We ' ll go on to Phase seven (probably) college. 6 Phase eight — a job, family, two weeks paid vacation. Phase nine — retirement, gradual settlement into the ooze. Phase ten — you-know-what. But don ' t let it phase you. David Rosenfeld ' 81 7 I FANTASIZE . . ■Mi ' .. I fantasize and let fly my dreams, and unleash all the happiness and escapade my mind holds. From the harsh realities of life I retreat, into the labyrinths of thought which bring solace. To the world of free emotions, limitless imagination, and utter contentment I speed, on carefree wings of fancy. With all the whimsey my soul can muster I sit, among the characters of make-believe and wish away every troubling thought in the world. Chris Cannon ' 82 10 11 THE SYMPHONY A tire swishes on the wet road, applauding the start of the symphony A crow sets the tempo with three loud, short caws. And the crickets begin to chirp, starting the background harmony. A passing plane ' s low rumble fades in and out throughout the song. The whistling wind, whirling through a deserted stage, softly sounds a low pitch. Far away a solo car-horn blows, adding a discordant note to the melody. A door silently opens, yet bangs shut a crashing drum. A nightly virtuoso sweetly sings clearly above all others. More voices join in, echoing against the solemn walls Light drops of rain patter, keeping a steady, even beat. Now the crickets reach a forte as the curtain of day comes down Although they make a decrescendo, their song plays endlessly. — Libby Horne ' 83 14 15 i ' m scared. On my little chair. In my house, within an immense continent of different people, i sit afraid. An Immense Continent — but insignificant relative to the world. THE world — what a selfish, narrow-minded, self-centered statement. There are many, many thousands of worlds we know of and extensive quantities of worlds we don ' t. In those worlds, that make up the universe, THE universe . . . there must be forms of life who think, work, play, love and fear . . . Here I sit, obviously so insignificant . . . SO TELL ME!!!!! why do matter so much? — Mary Trigg ' 80 19 We, and Groveton of Quander Road, started high school together. The body of this school, which we have created, will always be a part of us, although soon, we will be apart from it forever. I hope those who follow our tiger paws continue to support one another as they watch each other grow together, and apart — as we have. Melissa L. Stone 4 years, it was 4 years ago that I first came here. The buildings were swarming with people. Every freshman was gloating because even the seniors were lost. So much has happened so fast. Sure there were bad times — homework in excess, pop quizzes, jammed lockers, forgotten assignments and arguments. But what about the laughs — the food fights and practical jokes, the cow imitation in French, the exploding chem lab, the lunches at Mickey D ' s, the chicken that abused your Bio notebook, the “pass from guidance . . . and the friends! It wouldn ' t have been the same without them, the people you could study with, fight with and share your worst problems with. Friends . . . I ' ve lost some, gained some, gained some and some I ' ll have for life. After 4 years at Groveton what I ' ve come away with are memories . . . and friends. — Nick Lapp 20 Following the first day is a first date, a first party, a first car, a first prom and a first week-end without the higher authority. High school is one place where one never remains in his first year. At GHS four years ago, we were all firsts at the same time, neither the seniors nor the freshmen knew where their next class would be. In anxious anticipation, we, the lowest form of underclassmen, watched others experience their first junior-senior-waterfight-day, balloons bursting in air and on people. Next came community day, a talent show and Sun-day. Shortly after followed a senior skip day and a senior prank, the hilarious joke of the year, signifying spirit and good humor. After patiently waiting in line, it ' s our turn now. We created a two-day leadership seminar to help bridge the gap between students and administrators. And it worked! R. Don Ford was the guest star in Up the Down Staircase, the drama department ' s fall production. Finally, our football team won a homecoming game, but to everyone ' s amazement, the seniors placed last in the float competition. This school year contains oodles of imagination which created the first inspirations for Crazy-day and the B.S. Moose. With headlines such as unlicensed driver swiped by parked cars and advertisements like buy a trashcan for your loved ones today! , it ' s almost impossible to listen to P.A. announcements without a chuckle or two. The Class of 1980 is Groveton ' s past, present, and future. Only yesterday, we merely observed. Today, we are participating, but tomorrow we will start all over again. Melissa L. Stone 21 22 L Dedicated to Uncle Milt, without whom this was all possible As the Tree of Life began to fade And summer passed us by The Junior Class, advanced a grade, Returned to Groveton High. The brick facades, the endless chips The carpet on the floors, The Tiger Paws, the commons The rooms that have no doors The Sedentary Juniors The seniors-on-the-move ' ' The VICA Club, the NHS The Soul Squad (in the Groove) All comprise the humble school We know as GHS A noble and much favored place Ah . . . but I digress . . . Four years is a long time to spend in an institution . . . like Groveton, and the senior class seems to be showing many signs of strain. They have outdone their predecessors in eccentricity, if not in diversity. A new social order emerged at the beginning of the year and