Hong Kong lies on the China coast, 91 miles southeast of Canton, and has access to the Pacific. It comprises Hong Kong Island l29 sq. mill, separated by the harbor from the mainland peninsula of Kowloon 135 sq. mi.t, and the New Territories l365.5 sq. mi.t. which include the area between Kowloon andthe Communist Chinese border, as well as numerous offshore islands. Hong Kong harbor is one of the world'-S busiest. Victoria, the administrative center, rises sharply from the waterfront, halfway up Victoria Peak, H1 a curious counterpoint of skyscrapers and refugee slums. Kowloon is a crowded commercial and industrial center. The New Territories are partially under cultivation, however, there are steep hillsides and swamps that have never been developed. The climate is subtropical, and there are occasional typhoons. More than 989.5 of the people are Chinese. China ceded Hong Kong Island to Great Britain in 1842 following British occupation during the Opium War. Kowloon became part of the colony in 1860 under terms of the Convention of Peking. In 1898 Chlbtfll leased the New Territories to Britain for 99 years. The Crown colony is administered by a governor, aided by an Executive Council and a Legislative Council: the latter comprises Europeans, Chinese, and Indians. The colony's location, deep -water sheltered harbor, abundant labor supply, and free -port economy have made it an important center of trade, commerce, and industry. The textile industry has become the largest single manufacturing activity, but there is other light and heavy jndusny' and figbing is important. Much food, electricity, and ztater come from Communist China. A large tourist industry has developed.
