Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1971 volume:

And then: Out of the morning, people arrive, opening a door. It yawns, groans, and slams shut, shaking the school awake. A blast of sharp air floods the lobby. Hands grasp books as the rhythm of lockers opened and banged shut reverberates down the halls. The day begins. Buses roar up and grumble to a stop, people pour in, and the lobby is a carnival — laughter and talk. Lights click on, telephones ring, the library jams with conversations as last minute workers rush before . . . The bell rings, and it begins again. sa p msc Hlgn Scnocj U rary rj ' i ; k m 1 M 1 V m m P m | |■ ■ r Jr j BP ' ahh SHI f .. -v. The roar of Groveton’s jostling crowds fades to the rumbling of buses out back. A vacant C-hall echoes the sound of warming car engines in the parking lot. A remnant few of the student population kick waste paper across the floor as they wander off. Yet look again . . . 3:26 P.M.? In a room the painters have recently left sandalwood tan, the President leans over a podium at an audience lost in conversation. The mild growl of talk murmurs up and down the empty hall outside. A bang on the desk. Another clearing of the throat. At last a sudden shout for order — Silence, and the meeting begins. 3:33 P.M. The question is money. Claude Jones? Crank? Or are concerts allowed at all? What’s in — (More importantly) What’ll produce the most money at the least expense? A suggestion (in a small voice) presents itself out of the back of the room, how about a bake sale? Groan. Hiss. A Cascade of outrage buries that suggestion. 3:40 P.M. The subject continues. A car wash? Perhaps on Saturday, can you suggest a better day?, the President asks. Gales of controversy erupt — each date is impossible for half the membership. The audience gradually loses itself in conversation again. Desperation begins to color the President’s face; he notices even the Secretary has abandoned her note-keeping. (Boy 1 met Girl 2 when Boy 3 who has applied to College 4 didn’t show). A laugh. The President yells for order in reply. Back to work. 3:47 P.M. At last — the President sighs — a decision made. A car wash on Saturday unless it rains. Old Business over the New Business can begin; the Secretary writes a new headline in her minutes. And so it goes: Oneirata in the English Hall, French, Spanish and German Clubs down in the Language corridor, Band practicing up by the Auditorium and a Debate work session in the Library. At night National Honor Society and Keyettes will meet; during the day Tiger Rag, Latin Club and Tigerama. Each an added moment to enrich a Groveton experience. Long after the classes have departed for another day, the school hums with ACTIVITIES. 4:25 P.M. Members pull on coats and, in groups, set off for the upper lobby or their own cars. Several band members, waiting for their bus, park their instruments up front. A little crowd develops, as sports practice ends, sharing jokes, the latest news and experiences. The librarian shuts the library doors and makes her way to her car. Hand after hand pulls upon the rail, grasps the back of a seat and slides into a bus seat. 4:30 P.M. With the buses’ departure, Groveton settles in for the night, unless of course, a dance (and there were many), a concert (there were not a few), the Faculty Bout with WPGC, Black and Gold Night, the SPTA ' s “High School,” “Once Upon a Mattress” or the Jubilee enliven it once more with students, teachers and administrators who don’t need classes to learn with one another. 12:00 Midnight and there is silence. Thomas 119 W--V I if I I hey, hey, hey, shout!, Tigers, shout!, hey, hey, hey, shout! . . . The gym atmosphere is that of a crowded room in mid-August. But the month is February and Hayfield’s gym a cavernous and foreign arena. That is at first. In the game’s first delirious minutes all the strangeness evaporates. Score: 5-0; Hayfield seems lost on its home court. The lead lengthens as the evening wears on. Hoarse voices yell it louder: As Pollard makes the outside shot, who notices the muggy breeze tasting of sweat from hundreds of massed bodies? Victory! Yell it louder! Victory! The Groveton stands seem to have fully absorbed the spirit of a sign seen tacked to a school wall the day before: Winning isn’t Everything, But losing isn’t Anything. In the glory of this moment, forget yesterday ' s defeats; tonight Yell it louder! Victory! Now a sea of faces screams in tides of apprehension, exultation, concern and scorn. When Hayfield holds up the sign: We Like Our Team Groveton chants in reply: We ' re no. 1! We’re no. 1! We’re no 1! We’re no. 1! We ' re no. 