Michael We gratefully dedicate this year¬ book to Mr. Jack Hiller for giving 20 years of hard work and support to TIGERAMA. Thank you. I m ■ «f I n - ng blatiHIBl 20 With the retirement ofR. Don Ford last spring, Groveton began the first of many changes. The new principal, Paul Douglas, arrived at Groveton with an impressive background in the educational field. Mr. Douglas began his career in the classroom, teaching U.S. History and Government at Jefferson High School. He rose to become department chairman, and from this position, he moved to the area office where he served as social studies coordinator. He went on to become first an assis¬ tant principal, and then principal at Whittier Intermadiate. When the position at Groveton became vacant, Mr. Douglas was selected to fill it. Stepping into the job of principal in the midst of the third quarter, with graduation preparations, budgets and curriculum planning all underway — in a school with a three-building campus and a diverse student body, Mr. Douglas found himself pleasantly surprised at the spirit of cooperation and friendliness which existed at Groveton. His personable style and genuine interest quickly gained him respect from both students and faculty. With the start of the new school year, Mr. Douglas brought forty students south to Prince William Forest for an overnight leadership conference. It was his hope that by bringing together leaders of the vaidous groups at Groveton, ways of cementing ties between the diverse segments of the Groveton community could be explored. Along with his concern for the spirit of community, Mr. Douglas is committed to increasing school spirit and a sense of commitment to excellence in all aspects of student life. Mr. Douglas has also changed the accessibility of the administration. His high visibility in the halls of Groveton makes him available for ready communication on any and all subjects. Along with this availability has come a sense of increased vigilance. The frequent sight of the adminis¬ trators, when coupled with the new, stricter attendance policies, has made for a less casual atmosphere. Next year, Groveton will see even more change. Due in large measure to the efforts of Mr. Douglas, Groveton will pilot a seven period day, permit¬ ting students a freer choice of electives in the fine and practical arts. These changes, like all innovations, carry with them uncertainties and questions. Whatever the future holds for Groveton, one thing is clear: Mr. Douglas is a welcome addition t o the community. In Paul Douglas ' first complete year as prin¬ cipal, students faced a tighter administration and stric¬ ter county policies, as well as heightened efforts to in¬ crease spirit and unity among the entire school. For two days in Septem ber, 1+0 Students selected from around the school braved the wilderness during a leader¬ ship retreat in Prince William forest, part of Principal Douglas ' plan to improve the school and its image. The teachers and administrators, who donned jeans and ten¬ nis shoes along with the students, led exercises and group discussions on spirit, communication, and leadership. A committee was formed to meet periodically throughout the year to retain the positive attitude begun on the re¬ treat. As the air turned colder, the economy accelerated at a rapid rate in accordance with the holidays. The craze of the Christmas season, Cabbage Patch dolls, became the talk around the school and the country. For 25 dollars and up, plus a long wait at the toy store, a doll could be “ adopted , complete with it ' s own name, diapers, birth cerificate, and other official papers. One figure dominated the music scene with his upbeat songs and entertaining videos: Michael Jackson. The 25 year old superstar, rocketed to the top of the pop, disco and soul charts with eight hit singles and the sale of over 30 million copies of his album Thriller. Resulting from these accomplishments were a record breaking eight Grammy Awards. The record industry received a boost in profits from the musical trend of the year: music videos. Michael Jackson was again a leading figure with his hit videos “Billie Jean ' ' and “Beat It . His video Thriller, costing an un¬ heard of sum of over a million dollars and lasting over 11+ minutes, exhibited the lengths performers would go to produce a video that would appeal to American music lovers. Videos also gave new British groups like Duran Duran and Big Country in addition to the Eurythmics and Culture Club, with androgynous singers like Annie Len¬ nox and Boy George, the exposure they needed to herald in the second British rock invasion. On the serious side, President Regan and his adminis¬ tration demonstrated America ' s strength with an in- 34 tervention on the small Caribbean island of Grenada. Reagan also attempted to retain balance in Lebanon with a multinational marine peacekeeping force. His attempts, however, turned to tragedy on a fateful Sunday morning in October in a terrorist attack on the U.S. com¬ pound in Beruit. Over 160 marines lost their lives in the attack while America lost part of itself in its attempt to keep peace in the middle east. American lives were also lost in the downing of Korean Airline’s flight 007 over Russia, escalating already in¬ creased tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Nuclear disarmament became a political issue as people around the country at the Groveton felt the threat of nu¬ clear war as ABC aired The Day After, moving millions to realize their fear of an attack. There is renewed hope for better relations with the U.S.S.R. though, with the ap¬ pointment of a new soviet leader, Konstantin Chernenko, after the mysterious absence and then death of the previ¬ ous leader, Yuri Andropov. The Equal Rights Amendment failed in the House, but women still continued to move into what had previously been men’s territory. The space shuttle Challenger car¬ ried the first woman, Sally Ride, into space last summer on one of its many journies. NASA also had other firsts, including the first black astronaut, GuionS. BlufordJr., as well as the first untethered space-walk. The Washington Redskins once again turned their city u hog wild” during the football season. The skins compiled the best record in the NFL and achieved a second Super Bowl berth. The enthusiasm turned to disappointment, however, as Washingtonians painfully watched the Skins suffer at the hands of the Los Angeles Raiders. Despite the 38-9 loss, the largest marginal victory in the history of the Super Bowl, 200,000 dedicated fans turned out at a celebration to honor the Skins and give them the respect they deserved. 