Now we are transported, in exhilaration to a world of jubilation flowerpowerflowerofyouth; With springtide, springald and airiness brazenly vivacious as we breathe. XVII The game of champions, each with his trademark: something broken sprained dislocated Each sweating, striving for two uprights of wood. Playfortyeightrundowntheside is accomplished (or not) automatically with a vestige of hate and courage lumped in. We are indomitable. Usually. The game of spectators, each one sitting, shouting groaning cold Each chanting maniacally to the beat of pom-poms. Fustentendoitagin in an oh so solemn manner. Who cares what it means 5 We have spirit. Usually. HOMECOMING QUEEN: Janie Lassiter The airy-fairy nymphs of Groveton Pease-blossoms, mustard seeds, and cob-webs Spritely laughing, dancing their way across a mud entrenched football field. Each one losing a blossoms slipper down engulfed in the mire. Smiling And the crowd is watching, waiting for Titania herself to emerge Queen of popular elect. COURT: left to right: Merryn Rutledge, Judy Stratton, Jessica Schorr, Betsy Anthony, Marva Nesbit, Jody Trenary, Vi Grigg, Sally Phillips, Nancy Montanari. XXII XXIII I am, in every way, alone. The snow, isolates me and I am alone. I do not believe that it was by my choice only that I have this loneliness. But for every person there is a point of segregation, a field of snow enveloping each of us. Painfully, I am alone and now I think that only by being so, could I be happy. X XXVI XXVII XXVIII 1 %, A XXIX XXXI XXXII Inhaling, exhaling powder backstage I rub into creases deodorant sprayed on my hands grimace in a mirror Now, now, inhale, exhale stepping on a slippery stage greenandblueandyellowandwhite orbs of light in my eyes. Exhale, gently, creating a description through action. XXXIII Jessica Schorr ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT Mary Sanford Normand Cloutier Merryn Rutledge Susan Heumann Bob Fish McConnaughey Mara Cherkasky XXXVI Loretta Cronan Lynn Santoroski Lucy From a country far south she has come up far north On an odyssey, noting the changes and similars Of one to the other, lands, people, and faiths. To promote understanding is the name of her goal And we do understand through her laughter and maxims Her wide-eyes and finger-wags and oo-oohs and ahs That people are people wherever you go (And Lucy Is one of the best ones we know.) XXXVII Now you can truly say that you are the best. You have received a due accolade and they have cheered you. This is the high point of your existence or perhaps it is merely one high point among others. This is the result of a lifetime of striving or perhaps it is the result of a few hours of fooling around. But you are still the topmost the foremost the utmost everyone will greet you as such whether you merit it or no. Congratulations! XXXVII ADMINISTRATION Eugene R. CCXXVI SIXTY-SEVEN-SIXTY-EIGHT: A HISTORY Sixty-seven—sixty-eight: a year of promises for the future, regrets for the simple past; a year of tradition and innovation, normality and abnormality; a year when eighth graders became high schoolers and seniors looked toward college—or the war; a year of meet discipline and due reward; a year containing the auspicious birth of Bruce Ricks Taylor and the sad death of Brenda Duncan; a year of flower power and sunshine and snow days and victories; a year of freshman eagerness and senior slump; a year of Groveton. The Look The trays still sat on the cafeteria tables; the temporary buildings still sat in the parking lot. It seemed a fair exchange: the extra work for the staff for the wretched heating systems outside. How¬ ever, third station was renovated in the spring as a slight physical improvement of the school. A heat¬ ing system was installed, the wire mesh around the rear walls replaced by cinder blocks, and a wall broken down to enlarge the gym facility. Discipline In a rare showing of power, the adminis¬ tration asserted itself in an enforcement of regu¬ lations this year. Dance rules were reviewed in Novem¬ ber and put into practice to prevent rowdy behavior. Later, the smoking rules were re-emphasized and en¬ forced: when teachers gave up their lounging (and smoking) time to patrol the bathrooms the atmosphere finally returned to a breathable state. (Smoking forums were held but poorly attended; there was no alternative found.) A new absentee pass system created congestion in the office every morning but reduced cutting. To discuss the new and enforced rules, Mr. Taylor set up a faculty-student committee representing the faculty and a cross-section of the student body. Perhaps the only permissive act by the administration all year, the issuance of senior honor cards was as lauded as its privileges were abused. Honor cards enabled seniors to charge items at the bookstore, go to the library or in the halls without a pass, and write their own absentee passes: simplifying cutting for those to whom honor is just