SOP!-IGM GRE C LA SS It was in the Fall of 1941 that we, the present day Sophomore Class, first became acquainted with Grundy County High. It did not take us very long to learn that much was expected of us even we were only freshmen. The upper elassmen though did their bit to toughen us up and prepare us for the hard times to follow. The officers of the 1941 Freshman Class wore! President, Gene Nunleyg Vice President, Mary Kathleen Layneg Secretary and Treasurer, Maxine Charles, Class Sponsor, Miss Lacy Yarber. On August 7, 1942, we learned that only 120 freshmen of 1941 had become sophomores had failed, others had dropped out. After weeks as sophomores the class number again dwindle. Some found the mental stress and 79 of the Some a few began to strain too great. Others were allurod to seemingly more attractive realms of human endeavor. At length we were only aixtyethree. At the first class me ting Miss Jewell Hamby was eheson sponsor and the following officers were elected: President, Ernistine Ross, Vice President, Ruth Gearyg Secretary, Novella Hargis. In October the Sophomore Class challenged the other three classes in a drive to sell War Bonds and Stamps. The Sophomore Class won, selling 319,000 worth. Mary Elizabeth Francis led in the sale. The Sophomore Class has active members in the Dran tics Club, Glee Club, and Speech Class. Three sophomores are members of the Beta Club. Juno Creighton is the class vocalist and William Turner finds much pleasure in sketching caricatures. Mary Ellen Roberts, Juanita Kilby, Mary Layne, Edna He ks, Gene Nunley, and Nathan Kathleen Barker made satisfactory and commendable records for them- selves and the teams during the basketball SCHSOHO Lewis Jacobs, Burwoll Henley, Gene Nunley, Nathan Barker, Thomas Brewer and Bradford Layne represented the Sophomore Class on the football team. We, of the Sophomore Class of 1945, stand facing the next two years with grim determination informed and capable Senior Class in 1945. to be well
