af ' LIEUTENANT COMMANDER DONALD C. KELLY Lieutenant Commander Donald C. Kelly, a native Californian, first entered the Navy in 1944 as a Seaman Apprentice. In 1955, while serving as Chief Electricians Mate, LCDR Kelly graduated from Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, under the integration program and was commissioned an Ensign. From 1955 to 1957 he served as CIC, Electronics, and Operations Officer aboard USS HOPEWELL IDD-6812 in the Pacific Fleet. In june 1956 he was promoted to Lieutenant ljunior Gradej, and in March 1957 LCDR Kelly was ordered to duty on the staff of Commander Pacific Reserve Fleet as Electronics Officer. LCDR Kelly's next assignment was student at the Nuclear Weapons School, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, Nea Mexico. Upon completion of his training there he served as a Nuclear Weapons Team Officer for the Special Weapons Unit, Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1958 LCDR Kelly reported aboard USS RANDOLPHlCVA-151 for duty as Special Weapons Officer. just prior to his departure from RANDOLPH in 1959 he uras promoted to Lieutenant. From july 1959 to September 1962 he served as Special Weapons 0ffl'Cer at the LCS. Naval Station in Rota, Spain. In October, 1962 LCDR Kelly reported aboard USS BOXER lLPH-41 for duty initially as Fire Control and later Comrntuzications Officer. From May 1964 to August 1965 LCDR Kelly served in Vietnam as a Deputy Senior Advisor to the Viet- namese Navy Coastal Force ljunk Forcej. He not only spent many hours aboard junks, but also frequently rode spotter planes to 10561151 targets for the Vietnamese naval craft. For his work in Vietnam LCDR Kelly received the Medal of Honor, lst Class, from the Vietnamese government, the Air Medal with a gold star, and the Navy C0,,,mer1clat1'0r1 Medal with combat V . Shortly after his arrival in Vietnam he was promoted to the ranle of Lieutenant Commander.
