mw ' I . f fl —■ ■■■ TIGERAMA 1970 FOURTEENTH EDITION GROVETON HIGH SCHOOL POPKINS LANE ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA TABLE OF CONTENTS Pictorial Essay Faculty Activities Sports Classes Production Notes Advertisements 4 The school year begins with a hesitant aware¬ ness of what is to come. Once again the random gambols of summer yield to the ineluctable three Furies—“Readin’, Ritin’, and sultry ’Rithmetic. We fall into the routine pattern with amazing swiftness. But there is also present the knowledge that this year will be different from all others. Perhaps you’ll start going with what’s-his-name, or not have that crotchety old Mrs. So-and-so for English. At any rate, Groveton’s there, and you are once again a part of it. Enter. Action. 6 7 8 Student and teacher should share the desire to learn from each other. The real learning finds its source not in the textbook but in the willingness to search and discover, for better or worse. The student is successful to the extent that he makes use of the opportunities for his education, in the largest sense. The teacher who can make those opportunities worth pursuing for the student is truly exercising his honored profession. When student and teacher can exchange roles freely, effortlessly—when person-to-person education is really happening, it is a wonderful thing. 9 10 I watch and spread your smile and pause in life’s fitful running to know this moment’s bliss with you After six weeks of hard practice comes the first game, and the season begins. The fans come in every weather and watch the games. The band plays faithfully and well, and we hear the good old Tiger fight songs through thick and thin. At season’s end they can feel proud to have done the job. HOMECOMING QUEEN: Debbi White 14 HOMECOMING Court: Seated: Bonnie Harder, Suzette Smith, Debby Stinnett. Standing: Carol Tallman, Vickie Ingham, Patty Crawford. 15 M. y , 1 a 1 1 nj ?K i vc T r Ik V W F You want your team to win, and they want to win, too. But what you want and what the ref gives you may be two different things. And it’s anybody’s guess just what sort of tricks that roundball will be made to do. Our daily peregrinations to, from, and in school take us many miles each school year. Maybe it is their necessity that renders them endurable. Of course, we do occasionally buck the system; and the happiest trips are those in the away direction. This much can be said: such mandatory migrations prepare us well for later life, for, alas! the time de¬ mands on us will yet multiply. Perhaps, though, there is a heightened appreciation of precious free time when it comes. 20 ■ ■ Drama requires that personality sublimation and transformation occur in order to produce an ex¬ perience of dimension and reality from an artificial and contrived chain of events. Perhaps it is easier to play a dramatic role than to live a veritable life, since the fate of each actor is already delineated and determined. Imagination comes to supplant season. mm Wholesome recreation for the mind and body abounds within our walls, and such recreation is as fascinating and diverse as one may choose. 24 25 26 From inanimate contraptions they coax tones and melodies somewhat imitative of the voice, and which yet astronomically exceed its capacity for harmony and variety. Not only can musical instru¬ ments reflect human emotions and thoughts, but they are actually capable of creating qualities and patterns intrinsic to themselves upon the human conscious and subliminally awaken what was al¬ ways there. 27 28 Glancing back at our lives we find strewn here and there the memories of little victories—over limitations of self, over the other team. Or maybe you beat up some guy you thought was a real jerk. Some things get trophies. Most don’t. It doesn’t matter. You know you did, and you can think back with pride. 29 Dust to dust; but while a living soul, man fashions palpable images which, like him, must return dust- ward. But never without having brought an eternal enduring suggestion that there is that which lasts forever. Person-person interactions a re a much-studied and much-neglected subject at Groveton. We find that some people are more loving and tactful than others. 4 32 33 Mary Ann Purvis TOP TEN Stephen Shenker 34 Vicki Ingham Becky Schmidt Anne Harper Carol Tallman Raphael Schach Katy Weaver Steven Walske Barbara Harris NATIONAL MERIT AWARDS J. McConnaughey, S. Shenker, J. Holmes, T. Broida, M. Jonas. 