“
September, 1968: Groveton students started the new year sobered by the occurrences of the summer—the violence in Chicago, the crushing of budding liberalism in Czechoslovakia. Though many were disappointed in their party’s choice for President, they were able to realign their hopes and the election provided a point of relevance between the school and the “outside”. And, surprisingly, not all involvement stopped with Election Day: Groveton students went on to make their wishes known in other areas. Outside was a world of change, a world where a last step toward the conquest of space was being made, where bastions of masculinity like Yale were opening their doors to women. It was a sad world, too: where Biafran children still died of malnutrition in a struggle for independence while our involvement in another such struggle kept us unwillingly entangled in our nation’s longest war. In preparation as heirs to this very world, students, backed by a student-oriented administration and faculty, attempted idealistically but rationally to solve the smaller problems of the school community rather than those of the “global village”. A human relations committee promoted new interracial understanding; “underground” newspapers acquired sponsors and came above ground as new chances for expression; while on the county level the attempts at a student union were generally abortiv e, the Groveton students developed this idea into an intraschool organization designed to discuss basic school policy conflicts and possible solutions; also devoted to problems within the school was the student-faculty committee, which could claim many important if minor achievements by the year’s end. Not every student was so involved, it will be argued; but the fact remains that some Groveton students did rise out of their apathy to try to bring sense and fairness to their world, an encouraging sign of potential. There were no campus riots to photograph as a visible symptom of this change; in the pictures—and the book—that follow and merely record impressions of the year, the reader will have to imagine for himself this “Zeitgeist” as an omnipresent force . . 2 TIGERAMA 1969 THIRTEENTH EDITION GROVETON HIGH SCHOOL POPKINS LANE ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA PICTORIAL ESSAY ... 4 ACADEMICS . 62 SPORTS . 128 ADS FEATURES . 46 ACTIVITIES. 82 CLASSES . 168 220 3 The sky is blue and I am blue, and yellow and black and white and green and grass and all the sheen of light on water. I don’t know what I am or what I want to be. I’m just in school and everything is new and I want to learn where to go. And while I wait I will reflect all experiences and visions of my world. I am here in fall when the fog of the river moves over the hill and the wind carries the sounds of boat horns. In winter I am here; there is snow, and in the spring, rain. I wait for the rain that steams off the blacktop as a sign of summer. Four seasons gone and I look for the pattern and the fog again. 7 Teachers: we stand for tomorrow. (do you know us, your progeny; do you know me?) We are the time to come, the destiny, and the challenge. (What do you have to give us?) We are strong-willed and strong-minded, of mettle and nerve and pluck. We have hope, anticipation, and we are open. (How will you mold and create us? in the image you are or as what you wished to be?) Audaciously we are here, the heirs, the challenge. And we are open. (How can you rate your success?) 8 . Ill I ffm - 10 In every action there is rhythm— in the wind, in patterned growth of plants. School has the confusing and conflicting rhythms of periods one, two, three, to seven. Each is different. There is the monotonous, sullen cadence of study and the slow aimlessness of vaguely listening. But there is the beat and laugh and spirit of a game. It is difficult to know how to react, sometimes— whether to be rowdy, demure, or confused and which of the rhythms to follow. 11 I ■- . ' • - ' ' .7 ®j ' 12 1 13 ■y I I can feel wet clay under fingernails; pictures in my mind; ink stain on finger side; paint on my face; glue in my hair. (Art is total involvement.) 15 Behind a wing the heavy lead is walking, peeling off his beard While another, watching him in a mirror, heightens the color of a face. An entrance made. There is a different world created, of illusion and ideals. To teach, or mock, or question by vision and imagination But when the actor has rubbed off the beard, and the flat has been removed, Only a transparency of action, words and colors, is left to the mind. 16 17 Sing, sing, sing, I can hear the beat and swing of the music of the band. Listen to the music as it turns and moves around you; listen to the dreams. Think of carousels whose canopies will billow and the horses lightly twist, twist, twist; think of laughing, dancing people joining hands in rings, rings, rings, as their feet beat syncopation in the streets. Feel the muscles of your toes as they flex and pull to go on a rhythm of their own. Sing and clap and listen to the music of your dreams, dreams, dreams . . . 