IT SERVES A COMMUNITY THAT IS NOT COMMUNITY. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT EMBRACES MANY COMMUNITIES-EACH WITH ITS OWN IDENTITY, RANGING FROM THE VERY AFFLUENT TO THE LESS AFFLUENT. MORE LIKE A SALAD BOWL THAN A MELTING POT, EACH ELEMENT MAINTAINS ITS IDENTITY, YET ENRICHES THE QUALITY OF THE WHOLE. WHILE GROVE- TON IS THE SMALLEST HIGH SCHOOL IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, IT IS PROBABLY THE MOST DIVERSE-AND YET SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND RACIAL FRAGMENTATION IS MINIMAL. LINES ARE CROSSED AND THE INEVITABLE SCHOOL CLIQUES USUALLY CONTAIN PERSONS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE EM¬ PHASIS SEEMS TO BE WHAT YOU ARE RATHER THAN WHO YOU ARE. BUT GROVETON IS ALSO TYPICAL. IT IS, IN FACT, A MINI-AMERICA. ITS VERY DIVERSITY, TO SOME DE¬ GREE, REFLECTS THE HETEROGENEOUS COMPOSITY OF THE NATION—THOUGH PERHAPS NOT IN THE SAME PROPORTIONS. LIKE THE NATION, GROVETON HAS PASSED THROUGH MANY MOODS IN RE¬ CENT YEARS. AS LONG HAIR AND THE POOR LOOK BECAME CAMP, AND PROTEST BECAME CHIC ON TELEVISION SO THE BIZARRE APPEARED TO BE THE NORM AT GROVETON. BUT ALL OF THIS HAS PASSED-AND LEFT A RESIDUE. AS A QUIET HAS SETTLED OVER THE COUNTRY AND THE CAMPUS, THE RECENT EXPERIENCE HAS ALTERED OUR BEHAVIOR—FOR BETTER OR WORSE, DEPENDING ON YOUR AGE AND POINT OF VIEW. THE DRESS CODES WHICH AT ONE TIME IMPOSED STANDARDS OF CONFORMITY REFLECTING THE TASTE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT HAVE BEEN RE¬ PLACED BY A LAISSEZ FAIRE ATTITUDE ALLOWING TASTE TO FALL WHERE IT MAY. LONG HAIR AND PEACH FUZZ ARE STILL WITH US, BUT A BATHLESS REVOLUTIONARY DOES NOT LURK BEHIND IT. THE AGE OF ROCK HAS SOMEWHAT RESHAPED OUR LANGUAGE. TO BE RIPPED OFF MEANS TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. TO RAP MEANS TO TALK OR DISCUSS. A FREAK IS-SOMEONE WHO IS UNUSUAL IN A NEGATIVE SENSE, A MISFIT; WHILE TO FREAK OUT IS TO BE INEBRIATED OR STONED ON MARIJUANA OR SOME OTHER DRUG. TO BE UP TIGHT MEANS TO BE TENSE. TO BE HEAVEY OR SOLID MEANS TO BE SERIOUS OR PROFOUND. TO SOME EXTENT THE PROFESSED IDEALISM OF YOUTH HAS FOUND EXPRESSION IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULA. FREEDOM OF CHOICE IS ENCOURAGED BY OFFERING A FLEXIBLE PROGRAM REPLACING THE RIGID FULL YEAR COURSE WITH DIVERSE NINE WEEK COURSES. THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ALONE OFFERS MORE THAN 60 COURSES-INCLUDING A COMMUNTIY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM- WITH A FACULTY OF ONLY SIXTEEN. THE SOCIAL STUDIES AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS WITH SMALLER FACULTIES FOLLOW THE SAME PATTERN. EARLY RELEASE PROGRAMS, VOCATIONAL TRADE COURSES, AND VOCATIONAL COUNSELING SERVES THE NEEDS OF WORKING STUDENTS. TRAINING STUDENTS TO WORK WITH PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN AND PROVIDING THE COMMUNITY WITH A NURSERY SCHOOL WAS INNOVATED BY THE HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT. A PASS-FAIL OPTION HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE CHOICES A STUDENT IS FREE TO MAKE IN COURSES TAKEN FOR ELECTIVE CREDIT. RULES PROHIBITING SMOKING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS HAVE BEEN RE¬ LAXED. STUDENT RIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES, ONCE DEFINED BY THE WHIM OF SCHOOL HIER¬ ARCHIES, HAVE BEEN CLEARLY CODIFIED AND PUBLISHED. THE STUDENT-GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN REORGANIZED TO BETTER REPRESENT THE VARIOUS COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. AN AREA ADVISORY COUNCIL WAS CREATED TO ENCOURAGE STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN HIGH AD¬ MINISTRATIVE DECISIONS. A STUDENT SITS ON THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. YET GROVETON HIGH SCHOOL IS WHAT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN. WE STILL PRODUCE OUR ACADEMI¬ CALLY TALENTED, OUR HOMECOMING QUEENS, OUR BAND AND CHORUSES, OUR CHEERLEADERS, OUR DRAMATIC AND FINE ARTISTS, OUR SERVICE CLUBS, OUR COMPETITIVE TEAMS. WE ARE STILL A PLACE WHERE GENERATIONS INTERACT TO AFFECT CHANGES IN EACH OTHER. HOMECOMING 73 74 UNSUNG HEROES With the unfolding of fall, many tackle the joys and sorrows of athletics. Greeting sports with some apprehension, en- tusiasm and confidence soon spread among those players who make it. A fresh start, a second chance: each promises that this year can be different. Brothers in sport, the individ¬ uals grit their teeth and prepare for the work, the weariness, and hopefully, the wins. Season Supermen briefly taste fame as the fickle spot—light of the crowds find them. But what of those who bear the burdens, and are rarely no¬ ticed? As in most other areas of life the average man goes unheralded in the annals of sports, even though without him, no team could exist. Striving and sweating under the shadow of the superstar, the average athlete has no trophies to boast of his years in