The country occupies an archipelago of some 7.100 islands in the western Pacific' Ocean, fezrer than 465 Iggy? an area of one .square mile or more. The largest of the Philippine Islands are louzon in the north and Mindanao in the south. As the islands constitute the higher areas of a partly submerged volcanic mountain belt, they are generally mountainous, with narrow, often embayed coastal strips and densely populated valleys and plains. Although an Asian nation, the Philippines have been strongly influenced by Europeans and Americans. By the SHUI of the 17th century Spain had conquered most of the Archipelago except part of Luzon andthe Moslem south, which was not completely subdued until the mid-19th Century.
