Virginia 3 4 5 6 • -r . 7 wL iTV 8 9 Homecoming Week began on Tuesday, November 14, Hick Day, with overalls, straw hats, and nominations for the Homecoming Court. Students and teachers got into the festive spirit by wearing outlandish clothes. Daisy Mae skirts and plaid shirts then gave way to calf-length circle skirts, round-collar blouses, and tee-shirts for Wednesday ' s costumes; ponytails and D.A. ' s topped the 50 ' s day look. On Thursday, an aura of magic was felt as ghouls, witches, fairies and Little-Bo-Peeps came out for Fantasy Day. Friday, everyone turned out in school colors to show spirit on Black and Gold Day. The Court was now official and the choosing of the Queen began. Votes were cast during Homeroom and counted that afternoon; the result would be announced at half time of the football game. A large crowd turned out to watch Groveton play Jefferson; half time showed a score of 7-0, and the parade of floats and princesses began. For the first time, the floats had a cohesive theme. Fantasy, that did not pertain primarily to the ball game. First prize went to the Junior Class ' s rendition of Mother Goose. The band and Drill Team circled the Court while Mr. Ross crowned Cindy Slater, escorted by David Markewitcz. The game recommenced; although Jefferson won by a score of 14-7 the fans saw an exciting game. Saturday night saw a dance sponsored by the Senior Class. There was a large turnout; the two bands were enjoyed by all who attended. It was thus over for another year; the week of make-believe, hasty building and anxious waiting ended on a pleasant note. 10 Last January, thanks to VICA, Groveton students were given an opportunity to put their ideals of helping others into practice in a unique way. The representatives of the Red Cross who came to the school were not in search of either money or volunteer time, neither of which are possessed in large quantities by most students, but rather blood. Any good biology student knows that anyone who is eligible to give has enough blood so that he will hardly miss the few corpuscles asked of him. Still, many Groveton students were reluctant to give to the bloodmobile. It seems that the average student ' s fun¬ damental desire to do good was opposed by his fun¬ damental fear of being pricked. Still a large propor- of the student body lay down on the table to give blood. The practical result was to help save lives, a fact which seemed to deal a crowning blow to those philosophers at Groveton and elsewhere who are so vocal in reviling the idealism of youth. 12 13 k M +r T 1 %e ' J 1 THE NEW GROVETON TO BE OR NOT TO BE After eight years of promises, it appears that the School Board is finally going to give Groveton a new school. Building plans are ambitious, and the campus will be very different than the present one. The moving date, however, is not cer¬ tain, and there are a number of problems which must be dealt with before the building is occupied. The Bryant lot will include three separate buildings. One will house the Dramatic Arts, Musical Arts and Art Studies departments. Physical education, including a new gym and Vocational education will be housed in the old Bryant building along with administration offices. The third building will in¬ clude two subschools, academic studies, and a large media center. The cafeteria will be in the third building, and will serve to bring academic, artistic and vocational students together. Throughout the history of the new Groveton, comple¬ tion deadlines have been constantly pushed back. This year, however, it appears that the date of September, 1 976, may be moved up to January. In this case, the move would be made during the middle of the next school year. The actual comple¬ tion date is unknown to anyone, and will largely depend on the condition of the housing industry; whether or not there are extra workers to devote to the project. Principal Ross hopes that the move will not have to be made until September because a mid-year move would add to the problems of going to the new building. Such a move would involve a massive shift of file cabinets, audio-visual equipment, textbooks and other materials in a short time. In addition, the confusion of a first day in school with new bus routes and classroom assignments would ensue. Even if the move occurs during the summer, however, there will be problems. One of the two theatres being planned has no seats, and they may not even be installed until a year after the students move in. There are no girls ' restrooms at this time, a problem that must be solved unless the