V FP'-ix, 3. . x W I 4 A at Q. CH. Symbolic as the Statue of Liberty is to all America, so is Grundy High School to Grundy County. This school merits the praise of all who associate with it. Standing as a guardian over the education of all children, it opens its arms to all that will come 'and learn .from what it has to give. It says, nCome, I will help youg I will teach youg and you will learn many things. You will learn about people. You will become more conscious of the fact that there are many people in this world, and that all these are individualistic to a great extent and must be treated as individuals. I will teach you what fair play, sportmanship, and a sense of personal participation mean, for here you come to know all of these more fully. You will learn how to study to show thyself approved. You will discover that it is only throughl diligent work that you will become a true scholar. Your aspirations and ambitions will be increased by the fair competition encouraged here. I offer you this and more. This school is demonstrative of many of the free-H doms for which we now fight. It is in this school that we learn what these freedoms are, to respect them, to help make ,them ever stronger. These and many other things symbolize Grundy High. For these high and lofty ideals that you inspire in us and for all lovely memories and ' cherished friendships, we pay our tribute of love, honor, and respect to you, Grundy County High School. May many more happy years be added to your history and may the school we love so well continue to be a blessing to the boys and girls of Grundy County as it has to the Senior Class of 1945. Instead of the ,usual timid freshmen, the upper classmen had to step aside when me started down the hall. 1The first year at G.C,H S. brought many changes in us. We soon learned that we weren't coming go school for fun but for study. By the end of the first year, several had dropped out for various reasons. As usual several had heard the call of the home or just plain failed and felt they couldn't face it. 4 In 1942 we learned that dseventy-nine of the onef hundred twenty freshmen had survived the first yearq 4. and were spphomores. Before the end of the year we, numbered only sixty-three. This year Miss Hamby was elected s onsor and has been elected each year sincevg ., p .J Lu . . . when we made a step, she stepped right along with us? As sophomores we were very active. We challenged and, won the War Bond, Drive among the classes, sellingz 319,000 worth of bonds and stamps. August, 1945, we enrolled. again, this time as, . 5 5. ,4 juniors. We now had only fifty-three members. lSev7 Sam's call and had? oral cf our number had heard Uncle answered. This year we sponsored the first footballt if queen contest and a junior girl won it. Q is we re istered in 1944 'we were dismayed tog . E 1 learn there were only thirty-eight of our originalg one hundred twenty to be dignified seniors. Well, not? dignified, according to the teachers. We were noisieri and more full of life than the lower classmen. Wes attacked our work with vigor and went on with the Eng- lish, noteboobsfmnn thfueh piven a chance to dischargf them. be realized we had both an annual and a senior f play to produce. The senior play turned out to be at classical play, Little Women. There are only thirty-1 five seniors to graduate now. One of our number was1 called into the Navy before the end of the year, andy probably all other boys will follow in some branch of' the service soon. ' g We, the seniors of Grundy County High, can now look back over the years and smile at our mistakes. and failuresg but as we face the future, we face ity gravely, aware that we will have to fight forg audi S 1 it 'wguw.aa.v:-v-m.,n.m.,,,,.,qagaf.-ww-a,a,.-t.l..,-,,.,. ,..-,.,.i.,,,e,, ..1 A'-un1.swy:1 ,. , Q AM V ,VT I V1 .Q H I V V 'V Mimi . CLASS PRQPHECY It is new in the year of 1955 that I, June Creighton, R.N., in New York City, sit reflecting in the early twilight. As I think of other days my thoughts wander back to 1945--just ten years ago. Why? What happened then? After a few minutes I re- member . That was the year I graduated from Grundy County High School . I think of all the members of my graduating class. How many changes have come to them in this period of ten years! 