masses of seniors congregated at night and rallied to the sounds of Van Halen, George Thurogood, the Knack, and DEVO with occasional offerings of Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band (with the Rootettes). A group of semi-intellectual pseudo-jocks established themselves as the B.S. Moose, decorated the roof of the concession stand, and secured their place in Groveton history for eternity (or at least a year or two). Meanwhile, several grade-conscious seniors were making plans to assassinate the 2 newest members of the Class of 80 — both defectors from the Junior Class who, with their 4.0 grade point averages dashed the college hopes of many seniors, forcing them to set their sights on less lofty goals, such as weaving and candle-making. In the meantime, our noble student body president dragged the little Moosies and 60 other students out to the woods to a Leadership Seminar. Upon return from the seminar the leaders of the senior class were amazed that the school had run so i smoothly in their absence. This reveals, at long last, a fact that many of us had known all along, that it was really the Juniors who were running the school. To add insult to injury, the seniors then lost the coveted first prize in the Homecoming float competition an honor usually won by the graduating class. During the 4-year presence of the Class of ' 80, Groveton has seen many radical changes, as witnessed by the character of the Senior Class, and In conclusion, you must admit, It takes all kinds and sorts And so to all our Senior friends — A parting Eat my shorts. Jonathan Morduch David Keir 24 DIARY OF A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT I was at my locker when the intercom came on. All students, began Mr. Ford, with last names beginning with H-M should report to the left cafeteria in Quander for their WT-100 forms unless you have turned in your form already. If that is so, then report to the right cafeteria at ten o ' clock and tell your counselor that you ' ve turned it in unless your name begins with J-K. If that ' s so, then report to the lower media center at one o ' clock and tell them that. Thank-you. I stepped outside and headed for Gunston. I had to reset my watch twice as I went through two time zones. I nearly fainted from the smell when I went inside the locker room. But managed to stay on my feet and dressed hurriedly. Today was my tennis lesson. Okay, class, said the teacher. Pick up your tennis balls. The ball is our friend. Pick up your tennis racquets. The racquet is your friend. Don ' t beat your ball with your racquet. All I want you to do today is hit the ball against the wall with your racquet. Okay? Good. After my tennis lesson, I went to my next class, history, which is so unnecessary. I mean, if history always repeats itself, I ' ll just sit here and watch everything happen again. Who can tell me what we talked about yesterday? asked the teacher. I sank down into my chair. The teacher spotted me. Young man, he said, you don ' t appear to be paying much attention. Can you tell me, in one word, about the famous Italian astronomer, Galileo? I looked up. Dead. In math I sat near the door so I could get out quickly to avoid the lunch line. The teacher spent the whole period explaining that a plane looked like the cover on her kitchen linoleum. She was just about to get into depth about her bathroom wallpaper when the bell rang. I ran to the cafeteria and bought the main lunch, which was a mistake. My green beans were alive and well, but the chicken who gave me that thigh probably never was. The milk leaked to form a puddle in the corner of the tray. I threw the food away and went to my next class hungrier than when I entered the lunch room. French was pretty uneventful. The class spent the entire period watching the teacher make nasal vowels. Finally, the bell rang. In English we had a substitute, a woman who just didn ' t know what was going on. Your teacher has told me, she began, that you ' re working on entry 26 — Mental Disorders of Mice. What ' s a journal? some of the class said innocently. What class am I in? They kept up this routine until the bell rang. Finally! My last class of the day, biology. We were going to dissect a frog. My partner let me have the honors of cutting out the vital organs. I began with the heart. I did it slowly and watched her eyes widen as she clutched at her stomach. She ran out when I reached the liver. I finished cleaning up as the class e ded. I ran out the door to catch my bus. I was almost to it when the front of the long line of buses began to move. I spotted my bus, unmoving and with the door still open. I ran to it and went inside. I found the nearest seat and sat down. The bus lurched, and we were on our way. I looked around and saw strange faces watching me curiously. Oh, no, I thought. I ' m on the wrong bus. Timothy Cain 25 26 i Mjvjfi REMINISCENCES When the Class of 1980 entered the New Groveiun in September 1976, everyone else was just as lost as we were. Like all freshmen, we had to get used to pep rallies, football games, and SENIORS. But we were like the SENIORS in one way that year because we all had to get used to Gunston, Quander and Spring Bank. That first year we struggled to find a place. Those SENIORS seemed so old and grownup. Would we ever be that old? The differences were probably the most obvious at pep rallies. The SENIORS would yell things at us as we sat there not knowing what to do. By the end of the year, we knew what to do, and we could almost — almost — yell back. We had to show them who we were. Sophomore year brought more learning. Just when we thought we knew who we were, we were back in limbo again. We weren ' t the cute little f rosh anymore, but we sure weren ' t SENIORS. The Class of 80 became known for its school spirit and involvment. Upperclassmen started to notice us. Winning first prize for the homecoming float didn ' t hurt either. We endured many things, including bad publicity for the school after The Shooting. The Sophs did their best to keep up a good image for the school. Then, junior year. Almost there. We accomplished a lot. SENIORS looked at us and felt envious of grades and test scores. We made the most of a diffic ult situation when GHS temporarily became Ft. Grunt. We had our club and class meetings and put on the Prom. Remember all those awful fund-raisers (that terrible dance!)