CLASS His TCJRY: - is . , It's September, 1938, and a group of cleanly washed, freshly starched little beings begin their school days. Under the supervision of Mrs. Om er Robinson, the youngsters built a play house. It certainly doesn't seem as though it was thirteen years ago that we played in the sandpile, and took afternoon naps. The next year, Miss Ruth Davis guided us through our work and play., Can we ever forget that grown-up feeling that swelled within us as we left the kindergarteners below and proudly marched upstairs to resume our work with the other grade schoolers. As second to sixth grade flew past, we were instructed by Miss Williams, Miss Mc- Broom, Miss Almeda Davis, Miss Eickleberg, and Miss Meyer, all of whom helped us climb the educational ladder and attain our goals of graduation. Many memories of this period come floating back at the mention of words like May baskets, valentines, hand prints in plaster of Paris, American Legion poster contests, and parties. In grade school not a holiday was passed without a party, complete with an apple, cookies, or cake. How we looked forward to Halloween with our masquerade party just before dismissal! Now in reminiscence we are brought up to 1945. We had moved up to the top floor of the building. Each of us had a desk in the Junior High assembly hall and went to a different room and a different teacher for each of our classes. That in itself was the major event of the year. The class participated in the Bandanna Minstrel Show, the boys tried to make the Jr. High athletic squads, who had Deke Behrens as coach, and others joined the Jun- ior Safety Patrol. As ninth graders, our class was greatly increased by the enrollment of rural students in Grundy High. We felt quite important, for we were divided into two divisions, 9A and 9B, and homemaking and manual training had a place among the four subjects we were re- quired to carry. One of our class members, Betty Graham, acted as head librarian during this last year ln the grade school building. As the year closed we were positive that we wouldn't have nearly as much fun in Senior High when we resumed our school work as sophomores. Then came the big day! At last we were grown-up--but every knee shook as we enter- ed the door for the first time. Without the guidance of our homeroom teachers, Miss Thellen and Mr. Habenlcht, and the welcome help from the upperclassmen, we might have given up in our eternal search for the right door at the right time. There were so many different things to remember, too. Everyone went upstairs on the east stairs and down on the west stairs. Then, with only two minutes between classes, a virtual mountain of books had to be carried from class to class each day. Also our study halls were spent in the library where we had access to an endless supply of reference material. Joyce Meyers was elected to be a member of the cheerleading squad, to be joined by Betty Graham the following year. Various members of our class were chosen to participate in the chorus and glee club and a few more members joined the ranks of the band. The boys pitched in with the athletic department and helped to bring home our share of victories in basketball, football, and track. Several events highlighted our junior year. Early in the year, the class presented the class play, We Shook the Family Tree. All through the year, the big project was selling pop, candy bars, and gum, to raise money for the Prom. As May rolled around, the gym became a southern plantation and before we knew it, Del Taylor and his orchestra were playing soft melodies for the formal affair. As September 4, 1950, approached, various sentiments were expressed. There was only one way to look at it. This was our last year! At the end of the first six weeks Mr. Habenicht's homeroom was the proud co-winner of the School Spirit Trophy. Homecoming was a big event with Joyce Meyers, crowned queen and Joyce Schoon, Betty Graham, Neoma Horbach and Clarice Niehaus acting as her attendants. The football team out did themselves as they completed an undefeated, untied season. The class is also justly proud of Bill Mahan, who has acted as student chairman during our senior year. The class as a whole wants to express our thanks to all of the teachers who have help- ed us gain our education. Especial thanks go to Miss Theilen, Mr. Habenicht, and Mr. Page who have acted as our sponsors. ,f 'lfff 4QfQ fln' ff 1 fff ff s lllllllillllllllllllllll smmmmmmmmmmmm IUNIDRS xl ,. ,A f X xf2'4':!'3:, fiQAy'55x .X I, NX N1 Allen Anderson Ash Bakker Bergman, Cannegieter De Neui Draper Finke Flater Hawley Hempon Henzc Horbach Huisman 'K' ft lei: N E:- 547 af- ...,. Third-Tannatt, Wells, Sonnenberg, Van Tiger, Anderson, Bergman, Boren, Kruger, Lynch, Clark, Morrison, Niehaus, Page. The 1950 football season will long be remembered, as Coach Earl Page and his in- vincible Spartans brought home the North Iowa Cedar Conference championship for the first time since 1944. The Grundy team romped over five conference opponents and three non-conference teams for an undefeated season. This year's Grundy Center team was very well balanced, but there were several players with outstanding performances. Keith l-loleman won a berth on the all-conference team for his fine work at spin-back. Besides calling the plays, Keith lugged the pigskin and directed the Spartan