' ?« I stand here today with verbal swords, behind moats, atop crum¬ bling walls to deny the seige and raise the tlag high on Groveton — to replace the shroud of humility with the shining banner that this institu¬ tion so rightly deserves, To notice, from this position where I can be heard, the greatness that is ours — not as is typically trumpeted: a cross-secl ion of America nor a mixture of students of d ifferent econom¬ ic backgrounds, But I celebrate today Groveton, the institution of learning of high stature and quality. We have each leaned on Groveton in our trials through these last four years. We students have been picked up at least once by a teacher who saw our steady stride falter, grabbed us as we stumbled, and gave us that swift kick to make us get moving again. Groveton has been good to us — and not that sweet, sappy good that coddles and helps you through but in the end stifles ambition and drive — but the good that leaves all of us free today as greater, stronger people than the September of our freshman year, ready to cut the tie to Groveton and grow some more. To really know — really know why Groveton is so good, you have to sit in one of its classrooms (maybe several.) If only I could put it down in words so other schools might benefit, But I ' ll tell you a little about my own experience. At Groveton, good teachers, of which there are so many, have quick, keen minds that understand their students and how to get them to learn, The emphasis in their classrooms is not on cramming the brain full of useless trivia, but reshaping, as Marvin Hupart says, behavior patterns, or rather than teaching, as Doc Kosek says, causing us to learn, You rarely find a teacher at Groveton lecturing data mindlessly to you, but they will have discussions or talk to you rather than at you about things that their students can tell interest them. And they put in long hours after school, and at night after they leave — and none of them, none of them at all get paid a salary near the value of the effort, knowledge, and dedication with which they perform their labor, And all of you in my class know too that public education — Groveton High School — does work and works well too. I do not deny that we are unique, Some public schools are bad. But we prove that there is nothing inherent in state funded learning that makes it bad. For Groveton cannot be said to have any advantage. In fact, most would consider us struggling against obstacles, So I charge all of you with this, In your celebration, your joyful recounting of the greatness of your senior year or this day, or the fun you had with your friends that crazy water day, or the prom, orjust talks with your best friends, remember the Groveton that is the great institution of learning, Tell people about it, Don ' t ever let anyone, anywhere, any¬ time get away with belittling Groveton or the quality of learning within its walls, Tell people that public education is worth saving. Hold your head high and never be embarrassed or ashamed or wistful that your school is not immediately recognized as prestigious by its name, Celebrate Groveton for Groveton Realize how lucky you are to have gone here. GROVETON ... for individuals, and with the quantity of distinct individuals at Groveton one finds differ¬ ent and varied styles of dress, Anyone who comes to school dressed like this is confused, He has had a morning like most of us have when we can ' f decide what to wear. He isn ' t sure what type of individual to be, and if he can ' t make that decision he shouldn ' t be at school; he should still be in bed, ... someone who comes to school dressed like this, He is either ready for a mountain vacation or is stashing some type of non-academic diver¬ sion, Alfhough the two may look simi¬ lar with the same attire of backpack, hiking boots, scarf, and down vest, their intentions are quite different. While one may be planning his trip to Canada or Alaska the other is be¬ hind Quander planning to paint a dragon on the wall, 26 ... anyone who comes to school dressed like this, wishing he was in college or already rich, more likely the latter, This person can be found wearing docksiders (not the cheap ones), khakis, oxford cloth button down, Shetland sweater, and a knit tie. He will additionally be carrying a large quantity of books, fhe fitles of which he can scarcely read. Finally he will posses whaf he considers an air of intelligence. He is always looking toward the Northeast, the home of the Ivy ' s, unless his girlfriend is sfanding in thaf direction wearing her pink and green flourescent sweater. ... someone who comes to school dressed like this, already knowing he won ' t do much work in class. How can he work in class without any books? There are additional characteristics of fhe studenf who doesn ' f wanf fo be a studenf, He wears torn faded jeans, a rock fee shirt (in this case The Grateful Dead ), and the multipurpose jeans jacket. Don ' t be fooled by fhe jeans jacket everybody has had one of those at sometime. The real give away is the proud atti¬ tude, I been at Groveton four years and I ain ' t never done any homework. ... anyone who comes to school dressed like this. He has starred in at least three Varsity sports. For those who haven ' t played three Varsity sports, however, there are a few ways to fool most onlookers. First, he wears cleats, baseball socks, soccer sweat pants, a football jersey with pads, and a letter- man ' s jacket every day. One last aspect; he looks at everyone as though he could body slam them without straining himself. 