20 22 23 Early we are taught Darwin. Early they teach us the distinguishing factors, Us to apes; In creativity and hands we differ. Together we use them To do and to build and to learn Every combination a statement Every achievement a monument. 24 25 26 27 We are the proud, the strong, and the free. When God make the Masai, we were of that mold, a different time, another place When God made the Masai, we were of that mold. I am so. As I stand among them it is proudly, and when I stand alone it is open. And strong, we are as unconquerable as the solo flight of an unbound bird. High-toned and high-spirited, we are free For we have the pride, the strength, and the wisdom. 29 • . V 4 ' 32 33 waw!- ■- ’■ ■ I like to stand and pant aside and cough and suck an orange. Pffft! after the ringing of the 3:05 bell, school dispells like the memory of a dream. FEATURES Groveton students could claim many individual triumphs this year. Senior Ellen Peel won statewide honors in both the Homemaker of Tomorrow competitions. The “It’s Academic” team of Steve Shenker, Felix Rogin, and captain Jennifer Leonard brought the first victory in eight years to Groveton in winning over two Maryland schools on the quiz program. In the National Merit Scholarship competition six seniors became finalists (Leslie Seeman, Carol Robinson, Ken Schorr, Ellen Peel, Felix Rogin, and Jennifer Leonard), while six others received Letters of Commendation (Patricia Farrell, Mary Garber, Peggy Allen, Emily Kaitz, Frances Reynolds, and Kathy Coleman). Chosen as Outstanding Teenagers of America were Ken Schorr, Ellen Peel, and Jennifer Leonard. The local D.A.R. chapter presented their annual award to senior Tish Farrell. In the National Scholastic Art Competition, Groveton had three winners of Honorable Mentions; Denise Cavalier, Martha McDaniels, and Susan Riesgo. Homecoming was a first this year: a Saturday afternoon game with a float competition between various clubs. Senior Judi Thomas was the tearful queen and reigned that night to the music of the Manic Depression. Other sports features included a basketball game between the Harlem Stars and members of the Groveton faculty, whose profits went toward Groveton’s first intramural bowling program, and the annual Powderpuff game, which ended in a stalemate as the padded, hirsute cheerleaders failed to exhort either juniors or seniors to make even one goal. The S.P.T.A.-sponsored Visiting Scholars Program was continued this year. Scholars included Senator William Spong (D.—Va.), a local resident, and Dr. R. Baird Shuman from Duke University, a poet and educator, who spoke on writing as part of the Humanities Enrichment Program. The drama department had one of its most active years. It instituted the lunch-shift drama program, unique in the area, which permitted any student with an interest in drama to air his talents. The department also made a point of supplementing the various HEP themes, producing Aristophanes’ “The Acharnians” in conjunction with the unit on politics; “The Boor” and “A Marriage Proposal” for the Russian theme; and “Royal Hunt of the Sun” as a South American supplement. The big production of the year was William Archibald’s “The Innocents”, a play based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. The drama department also participated as part of the Fine Arts Department in the musical “Pajama Game”, produced in May. 47 HOMECOMING Judi Thomas, Homecoming Queen 48 Homecoming Court: Seated: Nancy Kolzak; Standing: Peggy Allen, Vicki Arnett, Mary Margaret Rusnak, Ellen Peel, Sherry Shelton, Sally Still. 49 Anne Halpern Felix Rogin Francis Reynolds 51 Nancy Kolzak Leslie Seeman Ellen Peel ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT Top Ten 52 1 1 ' V h .- j From front of car: Leslie Seeman, Jennifer Leonard, Felix Rogin, Carol Robinson, Ellen Peel (Merit Scholar), Ken Schorr. This was particularly true of the social studies department, where emphasis was on currency of material and creative problem analysis. Courses included a freshman experiment in American Political Behavior, a West and non-West class, and a combination for many juniors of the traditional American history and government units into one two-year course. The social studies department also presented for the school the CBS documentary series, “Of Black America’’, which provoked much deep thinking and controversy over the country’s racial situation. The English department’s excellent Humanities Enrichment Program was extended to include all students this year. Units included studies on politics. South America, Russia, and Africa, backed up by movies, lectures, and correlated reading. Other landmarks were varied. The math department obtained the use of a computer for several weeks on which many students learned the rudiments of computer programming. An honors chemistry class taught basic science concepts to sixth- grade classes at Bucknell Elementary School. Senior government classes participated in “Crisis-Congo’’, a simulation set in 1975 and controlled through the NET television network. Four coeds from Madison helped out this year in the English, foreign language, art, and physical education departments as student teachers. They were Nancy Gilliam, Judy Cohen, Candace Borges, and Joyce Plaughter. 