school is to be part of a bold social experiment. Most importantly, the mode of education at the new Groveton is as yet ill-defined. There will be movable partitions rather than permanent walls, but the extent to which students will be involved in open classrooms has not been determined. Decisions as to the course of education at the new building must be made before it is ready for use. The effects of the new school on the students is not yet known. There is, however, the chance for a better place to learn. This is what Groveton has been asking for for so long, and this is what Groveton is going to receive, sooner or later. Although it is much disparaged today, the practice of pursuing definite, tangible goals is commendable. Whether the goal is to run 1 00 yards in a certain amount of time, receive an A in a class, or win an award being offered by someone, it is a challenge, and the achievement of it is an accomplishment. Much of the rhetoric about seeking in¬ dividual growth rather than pursuing artificial goals is merely a device to hide an unwillingness to attempt anything challenging. Everyone pursues goals, and most pursuits go unnoticed, but there are some ac¬ complishments that stand out as the most important. These ac¬ complishments are acknowledged in this section. 18 National Honor Society— ROW ONE Ayn McClendon; Ed Laatsch; Carla Dutzman; Chris West; Sharon Coulter; Lisa Cherkasky; Dolly Holmes; Margit Erdman; Alissa Bond; Scott Keller, Kirk Beckhorn; Rena Gatewood ROW TWO Karen Knighton; Nancy Odom; Jon Lauthers; Cindy Valentine; Jan Murphy; Teresa Kurtz; Debbie Thornton; Linda Cromley; Anne Marshall; Larry Ball; Melinda Kitchell; Fritz Kriete ROWTHREE Terry Kronstedt; Rob Perry; Helen Long; Brendan O ' Hara; Debbie Kulp; Karen Spinks, Michelle Conner- ton; Debbie Scott; Mike Spragins; Bill Lemon; Charles Franzen. It is for that reason that organized sports are vitally important. More than anything else, they serve to bind the school together. People came together to cheer at football and basketball games who might never voluntarily appear together otherwise. Sports serve as a focal point for school spirit, a minimum of which is necessary to prevent the breakdown of all school functions. Everyone can iden¬ tify with the school teams, and therefore indirectly with everyone else. Certainly yelling at games is not a panacea for all of a school ' s problems—students must make real sacrifices to achieve complete harmony—but at least it is a start. 39 40 42 44 45 Alas! There is no place today for traditionalism. Groveton ' s treasured reputation as a school whose athletic endeavors are predestined for less than the top is being challenged by Sherry James, a senior here and a national track star. Her series of achievements includes a world ' s record and she is setting her sights on the 1976 Olympics. Sherry began her career only five years ago at Bryant Intermediate School. She was a suc¬ cessful athlete there, and at Groverton the next year, but it was not until the summer of 1 972 that she achieved national recognition by placing se¬ cond in the 440 in the U.S. Youth Games. In her Sophomore year. Sherry set a state record for the 440 as a member of the Groveton girl ' s track team. In her junior year, she helped set two American records in relays. As a senior, she has participated in numerous Amateur Athletic Union meets with the Sports International Track Team, Washington D.C. Her biggest accomplish¬ ment this year has been running on the relay team that broke the world record for the 880 sprint medley. It is not known what Sherry ' s next achieve¬ ment will be, but it is certain that she will con¬ tinue to be at the very top of her sport. Her plans at this time emphasize the upcoming Pan American Games and then the Olympics. Only a handful of schools in the nation can boast of a student with comparable prospects. 46 47 Swim Team —left to right Mike Roscoe; Robert Hartung; Alan Larkins. Matt Klunder, Bill Dan. These groups have decorated and filled with candy the lockers of the school’s athletes, covered the walls of the school with black and gold paper, and cheered with abandon at sports events. In addition, they have beguiled spectators during many a halftime with stunning or cute routines. A brand new building and thousands of dollars for athletic equipment can help, but good teachers are needed if good education is going to take place. Groveton has more than ade¬ quately fulfilled this requisite. Our teachers, in their implementa¬ tion of educational theories and philosophies, have experience backing them. The flexible system which both teacher and student participates, requires sagacity, patience, and understanding on both sides to flow as well as it does at Groveton. 