, ■o ' f h TIGERAMA 1981 ililiii Amanda Moose Delma Studios 4 Chrissie Sayler 6 Greg Betterton 8 9 12 13 TABLE OF CONTENTS FEATURES 16 ACTIVITIES 36 SPORTS 72 FACULTY 114 CLASSES 144 INDEX 256 TWENTY-FOURTH EDITION Groveton High School 6500 Quander Road Alexandria, Virginia 16 1980 was a boom year for the yellow ribbon industry as millions of Ameri¬ cans showed their concern for the plight of 52 fellow countrymen held hostage in Iran by tying yellow ribbons around their “old oak trees.” When their minds weren’t on the hostages, their eyes were glued to their televi¬ sion sets as they waited breathlessly to find out who shot “J.R.” The year was characterized by a general return to traditional ways and values, and, al¬ though Groveton’s moral fiber didn’t seem to be radically affected by the preachings of Rev. Jerry Falwell, the leader of the Moral Majority, some conservative trends were evident on the high school scene. Photo by Delma Studios The year began with the hostage crisis in its second month, and national politics soon made big news as more than a dozen candidates hit the campaign trail in the year-long quest for the presidency. As the candidates came and went, millions of dollars were poured into campaign coffers and spent on packaging the candidates as perfect combinations of John F. Kennedy, Abe Lincoln, and F.D.R. In this flurry of political activity, John Anderson came to prominence as the favorite candidate of many students. As the summer progressed, the eyes of the world were focused on a little known mountain in the state of Washington — Mt. Saint Helen’s, which suddenly ended one hundred years of inactivity with a series of fiery eruptions. Meanwhile, in Po¬ land, the communist economic system was hit by a stormy political eruption. Union leader. Lech Walesa organized his co-workers in unprecedented strikes, shaking up the Polish economy. This made many in the U.S. fearful of a Soviet invasion of Poland. American relations with the U.S.S.R., already strained by a grain embargo imposed to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, remained chilly. The hostage situation, the aborted U.S. rescue mission in Iran, and growing Soviet militarism caused increased concerns about American weakness. In this atmosphere, a new conservative tide swept the nation. The Moral Majority and other right wing groups called for a return to traditional American values and a greater emphasis on military strength. When students returned to Groveton in the fall, many reflected this new conservatism in their style of dress as fashions became more traditional. Blue oxford shirts, V-necked swearers, and tweed jac¬ kets appeared all over the school. Yes, the upper middle class “establishment” look was back — with every girl desperately trying to fit into her new pair of designer jeans (two sizes too small) and iiordes of students attempting to re¬ structure their lives around the tenets of The Official Preppy Handbook. Boys haircuts continued to be shorter and girls tried to look business-like without forsaking the feminine look. As parents applauded this departure from the faded jeans and tee shirt look, many students grumbled about increasing conformity (true, at least half the school has at least one pair of Topsiders boat shoes tucked away in their closets.) 20 Photo by Delma Studios As 1980 turned to 1981, the hostages came home and Americans went into the voting booths and pulled Republican levers, bringing Ronald Reagan and a more conservative congress into office. We replaced our bags of peanuts with bowls of jelly beans and proceeded through life as usual. The ex-actor faced his new responsibility boldly, with proposals for balancing the budget, increasing defense spending and cutting taxes. His job was not easy, restructuring an economy where prime interest rates were hitting above 2(X7c and the big three automakers were on the verge of becoming the big two. Reagan and his advisors set their sights on cutting the fat out of welfare and dismantling the Department of Education in an attempt to concentrate on the government’s basic functions. 