With the retirement ofR. Don Ford last spring, Groveton began the first of many changes. The new principal, Paul Douglas, arrived at Groveton with an impressive background in the educational field. Mr. Douglas began his career in the classroom, teaching U.S. History and Government at Jefferson High School. He rose to become department chairman, and from this position, he moved to the area office where he served as social studies coordinator. He went on to become first an assis¬ tant principal, and then principal at Whittier Intermadiate. When the position at Groveton became vacant, Mr. Douglas was selected to fill it. Stepping into the job of principal in the midst of the third quarter, with graduation preparations, budgets and curriculum planning all underway — in a school with a three-building campus and a diverse student body, Mr. Douglas found himself pleasantly surprised at the spirit of cooperation and friendliness which existed at Groveton. His personable style and genuine interest quickly gained him respect from both students and faculty. With the start of the new school year, Mr. Douglas brought forty students south to Prince William Forest for an overnight leadership conference. It was his hope that by bringing together leaders of the vaidous groups at Groveton, ways of cementing ties between the diverse segments of the Groveton community could be explored. Along with his concern for the spirit of community, Mr. Douglas is committed to increasing school spirit and a sense of commitment to excellence in all aspects of student life. Mr. Douglas has also changed the accessibility of the administration. His high visibility in the halls of Groveton makes him available for ready communication on any and all subjects. Along with this availability has come a sense of increased vigilance. The frequent sight of the adminis¬ trators, when coupled with the new, stricter attendance policies, has made for a less casual atmosphere. Next year, Groveton will see even more change. Due in large measure to the efforts of Mr. Douglas, Groveton will pilot a seven period day, permit¬ ting students a freer choice of electives in the fine and practical arts. These changes, like all innovations, carry with them uncertainties and questions. Whatever the future holds for Groveton, one thing is clear: Mr. Douglas is a welcome addition t o the community.