sports, and no fans, for even the benchers look to higher heroes to worship. Memories alone survive to be recalled in later years. What motivates him, why does he continue to sweat, to reach for a higher level that many not be within his physical prowess to attain? Is it a natural human desire to seek glory and recognition? Is it a daydream hope for a chance to one day swish that clinch¬ ing basket, score that last-minute goal, slug that grand slam for the championship? Or could the greatest motivation be the pure and simple love for the game? Perhaps this is the ultimate ingredient for true success. Success among others, or that personal success, which means the most. 75 S.E.E.K. Zen—Buddhism, karate, gourmet cooking, anthropology ... all within the walls of Croveton High School. But the excitement didn ' t stop there. A multitude of such courses were available on January 29 and 30, all a part of Student Effort to Expand Knowledge. There was a care¬ ful tiptoe through the halls as SEEK people waited to see the results of all their back-breaking weeks of organizing. In one room you might have found a large number of students with blankets and pillows—not sleeping—but meditating. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to witness a karate demonstration with a little fencing or ping-pong on the side. At another end of the school you might have discovered one of the male English teachers doing his thing—cooking gourmet food. If you are of the more creative sort, you could have designed anything from candles to macrame to a kan-kan (anyone can). When noontime rolled around, you ' d be eating the normal cafeteria cui¬ sine, but would have an hour in which to do it. And there was music to eat lunch to, provided by a live band. On the more intellectual side of the day, there were classes in psychology, jour¬ nalism, rock and jazz appreciation, archaeology, computers, and quite a bit more. Noted news¬ paper columnists and authors made appearances, and students also got a taste of teaching with their own designed courses. Due to the enormous variety of courses, literally everyone was able to latch onto at least an hour of good education. The hardest part was deciding on only twelve choices. If you like movies (or just needed a rest) those were available. Then, if you just wanted to get away from it all for a day, your possibilities were endless: the zoo, Kennedy Cen¬ ter, D.C. Courts . . . After the flour was swept away from the bread—baking class and the podium carted out of a political seminar, most people faced the routine schedule with a hint of pessimism. However, because of the elective system in English, history, and physical education, a more conservative type of SEEK was still to be found in our everyday courses. Even though the courses were endless, the success of SEEK was doubtful in some eyes. In an evaluation in the TIGER RAG: Mrs. Torrice said, “A few students have told me that they got alot out of SEEK. And the field trips were excellent ... However, the negative aspects of SEEK out¬ weighed the positive aspects, and she summed up her feelings by saying, We shall not have another SEEK until students realize their responsibilities and seem ready to participate fully in the program. Although SEEK will probably not be returning in the near future, there ' s no denying that it af¬ fected us because the spirit of SEEK is alive and well and living in Groveton ' s classrooms. And, of course, there still lingers the scent of Chinese cookery and the echo of poetry. 76 v.y .■ ' - v . It consists of individual letters, all in¬ nocent and well-meaning. Jumbled together, they form a coalition to literally wipe out the original purpose. In other words, one never knows how the other guy is going to interpret ones writing. Whether obvious or not, the basic communicative passages are bound to be handled differently by different people. It ' s unpredictable. It ' s self—destructive. It ' s necessary. Some have the intention of creating orderly representation of the school ' s events. Lists of games. Achievement records. Quantitive editorials. But what are the most important events? Does one want to simply report the bare facts? Does one attempt to shade it to fit the mold of the school? Or quit? Journalism is obviously more than this. Objectivity is a difficult thing to acquire, while always remembering how little unpleasantness the people want to hear and how much blatant school spirit they ask for. It is supposed to be organized; contem¬ porary style; containing insight and originality. But all read the words differently. All take it under a different pretext. The reader is the judgement—maker. To incorporate the informative with the stylistic is one thing. To do it without leaving behind uncertain connotations is another. Who has the right memories of a year? The objective is to present a book which triggers one ' s mind into retro¬ spection. It is yay or ney as