21 Groveton musical tastes also reflected a return to the basics. Although hard-driving rock and roll still predominated as the musical force at Groveton, many groups were returning to more traditional ar¬ rangements and a number of older bands enjoyed renewed popularity. Noteably leading the rock scene was Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss,’’ who re¬ leased a new double album. The River. He was joined by other artists like Tom Petty, Pat Benatar, and Joe Jackson who wrote songs which ad¬ dressed the problems of today’s society. Disco saw its final days, and Stevie Wonder returned to regular airplay with a new album. Two older groups experi¬ enced a rebirth as millions of people bought al¬ bums by The Doors and The Kinks. The deaths of John Lennon, John “Bonzo’’ Bonham, and Bon Scott sent fans around the world into mourning and spurred sales of records by The Beatles, Led Zeppe¬ lin and AC DC. The southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd continued to be influential, even though their last original material was released over three years ago. The only major progressive trend in rock was introduced by the reggae-influenced Police, otherwise there were few new directions in popular music. 22 Although 1980 was not an ambitious year for rock n’ roll, it was a year of many changes in other areas. But, while the newspaper headlines described increas¬ ing Soviet aggression, the controversy over draft registration, and the changing situation in Iran, most students seemed more upset by $8.99 record prices. — Jonathan Morduch David Keir Don Laux 23 HOMECOMING HOMECOMING COURT — Senior Princesses: Standing — L to R — Jennifer Walker, Sue Staudat er, Carole Redding, Carolyn Windish, Dee Dee Stokes. SUPPORTSERVICES 144 SENIORS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS L to R — Steve Cummings (Treasurer), Brook Sullivan (Vice-President), Debbie Seville (Secretary), Lloyd Milburn (President). 148 The single force which has had the most effect on a large portion of the senior class is gravity, which has tended to bring the class waaay down. After that, it’s probably loud Saturday nights which tend to bring some of us up, afterwhich we lose direction completely (as if we had anywhere to go in the first place). The class’ achievements range from new highs in academia to new lows in degeneration. On the academic side, there is an unusually high percentage of the class going to Ivy League schools. Although we have only one 4.0 G.P.A., we are the possessors of two N.C.T.E. national writing contest winners — the first from Groveton in eight years. Our three “It’s Academic’’ team members, doubling as National Merit finalists, astounded Washington audiences with a brilliant loss to Eleanor Roosevelt H.S. In addition, we had three Governor’s School participants, two Boy’s Staters, three at Girl’s State — and one who made it all the way to Girl’s nation for the first time in Groveton’s history. Well, enough of that... on the degenerate side, the class includes a football player who was arrested in D.C. on top of a construction tower while dressed in a bunny suit, a junior-turned- senior, several seniors-turned-juniors, and about three quarters of the class who started their senior slumps in fourth grade. Although the seniors can’t brag about their rowdiness at sports events, we can take credit for some of the outstanding players. Our class includes such Groveton athletes as Gary Ford, Pat Woznak, Danny Atcheson, Bobby Pugh and Jennifer Bleakley. The class also has talented indi¬ viduals in other areas — from Amanda Moose, one of the best actresses to ever come out of Groveton’s drama department, to Frank Basile, one of the area’s best male singers. Musicians include members of two popular local bands, the Teez and Allusion, and Jim Cooper, the first chair trombonist in the all-state band. Other seniors have racked up a sizeable collection of awards for their achievements in art, drama, and the practical arts. For all the