27 _ SENIORS MOST COMICAL Emerson Bruns, Sarah Jimenez MOST SPIRITED Susie Pugh, Mike Tayloe 28 SUPERLATIVES BEST ATHLETE Amy Grindlay, Clarence Jones BEST ACTOR AND ACTRESS Kevin Peck, Cathy Eads 29 MOST UNIQUE Kate Potter, Josh Berg 30 i MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Tim Cain Becky Rosenfeld FETV FILM 5063 KODAK SAFETY FILM 50b • FtL M 5063 BEST DRESSED Curtis Layman, Cathy Eads BEST PERSONALITY John Williams, Chrys Peterson 31 BIGGEST FLIRT Reggie Thorne Kris Shirley MOST TALENTED Daniel Ratner, Leonore Musa 32 BEST LEADER Kate Potter, Tarang Amin MOST INTELLECTUAL Angie LaPallo, Tim Cain 33 YEAR IN REVIEW The summer of 1982 like all summers, had been too short, but unfortu¬ nately not at all short of the Middle East violence that existed between the PLO and Israel in Lebanon, Everyone was taking sides; should the United States or United Nations intervened Meanwhile, back at Groveton, changes had occurred, Students returned to a school where the Foreign Language and Learning Disability Departments had switched building locations and there were no longer bells to announce the beginning or end of classes, One counselor per grade level was a change that hit with little impact until the late Fall, when Seniors began applying to colleges, The Senior counselor was given the sole responsibility of processing all college applications, a responsibility that in the past had been divided among several counselors, Political unrest shook the world again inOctoberwith the death of Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev, News of Brezhnev ' s death was mysteriously kept secret for two days before being released by the media, The world sat anxiously by as the struggle for party leadership began, In four days, however, former KGB chief Yuri Andropov had assumed power and was chosen General Secretary of the Communist Party. Bob Wood among other Groveton government teachers kept his classes aware of the Rus¬ sian suspense by writing updates each day on his chalkboard, M Virginia politics came to our school as Fall neared its end, when demo¬ cratic Senate candidate Dick Davis added Groveton to his campaign trail, Davis endorsed Groveton ' s new intant care center and introduced himselt to the Groveton community, He lost a very close election to Mason Hill (a Groveton subdivision) resident Paul Trible, Despite Trible ' s victory, the end ot1982and beginning ot ' 83 was a hard time tor Republicans in general, Reagan ' s economic policies were com¬ ing under close scrutiny as was his 26,4 billion dollar MX missile proposal, The Peacemaker ' ' , and unemployment rose above 10%, The Republi¬ cans saw their worst day on November 2, when they lost many Congres- | . sional and Senatorial races they had expected to win, 11 35 - I The bureaucratic process was exposed to Grovetonites through changes in the school ad¬ ministration, Assistant Principal and 12th grade ad¬ ministrator Glynn Bates left Groveton to become Principal at JEB Stuart after introducing an image building program to the Groveton community, Paula Johnson came trom Edison to become the new Senior class administrator, as Vera Blake moved up to the Assistant Principal vacancy, Phil Turner left Groveton to become the new athletic director ot Lee, and Barbara Brown was ap¬ pointed the Tigers ' tirst temale athletic director, After months ot rumors, Principal R. Don Ford an¬ nounced his retirement and left the school May! Groveton earth science students had a change ot pace trom the Traditional American teacher this year, Richard Mann came to Groveton while Leslie Butz took his position in Great Britain through the Fulbright Exchange Program. This program al¬ lows teachers to switch positions in different coun¬ tries to provide insight tor teaching methods as well as for the benefit of the students. 