118 Principal — Mr, Ross 119 Administration —Mr Price; Mr. Stagi 120 Human Relations— Mrs Garrett 121 School Nurse Debbie Metzger Student Activities Director— Mr Frazee 122 Guidance Department —SEATED Mr Woodard. Certainly moderate doses of English, Mathematics, History, and Science have a place in every student ' s education. There is also, however, a need for something less abstract, something more easily applicable to their future. Vocational Education is designed to provide that needed element. It makes high school a more valuable period in the life of its students. They have the option of learning a skill, and these skills vary from teaching small children to acquiring an electrician ' s techniques. Through this program, students have a chance to learn the skills and demands of their intended careers. 134 Practical Arts — Ms. Simmons: Mrs Tibbs I I i I I I 135 Practical Arts —Mr. Blackburn; Mrs Mason Practical Arts -Mr. Braden ment Chairman; Mr Tolley. What are our emotions? Confusion? Bewilderment? We all experience these feelings as freshmen trying to make our way through a maze of new situations. We watch the others, all older and wiser than we. It is they who create the heartbeat of the school, and at first we are only observers as they join themselves together into a vibrant force. Then we feel the heartbeat ourselves. It pulses about us, forcing us into its rhythm. Finally, we are a part of it. We are still freshmen, but we are full members of the school. im ’ %li i!V 3ft . 144 -a . Before we know it, we have to decide what the theme of our Homecoming float will be. Alice in Wonderland—a great idea. Well, second place isn ' t that bad. They say all good things must come to an end (I bet a teacher made that up), and sophomores are eventually faced with the terri¬ ble task of buckling down to work. English essay due on Thursday, Math test on Friday, do your biology questions over the weekend. It ' s a wonder we survived our freshman year! Well, at least we aren ' t freshmen taking abuse from the upperclassmen anymore. No sir, now we ' re the abusers. So look on the bright side. The class of ' 77 will survive the next two years and maybe (if we ' re lucky) our teachers won ' t. 164 I Katherine Millis. sophomore class President 165 166 167 Joe Albritton Christine Alderman Greg Alexiou Tommy Allen Tina Alvarado Barbie Anderson Tino Arama Patti Arcaro Mike Ayala Tim Ballard Christian Bartholomew Barbara Bashline Julie Basile Christine Blake Tricia Boege Austin Bolling Robert Bowders 168 SOPHOMORE Mark Brady Chris Brown Deniece Brown Russell Brown Mike Byrne Alison Carper Eric Carper Dawne Carroll Shantey Chase Hall Cheshire Abby Childs Avone Chisley SOPHOMORE 169 Janice Conley John Connor Matt Converse Kevin Corbett James Cotton Lynn Courtney Debbie Craft Dorothy Crecraft Mary Crockett Teri Davis Teresa Decker Fereol De Gastyne Carla DelaPava Michele DeWoody Lee Dickey Jeff Dickinson Diane Dieter Charles Downhem Diane Drake 170 SOPHOMORE Maryanne Gallagher Cindy Galzerano Jane Garlick Anne Gehron Mike Fallon Jeff Fells Sharon English Jerry Enos Melvin Enwisle Brenda Evans Lisa Fingeret Judy Fisher Patti Fogarty Debi Fogle Stuart Frakes Dave Frankovic James Freeman Nancy Frinks Jeff Dunn Celine Dutzman Britt Ellis SOPHOMORE 171 Jere Gill Eddie Glaze Steve Glazier Patricia Green Travis Hackney Danny Harris Patty Hawes Brenda Helmick Mike Herrman Denise Hicks Gary Hicks Lisa Hicks Barbara Higgason Wayne Higgason 172 SOPHOMORE Barbara Joebstl Donald Jones Cynthia Johnson Robin Johnson Lauren Hoffert Beverly Honoi Jimmy Hill Teresa Jenkins Connie Jeffrey Charlene Jeffries Cindy Jewell Steve Johnson Nippy Kane Sharon Kerns Lina Hoverter Joann Huntzinger Sally Irwin Karen Jacobs Melinda Jackson Vicki Jennings SOPHOMORE 173 Susan Kinnear Jane Klingensmith Nels Kloster Erika Klutz Brian Knighton Karen Krueger Kevin Krause Susan Larson Diana Leal William Ledbetter Dong Sou Lee Karl Leigh Cheryl Leitzsey Therese Lester Karl Kurtz Karen Larkins Lynn Larson Denise Kolas Stuart Kollmorgen Nancy Kovak Steve Kovak Jk 174 SOPHOMORE Hartlie Maddox Noelle Madison Cathy Marcinkus Kelly Marrs Beth Marsh Jesse Martin Roxann Maske Debi Mason Chris Mathis Steve McCulloch Pam McDaney Elizabeth McLean Chris McNeal Richard McNeil Daniel Levenson Jim Levy Lois Lusk Larry McSwain Bob Merkli John Michael Bill Miller SOPHOMORE 17B Debi Millis Chuck