35 The U.S. Olympic team may have fared poorly in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia during the 1984 Winter Olympics, winning only eight medals, but the team still bore some athletes who will long be remembered in the sports’ world for their performances. The brother-sister pairs skating team of Peter and Kitty Carruthers exhibited American patriotism as they shed tears watching the U.S. flag being raised after they had won the silver medal. Phil and Steve Mahre also moved the American people as they took the silver and gold medals in the Slalom, a first for the U.S. Ski Team. There was yet another joyful surprise of a gold, silver, and fourth pla ce in the Women’s Downhill by Debbi Armstrong, Christine Cooper, and Tamara McKinne. The race for the Presidency began with the Democratic candidates slinging mounds of mud at one another in the first debate of the political season. The candidates spent the rest of the campaign, and the rest of their money, scrubbing clean their reputation. The democratic front¬ runners included former Vice President Walter Mondale, Colorado Senator Gary Hart, and the first black candi¬ date to receive wide-spread support, Reverand Jesse Jackson. As the primaries began and millions began pull¬ ing levers in caucuses across the country, three candi¬ dates, Fritz Hollings, Reubin Askew, and Alan Cranston, dropped out of the race as Mondale and Hart moved to the top to engage in a bitter battle for the party nomination. On the Republican side, President Reagan announced his candidacy in January, just prior to his 73rd birthday. Reagan began his campaign a month later with a move that pleased many Americans; pulling the marines out of Lebanon to offshore ships. 36 Closer to home in Fairfax County, students faced many controversial change ' s in the school system. No¬ smoking became an issue as the county declared all schools would ban smoking next year. Stricter atten¬ dance and substance abuse policies were also put into effect. The crusade against alcohol increased locally and statewide, with widespread talk of raising the Virginia drinking age to 21 despite its recent move last summer to 19 . At Groveton students were forced to buckle down under a tighter administration. In-house became a common ex¬ perience for many students as billboard size hall passes with florescent yellow writing accompanied students on their trips to the bathroom. New and stricter rules regard¬ ing student behavior at basketball games and other extra¬ curricular activities were established, much to the dis¬ may of many spirited upperclassmen who had never been restricted in their actions at the activities. In preparation for the March visit of the evaluation committee, Groveton began primping itself early in the year with a new paint job. As the classrooyns turned bright shades of yellow, blue, green, and even purple, the entire school was given a thorough cleaning while teachers made numerous preparations. Students were told to be on their best behavior to ensure Groveton’s reaccreditation among southern schools. When the 30 educators of the committee arrived, Groveton rolled out its red carpet and welcomed the visitors with a banquet. The school showed its strength in such areas as the fine arts with exhibits and performances by students around the school. As the days grew warmer, graduation for the Seniors seemed very close, and summer for everyone felt just minutes away. But with this anticipation came a tinge of regret as Groveton students and faculty alike realized that the 1983-8j school year would soon be just a collec¬ tion of memories. 37 19 8 A Thirty-six years ago, George Orwell wrote a book about the distant fu¬ ture. He saw a day in which all of mans’ freedoms would be stripped, where privacy and independent thought would no longer exist. When Orwell wrote his book, 198A seemed in the distant future. Suddenly, a ball dropped in a place called Time Square, and the future was upon us. And though the literal 198 A is indeniably here, save a few superficial cases the literary one has fortunately not yet arrived. Some people believe a society such as Orwell’s 198A will never come about. Others believe it could. There are some of us, however, who can see parts of Oceania surfacing in our world today. In Orwell’s Oceania, the citizens were stripped of their privacy by the ever-watchful eyes, present in the form of two-way television monitors in each home, of the all-powerful leader Big Brother. In the real 198A, the “Don’t Shoplift” signs are backed up by peering cameras that perch just above the cucumbers and frozen pizzas in the super-markets. One wonders just how much those little cameras know. In fact, a cable company in Ohio is testing a new type of game show which allows home viewers to play via a two way control box. The cable company is capable of monitoring the responses from each home. The United States government has files on every citizen keyed to Social security numbers, possibly a harbinger of Oceania. Newspeak, the official language in 198A, was used to alter the thought patterns of the people. Clever slogans like “War is Peace” left the Oceanians blind to reality. Our present administration uses