37 The presence of Dom and Dion at Groveton was amazing, natural, singular, plural, serene, inspiring, unaffected, perspicacious, understanding, and somehow very right, and it rewarded us all. 38 39 In school, as everywhere, we find the juxtaposi¬ tion of the eerie and the natural. The discriminating and experienced observer knows that both natural and unnatural are to a purpose, and such a one can quietly feel and frame the beauty of each. The true scientist is humble: he knows how little he really knows. He can join the poet in contempletion of nature, but is not content with grandilo¬ quent pronouncements. His search for the “how” extends from the infinite to the infinitasimal, but he can only take a crack at the “why.” i We turn our attention naturally to the things of importance to us, and ig¬ nore all else. Truth and reality are, af¬ ter all, more attractive. We try to get ahead in our quest of truth, either ac¬ tively or passively. , wmfw 4 You just can’t deny that there’s I something beautiful about the human face. Sometimes, I mean. Some charac¬ ters are better just not looked at. h i i h I 48 ■-v ( ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Doris A. The madrigal was sung to amuse the singers as much as the listeners, a secular tune of pleasing lyric sung without accompaniment. The intention of MADRIGALS the Groveton madrigal singers is the same as their forerunners of four hundred years ago: to create rich a cappella harmony of a handful of stout voices, singing personal, communicative songs of lasting pleasure and import. 96 Members: First Row: K. When well- trained, its intrinsic timbre and modularity are un¬ equaled in production of pleasing sound. Tonal quality, tonal color, and harmony are best exem¬ plified in the work of a sizable group of people who love to sing. The Symphonic Choir is such a group. It endeavors to utilize the full musical po¬ tential of the human voice. 97 GIRLS’ CHORUS Members: First Row: J. Eubanks, M. Cannole, E. Roshak, M. Meyer, H. Molzan, W. Bass; Second Row: L. Beall, W. Perhaps he is one who begins with the same raw materials, tactile and mental, as his peers, but reaches by degrees a special and unique aware¬ ness, an appreciation of the beautiful, and an attempt to emulate beauty as he sees it, to create beautiful things of his own. That which the artist creates, he is. In creating a thing of beauty, the artist feels rush upon him the awareness that in his consciousness is beauty. This work is his thought objectives. In recognizing the art of others, we acknowledge that this same consciousness of beauty is within them. The Art Guild is a group of young artists who share a concern for aesthetic quality and a desire to produce objects of beauty and purpose. Members: D. Frantz, N. Danner, C. Walske, M. McDaniel, J. But difficult or no, the actor’s art is in no wise unnatural nor confined to thespians, in whom is found its quintessence: how many of us can claim patterns of speech, dress, behavior, yes, thinking com¬ pletely and uniquely our own? Very often the spectator is not aware of the large role (ho ho) of the stage crew in creating a performance which engages the audience in a real- seeming experience, while remaining faithful to the playwright’s design. It requires as much imagination as acting itself. Members: P. Byrne E. Edelman J. Conway J. Rusinow K. There is nothing so gratifying as success in en¬ riching the understanding of another person. But the students in FTA who observe cannot fail to see that at present there is more meaningful learn¬ ing outside the classroom than in it. Myriads of sheer data injected or spoonfed daily will be re¬ gurgitated, not retained, for students will not sub¬ mit to the memory-bank treatment. That is not communication, and FTA members recognize this fact: they themselves are students. Their chal¬ lenge, then, is to remain students in spirit,—to dare to communicate meaningfully in a harmonious human relationship. Everyone wants to learn. It is time the schools began to teach. I hope what I’ve written is a help. Claude Jones and Crank and folk musicians came to Grove- ton. We liked them very much. Then there were the Drama presentations: Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Lorraine Hansbury’s To Be Young, Gifted and Black, and several medieval plays. Except for The Crucible, these plays were a part of the English Department’s Humani¬ ties Enrichment Program (HEP). In addition, there were lunch- shift productions whenever there were people enough. In the Groveton District Drama Festival the Thespians got a rating of Excellent for their production of Abraham and Isaac. The Choral Department presented several concerts in the course of the year, including