 Queen Liluokalani was deposed after she re- fused to accept several constitutional reforms. A provi- sional government, mainly under the control of Americans. was established. After President Cleveland refused to fmflf?-Y the islands, a republic was declared in 1894. with Sa l0fd B. Dole, an American, as president. Four years later, under President William McKinley, the islands were voluntarily annexed to the United States.