1 I glance to the book on the table beside me ---- a current best seller entitled, Nine Little Girls and How Thev Grew, by Ernestine Ross. My eyes neit Irest upon a lovely painting that hangs on the wall before me. The artist was Stanley Gene Nunley. In the old days I had never suspected that he had artistic tal- ent. I gaze appreciatively upon the massive fire place in the room built by John V. Tate, now a well known mason. I look over to the window and admire the exquisite draperies designed by Mme. Rollings. I knew her as Jessie dollings. , A.noise on the outside causes me to move to the window. I find that there has been an accident. In one of the cars was Dr. Nathan Barker and Nurse Do- reen Wooten, rushing actress Dorothy Louise Smith to the hospital. The people push frantically to get nearer the sceneg but and able policeman, W. H. Mc- Ginnis, pushes the crowd back and makes way for an ambulance driven by Lloyd Ledbetter. Within the crowd some one is crying out: nDoes anyone wish to hire a lawyer? I saw everything that happenedlu This person was none other than Robert David Martin. As the crowd disperses, I turn from the window and return to my chair before the glowing fire. as I sit watching the dancing flames, I pick up a papen Upon turning to the editorial page, I notice in the corner the name, Burwell Henley, and beside it the word ueditor . Directly under this is Lewis Jacobs, assistant editor. I remember that they were close friends durning high school days. I turn to the fashe ion section and one of the Powers' Models seems fa- 1 Ht ,j,14,w f ' ,Q I . . - I l. ., - . , I., ,.. ll. nilisr. I look closer--yes, it is Yuth Tenn modeling c new creation in evening gowns and besiee her, Jena Brazil, another model, giving us the latest thing in bathing suits. I read the comments under these fash- ions and find them to be written by Geraldine Comp- boll. I look on through the peter, and on one page, find a new model of an airplane. This tyve of olcno had been designed by James Vsrler, and the hilot to try it out was John iohr. Air line hostesmess to make the first flight were isrlaret Rankin and Jenn Jetty. Tien reading more I learned that Eugene Ihil- ipys, e successful bvsincss nan had financed tbe con- strnction of tbe slnne. On the next gale of the paper were advertisments. 'Woo Iete For Leven ster- ring Lury Leo utter, was playing at t?e larsmeunt. Also on this page I sew that lcry 4. Rrsncis, new famed e era star, was scbeuflez to n,peer st tre Lu- micipal Lu6itorium in concert all next week. I mvst remember to go, because I love opera and I know lies qrcncis will be grand in Hdenstu. Wy this announce- ment I sew tbnt the next program to be ct the endi- torium was the World renownee Iovolla iergis and her ballet crorus. In the s ort section there erperned the pictures of two lady wrestlers, beth undefeated, who would defend their titles soon. lhey were :rsnces Ruth Pulte and Ella Rose belts. I wenderee who would win as I remembered that both had been nroficient in eth- loties in high school. Also in the sport'e section I sew en account of wary Ellen roberts' having recent ly wen another victory witb the girls' basketball team that are coached et s hiff school where she was e teacher. In the, peet's corner I found e bit of po- etry composed by Ruth Geary. Did she ever write during high school? upon another page I learned that e new disease fighting chemical NSKVIKYU had been discovered by here lee Roberts and Doris Childers. AB announcement said that Alma Jean Bohr and Luline Campbell, hone doronstration agents, would lecture at nearby schools next week, In the society section there was a lovely picture of Janie Cegle, and the headlines said she was to merry Robert Iergen, Jr. in the early fell. Her matron of honor was hrs, Charles LevsniCath1een Layne! who was new fer along in rear- 4. . . Qfv ' ing a'famiIy. . As I.folded the paper and laid it aside, Iewond- ered what the achool was like now. I was suddenly taken with nostalgia and knew that I must visit my Alma Mater againx and too, look up the other members of my class. I immediately prepared to make a trip to the South. After a plane ride to Nashville I rode on a bus to Monteagle. when I arrived at Monteagle,I hailed a taxig and who should be driving it but Juan- ita Kilby. On the way to Tracy City she told me that Everett Kilgore and Juanita Nunley were now happily married and lived in Tracy City. As we neared the scene of my high school days, I sat on the edge of my seat and strained my eyes for the first view of the campus and building. As it came into sight, my first thought was of a well kept campus. How beautiful the grounds were! A beautiful rock fence enclosed the campus. As we turned into the magnificent driveway leading to the buildings, I centered my attention up- on the buildings. My eyes first fell upon a new gym- nasium. I recalled how badly we had needen one in '45! Upon entering the gymnasium, I