The population of Thailand is 31,750,000,' 9092 of the people are Thai. Unique in .Southeast Asia, Thailand - once called Siam - 11115 nez-er colonized by Europeans. Friendship uith the United States began in 1833, uhen the tu'o nations signed a trade treaty, thg L'nited States' first in the Orient. In 1965 the L'.S. Air Force began using Thai bases for operations against targets in Vietnam. The hub of Southeast Asia, Thailand braces against incursions from neutral neighbors lBurma, Laos, and Cambodiat. Com- munist guerrillas cross her borders with arms for insurgents - especially along the 550 mile Mekong River frontier with Laos. Boats from Laos bring in ueapons and instructions for the Corn- munist terrorists operating in the northeast section of Thailand, the main trouble spot. Here government influence is ueak, 9,000,000 farmers are trying to make a living on land that is often dry and unsuitable for farming, and refugees from North Vietnam and Laos are easy targets for Communist subversion. The trouble in Thailand has followed the typical Communist prescription for a war of liberation , Southeast Asia style, and in the face of this threat to Thailand, a traditionally independent kingdom, the United States has increasingly supplied military and economic aid to train the Thai armed forces. In spite of the reality of armed incursion and insurrection in Thailand's border areas, the city of Bangkok reveals only signs of rampant prosperity. Countless shops uith their consumer goods and luxury items emphasize the economic success being enjoyed by Thailand. What u ere once klongs filled u'ith boats are non neu' roads jammed with traffic. Thai imports from the United States rose 11092 last year. To keep up u-ith the ever increasing flou of tourists the number of hotel rooms in Bangkok has doubled t0 5.000 in a year. Largely an agricultural nation, Thailand is blessed with rich land and a plentiful supply of water and other natural resources. The combination has enabled Thailand to become the u'orld's biggest exporter of rice as well as a leading exporter of materials such as rubber, teak, tin sugar, corn and fibers. q. tourists fam the wateru ay on their nay to sep fl, C' f'1Ot1lI'I1g yyjgykgf. we l . 1 , . ,O 1 flnuhile, one of the natives, oblw10US me 'GSI of the uforld, prepares for his morning dip in the kfongl
