Grundy County High. Realizing this, we, the senior class of l945, humbly submit this book of remini- scenes. If this annual shoulghat any time in years to come cause one's face to'QhyQghten as he fondly re- members a friend, or should it cause one to be amused as he recalls a happening herein written, this annual will have served faithfully the purpose of its existence---a recording of pleasant exper- iences at Grundy High. May the publication of this annual, UThe Golden Memoriesu, intensify our love for Grundy High and our respect for her ideals. May the classes which follow be inspired to nobler heights. Ne truthfully carried out the tradition of being ngreonu. How new and different were our first ex- periences at Grundy High! It took us almost a year to get accustomed to the change. There were a few failures in the Freshman Class and a considerable number quit. When school opened in 1940 we stepped forward as Sophomoros. Our attitude toward school had changed somewhat. To had really become dignified- almost as dignified as the Seniors. During this year not so many failed, a few joined us from upper classes, xnd some were transfered from other schools. However, our number did not remain the same throughout the year, some married and a few others just stopped for various reasons. After two years in high school, many who had been Freshmen in 1959 stepped to the third rung of the educational ladder. Yes, in 1941 we were . Juniors. During this year we learned that we still had a lot to learn. Bookkeeping, English literature, home economics, and geometry kept many Juniors burning mid-night oil. One of the high lights of this year was entertaining the Seniors. We started rather early in the year giving programs sponsor- ing pictures etc. to raise funds. Just before school closed we took the Seniors to Nashville. We visited several of the places of interest---The Tar Memorial Building, The Hermitage, and The Parthenon. We left Nashville at 5:00 0'elock with sleepy eyes and tired feet. - On August 7, 1942 thirty-five registered as H HQ 7. This number either represented the sur- , e c vival of the fittest or an unusual degre. of per- severance. As Seniors, we realized that there would be much to do, but we never dr-amid just how y X much. The Seniors have come near losing their dignity because of the strenous work placed on them by the teachers. As several students can tell you, they have suffered nervous breakdowns work- ing on English notebooks. I wonder why one of our history classmates hurried home from church so early the other night. Could it have been because she had a chapter of history to read and fifteen questions to get? Yes, her hair turned gray over night. In early mornings we noticed lights still burning in many shorthand students' rooms as they manfully labored over their work. Kiss Yarber, history teacherg Mrs. Colston, English teaeherg and Miss McConnell, shorthand teacherg fing it hard to realize that we are still high school students and are not yet in college. ' We have played our part in the drama of Grundy High which will end April 25, 1943. Just how well we have acted our roles, we will leave for the faculty to judge. As time goes by we will never forget the years of joy and sorrow that we have shared together, and we will hold their memories close to our hearts forever. if , '91-fztsfliififrff ' f f' ' , if li? f I f ' ' Es.-Z ' If ' hfvsb ':'f1'3F2 EZ'-ik - ' -b I UK IF? sn 1 ., tv , 'I' ,QL If I HH Pr-fxpl V' xlnfxbb flixjffjicxf + It Ihxlnb teen ashes to 7T1tO the cles pronnecy f' fx I pondered over the matter Tow coulo I, with no the future of 1' cl ss ,,lf I ndstic powers, foreses ' ft fr matess Then I thou nt of ny frlend Merlin, the It - Lalician I woula ,et pls crystal -ll uno fole see the future I fgrzec lnto the bull Mt first y 'sW HIHQL' t was nistJ, than as qlzeu deeper I saw some Q 1 tains Fas lt Vos 15 wus a lsrgs HIPILDCP wlngi11 it's way vlth s loud of passong rs, ann I uoon gluing closcr, I :ww tilt the pilot of t e fs I, tv H' 3 cl ne wts none other th.n Cnestsr O'ncsl and the as s UITTQGQQ, Juun +, pours. f'nj nov vell af lormer class Q I 1 H fs I wus tn' 2' 'L I mates looted trls picture f.gsd rnd I sehclc In tblt womsn W?lVlHf down af Q ' v I crowucd, susf