Mitchell Steve Mohr Charles Muck Carl Mullins Mark Myatt Louise Neidle Beverly Nesbit Russell Nessalradt Theresa Noble Mary O ' Hara Jenny Orleans Candy Osborn William Owens 176 SOPHOMORE { 4 Franklin Payne Barry Peatross Nancy Peek Barbara Perry Katie Pfeiffer Pam Pitkin Fred Plumb Tom Powers Carlton Preston Lisa Pritchard Gary Proffit Gina Pugh George Purvis Mike Redding Mike Reign Debbie Rich Tim Rickman SOPHOMORE 177 Anna Robey John Robinson Lisa Rodericks David Rutherford Linda Ryan Crystal Sanford Don Sellman Ken Semidy John Shane Donald Stewart Lise Straka 178 SOPHOMORE Eddie Strong Renee Stuart Siles Stuart Julie Studds David Swett Ten Sylvest Marlene Teets Marillyn Tefft Malcolm Towle Raymond Tripp Glenn Sherman Larry Shifflett SOPHOMORE 179 Lisa Shorten Jeff Silverman Eugene Skinner Pat Skouran James Small Brenda Smith Dorthy Smith Janice Smith Kathy Smith Mary Smith Russel Smith John Smoot Lisa Spedden Doris Spinks Greg Stamps Doug Stearman Mike Steam Scott Stevens Debbie Stevenson Beth Tull Kim Turner Shirley Turner Mi chael Vacca Carol Van Vlandron Mike Vaughn Steve Viar Farley Vicenti Matt Vinsh Eugene Walker 180 SOPHOMORE Tomara Walker Mark Walters Edwin Waters Ann Welch Julie Welch Donna Welker Bob Werner Brion West Byron Weston Devon Westphal Emily Whichord Elizabeth White Mark White Billy Whithurst Lois Will Ester Williams George Williams Kathy Williams Kenny Williams Ozella Williams Tina Williams Liz Wineland Lori Wisyanski Berry Woody Mark Woznak SOPHOMORE 181 Junior Class Officers — LEFT TO RIGHT Karen Alcorn, Secretary Libby Palmer, Treasurer, David Glazier. Vice-President; Charlie Harris President i JUNIOR Ever since our Freshman year, we Juniors have been criticized, chastized, and underestimated. A disgrace , a discredit , the worst to ever hit Groveton , said members of other classes. Some of these ac¬ cusations have a base in truth, but most are largely false. Our class has its share of misfits and bottom-of-the barrel-ers . All classes do. But these few are far overshadowed by the many members of our class who have done so much for themselves and the name of the school. Academic achievers, community workers, and participants in extra¬ curricular activities have always been plentiful among us. And yes, we have our share of jocks, too. But more important is the spirit that our class exhibits. Few groups have cared as much about the well-being of their school. Some might call us trouble-makers, but we possess within ourselves the belief that our school can be a better place in which to learn. Nothing is perfect, but we are working towards a school that can be called much better than most. In one year Groveton will have seen the last of our class. When we leave, the school will lose a class brimming with personality and character. 183 184 Marshall Ashby John Ashworth Debbie Ayala Paul Balik Larry Ball David Balia Derrick Barber Jeffery Barnes JUNIORS 185 Seth Berg llluminado Berrios Mathew Berry Jose Bervete David Blake Margy Blake Barbara Butler Dena Cain Donna Cains Bill Calhoun Tim Carper Joni Carroll Ronnie Carter Terry Carter Joe Cataldo 186 JUNIORS Chris Cooper Barnard Corbett Bill Crawford Paul Cross Bill Dam Rachel Daniels Linda Choi Yong Chong Hyang Chong Marc Chytilo Karen Clark Jay Clifford Patricia Clover Michael Cook Connie Cooke Sarah Chappell Tony Cheng Jai Cho JUNIORS 187 Vmcena Dean Man Dearborn v ' V ■ ' ' ■ v S I v A vs Richard Ellis Andy Ehrlich Barbara Eubanks Sandy Daniels Brad Davis Jim Davis Tom Denty Richard Detweiler Iva Dolezalek Maureen Donohoe Kathleen Dore Kathy Dotterrer Carla Dutzman Charles Eastwood Mark Eisenstein 188 JUNIORS Randy Everett Debbie Fahnestock Debbie Fairbanks Kathy Fallon Valerie Ferguson Janet Figard Matt Fletcher Susan Fortney Jayne Foster David Franzen Nicky Freeman Buddy Fricke Joyce Gallagher Walter Gallahan Kendall Gallivan Cindi Galownia Susan Garafola Robert Franca Payne Franklin JUNIORS 189 Patty Gibbons Jeff Givens Steve Glass David Glazier Leslie Goodman Garth Gordan Bob Greene Don Hackney Jim Hamrin Robert Hankins 190 JUNIORS Teresa Hendrickson Jennie Herman Keith Houston Dean Hoverter Eleanor Huang Anna Huntzinger Chris Hansen Camilla Hardter David Harlow Doug Hickey Mary Hill Brian Hoffert Charles Harris Fred Hartung Jill Hatcher Kendall Hayes Bonita Holder Olivia Holmes Edward Honor JUNIORS 191 Jerry Kilpatrick Linda Knight Mark Kopasz Teresa Kronstedt Laura Lacy Stephen Lafley Kathy Hurley Julie Ipsen Rachel Jackson Roseann Janssen Doris Jewell Earle Johnson Lauri Keck Scott Keller James Johnson Stacey Johnson Robert Jones 