1! We’re no. 1! We’re no. 1! At last it ends. Like a final amen that buzzer rolls across the field house. Forgetting everything else, the stampede on court begins, a tide of one emotion which tonight a hundred parched mouths can share. The announcer gives up; the police look on cautiously bemused, and undiluted bedlam momentarily overruns Hayfield’s ordered floors. Raise your Hands! Stamp Your Feet! Snap your Fingers!, ' cause Tigers can’t be beat! hey, hey, hey . . . Eventually the crowd does fall back but what follows can only be anticlimactic. When Greg Holland pulls the net down at last, it is all over. The trophy, the individual awards pass with subsiding tides of cheers from the exhausted victors. Groveton ' s real moment of triumph came when the buzzer crowned the Gunston District King. Crowds stream out, all talk, rumbling up and down the nighttime halls. But outside old spirits swell again: Horn after horn after horn blares. A rebel yell, a shout of joy and hands waving disappear up the road. Then silence. The night leaves only the memory of the evening. Three hours slip away, are gone, and the next day is a quiet Saturday. But the moment remains. Tigers do the bougaloo! . . . A realization of a dream which runs through all those long hours of practice: the football players squaring off in the mud the rain has made, the Lady Tigers standing out on a wind-swept hockey hill and battling for the puck, the Track team circling and recircling as the rain comes down, the wrestlers straining muscle against muscle on a black and gold mat. Raise your hands! Every minute burns with excitement, the tide of Groveton spirit forming experiences which are deeply satisfying. The accomplishments of the JV and Varsity Hockey as well as the Basketball teams bring the tangible rewards. But all the teams call forth the spirit, whether on a baseball diamond, tennis court, golf course or cross-country path . . . Stamp your feet! that the competition and drama of SPORTS evoke. Snap your fingers, ’cause the Tigers can’t be beat!, hey, hey, hey . . . They ' ve come from weekends, relaxed hours with friends to put on the many masks of school: The special ‘dogged interest’ gaze for first period when sleep and boredom fog the mind, or the ‘intent concentration’ frown for study hall. The ‘cheery smile’ in the halls to hide glazed depression of too iong, too many and too much of everything. And finally, here, the camera mask — hair straight, eyes wide, alert, ready to leave the room, plunge into the hall, and continue. The noise swells (Talk, laughter, many feet on the tiles, yells of hundreds on shouts of thousands, books piled and then thrown into lockers.) At an intersection of the two halls, the hurried movement grin d s t o a h a I t ( Groveton ’71 is crowded. ) One can only see faces; unendingly diverse; the lights glare down into their eyes: Blue Grey Brown and Hazel eyes. Troubled, peaceful, brooding, glazed, sparkling, absent, intense, angry, awake, asleep, empty eyes. Exposed expression. What are these students thinking? Then the crowd disperses, Junior, Freshman, Sophomore and Senior each make their ways to different rooms. The cross-section of students, the log-jam of CLASSES, breaks. And the crowd members are separate again. Fourteen hundred minds absorbing, rejecting, creating, destroying and shaping the Life of Groveton. The camera has tried to capture these persons; it has tried to record the multitude of faces, capture a fleeting moment of the mind. The result can only be faint shadow images, mugshots for memory. Is not the shepherd joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek a God unencumbered? . . From The Prophet Kahlil Girbran YEAR END At first glance Groveton 1971 looks the same as past years. The face of the school was unaltered — the parking lots beneath the rows of windows, the sweeping lobby entrance, the progression of seasons, the strangeness of September and the drabness of February dying in May ' s gladness. Yet seen at year’s end the past ten months have left a unique history. A new administration, new student govern¬ ment, Free school, even the fresh paint on the halls are witnesses to another year within Groveton ' s brick walls; 1971 was a year for innovations. Mr. Figgers arrived to head a new staff. In his first year as Principal he was joined by Mr. Price as Assistant Principal for Administration while Mrs. Torrice spent her last year in Groveton as Assistant Principal for Instruction. Mr. Ashline became an Administrative Aid while faculty ranks were replenished by twenty-five new teachers. As the year grew older, the new administration learned about the