? But still, we enjoyed our free afternoons of the split-shift while it lasted. Then there was the start of the rowdies. The Juniors prepared to take over for the SENIORS when they got ready to retire their togas. And now we are SENIORS. Carrying on the traditions. Senior pranks, parties (with a lot of Sophs), and waiting. Waiting to get out, waiting to hear from colleges, waiting to find what ' s out there. After enduring 3 years of lost homecoming games, we watched Groveton win its first homecoming game in 11 years. A fitting send-off for the Class of 80. And so here we are. Waiting and watching. Passing the time in classes, clubs, parties, anything to make the time go faster. But it will probably seem too fast when it ' s over. Graduation will come and we ' ll wonder if we ' ve done everything we needed to do. We ' ll wonder if it was worth it. I think we ' ll find that it has been. Good luck, SENIORS! Amy Killpatrick 27 ' -■ A ' fr. . .... , ' ■ a ' . w ■ • -. .I ,w - J . . • .r J 1 A voice comes over the P.A. Please pardon the interruption. Will John Doe please report to Mr. Price ' s office. A wave of mass sympathy for John Doe passes over the school. Visions of John sweating it out in front of a human brick wall pass through everyone ' s mind. What ' d he doP What ' ll Price do to him? To many Groveton students, Charlie Price is just a voice over the P.A. To others, he is an awesome figure (some say bear-ish), walking the halls looking for skippers. Most students, if asked, would say that it ' s best to stay on Mr. Price ' s good side. But there are a lot of things students don ' t know about Mr. Price. Very few, if any, students know that Mr. Price didn ' t set out to be an administrator. He started out playing football. At Parker-Gray High School in Alexandria, he was a tackle (good practice for administration?). His senior year he was team captain (with a graduating class of 32 students, he was also the drum major and was involved in student government and the choir). At Virginia State College, where he earned the nickname Bruiser, he became a fullback, making All-American in 1946. After finishing college, Mr. Price returned to Alexandria to teach history at Parker-Gray. In 1947, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dons of the All American Confer¬ ence. After working with the L.A. team for several weeks, Mr. Price was sent to play for the Hawaiian Warriors to get more experience. As first-string fullback, he helped lead the Warriors to the Pacific Coast League championship in 1947. The next year Mr. Price was teaching Health and P.E. and coaching football and basketball at Addison High School in Roanoke. After 1 1 years, he moved to Fairfax to coach football and track at Luther Jackson High School. In 1964, Jackson won the state tournament with an undefeated record of 9-0. In 1965, Mr. Price went to Langley High School where he made history. He became the first black head coach in Northern Virginia. He coached at Langley for 5 years. Mr. Price came to Groveton in 1970 and now after 10 years is making plans to retire at the end of the year. It ' s really a shame that most students don ' t get past the authoritative front of the administrators. Mr. Price is fascinating to talk to — and he loves to talk. He has a reputation with many faculty members as a great story teller. He loves to talk about fishing, his favorite pastime. He jokes about the times that he ' s spent whole days on the ocean in chartered fishing boats, catching either sharks or nothing at all. Mr. Price also enjoys talking about gardening; he takes great pride in his azaleas which, he says, he sticks in the ground anywhere he can dig around the tree roots. To most students, Mr. Price will always remain a voice on the P.A. and a human brick wall. But the few lucky ones who get a chance to talk to him will remember Mr. Price as a friendly, concerned, and funny man. It is somehow very rewarding to discover that administrators can be people too. 29 SENIOR PRINCESSES: — L to R — Laura Mead, Kathy Arata, Colleen Murphy, Simone Goring, Joan Sheridan, Denise Rippert, Mary Ann Cromley, Sheila Jones, Adneatria Parker. Yet still, hand in hand we go Your grip though not tight, is firmer than mine for I am swayed by the pull of another ' s might You wait confident in the knowledge that I am merely delayed And still, hand in hand we go I am reverent at your touch, For You have held the hand of many a great man, I reflect and dare to hope that I am such as those with whom you clasped hands And on, hand in hand we go Oft ' I lose sight of You, for another of a brighter countenance vies for my regard You scoff, knowing that there is room for only two At the end of this earthly yard As hand in hand we go on until you drop my hand and take that of another on your endless journey ' — Mary Trigg Mary Jane Weiford August 4, 1938 - August 7, 1979 Ernest Evans July 3, 1917- February 12, 1980 indEH miF ' mmm !
