When we drew the name of green freshmen our class was uncreased by twenty sux rural students Now we carrued only four subjects and many members entered hugh shool band and vocal groups The class was duvuded unto two duvusuons 9 l and 9 ll Thus year we helped present the Bandanna Muns trel Show Bull K Max Ruchard and erry were the darky endmen and Kathryn accom panued the show Many other class members composed the chorus and band A Junuor hugh paper unuor Hugh Lughts was publushed thus year by several of our class members The gurls took homemakung and the boys manual arts the subjects they had looked forward to for many years Mr Behrens who took puc tures of our smulung faces all through Junuor hugh took hus last ones thus year Many of the boys served theur last year on the unuor Safe ty Patrol Now everyone was ready to shed som of our youthful habuts such as havung annual class pucnucs and move up to hugher learnung However when the tlme to move came manv a backward glance was guven the grade buuld ung whuch held so many memones for us On arruval un the senuor hugh buuldung un the thurd act we sophomores the underclassmen watched wuth awe and respect the superuoruty of our older fruends The new buuldung greatly umpressed us but gradually we futted unto the pattern of hugh school lufe Our class was duvud ed unto two homerooms wuth Muss Sue Dodd and Mrs Lous Bokholt as sponsors We kept thus arrangement for the remaunder of our school days We were now ready to cover the last lap of our journey to the top of the tradu tuonal educatuonal ladder Now we passed up and dow'u staurs to classes studued un the well equupped lubrary and began to be more on our own Although we had more work to do our socual program was greatly uncreased Our long cherushed dream funally came truel We were allowed to attend the Homecomung Dance followung the game the clumax of the football season Our class decorated the goal posts as uts share un the bug event How the gurls dud plan beforehand what they would wear for the umportant occasuon ln addutuon to thus party we were uncluded un all the hugh school partues sponsored by the dufferent class es We enthusuastucally made our debut wuth a dress up party Also thus year some of our members were pemuutted to work at the junuor senuor prom Two from our class Manlyn F and Rose Marue B of the saxophone quartet traveled to St oseph Mussouru for the Natuonal Musuc Contest The marchung band went to Des Mounes to march un the bug Hawkeye Holu day parade and many of our class members were able to enyoy thus trup Dunng thus year the students chose be tween a commercual or college entrance course Some of the classes were new and dufferent Remember how shaky each of us was when we got up to guve our furst speech before the class? New actuvutues such as News Staff Scuence Club and GAA were entered by many students One day was spent un havung X ray puc tures of our lungs taken by the lowa Tubercul losus Assocuatuon One of our members Rose Mane B was a cheerleader and some of the boys made varuous senuor hugh athletuc teams ln the second scene the class has gradu ated unto junuor class Thus proved to be one of our busuest years On November I8 we pre sented our class play Playboy of the West tern World One of our largest projects was to earn money through our bug sellung cam paugn at athletuc events Teresa was the able head of the funance commuttee All the stu dents putched un to do theur part un sellung candy pop apples etc Thus year Muss Sue Dodds homeroom was the proud wunner of the School Spurut trophy for four sux weeks peruods The bug socual event of the year was the prom whuch many of the students on the execu tuve commuttee zealously planned Many a mornung these twelve students and the class sponsors could be seen huddled around a lu brary table arguung about the theme and plan nung the decoratuons refreshments and the untermussuon programs The bug nught funally camel The gym was beautufully decorated carryung out the Maytume Souree theme gurls swept about un gorgeous formals and soft musuc dreamuly drufted up from the gym where Earl Dunns Orchestra was playmg lt was a tremendous success wuth Phyllus crowned queen of the evenung Bull K Roger and Ruchard were the representatuves from our class at Hawkeye Boys State On class day Teresa Manlyn F and Kathryn were unducted unto the Natuonal Honor Socuety Many of our members took advantage ot the druvers course offered for the furst tume thus year The one act plays had several Jun uors un theur casts and the membershup un the Thespuan Socuety also uncluded some junuor students Durung the last semester of the year Rose Mane H Ann Rae and Leon were elected cheerleaders to funush thus year and next Now that we have funally attauned the rank of senuors un the thurd scene the auduence relaxes as these famuluar actuvututes are present The furst mayor event of the year WH9 Homecomung wuth Ann Rae the crowned .1 1- . . u , 1 , - - ' ' , 1. . . CLASS HISTORY Members ofthe graduatrng class you are about to see a revlew of your school days ulet pleasel The play Class of 49 rs ready to begrn The curtarn nses on the frrst act whrch shows thrrty three bewrldered students durrng therr frrst day at school rn the fall of I936 Some of the faces are famrlrar to the audrence ln sprte of chrldrsh harr dos Shrrley Temple dresses and jackre umper corduroys the be grnners who are strll rn the class Marrllyn A Dorothy A Charles Kathryn Rose Mane B Richard Bernrce C Delmar Dorothy K erry Roger Marran S Stanley and Marlrn are recognizable Mrs Omer Robrnson the teacher rs krnd ly tryrng to rnterest the youngsters rn the attrac trve play house sandprle or burldrng blocks Many remrnrscent looks occupy the onlookers faces The class was drvrded wrth half the ehrl dren comrng rn the mornrng and the rest rn the afternoon The audrence rs rememberrnb the mrd sessron naps they took on Irttle mats to the soft dreamy musrc of the phonograph Scene two