strc t :Qs Sarf Lama Tuintrs 1 un V 'ft tnc two chlldren -china hcr must bc ncr own. lLQtbD6d wnllc I Qetrl hor cull tumlf nsmes. William Gunn, known to us as Bill, delivered the sermon of the morn- ing. Ah---how deep is the mystery of life, for, as I remembered, Bill Gunn wasn't the sort to become a preacher. This peaceful scene faded from my eyes and I beheld a vaguely familiar figure dabbing away at a canvas with brushes and colors. It was Clarine Payne, new famous painter of nature sc- ones. My eyes now rested upon a sign saying nGea- ry's Garageu---Max Geary-Proprietor. This was not an altogether unfamiliar sight to my eyes as I vaguely remember another Gearys Garage when I went to Grundy Hi. The crystal ball cleared 'nd I beheld the smiling face of John Kenneth Myers o , I asked myself,Uis this a classmate of mine?W My question was not long unanswered, for I beheld the sign which read, Myers' Duck Farm This scene disappeared and I was looking at a busy city street The ball centered upon a theater nd I saw the sign advertising nRomeo and Julietn Imagine my surprise when I saw that two main players were James Ledbetter and Sarah Ellen Fults ' Nhat w-s this sight which next reached my eyes? Vhy, it was three girls gracefully doing ballet steps I immediately recognized them as being Martha Ann Arnold, Peggy Langley, and Mar gie Sue Nunley They were now famous ballet dan cers My next scene was that of a small corner drug store, whom should I see there? A af Rust was filling a very complicated prescripton for a customer The next scene which unfolded bef ore my eyes was very peculiar In fact, it was quite startling for I saw a newspaper headline which read, nMary Helen McFarland Sensational Lady wrestler to Meet Purple Horror tonightn It was quite astounding, thought I, remembering frail little Mary Helen but I thought of the old saying Utruth is stranger than fictionn and wait 2 .n a 15 a ' , R . One proved to be the interior of a coal mine. Inside, I saw Fairley Frederick busily digging coal. The character in the other scene proved to be Robert Harris--the Proprietor of a moving picture theater. Next my eye beheld Estell Garner and Mildred Killian, the inseparable duet as secretaries to two successful business men. who were these three attractive girls in uni- form? Why, they were Marie Barnes, Juanita Money- heffer, and Laura Ann White, members of the W A- A Cfs. The scene changed and I new saw Juanita Pat- rick and Carolyn Owen as female newspaper report- ers getting a scoop story for the morning news. I gazed deeper and saw Faye Moore as a beauty operator in a neat well equipped little shop. Just then a taxi cab stopped in front of Faye's door-and lol the taxi driver was none other than Sarah Ann Hobbs. Ah, what did I see next? Why it was Orin Crouch, familarly known as Pee-Wee, and what should he be but a graveyard Night-Watchman? I , saw the ball grow very misty and I knew my intern. view was over but I sat there for a long time ' thinking of my classmates and the days we spent in Grundy High. Y' . I if ,.. , I Q 4 . i . x . We realized then that we had come a long way and many important things had happened since that memorable day in 1959, when We had entc ed aslfrcshmcn. Since August, 1942, the Junior class has been reduced to 47. Har- old Knight, Conway Ross, Frank Nunley and Edward Henley have joined the fighting ranks of our coun- try. Several of our students have decided that entering into Holy Matrimony is more important than a high school education. Here's hoping that our num- ber will not be further reduced before graduation. Juniors were offered the following courses: English, Spanish, history, economics, home econ- omies,5a5ricultur6,ebeokkeeping, typing, speech, shorthand, plane geometry, and chemistry. Harold Knight, Horace Moore, Bruce Speegle, Robert Vann Hoosier, Billy Carden, and James Tothe- row showed great possibil ties in foot-ball during the past season. Many of the same boys showed great interest in basketball also. Betty Lynn Jones, Ella Frances Haynes, Yvonne Pocus, and Frances Henley helped win many victories for the Grundy basketball girls, while Christine Abraham cheer leader, cheered them on to victory. The efficiency of the Junior boys and girls helped