Alexandria, VA 22306 3 H.irry Choi 4 Alan Fischer Kelly McManus Pearl Levenson 7 8 The trees are empty for the winter; the school is empty for the clay. The late buses leave; the last dented Volvo |duIIs slowly past Gunston. The final footsteps echo on the sidewalk as they head to¬ ward Quander Road. Nobody ' s here. But the ground ' s as hard as concrete under cafeteria carpeting, and what little grass there is waves bravely from the icy mud. Nobody sees the scrawny maple tree behind the school — naked and shivering as if it had hourly updates on the wind chill factor. Its branc hes and the sky make a frozen filagree, and when the air slides through it just so, it whistles softly in the cold. It ' s the only sound there is on this Groveton winter afternoon, but there ' s nobody around to hear it. Nobody ' s ever around for Groveton winter after¬ noons. It gets dark too ciuickly to really do any¬ thing, after all. And it ' s always so cold. Looking at empty trees. Peggy Green Alan Fischer lonas Carnemark 11 Kelly M( Manus 12 Kelly McManus Pearl Levenson 15 Hanging in the sky, the sun sinks behind the western edge. It ' s night here now. It ' s morning somewhere else. When one day is over, another day takes its place. When one thing is finished, another begins. Maybe that ' s important. Then again, maybe it ' s not. We are so small in comparison to the sun, the sky, the universe. We really don ' t mean much at all. Then again, maybe we do. — Peggy Green •. ‘ • ' ' f v’- • •■ ••’ .. .■ . • ' •• ' Mr. Ford, Principal 19 Mr. Beardmore, Assistant Principal Mr. Price, Assistant Principal Ms. Bates, Administrative Aide 21 Mr. Berry, Administrative Aide Mr. Frazee, Director of Athletics and Stu¬ dent Activities 22 Mr. Gottschalk, Administrative Aide 23 24 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT, LEFT TO RIGF T: Mrs. Forbes, Mr. Bolland (Dept. Such a teacher can he many things. One may have a dee[), com|Kehensive knowledge of her suhject. Another may have the ability of bringing out hidden talents in her students. Still another may |:)ossess the gift C3f eliciting real enthusiasm for learning. Dorthie Kogelman has brought all these talents to the many hundreds of students who have passed through her hands in her twenty years at Groveton. Talking to her, it becomes inc reasingly clear that she is a unic|uely committed, caring human being, as w ' ell as a dedicated protessional. In Mrs. K ' s reminiscenc es, names of past [iroduc tions and former students come up again and again. Yet she retuse s to highlight any as special or more important in any way. Each |:)rocluction, each grou|) ot students, occupies all her energy and attention at a given time. She involves herself totally in the project at hand, bringing amazing amounts of vitality and drive to all her efforts on the stage and in the curriculum. She is unremittingly disci|)lined, and, by re(|uiring the same discipline of her students, she [produces the aura of professionalism for which Groveton productions are noted. Theatre is very muc h a group process. One of Mrs. K ' s greatest gifts is her ability to inspire her students with a sense of loyalty and commitment to the production c ()m|:)any. The show must go on does not begin to ex[)ress the solidarity of pur[)ose that exists backstage. Whatever one ' s feelings toward a co-worker, it is an unwritten law that the es[)rit de cor[:)s of the company and the show as a whole are more important than any one actor or actress. A wonderful example of Mrs. K ' s active participation in the group process was this fall ' s Godspell . I ' m aglow with what ha|:)penec! in Godspell , says Mrs. K., referring to the strong company feelings and student creativity in that production. The re- S[)onse has l)een overwhelming. But Godspell is only one in a long line of distin¬ guished high school theatre works directed by Dorthie Kogelman here at Groveton. Significantly, she does not see these as her own successes; she says that she feels priveliged to have worked with such talented people: Achievement is within each person! Mrs. K is able to infect her students with an enthusiasm and a respect for their work. She and her actors, technicians, and |)roduction staff often work from 2:30 to I 1 :00 at night to put together a Groveton [production. She treats her students as adults and professionals. In return, she expects adult, professional behavior from them. Dorthie Kogelman has been at Groveton for twenty years. But the moment is the great thing, she says, Life changes, society changes. What makes Mrs. K. special, though, is her ability to show that she is interested in each person she deals with. It is this CjLiality that has been such an influence in so many students ' lives. She is a uniciue and dynamic lady. She cares. Laurie Hirschfeld i ■ You can always tell who the drama people are. They: a. enunciate better than most of us, b. and speak reverently of Dorthie Kogelman. Now, I have never met Dorthie Kogelman. In ninth grade, when all those first year drama students came back with glowing reports of their classes and D.K., I didn ' t know what they were talking about. “Decay? I thought, What about decay? I am singularly unquali¬ fied to write about this lady. But here goes. Drama is illusion. It is pretending, it is fakery. Its whole thrust is to make things appear what they are not. Behind all this fakery, though, is a formidable dose of reality. Her name is Mrs. K. Though she refuses to take credit for the success of Grovetons drama department, Dorthie Kogelman has certainly had something to do with it. She is, in fact, the driving force behind it. She is a tiny woman with enor¬ mous energy. Peggy Green, Features Editor 135 137 138 139 STAGE CREW, Left to Right; |im Rousseau, |im Martin, Tom Hickey, Barbara McKenna, Robert Miller. I 140 I LI 141 FEATURES f fhv iilsice 142 This school gets no respect. We are something of a joke in Area I; if Fort