another word. S.C.A. Two Student Cooperative Association projects succeeded this year in spite of the lack of support from the student body. In October the annual maga¬ zine drive garnered ten thousand dollars, of which the school received a profit of 3,625 dollars. (As always, it was necessary to appeal to human greed to reach such a goal with the incentive of a multitude of prizes.) The money was used to buy a stereo set for the cafeteria and to finance various clubs a nd organizations in need of money. Later, six Groveton students traveled to Marietta, Ohio, in the interest of learning more about school life elsewhere in the country. The exchangers, Jim Armstrong, Merryn Rutledge, Howard Wallace, Gretchen Engquist, Eric Hemmendinger, and Naomi Medvin, gave a panel discussion on the trip for the benefit of the student body. They commented on the friendliness of the students in Marietta. Later in February, seven students from Marietta visited Grove¬ ton. Time was spent attending classes, sight-seeing and getting acquainted. In comparing the two schools they found the classes here much less rigid than theirs, with more class participation. Next year ' s S.C.A. officers were elected in March. As another expression of general apathy, three of the offices went uncontested. Another was gained by a write-in vote. Winners were: President—David West Vice President—Felix Rogin Secretary—Gretchen Engquist Treasurer—David Kreutzer Reporter—Stephen Kolzak Sports If the Senators won the World Series this year, it would hardly be more surprising than the 1967 Tiger football team, which, having won a total of two games in two years (one by default), captured seven this year, dropping only two and tying one. This is the best record in Groveton ' s history. In recognition of the feat, Coach Carter was named District Coach of the Year. Also a first, the Tigers won a Homecom¬ ing game, downing Falls Church 31-14. During a wet halftime, Janie Lassiter was crowned Queen. Psy¬ chedelia reigned the next night, with couples dancing amid the colors of a light show and to the rhythm of The U.S. Mail. In winter sports, the Tiger teams were equally success¬ ful. The varsity basketball team finished second in the district with an 8-2 record. Tom Miller and Randy Barnett both made the al 1-District teams, while Randy earned a spot on the Regional team. The Groveton CCXXVII grapplers finished at 8-4, and sent Dino Gordon, captain Gene Reid, and Charles Bish to state. Finally, with its third loss in four years, the girls ' basketball team finished tied for the top at 11-1. Powderpuff Annually female members of Groveton let out their animal natures on each other, while the boys satisfy a basic clowning instinct in that monumental mix-up, the Powderpuff football game. This year was no exception. Girls legally fought each other tooth and nail, as hairy-legged cheerleaders with built-up busts waved them on with pom-poms. (The Juniors beat the aging Seniors 6-0.) Awards In March, the band topped all others in the district when it received superior ratings on all entries from the judges in the District Instrumental Music Festival. The newspaper received a first place rating at the March Columbia Scholastic Press Association con¬ vention in New York. At the state convention of the Vocational and In¬ dustrial Clubs of America, Groveton took second place in Honor Clubs. The following students were awarded: Public Speaking—Candy Monteith, Second Occupational Display—Dallas Hovatter, Third Talent—Ricky Latham, Second The club as a whole placed first in both the district and regional competitions. In the district forensic meet in April, Mary Sanford placed third in spelling and Jennifer Leonard placed first in poetry reading. The math team finished fourth in the county. The debate team finished with a winning season. Cheryl Hellner was named first place speaker in a five school Gunston District debate. The Optimist Award went to senior Bill Williams this year. Another senior, Dinah Smith, was the recipient of the D.A.R. Award, while John Kreutzer was honored with the S.A.R. Award. Senior Barbara Thomas quali¬ fied as a finalist in the National Achievement Scholar¬ ship Program, one for qualified Negro high school students. Jessie Schorr won the Betty Crocker Award as well as being a finalist in the Merit Scholarship Program along with Bob McConnaughey. Sports awards for this year were: Football Varsity Outstanding—Sam Handy Improved—Bill Croisetiere Sportsmanship—George Reid Junior Varsity Sportsmanship—Robert File Freshman Sportsmanship—Walter Anderson Hockey Varsity Outstanding—Kathy Ellis Sportsmanship—Barbara Thomas Junior Varsity Sportsmanship—Ann Stephens Basketball Varsity Outstanding—Tom Miller Sportsmanship—Doug Whitmer Junior Varsity Sportsmanship—John Smith Freshman Sportsmanship—Don Witten Girls ' Basketball Varsity Outstanding—Kathy Ellis Sportsmanship—Susie Brubaker Junior Varsity Sportsmanship—Kay