jargon of its own sort; the MX Missile is dubbed the “peace keeper”, full scale invasions are referred to as “interventions:, and retreats are called “redeployments”. Of course we’ve all heard of the subliminal messages that flash during movies instill¬ ing uncontrollable urges to buy popcorn. There is no way of knowing who among us has been affected by them, and just how far they reach. These examples, though, are shallow resemblances to George Orwell’s 198A. The prying cameras monitor but do not control thought, the cable game show is for amusement, and the Social Security system is for support and aid in retirement years. One attempt in the direction of Oceania Groveton High School made was the instalation of two-way listening de¬ vices in each classroom similar to Orwell’s telescrenes. Fortunately, the system broke down shortly after it was implemented. Above all we are still free. We should recognize this hallmark year as a sign to protect our individuality and the right to think for ourselves. For in realizing and defending that upon which our society is based, we are ensuring that in the future, there will be no 198A- 38 40 41 42 Who ya ' gonna yell for? Tigers! Tigers! What are ya ' gonna yell? Fight! Fight! Freshman . . . Seniors ... One more time. Fight! Fight! This cheer, along with the many others which have been passed down by Tiger fans over the years, immediately rings a bell in the mind of every Groveton student. It brings back memories of pep rallies and football games where we stood, huddled together on bleachers, screaming and yelling and acting a little crazy, all in the name of the Tigers. Traditionally, Tiger fans have been looked upon as a bunch of “Rowdies” who will do anything, no matter how outrageous, to show support for their team and spirit for their school. This has best been shown by individuals painting their bodies black and gold from head to toe for Spirit Week and by Groveton males donning cheerleading skirts, pantyhose, and lipstick to cheer on their Powder Puff teams. The words “black and gold forever” have not been just another saying here; they have been an attitude that all students have lived with and fought for during their years at Groveton. Other high schools always seem disunited and apathetic in comparison to Groveton and the fans here whose spirit has been unequaled by any in the district. Through good seasons and bad, through triumph and defeat, we have stood next to each other, freshman with seniors, to cheer for our school, to support each other, and to enjoy the high school days that will too soon be gone. We all had something to be proud of; perhaps sometimes not the score on the board, but always the tremendous effort given by the athletes. r y ' Q i,.r ' -C i ■ ,.?., S km ■ I 3L_f? Carol Horton, the Lady Tigers talented coach, has molded girls who never pick¬ ed up a hockey stick before into the most successful team at Groveton. State Champions in 1977 and District Cham¬ pions in 1978 and 1980, the team was the Gunston District Champions again this year. They advanced to Regionals where a shot in the last five seconds en¬ ded their hope of reaching the top. Led by the leadership of Erin Yane and Tegan Holtzman, the intensity of Margie Hunt, and the all-region play of goalie Debbi Hurley, the Tigers ended with a record of 11-1. This team had less experience than previous teams, but be¬ cause of their courage and confidence were able to surpass their predecessors. This should stand as an encouragement to all at Groveton High; that if you have the right mental attitude you can accomplish anything. 46 JUNIOR VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY L to R — Front Row: Julia Ball, Curry Mills, Meaghan Hanrahan, Mary Ebhart, Megan Roberts. 2nd Row: Laura Smith, Marsha Ehle, Eden Springer, Nina Sumlar, Nancy Hersh. 3rd Row: Terri Davis (Coach), Holly Halverstood, Meg David, Rachael Garbow, Carol Diuguid, Nina Ebhart, Susanne Hines. Groveton’s teachers bring their talents from all over the country and even the world. One such teacher is Traute Bueller, who came to Groveton this year from a small town in Northern West Germany. Nancy Brown, who normally teaches both World Cul¬ tures and all four levels of German, and “Frau Bueller” are presently participating in a Fullbright Exchange Program. Brown has undertaken the responsibili y of teaching English to the students in the small town of Zeven where she now resides. Both teachers had initial difficulties in adjusting to the different systems. Bueller thought that her students had to take tests on pop music but later found out what “pop quizzes” really were. Brown was quite amazed at the large amount of cheating that was going on in the German school system and has made attempts to change the situa¬ tion there. Bueller’s teaching is a blend of what she has learned from her experience in Germany, her education at the University of Exeter in Great Britain, and here in the United States at Indiana University. She has also re¬ ceived degrees from the University of Hamburg. Part of Bueller’s experience here at Groveton is her undertaking of the German Honor Society and the Ger¬ man Club. In Germany, school-sponsored sports and clubs are not available to students, so all of our organiza¬ tions have been of great interest to her. Bueller has also made attempts to teach Groveton stu¬ dents a little more than normally required. She has tried to exchange ideas and philosophies which may be strange to her and. her students but will better relations with the students in Zeven and Groveton High School. 159 162 163 166 167 r vWV P o ' HAe i v V W€l V Cv_l a MA -30 K Wn o I9W IS... °[ b ac i cc 5 X x r V $ «A C sr -- 6 V V f v b v A CP 6: h- s a T O I IL O s LL 0 0 2 UJ 2 f- -J -J KD lU J2 fO uT f u ' ' ' , ' X % fY $ 1 “H 00 M eav b ° M t £ ' ' 0 O £ • 3 3 t, 2 St nJ Id O s OO 2 fe o -j 2 o P £ UJ 2 UJ (JD % % o +D© CDD 1 • 4 4v © oo ( 3 T docoV Of !