36 There was no doubt at all to January ' s high point — the Super Bowl success of the Washington Redskins. Throughout an unpredictable season marred by a two month players ' strike, the Hogs, Smurfs and Fun Bunch kept the town on its toes with their near flawless season. Wiley veterans like Joe Theismann and John The Diesel Riggins teamed up with young upstarts like Dexter Manley and Vernon Dean, to form a squad character Washingtonians hadn ' t seen since the days of George Allen ' s over-the-hill gang. Grovetonites showed their support of the home team when hundreds checked out of school to attend a poorly executed, rain-drenched parade. Teachers and administrators showed their support by excusing the absences and allowing the students still in school to watch the parade on T.V. during classes, Groveton ' s student publications had a lot to be proud of this year, as all received high honors for their achievements, The Tiger Rag won a first place award from the National Columbia Scholastic Press, and a Trophy Class award [the highest possible) from the Virginia High School League, Oneirata won a first place award from the VHSL for fheir literary magazine of 1982, and Tigerama won an honorable mention for their ' 82 yearbook from the Fairfax County Public Schools Publications Contest, Although many students may not have heard these achievements announced over the P.A., one an¬ nouncement everyone did hear was the pairing of couples for the Computer Date Dance. [Except in John Hale ' s classroom, where intercom wires had conspicuously been snipped some time earlier in the year.) Although not many hot new romances have devel¬ oped due to the dance, those anxious moments in which the pairs were announced will be hard to for¬ get. The initial enthusiasm wore off by the time the dance rocked around, especially after its two-week delay due to a false alarm for heavy snowfall Snow eventually forced quite a few school closings and delayed openings when a winter forecast as the area ' s worst ever came in like a mouse but turned into a lion, with two feet of snow falling on February. T he snow began on a Thursday evening and kept schools closed until the following Wednesday. The county was originally going to take the days off Spring Break, buf lafer reversed ifs decision and facked on the days after graduation, a change that made Seniors very happy. 37 Intense class rivalry throughout the year prompted trequent warnings trom the administration, who saw such rowdiness as detrimental to school unity, The Seniors dominated the Spirit Week competition, adopting the slogan ' 83 — The Class with Class. They reaffirmed the title on Homecoming Friday, calling in Ridgewell ' s and a strolling violinist to cater a black-tie lunch, The Senior girls dominated the annual Powder Puff Football Game, crushing the Juniors 8-0; the Senior boys showed their legs while cheering them on, and the class of ' 83 proved to be the most imaginative float-makers by winning first prize on Home¬ coming night for the 3rd year in a row. Eventually class enthusiasm transferred over to school enthusiasm and Grove- ton maintained its image of having the loudest and liveliest athletic supporters, Aside from school activities, many students spent their free time at the movies. The past year brought a great many blockbusters in almost every genre. The summer began with Steven Speilberg ' s spectacular releases of both E.T. and ' ' Poltergeist, ' ' Love stories like An Officer and a Gentleman ' ' came later in the yean along side of such comedies as Tootsie ' ' and 48 Hours. ' ' Movies have al¬ ways given people the opportunity to es¬ cape everyday problems, and those who think back on the movies they saw this year will undoubtedy remember the good times with which they were associated. As the M A S H series came to an end after 11 years, Groveton students realized the school year was quickly coming to an end as well, Near-panic was felt by all those whose re¬ search papers were due in two weeks, and especia I ly by the seniors who rea I ized that they only had another quarter to raise their grades from below-the-depths to something at least high enough to be given a diploma. And although no one would ever admit it, Seniors and underclassmen alike were getting slightly melancholy as they realized no other school year could ever be quite like 1983. District player of the week (3 times), Outstanding offensive player, Second team all-district. First team in rushing and scoring, Outstanding ath¬ letic scholar— Football. Lots of people should play football because football is one of the few sports where you can le¬ gally hit somebody. AMY GRINDLAY (12), FIELD HOCKEY, TRACK. First team all region — field hockey, Out¬ standing Player, Regional hur¬ dles competitor, 1,000 meter run competitor, All-regional tournament team — winter track. Everyone should get In¬ volved in sports and give all they can, physically and mentally, The team effort gives the individual some¬ thing nothing else does. ANDY GARBOW (12), TENNIS, SOCCER. Number 1 boys tennis seed (11-12). Last summer I taught 500 underprivileged kids in Israel. It was then that tennis became more than a sport — it became an activity that brought some sort of normalcy fo their lives. 