Hunt was an editorial in Stars and Stripes , if Mount Ver¬ non was a slick coffee table book on a slick subur¬ ban coffee table, then Groveton would be the Na¬ tional Equirer . We ' d be True Confessions and Mar¬ vel Comics all rolled into one. We ' d be the kind of school your blue haired aunt would read under the dryer at the beauty parlor. People make fun of us. They call us Grits, though few of us are of that persuasion. They laugh at our football team; they paint their schools ' initials over our tiger paws. Even our nice new building isn ' t safe — they sneer at its lack of windows. They call us a Lorton with cheerleaders. People are scared of us. They say we have riots instead of pep rallies. They think we steal hubcaps for fun and profit. They say we wear funny clothes, that we act strange. They say, in eyebrow lifted intimations, that Groveton is Different. They ' re right. Attending Groveton is a peculiar privilege. It does have its rewards. Going to Groveton means having friends whose houses aren ' t identical to your own, friends who aren ' t identical to you. If it ' s not a pretty school, it ' s not as ugly as it was on Popkins Lane, either. Beauty isn ' t conducive to study, anyway. (And Groveton does too have win¬ dows. They line the library; you can stretch out on a bench in front of one and watch the whole day lurch by, if you want to.) If our football team wasn ' t so hot this year, our basketball team was better than most. And our field hockey team was the best in Virginia. No, Groveton doesn ' t get much respect. We ' ve gone without it so long, we probably wouldn ' t know it if they dished it up and served it for lunch in Quander Right. Still, we are not particularly upset about the notoriety of our lack of notoriety. I havt a gray hair. I didn ' t liave it when I got liere. Groveton gave it to me. I first noticed it in eleventh grade, in toiirth [period [ nglisli. Dionne DeNio saw it and [Xilled it out ot my head. I was sort ot sorry when she did tliat; it u ' as interesting, having a gray hair. It was like having six toes on one toot or l:)eing double jointt ' d. When tlie conversation started to lag, you could point to your head and say, Look! I never did do that, though. Conversation was never in such dire straits. Anyway, after about a week, another gray hair a[)[)eared, and I have had it ever since. Silver threads among tlie brown, as it were. It was the mornings. I think, tliat did it. It I have to, I can go from deepest sleep to first [period in twenty-one minutes. It I were to skip Ann Landers, I could [probably do it in eigliteen-live. In any case, I never really wake u|) until third period, by w ' hich time I am so l ored that I fall asleej) all over again. I average about tw ' elve lucid minutes a day. And those are during lunc h. Then again, it might liave l)een the skipping. Now, I do not want to give anyone the impression tliat I spend an unreasonable amount of time not going to c lass. Still, anyone with an armtui of l)c)oks and a [)urt)osetul look in his eye can avoid the administration looking for people avoiding school. I might have gotten my gray hair walking to school. I usually try to drive, but a lot of times when school is starting, my car is not. In the w ' inter, Groveton ' s back field is a crunchy tundra, and it there ' s no snow, there ' s mud. It oozes up into the back of my c logs and my socks slosh for the rest of the day. It ' s miserable. Or, homew ' ork may have done it. Anytime a teac her prefac es an assignment with, I know you have other classes to worry abcjut, l)ut . . . , you know you are in trc)ul:)le. The relationship between what I do and what is due is directly proportional to wdiat is on television that night. And even reruns of_l_ Dream of leannie will beat out trigonometry, every time. I have l)een in the senior slump since the middle of my sophomore year. 1 never thought I ' d make it through the twelfth grade. I do think that molar mass is how much your teeth weigh, and that the Diet of Worms would give a person indigestion, l)ut I ' m not dumb. It ' s just that I have this gray hair. Eighteen is too young to feel old. 1 145 We were talking the other day about school, and why we go there, and how we get out of going there, and where we would go and what we would do when we didn ' t have to go there (and get out of going there) anymore. And we wondered, what is to become of us? Graduation from Groveton is viewed with happiness and relief, but with a good measure of fear, too. We are nervous. Our futures are breathing down our necks, and we suspect they have halitosis. Most of us will . . . go to college and get jobs, but . . . Some of us will . . . host talkshows, drink wine out of liottles in paper bags, lose our hair, gain confidence, sell ginseng on street corners, move to South Dakota, sleep late, dance for a living, have triplets, marry well and live in Monaco, hotwire hearses, vote Republican, go fishing, die young bake pretzels, cut grass, play Scrabble, sell vacuum cleaners, use vacuum cleaners, take shorthand, buy ostentatious things and leave them lying around, change haircolors, burn our bridges, play bingo every other Saturday night, take liberties, wash windows, write dirty books, attract magnates, count our chickens before they are hatched, ski the Andes, chew tobacco, meet Debby Boone but forget who she was, sail around the world, get ulcers, eat quiche, name our sons Elvis, develop ring around the collar, read four newspapers a day, smoke too much, deny things we know to be true, memorize Shakespeare, help ourselves, subvert the government, design doggie sweaters, cultivate houseplants, cry over spilt milk, find life on Mars, call our best friends collect from France and talk for an hour, bet the horse races, lead Brownie troops, beg forgiveness, remember Groveton High School, and smile. 146 147 FORENSICS: Bottom row; Karen Falk, Melba Watkins, KatFiy McKinley.