the notorious “Or Would You Rather Be . . .?” VICA students Becky Welch and Tim Elliott swept Northern Virginia and the entire state to be selected VICA Students of the Year. It was unprecedented for two students from the same school to win the contest for the top two places in the whole state. Debbi White won the Daughters of the American Revolution award for Groveton High School. Groveton’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow was Meg Jonas. Steve Shenker came in first in prose reading in the state forensics competition. All five of Groveton’s National Merit Semifinalists were also Finalists: Ted Broida, John Holmes, Meg Jonas, Janet McCon- naughey, and Steve Shenker. Shenker was selected a Merit Scholar. The It’s Academic team was eliminated in the first round by Springbrook High by a margin of only ten points. Groveton sent four delegates to the newly-formed Area I Student Advisory Council: SCA president Bill Radin, elected representatives Tom Sowanick and Wally Anderson, and ap¬ pointee Marco Cuniberti. When Radin was elected Area I chairman, Don Witten was picked to fill his vacancy in the Groveton delegation. Later in the year a County-wide council convened, with Marco Cuniberti representing Groveton. Varsity debate finished with an honorable if not enviable record, with Negs Fred Horecky and Jon Orleans third in the Gunston District and Affs Sue Seligmann and Terri Ry- barczyk in fourth. Switchsiders Tom Ward and Wes Williams also finished fourth in their category. The first-place negative speaker award went to Jon Orleans, while Fred Horecky won the third-place negative speaker award. Six Groveton artists’ works were among thirty-four selected by judges for exhibition at the Hecht Art Gallery in February: Becky Ellis, Marie Ferritto, Becky Levine, Martha McDaniel, Sara Frye, and Carol Walske. Carol’s entry later went to New York to compete nationally. The English Department’s HEP program was highly suc¬ cessful. It consisted of four units: American folklife, the American black experience, the Church in medieval society, and realism. Elizabeth Cotton, Mike Seeger, and John Jack¬ son ' s performances as part of HEP were particularly well- received. The SCA drafted a new constitution featuring an entirely new governmental system centered around community pre¬ cincts and strict representation which it hoped would success¬ fully replace the homeroom representatives’ forgotten func¬ tion. The new County Dress Code ruling was appreciated insofar as it let it all hang out. Almost all of it, anyway. The Symphonic Band received a superior rating from each of three judges at the District Band Festival at West Spring- field High. It was the fifth year in a row that the band, under Mr. Wells’s direction, was so honored. No other band in the district has equalled their record. At the Fall Sports Awards Night, Nancy Perkins received the Outstanding Player award for hockey, while Bonnie Tanner got the award for sportsmanship. Most Outstanding Football Player went to Skip Scott; Russ Seward was cited the Most Improved Player. Mike Clark, Cross Country captain, received the Sportsmanship award, and Charlie Bish was named the Most Outstanding legwork man. Skip Scott also was honored for making All-Gunston District defense. In Winter Sports, wrestler Ian Brandau was the recipient of the Sportsmanship award. The Outstanding Wrestler title, not surprisingly, went to John Keith, who placed first in the district and regional contests and second in the state of Virginia. Roundballers Jack Jackson and John Smith shared the Best Player award, while Don Witten received the award for sportsmanship on the courts. Winners of the Roadeo during Safety Week were Donna Martin for girls and Bradford, Rex Smith for boys. As part of new County School Superintendent Watts’s “Staff Development” program, Groveton learned that it would lose both Mr. Taylor and Mr. DiGiosia next year. It is perhaps only in losing them that Groveton students realize the extent of their service to the students and to the school community. The Editor and Staff extend their special thanks to Jody Carr for all the invaluable help she provided in the production of this yearbook. From rest and sleep, which but thy picture be, Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow; And soonest our best men with thee do go— Rest of their bones and souls’ delivery! Thou’rt slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke. Why swell’st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And Death shall be no more: Death, thou shalt die! —John Donne 221 will-.