80 SARAH JIMENEZ (12), FIELD HOCKEY, SOFTBALL, BASKETBALL. All-district team, Field Hockey (11- 12). I encourage all girls to play field hockey because it ' s a highly competitive sport that al¬ lows revenge and a lot of excitement through the entire season.” MARY PAT LYNCH (12), TENNIS, SOFTBALL, BASKETBALL. Most outstanding award. Dis¬ trict Doubles Champ, Regional Semi-finals (doubles) — Tennis Tennis can be a very frustrating and emotional game, espe¬ cially when the ball lands only inches out or a shot is missed that was practiced for hours the day before. It can be a very re¬ warding game if that shot goes in — but that ' s the challenge of the game.” DEBBIE HURLEY (11), FIELD HOCKEY, SOFTBALL, BASKETBALL. Highest scorer in the district, 1st team, all-district-girl ' s basketball. Our team is unique because we know that we ' re not great but we never quit. We could be down by 50 points but we still hustle . OUTStANDING TIGERS MIKE MURPHY (12), FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, RUGBY. First team all-district, 2nd team all¬ region, Outstanding defense player — football. We need more participation in sports at Groveton. People ought to be interested in the excitement of competition and playing the game. If a team can face loosing, they come out win¬ ners! . DARWIN FOWLER (12), FOOT¬ BALL, WRESTLING. First Grove- tonite to make it to state finals in 13 years — won second place in his wrestling weight class. I could hardly get through my first wrestling practice six years ago. Wres¬ tling is a weird sport. , . there aren ' t many sports that you would starve yourself for. It ' s satisfying because you only get out of it what you put into it. JANUARIO FESTA (12), SWIMMING, TENNIS. Only swim¬ mer from Groveton to make it to re- gionals. People here don ' t realize how lucky they are. In Brazil, only the rich could swim or play tennis. JEFF RICKARD (12), WINTER TRACK, BASEBALL, Competed in the 55 meter and 300 meter runs at the state track meet this year. Track is the kind of sport where you have to push yourself to your limits even though it involves a lot of pain. It is where you spend hours and hours training for only a couple seconds of competition, but afterwards there is always a good feeling. 81 mm VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Susan Redding Kris Shirley — Co-Caotain Cathy Welsh Gemma Nocon 82 Tabotha Hall Susan Merkli X. S S ' ■ ; ... f Mk J rg Mi He started out as most teachers do, His motivating torce was, I wanted to work with young people, With that spirit in his heart, R, Don Ford worked his way up to become one ot Groveton ' s most highly regarded principals, His story, where Groveton is concerned, started in September ot1962 when he began teaching German and English at the old ' Groveton on Popkins Lane, The quality ot his teaching in German was later exemplified by his contributions to the German book that first year German students now use as a grammar book. In addition to teaching, Ford worked as an assistant coach for the varsity Tiger football team, Four years later, in 1966, Ford ended his role as a traditional teacher and pursued a new experience in the educational system, He transferred to West Springfield High School to become an administrative aide. Ford ' s success as an administratorwas quickly realized, for only one year later in 1967, he was promot¬ ed to assistant principal, He remained in that position for nine years. Then, in 1976, the year that Groveton moved from Popkins Lane to its present location on Quander Road, Ford was chosen above all others to assume the position of head principal at Groveton, Now, nine years later, Mr, Ford looks back at his accomplishments and his feelings about Groveton, I think that I ' ve been responsible for several unique programs; the community education, for example, The idea wasn ' t mine, but I was given the responsibility for it. I implemented the day-care center, to my knowledge the only one in this state. We are now in the process of opening an infant-care center, Hopefully, I have had a modicum of success in promoting harmony and stressing the goals of Groveton High School. The best thing about Groveton is the diversity of the student population, We were one of the first schools back in 1963 to integrate; about a dozen or so black students came to us. That was the beginning of Groveton ' s diversity. But the population cuts more than across racial lines; It cuts across the whole socio¬ economic range, That ' s what makes us a microcosm of the United States, R, Don Ford has reached the pinnacle in his career and finally, after devoting so much of his life towards the education of youth, he has decided to take a well deserved rest. He is retiring. We salute you Mr, Ford, for your many years of service to our school and our community, Thank you. ADMINISTRATION L to R: Dale Eaton, Vera Blake, Robert Elliot, R.