criticism the juniors have given us, we have held up fairly well through the year. Although our spirit has not always been demonstrated in outward ways, the seniors have stuck together and made it to graduation with a few bruises, many jokes, and four years to look back on. — Jonathan Morduch David Keir 149 AAMSA, MOHAMMED ADDISON, SHARON I AKBAR,SHAKEEL ALCORN, PAUL ALVEY, THERESA AMIDON, CHARLES ANTAL, DIANE ARAMAYO, RAUL ARATA, ELLEN ARNOLD, JEFFREY SENIORS 150 ARNOLD, SEAN ATCHESON, DANIEL BALDWIN, CHERYL BALL, MARTHA BAMBHA, NEAL BARTLETT, MICHAEL BASILE, FRANK BEAHM, VICKI BELL, BARBARA BELL, KAREN 151 BENNETT, SCOTT BENTON, RALPH BETTERTON,GLEN BILLINGS, JOHN BISHOP, JIM BLAKE, SUSAN BLEAKLEY, JENNIFER BLUNT, PAUL BOBOTEK, JAMIE BOLEY, MARY BOOTH, LINDA SENIORS 152 I I I BOOZE, DONALD BOUGIE, ALICE BOWMAN, RONALD BRADFORD, TARI BROWN, DANIEL BROWN, DONALD BROWN, LOIS BURCHAM,DARLA BURGHAM,STEVE BUSSE, RICHARD 153 CABLE, FRANCIS CAIN, GREGORY CAMP, TAMMY CAMPBELL, PAGE CHAMBERLIN, CHARLES CHENG, ANDREW CHETTLE, MICHAEL CHINSAMMY, RICHARD CLARK, MARGARET CLARK, SONIA CLAYTON, SUZANNE 154 CLOVER, PHILLIS A. I 189 During this rather tranquil year, Groveton has pro¬ duced only one overly conspicuous class. They’re those incredibly complex, outspoken, athletically- inclined, reckless, and comical students — the some¬ times pompous, sometimes apathetic, but usually amiable juniors. Throughout the three years at Groveton, the key word for the juniors has been diversity. From aca¬ demic achievers to super athletes, we’ve had them all. Personalities include superstuds and superduds; workaholics and alcoholics; the college-oriented, the vocationally oriented, the drama-oriented, and, of course, the disoriented. And let’s not forget the om¬ nipresent “preppies”. Most of the major excitement this year was provided by the rowdy juniors. At every football game, basket¬ ball game, and pep rally, the juniors made the most noise in the stands. They were led by the most con¬ spicuous junior of them all, Jimmy “Big Mouth” Col¬ lins. Still, most juniors have trouble trying to think of any really exciting events over the year. Homecoming week created many rumors as con¬ troversy surrounded the disputed float contest and the junior princess elections. The winter progressed without incident, interrupted only by a large ski trip to Sugarbush, Vermont. The rest of the year consisted of waiting for senior pranks, waterday, and the other eccentricities tradi¬ tionally staged by the senior class. As the year drew to a close, the juniors busied themselves with thinking about upcoming college applications, S.A.T.’s, and their rise to dominance when they move to the top of the heap in June. Although some think that they’re cocky, and others think that they’re Groveton’s most fun class, nearly everyone will agree that their pres¬ ence was felt this year. — Steve Silverberg Hugh Watkins AHMAD, ANNE AITCHESON, STEVE ALEKNAVAGE, DEBBIE ALLISON, MIKE ANDERSON, KELLY ANDERSON, SIDNEY ASHCRAFT, ADAM ASHLEY, TONY ATHADE, NICOLE BARKSDALE, JAMES BAYLISS, JOYN BEARE, JAMES BEAVERS, BRIAN BENNETT, TONY BENTLEY, QUENTIN BERRIOS, ANNE BETTIS, TINA 192 JUNIORS I BLANKENBECLER, JIM BLANSETT, SHIRLEY BLEVINS, CHRIS BLEVINS, JOHN BOSTIC, MIKE BOUBIN, JOANNE BOYD, RANDLE BRADEN, ROB BRADY, EMILY BRIDGE, JACKIE BROWN, AMY BRUNS, HILLIARD 193 BRYON, HILARY BURRIS, JAMES CALAHAN, NORA CAMP, TAMMY CANNON, CHRIS I I CARNEMARK, MAUN CAREY, VENUS CHAPMAN, SCOTT CHEATHAM, REGGIE CHESIRE, PADEN CHINCHILLA, LUIS CHROBAK, SUSAN CLAY, RUTHANN COBBS, ROBERT COLEMAN, SANDRA COLLINS, JIM COLLINS, JOHN COLLINS, KENNETH COLLINS, TERRI CONNER, LYCIA CONNER, MELISSA CONWAY, DIDI 194 COSTA, FRED CROSS, PHILLIP CRUMPTON, TOM CURRY, RICHARD DAILEY, MARK DANIELS, DWAYNE DAVIDSON, ZYNULENE DAVIS, ROBERT DEARBORN, JAMES ( t DEB,SABRATO DEGIORGI, ANGELA DELAINE, KEVIN 195 DELAY, ROBERT DIEKOFF, PETRA DINSMORE, CARLA DRENNING, LINETTE DUNBAR, DERON EARLY, JEANNINE EIFERT, JOHN ELKINS, DEBORAH ELLER. But each year sopho¬ mores have filled the same desks, hallways, and