Dodge Wrestling Varsity Outstanding—George Reid Sportsmanship—Dino Gordon Junior Varsity Sportsmanship—Roy Ginsberg Freshman Sportsmanship—Andy Hawks Cross-Country Sportsmanship—Robert Bramm Curriculum This year the English Department insti- stuted a valuable new program whic h supplemented the normal studies of certain college-bound classes. In the Humanities Enrichment Program, students studied the classical and cultural histories of different countries, using movies and lectures to accompany reading. Hopefully this will not be limited to such a few students in years to come. S.P.T.A. New life was breathed into the revived or¬ ganization for a while; students came in hordes to the panel discussions on Taking the Stress Off Grades and Drugs and Sex , but since no pat answers could be given by the adults to suit them, did not attend the down-to-earth meetings like the one on the Groveton-Bryant conversion. CCXXVIII Power of Suggestion In March, the striking District faculties led many students to hope that Fairfax County teachers would also strike to make the school board meet their demands. Unfortunately, the matter was settled peaceably, with the Board of Supervisors agreeing to a $6400 pay base. (The maximum salary in Prince Edward County was only $6500 at the time.) Student Teachers As their mentors leaned back and smoked, lazily beaming approval, five area college students learned teaching from the lecturing to the dirty work during a stay at Groveton the third nine weeks. Misses Bonnie Kelley, Susanne Oest, Clemence Descheemaeker, Cheryl Parkins, and Clara Jean Say¬ ers helped out in the social studies, language, and English departments, adding a needed touch of fresh¬ ness, if not the experience of years, to the curriculum. Loss Mr. Taylor ' s secretary, Mrs. Dorothy Williams, left in February to become Administrative Secretary to Mr. Robert Phipps, area administrator; her replace¬ ment was Mrs. Jean Phillips. Another change in the office was the r eplacement of Mrs. Freda Schmidt, who moved to the library, by Mrs. Ferebee Lewis as Student Control Secretary. Safety Week Wails of a bereaved mother and films of bad crashes served to shock the student body for perhaps the length of one assembly: Groveton ' s subse¬ quent record showed its impermanence. Perhaps the only safe drivers to come out of Safety Week were Dinah Smith and Tom Boone, who proved themselves true drivers in the Safe Driver Roadeo. Unfortunately, the Back-Seat Driver ' s Licenes and Date-Approved Driving Stickers controverted human nature in many cases, and probably somewhere a sticker was peeled off the bumper of a smashed car waiting to become scrap metal. Drama Significantly, the first presentation of the drama department was an ancient but most appli¬ cable anti-war drama, Euripides ' Trojan Women , presented by the advanced class in October. Both other productions took place in the Victorian Era, Oscar Wilde ' s farce The Importance of Being Earnest , pre¬ sented February 1st and 3rd, and Abbott and Loesser ' s musical Where ' s Charley? , May 9th and 10th. Television Groveton students were nervous participants on both ends of question-answer shows this year. On Youth Wants to Know , Senator Harrison Williams (D.-N. J.) left the Groveton panelists in the dark about Vietnam as he parried questions on the subject, but disposed neatly of domestic problems. On March 1 6th, Groveton was represented on the quiz show It ' s Academic by Joy Da Silveira (Captain), Mark Platt, and Jennifer Leonard. It was a close match, but Groveton was too slow on the buzzer in the last round and lost with 200 points to Laurel (220 points) and West Springfield (270 points). Scholar President Kennedy ' s assassination was the re¬ sult of a conspiracy. The presidential election of 1860 was one of the worst tragedies in the history of the United States. These unusual opinions belong to Pro¬ fessor Carroll Quigley of the Georgetown School of Foreign Affairs, who visited Groveton in March as part of Fairfax County ' s new Visiting Scholar Program. Versed on almost every phase of history, he spoke to a mass assembly of History and government students on the Cold War, later to individual subject groups on current topics of study. Superlatives Groveton students this year were not unaware of the world. There were early McCarthy buttons; representatives from Groveton at the peace march on the Pentagon; and discussions about the peace negotiations. Closer to home was anxiety about the impending annexation by Alexandria and the re¬ sults of the violent slaying of the non-violent Martin Luther King. Yet Groveton was accorded two super¬ latives this year: the highest percentage accident and drop-out rates in Fairfax County. In the protests against the way the world is run, idealistic youth fails too often to realize that before it is accorded re¬ sponsibility to run the world it must not abuse the responsibility of running itself.