192 JUNIORS Steve Landi Paul Lawrence Tabey Lewis Jeff McCulloch Terri McDonald Jan McNeal Wayne McVicker Robert Mechling Randy Medina Andy Mark Frances Marshall Ellen Massey Scott Mayer Joe Meagher Bob Mebane Caroline Lieber Sherree Madsen JUNIORS 193 Sandra Meeks Maurice Meiskey Lindy Mercer-Daly Dennis Milam Jeffery Miller Mike Minix Shelley Mitchell Bruce Molzan Shirley Moody Roger Moore Greg Morris Shug Morrow Ann Murphy Reatha Murphy Donna Neitzey Greg O ' Connor Barbara O ' Neil 194 JUNIORS Bobby Permenter David Phares Susan Poole Mary Powell Mike Powell Jennifer Price Hania Richmond Billy Ricketts Doug Padgett Libby Palmer Glenn Pavone Tim Price Gloria Quintero Debra Rager Glenda Richards Dennis Ratcliffe Leslie Richie JUNIORS 195 , V; W mail ms 4 A •? _ v in ii j m ' 9 u car 4i cst -«- . In lieu of being philosophical and wondering whether graduation is a beginning or an end, we have decided to list some of these lessons in order to spare future classes the pain and agony of discovering them for themselves .... 1. Speak glowingly of those above you and heed their ad¬ vice—even if they be turkeys. 2. Don ' t lend money and expect it to be returned. When someone says May I borrow he means May I have . 3. Don ' t leave cafeteria trays unattended. Some Groveton students work their way through college on tray deposits. 4. When someone says High to you don ' t say Yes . 5. When you see a faculty member looking for someone, ask him if he lost his crayons. 6. Having a substitute means having a free class. 7. And finally, don ' t forget to show your school spirit by saving the grass from your easter basket to fill in the bald spots on the football field. We have a new President and Vice-President (not elected in a general election), a surprisingly reform- minded Congress, and an unparalleled economic situation for them all to deal with. 1973 saw the second resignation and firsl criminal conviction of a Vice-President in history. 1 974 was even more historically important, for il saw the downfall of a President and the succes¬ sion to the Presidency of a man directly responsi¬ ble only to the voters of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Moreover, the leadership of Gerald Ford was challenged by a heavily Democratic Congress. This was the Congress which expressed the wishes of the people after two years ol Watergate, which seemed to confirm doubts as to the motives of those in government. Once a haven for out-of-touch party hacks, Capitol Hill became a place where leaders were quickly dis¬ missed if they seemed unresponsive. The full- scale revolution, caused largely by the ' 75 new Democratic Representatives, was un¬ precedented. While the government was busy reforming itself, the economic situation in the country was deteriorating. The symptoms of both an overheated and a sluggish economy—inflation and unemployment, respectively—were felt al Former President Richard Nixon the same time. With the Standard of living ol Americans falling off, some predicted a new depression. The government ' s response to these problems is still to be seen. America was faced with major crises in 1974 and 1975, but she has been faced with such crises in the past. There is every indication, however, that America will be able to come together, put recent political history behind her, and solve the problems facing her people. There are pros and cons of the question of the value of television viewing, but neither side can deny the way in which it has influenced our lives. The Golden-Age of radio has been followed by the Golden-Age of television. The majority of high school students spend between two and three hours per day watching the boob-tube. Social scientists have even gone as far as to suggest that a majority of our social ills can be directly traced to the T.V. Children grow up more quickly nowadays, and become aware of the world at a much earlier age then in years past. Whether your opinion of television is good, bad or indifferent, you must admit that the small box in your living room is an important fixture and will continue to be one for many years to come. As in the case of television, the motion picture industry has its adversaries and its allies. However, unlike television, its Golden- Age is long gone. This does not mean, however, that its influence on us has loosened. Far from it. Although going to the movies is no longer a weekly ritual with most families, the industry ' s usefulness as a conversation stimulator cannot be overlooked. Few people have not seen The Godfather or Blazing Saddles , and