Grundy win many victories. One of the most weighty matters confronting the Junior class has been the problem of entertaining the Seniors. Suggestions were made but always there appeared the difficulty of getting tires and gas. Since this is one of the crucial moments in the life of our country and since everyone is doing his bit, we decided to be patriotic too, so we planned a hay ride--a real hay ride with horses and hay. We come to the close of this year with high expectations of being Grundy's best graduating class next year. fy ,L ig I N. ,us N ff' 9 3 xg V 'M sa x V' 1 'I L VE 1 F l 1 sv As.,..,1 1 1' J. f M 3 V , V,- Y!! ,!, wa .,,. ,,,- Lk'-2 w' X' .4 W 1 1 'v- 'ff Ui 17521, 1 . vi., , . -uf A I .I 5 --.5 ,fgfmkh M F .6 44 1. 5-fa r -1, ,F X k f Nw gf V- Y, ' V, . It did not take us very long to learn that much was expected of us even we were only freshmen. The upper elassmen though did their bit to toughen us up and prepare us for the hard times to follow. The officers of the 1941 Freshman Class wore! President, Gene Nunleyg Vice President, Mary Kathleen Layneg Secretary and Treasurer, Maxine Charles, Class Sponsor, Miss Lacy Yarber. On August 7, 1942, we learned that only 120 freshmen of 1941 had become sophomores had failed, others had dropped out. After weeks as sophomores the class number again dwindle. Some found the mental stress and 79 of the Some a few began to strain too great. Others were allurod to seemingly more attractive realms of human endeavor. At length we were only aixtyethree. At the first class me ting Miss Jewell Hamby was eheson sponsor and the following officers were elected: President, Ernistine Ross, Vice President, Ruth Gearyg Secretary, Novella Hargis. In October the Sophomore Class challenged the other three classes in a drive to sell War Bonds and Stamps. The Sophomore Class won, selling 319,000 worth. Mary Elizabeth Francis led in the sale. The Sophomore Class has active members in the Dran tics Club, Glee Club, and Speech Class. Three sophomores are members of the Beta Club. Juno Creighton is the class vocalist and William Turner finds much pleasure in sketching caricatures. Mary Ellen Roberts, Juanita Kilby, Mary Layne, Edna He ks, Gene Nunley, and Nathan Kathleen Barker made satisfactory and commendable records for them- selves and the teams during the basketball SCHSOHO Lewis Jacobs, Burwoll Henley, Gene Nunley, Nathan Barker, Thomas Brewer and Bradford Layne represented the Sophomore Class on the football team. It also represented a variety of opinions concerning high school. Some came fearfully and reluctantly: some entered think- ing high school would be all play and no work: all wondered what it would be like to take only four subjects and spend an hour for each class recitation. The Freshman Class initiation created a let of fun an excitement. The boys were sent through the belt line and the girls were their dresses wrong- side-out and went barefoot for a day. At,a meeting of the Freshmen Class, Miss Lacy Yarber was chosen class sponsor and the following officers were elected: Doris Andersen, Presldentg James Golston, Vice-President: Dixie Wiggins, Sec- retary and Treasurer. The Freshman Class proved to be very active in the various school activities. It is well represented in the Dramatics Club, Glee Club, and Future Farmers Club. During their initiation into the Dramaties Club freshmen often entertained their teachers. With their hair piled high upon their head and bowing low, they appeared before the teachers and recited nursery rhyme s . Some of the Freshmen proved to be very studious. The following became members of the Beta Club: Willene Knight, Eugene Uselten, Harold Jones, and A.J. Layne. In October the Sophomore Class challenged the other classes in school in a War Bond and Stamp drive. The Freshman Class accepted the challenge. Jean Parsons, Sue Halloway, Don Roberts, Betty Nunley, Dimple Brown and Ruth Myers led the Freshmen in the sales. The Freshmen sale totaled 3l7,000, but we lost the contest. Judged by the progress that the class has made this year, there is a good reason to believe that the Senior Class, three years hence, will belbne of the most versatile that has ever gone out from Grundy High 5, mf, ,ag ,Q H Buzz 5 1. f .FSA Xa .