to whether the objective is ever reached, but the problem is latching onto a format followed throughout the creation of a yearbook. Do we trigger the thoughts of a football fan or a drama fan? Run pictures of the graduation cerimonies or the free school courses? It ' s all guesswork. But it is not all done at random choosing. There is the attempt to please all-usually resulting in pleasing noone. It helps to be less criti¬ cal of those who are reading it those who are creating it. What we call creative writing is pre—determined. Little poems about sunsets, romantic essays on life vs. death. These are the expected and accepted. Those who attempt to go further run into the brick walls. Whether we damn these defiants or take them into our open arms depends on much: style, sensitivity, a sense of humor. Or is it when they touch on our moods as well as their own that we praise their piece? Expression is something else. TIGERAMA Janice Berard, editor; Kara Schonberger; Anne Marshall; Larry Clay. THE ARTS These few people h ear many a word about the easy life of the art¬ ist, the un-academia of a creative group. Not so. Within these circles one must incorporate the senses one possesses with the knowledge acquired through academic brain storming. No one can deny that hours long after school time you may hear the remains of a trumpet or an attempt at the right interpretation of O ' Neill. Does anyone still believe the easy way out is the artists ' life? There are multitudes of mind-bending road-blocks involved in the creation of a simple clay sculpture or silk screen print; the construction of an aesthetically ap¬ pealing stage setting or a series of lights patterned to portray a time of night. And to have one ' s vocal chords project the tone, flavor, and message one desires, it requires more than simply the opening of the mouth. The singers of the school realize that here is more in¬ volved than stretching the physical voice to its fullest potenti al. One must also stretch the mental voice to its fullest potential. The the¬ ater—it not only deals with memorization of lines, appropriate cos¬ tume and hair color, entrances and departures. This will not suffice the expectations of the critical audience. It also deals with individual judgements, interpretations, unique lifts of the voice and eyebrow. There is as much intellectual exhaustion involved in playwork as in labwork. The artists indulge in creative endeavor. This encompasses a whole realm of concepts and efforts many people don ' t see. There is more to fine arts than meets the eye or the ear. 89 THESPIANS 1st row (I. to r.) CONCERT CHIOR GIRLS CHORUS 95 HONOR SOCIETIES A barrior must be passed—a goal reached. Whether d one with ease or diffi¬ culty, the result proves boundaries of learning and knowledge almost non-exis¬ tent. These are the people who have fulfilled the desire to be more than aver¬ age, through either high test scores, class grades, or percentiles. But the motivation must come from within one ' s self. For rewards are few and far be¬ tween. No Honor Societies or fame. The only reward is that of self-satisfaction. The feeling of accomplishment reeking with hard work and long hours is the only compensation. When the forcefully sought accomplishment is truly grasped, an inner glow is lit. And when the burning, swelling feeling of success is there, it feels good; very good. Sometime. There are of course, those who prefer to look upon their progress as a trite achievement. For some, the fence seems to be too easily scaled; requirements are not rigid enough. With the feel¬ ing of ' slipping in ' they nod and cooly admit the victory. But too often there is an important ingredient lacking. Pride. The honor simply isn ' t The Ultimate for them. People tend to set their own goals and priorities before them and harbor them in their own minds. While admitting the achievement, there is little real fullfillment involved. It may happen that an individual ' s strongest desires lie elsewhere, not being on the list of Honor Society Members. Nevertheless, the records are there. And among them are statistics which prove much of the cyni¬ cism invalid. For perhaps on the outside while the meaning is lost or forgotten, on the inside there is that tiny spark of inticement. And sparks turn into flames. 