fewer still would pass up the op¬ portunity to discuss them. Books, on the other hand, have few adversaries. A well-read person can broaden his horizons greatly without ever leaving his home. The trauma of life in a Siberian prison camp could be felt merely by delving into the best selling Gulag Archeppelao, bringing ex¬ periences from another part of the world into our laps. Can we change the world? It ' s possible, but we must first examine those elements which greatly influence our lives. Understan¬ ding the impact of the media helps us to better see ourselves. Students were attracted for different reasons; some because a big name was coming to town, some because they genuinely appreciated the music, and still others because they knew it was going to be the biggest par¬ ty around. Whatever the reasons, Grovetonites were among the students who came in hordes to see such names as Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and Elton John. They pulled into the parking lot and piled out of smoked-filled cars, stretching cramped limbs and screaming with glee. Whatever their different interests—the selection of Groveton students was surprisingly varied—they poured into the building with one purpose—to celebrate. And as the music resounded through the vast building, celebrate they did. In the District of Columbia, numerous Groveton students enjoyed many a fine bluegrass or jazz show. D.A.R. Constitution Hall, having conceded its place as the number one concert hall in the area to the Capital Centre, drew many less well-known but remarkably talented shows. While the crowds were smaller, the merry-making was every bit as in¬ tense. There, as at the Baltimore Civic Center, Cole Field House, and the Capital Centre, it was clear that concerts were a major interest of Groveton students. 247 248 As they have for years, Groveton students in 1974-75 obeyed the current fads and fashions in clothing. Judicious moderation was the theme in skirts, as the midi became popular. Continuing to follow national fashion trends, numerous female students attempted the dangerous feat of balancing precariously on top of enor¬ mous platform shoes. Students were rustic in overalls, bundled in scarves and jewelry. Hair, belonging to both guys and girls, was cut shorter and molded into waves, cornrow and curls. True devotees, however, were few — jeans and long hair were still plentiful. i 249 MEN VS. Because of its nearness to the nation ' s capitol, the Alexandria area is exposed to much not felt elsewhere. Offerings of D. C. range from contemplating great works of art, to reviewing Government officials on trial, to rooting for a winning professional football team. The Washington Suburbs draw to them diplomats, politicians and military leaders. A midwesterner reading about famous senators or congressmen is impressed by their titles. As we read, or watch firsthand, the same news, we know that behind these titles are only men. They live just around the corner, just down the road. It is their offspring who comprise our classmates. The unique conglomeration of opinions and lifestyles observable to Grovetonites affects our thinking and viewpoints, giving us an exposure not always enjoyed by Americans. 252 Webster ' s rather illustriously defines socialize as: to make fit for living and getting along in a group; make social. Groveton rather gregariously defines socialize as: to make fit for a party. This is not to say that a party life is the right kind of life for a high school student, but it sure isn ' t bad for whoever can pull if off — and quite a few people have. We do, of course, need that convincing group of students who can show the faculty just cause to call G.H.S. an institution of upper lear¬ ning. The student body here at Groveton is extremely diverse, which is typical. The students here find an incredible array of things to do with their social time, which is also typical. I wonder how I wound up with this assignment, also typical. I guess I wasn ' t thinking when I said yes or something or maybe I just didn ' t want to see a copy editor cry in public. I will probably receive grief from sections of the student body about being misrepresented, and God knows we have some sweet student bodies. To them I say bite the bullet, or write the article yourself next year. I have found that some students spend their time profitably and others do not. Quite a few people work either after school, at night, or on the weekend. Some people who don ' t work wish they did, and quite a few who do wish they didn ' t. Some groups of students