Then, tanglmg with Traer, the Spartans rolled out a I4 I3 conference victory over the hard-luck Red-Hawks. Homecoming brought Ackley and an I8 6 defeat when the Spartans failed to stop the Raiders' shxfty backs and hard hitting line At Eldora, the Spartans came close to an upset until late in the game when the Tigers scored on a long pass which put them out in front and gave them final victory I3-7. The purpose of this interesting activity is to interpret the school accurately to the pub- lic. Under the capable sponsorship of Miss Sue Dodd, assisted by editor Kathryn Beck- man and associate editor Joyce Copeman, thc group meets every Friday at 4:05 p.m. to dis- cuss the past and future news coverage. The highlight of each meeting is the weekly lunch which is provided alternately by the members. Another interesting project is the news scrap- book maintained by Teresa Greiner. STAFF The news appears each week in the Grundy Register Every year the editors of the Register present two awards for news re- porting, a S25 savings bond to the student who contributes most to the cause of journalism, and S5 to the student who shows outstanding quality in reporting. These awards were pre- sented to Gloria Nickerson and Marilyn Fred- erick on the Class Day of '48. Participation on the News Staff is a great help in the improvement of writing skills. lt also' gives experience in contacting people, as well as being a service to the school.
