FEXEGDE It is the purpose of the Grundy County seniors of 1944 through this issue of The Mountain Laurel to set forth as clearly as possible an account of the school life at Grundy County High School, so that in the future when the pages are turned, a face or perhaps the recording of an activity, will recall the spirit of these Ugood oldn school days, Perhaps while going through The Mountain Laurel the remem- brance of some mischievous thing will be revived. Our hope is that within these pages there will be little cause of chagrin but much for enjoyment. If this publication of the Mountain Laurel helps to keep alive the spirit of Grundy High our purpose will have been fulfilled, and our task will not have been in vain. UDLEEJHQZAATMCIDN To the boys who would have been members of the Senior class of 1945 and 1944 who have been called into the service of our country, we respectfully and lovingly dedicate this publication of the Moun- tain Laurel. Whether these former classmates of ours chose to be heroes by flying bombers, or gallant marines arriving ahead of the regular army in the islands of the acifio, or sailors helping to keep our ' freedom by sailing the turbulent sub-infested seas, or soldiers defending our flag wherever duty calls, we are proud of them and we therefore wish to ac- knowledge our appreciation for their services by dedicating the Mountain Laurel to the following classmates: , Harold Knight Frank Nunley Robert Van Hoosier Edward Henley George Wright James Totherow Byron Griswold 4 Billy Carden John Kilby I I , s i s 1 M , .fa WJ' wins, ,,, I '- x J, H 4 f ,..f 4 vig f 1 . No, I don't think so, not even to the eo- CLASS I-HSTOISY 'Little grains of grrenness, little grains of sass, little grains of dumbness composed the freshman classn of 1940. Many freshmen found themselves ngaz- ing on the delightful campus of Grundy bounty High School, anxious to feed upon the knowledge of so great an institution and to drink of its resources. Being 'green' Cwith envy of the seniorsl, we pledged oursel- ves to constant study, only to find that football, basketball, volley ball, glee club, and, yes, even romance had to be included in our schedule to make a clear-minded, clrar-thinking group of boys and girls. At the close of the school year we had wanted to say to the new-comers of 1941, as Pearl Hollingsworth had said to the new-comers of 1951, nWhen to this school you come, eighth graders, Try your beet to be first raters. but when you're stuck upon that mound, Remember, freshmen make the world go 'round.n 1941 found us entering Grundy as sophomores with certainly an added bit of confidence, perhaps this confidence helped the sophomores to win the bas- ketball tournament between the classes. By the end of the year the teachers had taken quite a bit of this confidence out of us isometimes we wondered if they didn't take out too much.J After two years, we really began to wonder what it was all about. We were convinced we didn't know anything and also were convinced that we had to know something by the end of the year. With this in mind, we dug deeper and deeper seeking new knowledge. Conway Ross, Harold Knight, Frank Nunley, and Edward Henley entered the armed forces. The class was further reduced by pupils leaving school to work or to keep house, end at the close of the year we numbered only 47. Our plans for a hay-ride to entertain the seniors terminated in a 'coldn picnic at Headen Lake. In the fall of 1943 some 57 seniors registerfd. gree expected. We entered the senior class well avarc of the tasks that lay ahead of us: English note-l'oks, , ,,,,,, V.., W., .. ..,, .M .y .. ,, ..,.,5. After finish- ing, she introduced her guest: the determined Miss Frances Gunn, who, in telling of the deeds of brave- ry performed by nursesg mentionei Miss Dorace Good- man who performed a complicated operation on a wounded persons She told then of the work of Mary Ann Creighton and Jean Ann Smith, head nurses of two outstanding hospitals, After this program, a football game iame over the air. After the game was overs-mcculd believe m ears? Horace Moore was captain of the winning team, n Wondering what had become of the rest of the class of '44, I started on my way to town to mail some letters to Susie Mae Brown and Clementine Gallagher, both secretaries to two large meat-pack- ing plants in Chicagoe ' As