stay around the school after 2:10 for groups, clubs, sports, organizations, or assistance. Others, God help them, just stay around the school. A major bulk of the students leave the building promptly at 2:10 by what ever means they can lay their hands on — cars, buses, bikes, feet, hands and knees, wheelchairs, etc . The most common social activities at Groveton include something as follows: hanging out in groups of five or six while complaining about how ' ' nothing ever happens around here ; an ignorant and terribly overworked expression. Others spend long hours rebuilding their cars to a tee so that they can have a few hours of fun driving their work into the ground on the major drags. Some spend their time playing cards so much that a permanent deformation has occurred between the thumb and index fingers. Some spend evenings at the library shooting the breeze (and sometimes working). Some spend their time driving down Elba Road or Sherwood Hall Lane. Some people spend their time painting things (like cannons, stadiums, and windows). A lot of people waste a lot of time and gas on weekends trying to locate parties, not realizing that everyone else is doing the same thing. Some people go on ski trips and do everything but ski. Some com¬ mon hobbies are tennis, volleyball, basketball, football, chess and sex. Sex is the most common but often the least re¬ warding pastime at Groveton. Bowling and ice skating are other hobbies pursued. The week nights are generally all but dead. On Friday and Saturday nights, basketball and football games are a common attraction, after which Gino ' s and the Diplomat are descended upon with numbers rarely rivaled by anything short of a good fire. The party is perhaps the single most important social activity around. It is more of an obsession than a motivation. When somebody announces a party, everybody in the school knows about it in less than 15 minutes and they all come. The host or hostess turns pale as his life passes before his eyes, watching in horror while 350 people try to cram their way into his three bedroom two and a half bath, split-level colonial house. Soon the police arrive and I boogie on out to my car and head ' em on home not stopping for anything. Occasional¬ ly there are much calmer, even invitational parties going on. These are given by the more privileged among us and take perhaps half an hour to turn into open house parties. The cliques or groups are another important social fac¬ tor. These are constantly changing and intermixing for the simple reason that people get sick of seeing the same people 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. All social entertainment reaching one in the group reaches all, and everything they do is done in numbers. Social life at Groveton is as diverse as the people. What they do is limited by their mental and physical capabilities and sometimes, and only sometimes, by state and federal laws. Ed Laatsch 254 : When you left, I felt a hollow so there. It left me breathless. 255 ACTIVITIES Administration Afro-American Club 1 1 3 Art Awards 22 Band 91 Baseball—Varsity 75 Junior Varsity 74 Basketball—Varsity 67 Freshman 69 Junior Varsity 68 Business Department 131 Cafeteria 138 Cheerleaders—Varsity 58 Freshman 61 Junior Varsity 60 Chess Club Chorus Awards 28 Children ' s Theater 92 Christian Fellowship 114 CLASSES 47 Cross Country 64 Credits 232 Custodians 139 Debate Team 100 Distributive Education Awards 31 Distributive Educ a t i 0 n Club 108 Drill Team 55 English Department 126 Executive Council 105 Faculty Directory 231 Fine Arts Department 132 Football — Varsity 49 Freshman 50 Junior Varsity 52 Foreign Language Department 129 French Club 97 French Honor Society 29 Freshman Class Class Officers 145 Future Homemakers of America 103 Groveton Action to Stop Pollution 106 German Club 97 Girls ' Chorus 95 Girls ' Sports Varsity Basketball 71 Junior Varsity 70 Basketball 53 Gymnastics 62 Junior Varsity Hockey 63 Varsity Softball 77 Junior Varsity Softball 77 Tennis 72 Golf Team 76 Groveton Singers 94 Guidance Department 123 Homecoming Court 21 Human Relations 121 International Relations Club 101 It ' s Academic Team 24 Junior Class 182 Officers 182 Key Club 1 07 Keyette Club 107 Librarians 128 Math Department 124 Math Team 98 New Groveton 14 National Honor Society 19 Oneirata 8 Physical Education Department 14 Pep Club 5 Puppet Theatre 9 Science Department 12 Secretaries 13 Senior Class 20 Directory 23 i Class Officers 20: Superlatives 3 , Soccer 7 ; Social Studies Department 12 Sophomore Class 16 ' Class Officers 16!