63 64 ADMINISTRATION Rodney B. Taylor A.B., M.Ed., University of North Carolina Principal Marion W. This year’s Student Cooperative Association, headed by David West, can claim several worthwhile accomplishments. Its annual magazine campaign made its goal of ten thousand dollars; the school’s share was parcelled out to activities and the library. Games were bought for entertainment use during the extended lunch periods, and the benches in Project Paradise replaced. (The National Honor Society used the extra time for a tutoring program.) A domestic exchange was effected with students from Hartford, Connecticut, whose comments dwelled largely upon Groveton’s freedoms and informality. As usual, Groveton’s clubs won many honors for their work. National Thespian Troop 1899 won a superior rating locally and at state with its production of Jules Feiffer’s “Crawling Arnold’’. Groveton’s Vocational and Industrial Club received top honors in its district, while President Ken Fisher was named V.I.C.A. Student of the Year for Northern Virginia. The newspaper. Tiger Rag, brought back a first place rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention. Mr. Well’s Golden Tigers Band earned top rating on all entries in the district band festival. Among many other service activities, the Key and Keyette Clubs sponsored this year’s Safety Week. As in other years, it involved grisly movies, discussions, reaction tests, pledges of safe driving, and the Roadeo. Winners in the event were Goodloe Suttler and Jane Foster. 83 Seated: First Row: S, Seligman (Undersec. of Interior), R. Spivack (Undersec. of Orienta¬ tion), K. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUB OF AMERICA 127 SPORTS ® Groveton’s fall sports were on the whole rather disappointing. Students saw the football team, which had done so well in the 1967 season, meet with bad luck and deliver a record corresponding more to those of previous years. Some of the team members who really kept on trying were recognized in the awards program: Most Valuable Player—Sam Handy; Most Improved Player—Bill Robinson; and Best Sportsmanship—Ron Zurek. Hockey, captained by Barbara Prentiss and Most Valuable Player Anne Halpern, brought in a better record for the season, with only one district defeat. The Sportsmanship trophy went to goalie Debbie Smith. In winter sports we made spectacular showings at tournaments. For the first time in Groveton’s history, the Tiger basketball team won the Gunston District tournament. While they disappointingly lost to season champion Edison in a play-off, members of the team were recognized in the all-tournament listings (David Arnold and Randy Barnett, who was also named to the all- Gunston team), while David Arnold was singled out as the most valuable player in the whole tournament. The team itself awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy to Randy Barnett, and the Sportsmanship award to Bruce Newman. The Freshman Tiger team brought great hopes for future tournaments when they placed first in the district. The girls’ basketball record suffered somewhat from inexperience; Diane Tanner received the Sportsmanship award. In wrestling, though the team finished with a losing season, it placed seventh among twenty-four schools in the regional tournament. Individual winners were Tom Keith, district champion, and his brother John Keith, Groveton’s Most Valuable wrestler who won the regional tournament and placed second in the state. Sportsmanship went to Roy Ginsberg. So the roster of this year’s activities involving the various classes is short. In the magazine campaign where the four classes competed for percentages of the take, the freshmen won out, followed by the sophomores. The seniors’ modicum of privileges did include a senior reading room (or lounge, as it was commonly called) where seniors could go relax during study halls and lunch. To raise money for the prom, the juniors revived the junior class show tradition and produced an entertaining revue involving music, satire, much humor, and even a freakish, audience-involving “happening” staged by the drama department. 169 FRESHMEN Officers: J.