school even as teachers and students came to know the new faces in the Office and in the classroom. Student government, designed last year, began its first term. The executive council, composed of district represen¬ tatives and a council president, met twice monthly and in the magazine campaign raised $2,000. Mike Williams served as president during the 1970-71 sessions until April elections named Kim Cross as the new executive. There was an enlarged Black Studies curriculum, elective nine week units for Juniors and Seniors in English, and several ninth grade classes experienced a team teaching program extending across several departments. The SPTA offered a number of night-time programs, including the showing of “High School” and a visit by the Lorton in¬ mates, the “Inner Voices”. The Charrette, after presen¬ tations before the school board, obtained funds for a ren¬ ovated library and the improved locker rooms, even as it continued developing the plans for the Groveton campus of the future. Free School was a striking success pulling in large crowds of students. It demonstrated again some of the unique qualities of this school and this year: on a Thursday morn¬ ing, Free School classes ranged from Chinese brush painting, to Child Psychology, the Marx Brothers, the Stock Market, West Africa and Peanuts yarn creations. Drama’s fall musical production was “Once Upon A Mat¬ tress”; in the fall “The Rape of the Belt” was staged. “Purgatory” by W.B. Yeats gained a Superior rating at the District One Act Play festival and Richard Edelman earned recognition as Best Actor. The Band won highest ratings at the state competiton continuing its outstanding record. Moreover band members Lisa London, Michele de Gastyne, Ed Schuster, Sharon Fraley, Scott Broertjes, Bill Hahne, and Sue Sharp were named members of All-Regional Band. The Chorus successfully presented its annual “Jubilee” as the highlight of its program. Students excelled in after school activities; one can’t name them all. Distributive Education students were first in the District Leadership Conference held at Hayfield. Tom Hodges placed first in public speaking and Donna Murphy led the field in Sales Judging. Later, at the state conference at Richmond, Tom was among the top six in Virginia in public speaking. Many students won Gold Key awards in the Scholastic Art Contest; Ed Kaitz for charcoal, Sandy Brenner for photography, Kurt Dubbe for graphics, Lyn Chytilo in pottery with two honorable mentions. Debbie Powell was na med Better Crocker Homema ker of Tomorrow and Suzanne Jett received a cash award for her mechanical drawing. National Merit honored four Groveton students and Na¬ tional Achievement presented awards to three more. Our teams did well, their players were honored. The Debate Team swept the Johns Hopkins Tournament and had triumphs in the Gunston District, the Washington Forensics League and the Wheaton High School Tournament. The Math Team finished third in district. In Football, after a hard season, Wally Anderson wo n the Sportsmanship Award, Mike Scott and Terry Metcalf the Outstanding. Mike Williams was most improved. The victorious Basketball team saw Bob Aylmer Most Valuable, David Kreutzer Sportsman¬ ship. Roy Ginsburg earned Outstanding and Andy Hawks Sportsmanship in Wrestling. Hockey champions included Amy Valentine as Best sport and Debbie Bissett as Out¬ standing Hockey player. The school was painted lemon yellow, sandlewood, green and blue. The face of Groveton will clearly bear the mark of 1971. The support of the surrounding community runs throughout school life. Parents shouting at a wrestling match, students down at a Route one carry-out, working students in Alexandria on the job. The following establishments have again demonstrated this support. Their support of us merits your support of them; their ADS follow. belle view esso belle view blvd. and ft. hunt rd. alexandria, Virginia 22307 765-5110 alexandria gazette 717 n. st. asaph st. alexandria, Virginia frazier’s roofing and sheetmetal company 6422 richmond highway alexandria, Virginia 22306 768-4533 colyer’s esso service 7312 richmond highway alexandria, Virginia 22306 king hardware 6228 north kings highway alexandria, Virginia 22307 768-7100 steven Windsor landmark 345-5445 willston 533-1337 alexandria 836-0900 Springfield 451-1950 451-1950 hollin hall variety store, inc. 7902 fort hunt rd. alexandria, Virginia 22308 768-8849 needle and thread shoppe, inc. 1520 belle view blvd. alexandria, Virginia 22307 768-8849 fannon fuel duke and henry sts. alexandria, Virginia penn daw lanes 6239 shields ave. alexandria, Virginia 22303 Wellington house 809 s.