aerial attack. Also in the offensive backfield were two fine run- ning backs, Delbert Kell and Bud Henze. The forward wall, led by Don Dittmer, Marion Ruebel, Irvin Stumberg, and Wayne Cogswell, was alert and hard charging. The big 220-pound Dittmer was placed on the Iowa Daily Press Association's third all-state team. Jim Miller and Orville Allen, the two sticky-fingered ends, pulled many games out of the fire with their spectacular catches. The Spartans started the season rolling with a 21-7 triumph over a highly touted Belle Plaine team. Belle Plaine scored first, but with Bud Henze doing the running, Grundy was unstoppable. After a scoreless tie with Traer in the conference jamboree, the Spartans traveled to Toledo and eked out a 7-6 win with the powerful Grundy ground attack. The next two opponents were the toughest on the Spartan schedule. Grundy managed to down the Red Hawks of Traer 13-6 with the ground and aerial attacks working together. Holernan sewed the game up with his sensational 60-yard run. Holeman, again, led Grundy to victory over Teachers High by scoring two touch- downs in the 14-7 win. After trouncing Ackley 19-0 in the Grundy homecoming, the Spartans journeyed to Eldora and with some wonderful passing by Holeman and receiving by Miller, Grundy stopped the Tigers 14-7. The Spartans gained momentum as the season progressed. The next victim was Vinton, a powerhouse in the Wamac Conference. But the high flying Spartans unleashed an almost flawless aerial attack and defeated the Bluejays 21-0. The finale of the season turned out to be a 54-6 rout of Reinbeck. The powerful Spartan ground attack was just too much for the hapless Rams. Grundy held a 29-0 half- time lead and went on to score four more touchdowns during the final two periods. The Spartans outgained the Rams 347 yards to 163 for Reinbeck. Never in the long history of Grundy Center football has a season given the team, the school, and the community a greater thrill. Rated number 14 in the whole state, the 1950 team will go down in Spartan lore. HOlCV'har1,F-1.,UBae,K if r, I1vCLJcn , ycrlluv' Diffwnev-.Ta.cKle STumber'9. Smith, Page, Tannatt, Schoon, Petersen, N. Bergman, J. Smith, Meester. The sharpshooting Grundy Center basketball team finished the 1950-1951 season with 14 victories and 7 defeats. Coach Tannatt's Spartan five tied for second place in the North Iowa- Cedar Conference with a 6-4 record. Although Grundy was beaten by Dike in the Grundy County Tournament, the Spartans went as far as the District at Iowa Falls in other tournament play. Hampton tipped the Spartans 35-29 in the finals. The Grundy team had plenty of height in six-foot four-inch Jake Bergman and six-foot two-inch Orville Allen. Bergman did a fine job at center and excelled both in scoring and in pulling down rebounds. Allen played at either forward or center and scored heavily at both positions. Jim Miller also played forward and was most deadly with his two-handed push shot. Three other fine forwards were Dennis Kiewiet, Delbert Finke, and Merle Smith. Marion Ruebel and Irvin Stumberg held down the guard spots. Ruebel flipped in most of his two-pointers with his two-handed set shots. At every game fans stared in astonishment as Rube fired in his spectacular long shots. Porky Stumberg, best known for his terrific dribbling, was also a fine shot and a good rehounder. Delbert Kell and Keith Holeman, who helped out at the guard positions, gave excellent accounts of themselves. After nipping Reinbeck 14-13 in the Conference jamboree, the Spartans swarmed over Gladbrook and Aekley, the next two opponents. Reinbeck's Larry Trepp sank a basket in the final few seconds to trip Grundy 50-48 in the second conference game of the season. Teachers High of Cedar Falls beat the Spartans 45-42 in the following game. A last quarter Grundy rally fell just shy of catching the red hot Little Panthers. After smothering Greene 60-30, the Spartans traveled to Independence and beat the fast- moving independence team 33-31. The Spartans got by Wellsburg 48-28, but Traer, on a hot night, managed to squeak by Grundy 41-40. Grundy won the next four consecutive games, easily rolling past Conrad, Eldora, and Ackleyg but Reinbeck provided more competition. Grundy finally beat the Rains 37-34. After losing to Dike in the finals of the Grundy County Tournament, Grundy revenged an early loss to Teachers High. Grundy played an alinosi flawless game in order to whip the Little Panthers 49-40. The Spartans lost the next two games. Traer dipped the Spartans again 57-56, and Dike also turned the trick twice in defeating Grundy 4S-46. Grundy finished the regular season fsqitli a 50-32 victory over Eldora. In tournament play, the Spartans downed Reinheck in the seetionals at Grundy Center. The red-hot Grundy tive held an eight-point load at half time and mrmaged to stay ahead of the Rams for the rest of the game. An overtime needed to tip loxaa Falls in the first round at the District tournament at Iowa Falls. The Spartans hit only eight field goals in losing to Hampton 35-29 in the finals of the District. Grundy led by one point .it the emi of the thiro pvrio-ri, hut eouldn'i keep up the pace and lost to the sharpshooting Bulldogs. The 1951 basketball team will go tion-.n in Spllrtnn sport history as a colorful one which gave the school its nest to achieve a successful faeqlson.