found .it to be well equipped with everything the athlete could de- sire. Under the gymnasium, as used to be, was still the cafeteria, but not as I had once eaten in it. This one was a new stream lined place. All the mode ern devices which followed World War II were 'here. Next I went into the main building. How the memories engulfed me as I swung open the familiar end door and walked into the hall! There seemed to be a new shine about everything, yet somehow, all the old things were there too--the things the class of 1945 had made a part of Grundy County High. I strolled down the hall and into the auditorium. I rushed to the stage to see if a long hoped for dream had been realized. I glanced up--yes! The stage had been ceiled, How happy I was for the students who now came here! As I stood in the center of the stage and looked out into the rows of empty seats, I had the feeling of being at home. If only for a day I had truly come home. aw. 1,11- L-1w'3'.,...,-' H .ea- my '14, Q . i55,f,.eg:9sf,3fv?PtfiT11' sawn? I as e 5 5 5 i 3 3 Q 1 r ? One hundred forty green freshmen stepped over the portals of G. C. H. 5. on August '7, 1942. We were from various communities in and around Grundy County, eager to discover what high school life held for us. We were initiated as all freshmen are and took it as good sports. Miss Lacy Yarber was elected sponsor and Doris Anderson as president. In our sophomore year Mrs. Ray was Our sponsor and our other officers were as follows: President, Johnny Heardg Vice President, Bettye Jeanne Kennedyj Secretary, Doris Andersong Treasurer, Ethelynne, Haynes. When Mrs. Ray left, we elected Miss Nina Williamson to take her place. We were then beginning to take our place as a leading class. We sponsored the class basketball tournament and also a stunt program. v ' he entered our junior year with much enthusiasm, even though our class had greatly decreased in number. Buck-Sanders was elected Bresidentg A. J. Layne, Vice President, Bettye Nunley, Secretary, Marguerite Roddy Sreasurerg Christine Ross, Reporter: Mids Yarber, Sponsor. Me started off with a bang and sponsored a football queen contest. The queen, Johnny Heard, and the Maid of Honor, Bettye Jeanne Kennedy, were both from the Junior class. 'We presented a stunt night and at the conclusion the queen was crowned. Entertainment of the seniors came rather early this year because several boys from both classes would be inducted into the service before the end of the year. We gave them a banquet in the library and later took them to the show at Sewannee. During our three years here we have lost the following members of our class to the service of our country: Bobby Gross, William Totherow, Glenn Phipps, ELarry Ross, Carl Crisp, Earl Lusk and Joe Dyer. 3 he close this year with hepes that next year we gwill all return as Seniors. 3 ,, , - Q, r Q an v' i ' I tab A F '-ii, A pl K wifi: 3 V' f ' 4 4 -V ' , '- A 4, iff? 4.54, v'57'?:7fIT' We S ,qt .L V J is fi -1 1 J, V ',.,sf. Q FRESHMAN HISTORY Early in September, 1944, a large group of jolly freshmen arrived on the scene at Grundy County High School. We knew nothing that was in store for us. For the first few days we didn't know our way around. When we should have been in home economies, we were found in civics and just about everywhere we weren't wanted or needed. fhe senior class came to our res- cue. At least they wanted to make sure that our greenness did not go unnoticed. The girls were made wear their dresses backward and wrong side out and were branded with a large F on their fore- heads. Of course the boys were put through the trad- itional belt line. After a few weeks of wandering hopelessly around we settled down and elected the following officersg David Thomas, Presidentg George bmith, Vice Presidentg Virginia Vail, Secretaryg Freeland Phipps, Reporterg and Mr. Schild, Sponsor. By Christmas many members of our class had drop- ped our, until only the ones that were determined to go on at any cost, were left. Several of this group exhibited ability in different activities. The boys have taken quite an interest in both football and basketball. Sone of the girls have played on the basketball team. The freshman class is also proud of its Beta Club members. This class has had many good times at Grundy County High and we look forward to our next three years. with love to Grundy and loyalty to her in our hearts, we complete our first year and feel that we have accomplished one milestone of our life as we look toward a successful future. lb-us'-nr-.mrs 4-nv .-vw - .tl- seff , 'WX .xnwun-n-mum ' mann mural: La ,nf 9. mv? -' 5 , .