shows Mrss Ruth Davrs rn structrng the brrght eyed frrst graders rn therr reading lesson Many rn the audrence are re memberrng how grown up they felt when they could move to the second floor of the grade burldrng One of the busrest trmes of that year was at Chrrstmas when srlhouettes of each stu dent were made for hrs par nts grft Other scenes of the frrst act show small fry rn the other lower grades The class wrll always be obligated to Miss Darly Mrs O Connor, Mrss McBroom Mrss Almeda Davrs Miss Bekemerer and Mrss rngsbury rts sec ond to srxth grade teachers respectrvely It was through therr gurdance that the class got rts sure footmg for rts clrmb rn education These scenes brrng bark many memorres Never wrII the artrstrc par rt clesrgns sprayed wrth a brush or swrrled wrth our frngers be for gotten Then remember tho soap statues we carefully carved the plaque cf lay we made rn the shapes of our I-ant hc- many posters we entered rn Amerrcan l ron contests and that beautrful medreval astle we burlt rn sixth grade How old eve ne felt when he moved rnto those brg hrr topped desks rn fourth grade Our href punrshment for drs obedrence was havrrr to srt rn the hall outside the door However the dread of berng sent to the superintendent s offrcr- d vague rum ors of a paddle made rr I I rgcls most of the trme Recesses treats for classmates when brrth days were celebrated and the annual exhrbrts we proudly brought our parents to were all left behrnd us when we entered Junror hrgh In the second act the assembly on the thrrd floor of the grade burldrng provrdes the settrng Mr Behrens the prmcrpal rs making the darly announcements before the group of puprls School starts when the hand of the clock rn the northeast corner jumps to 8 50 My what a change rt was to start school ten mrnutes earlrer to pass from one room to an other for classes and to have rndrvrdual lock ers rn the hall for our wraps Oh how grown up we thought we werel In seventh grade we vrewed the freshmen wrth awe and admrratron Immedrately all the grrls began cuttmg off therr prgtarls the boys donned tres occasronally and the srgns of at tempted sophrstrcatron became notrceable These changes brrng looks of amusement to the onlookers faces because the short skrrts gangly legs and arms and awkwardness cer tarnly dont grve an appearance of sophrstrca tron Many more actrvrtres were entered rn here ln seventh and erghth grades our class competed rn the annual spellrng contest l I945 Kathryn represented the Junror hrgh rrr the county spellrng contest The rousrng pep meetrngs were led by Rose Marre H and Rose Marne B cheerleaders durrng the drfferent awards were won by Roger and Stanley began their athletrc careers durrng the yunror hrgh days Some par trcrpated rn basketball football and track all coached by Deke Behrens Crames were held wrth other schools and between the fresh men and the seventh and erghth graders f course the boys were enthusrastrcally backed by the cheerleaders and students War played a brg part rn the Irves of the members of our class partrcularly durrng Jun ror hrgh Everyone remembers the large ther mometer scale on the bulletrn board showrng rn brrght colors the records of stamps and bonds regularly bought rn the different grades Who wrll ever forget the brg day when school closed to permrt every student to do hrs brt for Uncle Sam ln the brg scrap dl'lVC? queen and Rose Mane H Barbara Phyllis and Teresa her attendants The dance was a bug success wlth an exceptionally nlce unter mlsslon program featurxng the graduxtes of the class of l898 fxfty years ago and gradu ates of other classes up to the present year Many of the boys have been partlcxpatmf ln sports the last four years Don Galen Charles Rlchard B1llD Delmar Max Cllf ford Bob Leon Merle B1llK Alfred erry Bennle Roger Stanley and Paul have been a credit to their class whlle partlcnpatmg xn such sports as basketball football track base ball and wrestling ln the I948 football sea Conference first team Charles was selected for the All Conference second team and Stanley received honorable mentlon That sea son Delmar also recelved honorable mentxon ln the All State football team Thls year the music department has pre sented lts concerts as before and many of the semors took part The great music carnlval was also a popular event Nlany semor glrls have become active mem bers m F H A the last two years ln thus group they learn how to become successful house keepers of tomorrow The Spartan Cherrloteers a newly or ganlzed pep club this year has enlisted many members from the semor ranks Wearlng thelr whlte sweatshxrts and pennants and enthuslxs tncally yelllng through thenr megaphones thel add pep and splrrt to pep meetlngs and games We mustnt forget to glVC leon our stu dent chalrman a lot of credit for has excellent worl-. ln condurtmg our numerous assemblles md pep meetmgs Three more students Barbar oyce and Roger were inducted into the Natlonal Honor bocxety at a special assembly after the close ol the fxrst semester This year the class took umversxty tests for the last tlme These have been so much a part of our schoohng that college tests of thnx We mustnt forget to mention Supt 0 land our prmclpal Mr Thompson and other patient faculty members who have helped us through our climb up the educatnonal ladder As the last act comes to the climax the curtaln falls on an audlence of varled reactlons Tears 'xre seen nn many eyes as the semors real lze their school days are over Other faces are eager as they anticipate the full college day ahead And now the lights dlm and soon the auditorium xs empty and silent After com mencement mght the famxllar school surround mg wxll probably never see agam the complete circle of the class of 49 But ln the pages just ahead the names and faces of the lllustrlous semors wxll remam forever IN MEMORIAM 4 X x if' L I Eldon Calton, who entered our class ln the fall of I945, met accldental death nn June, I947 I0 ' . , Q .
