The country occupies an archipelago of some 7.100 islands in the western Pacific' Ocean, fezrer than 465 Iggy? an area of one .square mile or more. The largest of the Philippine Islands are louzon in the north and Mindanao in the south. As the islands constitute the higher areas of a partly submerged volcanic mountain belt, they are generally mountainous, with narrow, often embayed coastal strips and densely populated valleys and plains. Although an Asian nation, the Philippines have been strongly influenced by Europeans and Americans. By the SHUI of the 17th century Spain had conquered most of the Archipelago except part of Luzon andthe Moslem south, which was not completely subdued until the mid-19th Century. The new colony was administered from Spanish-rulpd :Wlf'X1'Cf1. which nas a transhipment point for trade between the Orient and Spain. Howezuer, Spanish rule was continually threatened by rival European powers and by the Filipinos, and after the anti-Spanish reiiolts in the Americas, I-'ilipino anti-colonialism intensified. After the U.S. conquest in 1901, Filipino agitation for 1'r1dQ!,0,,df9,,Cp pontinued, and in 1934 the United States agreedto meet this demand in ten years' time, During World War ll the islands were occupied by lflpan. Afler the war, in 1946, llJC' United States Krantedznde- pendence to the Philippines, while maintaining close economic and military relations in the form of mutual tradg preferences, U.S. military bases on the islands, and a mutual defense pact. Until 1955 the Filipino gouprnrnent was actively engaged in the suppression of the Communist-led Hukbalahap lHukst mozfement, which had originated as a guerilla force against the japanese during World War ll. By19651lyQ,Q was mounting sentiment against the close U.S. ties and renewed insurgency broke out in central Luzon. In 1966 the United States agreed to reduce to 25 years the remainder of its lease on bases. , tl 9 -0- ix, 1-I xfQ5i.,,m,, A... Guadalupe sailors on liberty in Manila d ' , . .