bleachers, each defending the sophomore name and each leaving it behind. Climbing through junior and senior roles, the sophomore stage is just another part of the plan. But we are actually here. Struggling to make our place among classes above us, and yearning to be rid of what is already behind us. This is a year that is handling our future for us, telling us what we should learn and giving us help in doing so. Today Mrs. Cabry called our class “sophomoric.” Can you believe that? Obviously not believing that it was a cut-down, twenty-four students jumped up to the dictionary and discovered that, yes, it was. Sophomoric (-mor’ik), adj. Of, pertaining to resembling, or characteristic of a sophomore; hence, immature: shallow; bombastic; superficial. So much for pride in the sophomore class. We were about to look up freshmanic, juniority, and senioramia, but there are only fifty minutes given to us for English, and today we were going to revise our papers. Wasn’t this the same thing we did when we were freshman? Actually I can’t quite remember. That was soooo long ago . . . Maybe next year we can start helping the school. And as seniors we’ll leave here. I won’t worry about that yet. After all, we’re only sophomores . . . sophomoric sophomores . . . — Katherine Potter 213 AGUON, ANITA AGUON, JOHN ALCORN, PHIL ALEXANDER, LORIE ALLEN, SAM ANDERSON, TED ARAMAYO, ERIC ARATA, LIZ ARGENTINE, LYNN BAKER, CHERI BARKEIT, SANDRA BARTHOLOMEW, JON BERG, JOSH BETTERTON, GREG BOLDEN, ALBERT BORROR, MELODY 214 SOPHOMORES BRADLEY, SELINA BRISTER, JACKIE BROWN, ELISABETH BRUCATO, PHILIP BRUNS, EMERSON BRYAN, BRIAN BRYAN, DAVID BRYAN, GREG BUMBREY, MARIA BURRIS, CINDY BURTON, DONALD BUSSE, MARK 215 BUTLER, NATALIE CAIN, TIM CAMPBELL, KIM CANNY, SARAH CARNEMARK, JAKOB CARTER, WAYNE CHRISTIAN, JENNIFER CHRISTOFFERSON, NILS CLARK, ROBERT COLLINS, GEOFF COLLINS, KEVIN COLLINS, LISA COOKE, CASSANDRIA COOPER, MICHEALA CONDREY, RALPH CROMLEY, JOHN D ' ANGELO, STEPHANIE DAVIS, DAVID DECKER, TIKADONAH DENTY, BRUCE DETWILER, JOANN DEVIER, JON 216 DIUGUID, MARTHA DONOHUE, MARK DOTTERRER, CAROL EADS, CATHY EDGE, DEBBIE ELLIOT, R. It ' s not hard to get in¬ timidated on the first day of school; first period, Ms. Harris assigned three chapters of reading, and second period, we found out that our French teacher didn ' t speak English. And the day had just begun . . . We suffered through the first week, listening when people told us that we were in Gunston, when we were really in Quander and that our gym class was in Groveton ' s new annex down the street. After a while, our classes settled down, and things became permanent. Orientation lectures were over and the work began to pile up. We were getting used to being confused about which side of Quander we were in. Then came the first pep rally. The freshmen huddled in a group just waiting to be laughed at. Cheers filled the gymnasium. Getting the courage up, we yelled back. That was when I knew that there was hope for the next three years . . . maybe. — Susan Morduch We, like the other freshman in the past, have had our share of abuse — having to sit in the back of the bus, being told to wait for non¬ existent elevators, and believing the stories about Groveton ' s new 25 meter indoor swim¬ ming pool . . . We have taken it all in stride. We are now used to the profane jeers from the upper classmen. As we sit here, suffering constant abuse and torment, we know in our hearts that when next year ' s freshmen arrive, we ll be twice as ruthless, degrading, obnoxi¬ ous, and intimidating as any class at Groveton has been. — Kathleen Keville Cathy Welsh Laura Silverberg 232 In a whirl of mixed emotion, we planted unstable feet on the grounds of the campus on the first day of school. Wobbling through the day, most of us gained a little insight about the Groveton scene. The first day reluctantly led to the second, as our mouths still gaped open in awe. We, however, were not the aver¬ age freshman class. Of course, our share of ridicule was received, but we survived the annual ritual. The hundreds