I started home, a Dutch Mail Bread truck passed me and who do you think was driving? Chris- tine Abraham of all peopleg at her side sat Marga- ret Summers, her assistant dniver, Making my way through the crowded street? ran into Dorothy Brew- er and her five childrens We stopped on the street to talks She told me of her new neighbor, the newly-weds, the former Josephine Anthony and a miner, She also told me that Irma Pirtle also was a sai1or's wife with two little sailors. The following Monday, while out on a pleasure drive, I heard some rather strong language from the mon working on the road. I turned to see Bennie uMillerH Date get a bawling out from his boss, DmddPmkm 'm 1 U ' ' 1 1 . ' . TWN . . '. ' 1' -1 4 Y 4 1 -4- Bw. , N Returning home, I picked up the newspaper. There in headlines were the names of Bruce Speegle and Pete Gould. They had made a daring rescue of ten people who were in an airplane crash. Among them were Frances Henley and Ella Frances Haynes, hostesses on the plane. A few days later, Tryda Mae Sanders, a school teacher, came to visit me.'She told me that Lillian Sweeton, Willie Mae Nunley, and Gladys Fults were ballet dancers, She said she went to church Sun- day and heard the Reverend Doyle Moneyheffer preach an inspiring sermon, A missionary, Mary Sue Thorpe, just recently back from Africa, made a short talk. The next day I was reading the sport's page, There in black and white it told of the champion lady wrestler, Becky Hampton, and Edith Gossett, the champion lady diver and swimmer. Realizing that within the last few days I had heard from almost all of the seniors of 1944, I began diligently to inquire concerning the where- abouts of the remainder of the class. I learned that Joyce Conry, Billie lean Thom- as, Sallye Hall, and Clata Hampton were joint part- ners in poultry and cattle raising on a large west- ern ranch in Wyoming. On an adjoining ranch Vera White and Katherine Childers were trying to give the'NBig Fouru some competition, Of course, there was no surprise when I learned Bettye Lynn Jones was married and now had twin tow- headed HPee-Wee'sn. I had heard from a reliable source that Mary Sue Charles was in charge of a cat hospital and Willodean Hamby and Frances Wooten were in the business of fortune telling. Having collected this last bit of information, my account of the seniors of '44 was completed. I relaxed, closed my eyes, and leaned back in my easy chair to think over the accomplishments of my class during the ten years that we had been separated. ,QL . - fr G ' v s I E.l fgxw Q, . an ' ' ...V Q, 'z .'s 5 ,, ,I was wi,,.,. , . f-1 fxcc Wg gg We, the senior class of 1944 of Grundy County High, do this 5th day of May in the year 1944, declare this writing to be our last will and testament, We do hereby will all property, real and personal, that we have possessed for the last four or five years. X On August 20, 1943, about one hundred twenty green pupils signed up as freshmen in Grundy County High School. For the first few days we were all over the building, even in the senior English class. Pupils started dropping out one by one, and now there are only about ninety freshmen. We met one day to elect our class officers. Carl Lappin was elected presidentg Jimmy Stinnet, Vice- Presidentg John Carrol Ross, Secretary, Mary Jo Fults Treasurer, Janis Roberts, Reporter, Willene Tucker, Phalda Thorneberry, and John Francis, Cheerleaders. Mr. Schild was chosen spdnsor. As usual we were initiated. The boys went through the traditional belt line, and the girls were marked with an 'F' on their foreheads and were compelled to go barefoot part of the day. Nearly all of the Freshmen went out for some Kind of activity this year. Quite a few freshmen ouys were prominent on the basketball and football teams. The girls went out for basketball too, and we had some very good players. The freshmen have also given the clubs a lot of support. Both the Glee Club and Dramatios Club had freshmen members, and several have already joined the ranks of the Beta Club. The sophomores won the war bond contest, but the freshmen came in second. It was a hard battle and we really worked hard. It didnft matter so hush who won, just so the school schd u'lht uf Denise we can only hope that those who succeed us as freshmen enjoy their first year in high school as much as we have. 4,1 . .- .