96 national HONOR SOCIETY Carol Anderson; Teri Ayers; Roberta Barnes; Jan Berard; Alex Bernstein; Janet Broida; Judy Brooks; Marcella Buehl; Sheryl Caon; Micheal Carter; Tina Cheng; Wendy Cheng; Jennifer Cox; Johnny Conrads; Mark Converse; Cynthia Dahlin; Martha Digges; Mark Elliot; Barry Duncan; Peggy Ellis; Roy Ellis; Catherine Erikson; Jono Evans; Joel Everett; David Fleming; Becky Fortney; Lisa Furner; Wilson Gilbert; Sandy Gorham; Kathy Hager; IHarper; Janet Hellner; Lucy Hemmendinger; Peter Hirschfeld; Jenny Hope; Drew Hutchinson; Marianne Jansen; Jane Johnson; Gale Kabat; Pam Keys; Wood Kidner; Janet Kirch; Cherie Kitchell; Leslie Klein; Mike Lamarra; Linda Laynor; Mark Leitch; Fred Lees; Joan Lusk; Anne Melcille; Ann Minogue; Heather Molzan; Jenny Mohr; Joe Moore; Mark Murphy; Bill Nutter; Mark Nyboe; Roger Pines; James Powell; Margaret Powell; Devon Rawson; Anne Renner; John Risley; Asher Roth; Henry Rosen; Karen Rutledge; Charlotte Saunders; Ellen Roshak; Eric Schonberger; Kara Schonberger; Kelly Shapiro; Scott Shender; Dennis Shifflet; Tom Shock; Kathy Schultz; Sandy Smith; Glenda Stephan; Jean Stevenson; Deborah Stroud; John Sullivan; Carol Thomson; Jon Trigg; Stephanie Turpin; Dianne Vinsh; Bonnie Watchel; Kathy Weldon; Gary Williams; Sallie Williams. 97 Seated (I. to r.) LATIN HONOR SOCIETY LANGUAGES Beyond the walls of often-stuffy classrooms, much be learned through supplementary study of the people and their diverse customs in foreign lands. Besides conquering the lingo and the one-million ex¬ ceptions to the rules of any new tongue, broad horizons open up to those interested linguists. Fascinating discoveries about different people in different regions often provoke and kindle new interests, whether the subject is classic or modern. In addition these clubs offer a chance to further study the history and origins of other nations in a new and stimulating manner. Each club is given a chance to present its findings and achievements at such times as International Night. Here they can share their innovations with others who also wish to wide their knowledge of the languages. Here one might see tendencies of all people. Basic things of importance are common; it ' s an instinetual force that eventually leads everyone to the same status. Thus the members of these clubs come to apprehend fundamentals of life. Seemingly unintentional, but usually occurent. But in an effort to sound ambitious, the aspect of enjoyment should not be lost in the shuffle. Much pleasure can be derived from ex¬ periencing sauteed snails, Spanish Flamingo dancing, or the telling of Creek myths. And in the end, each adds to the expansion of the per¬ sonality, hopefully increasing enthusiasm for our everyday living. One can then appreciate eating a hamburger, circle-dancing and hearing elephant jokes. 10 ) mm rr r r ! i i i p fX. ' (I. to r.) RELATIONS As the necessity for lasting communication grows, so does the importance of these groups. They are continuously faced with the bridging of certain gaps within their own school as well as surrounding society. They must be able to see both sides of the issues and consequently make unbiased decisions for the betterment of all. Whether representing the students, the school, or the district the purpose of these groups remains imperative for an understanding between many kinds of people. Wide varieties of personalities are included in the num¬ bers related to and around our school. The job of interpreter for the populace involve complex and diplomatic methods. The purpose of these groups is not to congregate in a backroom and whisper confidances; construct supremacy and discuss problems without the student body ' s ideas. Not so. The theory is that communications are bred by inter-re¬ lating , mingling, so to speak. There is obviously no way to mingle when a per¬ son is considered one of Those Officers. The barriers go up, the purpose is lost beneath the squabbles of interpersonal relationships. Support helps. Needless to say, if the student body were to vow allegiance to these relations clubs there would still be the difficulties. But who denies that it ' s easier to relate to someone when he has a kind expression or a sympathetic word? The involved ones are just like anyone else. Taken for granted, but often accused of bulling or wheeling and dealing. The criticism is often contrived, and could be avoided. Necessary is to give a little, to let the cynicism pass by, to accept their purpose and help them out 106 (I. to r.) MATH TEAM EXPANDING EDUCATION There are some people, strange as it may seem, who have stumbled upon their futures and latched onto their own per¬ sonal areas of interest. Although some are not as sure as others, there seems to be a general feeling that the working students, the students who ' ve somewhat decided their real interests, are likely to make it through to what they want. An outlet for these, people was needed, to say the least. If one knows what one wants, one should be able to try and get it. The six-hour school day is simply not enough. Thus, the evolution of groups to fur¬ ther specific learning interests: DECA, VICA, FHA, FTA, FMC, and GASP. If the goal is there, the means by which to regain it is available. But wh at to do with the individuals who have no specifically catagorized interest? Logic fascinates them. Psyching another thinker of laying facts on the line and seeing if one ' s opponent can top them. Thus, the evolution of groups to allow the expan¬ sion of such yearnings: Math Team, Debate Team, and Chess Club. A (I. to r.)