of clubs and activities began to catch our eyes, as did parties we sometimes visited. Grove- ton was helping us mature and grow. As the year wore on, we became thankful that it will be Groveton’s familiar halls in which we will spend the next three years — These halls which offer a quiet refuge when the rest of the world is breathing down our backs. — Susan Merkli Upon first encountering Groveton, I felt, to say the least, a bit confused. On the first day I had to keep reminding myself that everyone was just as lost as I was. This was not too difficult, because all of the freshmen were easily spotted stumbling around and asking for directions. I was constantly reminded throughout the day that I was a freshman, but it didn ' t distress me too much. I had other things to concentrate on. Like remembering my teacher ' s name and finding my way from right Ouander to left Ouander without getting lost in that vast unknown called the lower media center. — Jean Campbell 233 ALEKNAVAGE, JOHN ALWYN. ZIEGLER, LAURIE ZIEGLER, NICOLETTE 252 253 Groveton ' s distinguished teachers are well known for their idiosyn- cracies and their talents, both of which are many. Of course, as stu¬ dents, we tend to minimize the talents and accentuate the idiosyn- cracies — to do anything else would be abnormal. So, we make a big deal of the fact that our teachers make fools of themselves at pep rallies and basketball games, act more like teenagers than adults, tell terrible jokes, give boring lectures, and articulate bizarre political opinions. We love to make snide comments about their mental facul¬ ties and complain about massive homework assignments. And yes, sometimes we even stoop to stealing their chalk and hiding their eras¬ ers. However, while we do enjoy making fun of them, we also recognize the unique contributions that they make. From time to time, others recognize them for their efforts as well. And when a teacher receives an honor or an award, as Madame Williams received from the French Embassy this year, we feel the same kind of pride as we do when one of our fellow students is honored. Above all, we realize that it takes a special kind of person to become a teacher — willing to put up with the idiosyncracies of teenagers. We appreciate the dedication, al¬ though we often fail to show it. 254 255 OME MiNG 24 HOSA C.-39 ADEMIC HATIONAL MEflIT 33 f J ' r ■ . iJPal, i[lDj( - - ' •■ ■ ' !WBSlNE8yl32 ' - - . r AFET RtAS taff 141 ' ‘T GHAMBER-SINGERS 61 CHEERLEADERS 80 - ' CHILD DEVELOPMENf 50 CHRISTIAN LIGHTHOlj| LUB 50 - CLASSES — FRESUj — 230 SOPHOMORE JUNIOR— IM KiOEJ— 146 CLOWN 71 COLO| RD Ttf-s BAND 69 ' CONCERT CHOIR 62 ' , ' CRfl COUNTRY 87 CimiDIANs’lfl DEBATE TEAM 48 ; ‘ iBECASS ' ' DRILLTEAM 88 ' ENGLISH OEPARTMENT 120 ENGLISH TEAM 48 FACULTY 114 FBLA54 FEATURES 16 FHA55 FIELD HOCKEY 84 FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT 137 FOOTBALL 76 FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT 130 FRENCH CLUB 43 FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY 42 FRESHMAN OFFICERS 231 GASP 60 GERMAN CLUB 45 GERMAN HONOR SOCIETY 44 GIRL’S STATE NATION 34 GOLF 110 GOVERNOR ' S SCHOOL 33 GUIDANCE 118 GYMNASTICS 97 jmH FFICERS 189 KEYS 51 KEYETTES - --learning Dia lTIES 135 LIBRARIANS 142 MARCHING BANa,68 MATH DEPARTMEN 12i MATH TEAM 49 _ ' NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 4 i-.y , PHYSIC AL EDUCATION 133 PRACTICAL ARTS DEPARTMEfJY 140 ' SAC 38 SCA38 I SENATE 39 SENIOR DIRECTORY 184 SENIOR OFFICERS 147 SENIOR SUPERLATIVES 26 , SOCCER BOYS’ — 102 GIRLS’ — 104 SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT 123 SOFTBALL 108 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS 211 SOUL SQUAD 112 SPANISH CLUB 47 SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY 46 SPORTS 72 STAGE CREW 56 SUPPORT SERVICES 141 SYMPHONIC CHOIR 62 SYMPHONIC BAND 69 SWIMMING DIVING TEAM 98 TENNIS BOYS — 100 GIRLS — 82 THESPIANS 57 TIGERAMA 64 TIGER RAG 63 TOP TEN 32 TRACK WINTER — 96 SPRING — 111 VICA 52 WGBS 63 WRESTLING 99 For Reference Not to be taken from this library
