With President Kennedy heavily stressing physical fitness in the American youth, our girls get in the swing, or should we say stretch, of things by doing their exercises. Phys. Ed. Strengthens Bodies Physical fitness is very important to the health and well-being of students and good health is very important to one's success in school work. Thus, the school works to promote physical fitness through its program of physical education. ln both the girls' and boys' physical education classes, the periods were filled with much activity. The girls played such games as volleyball and basketball and softball when the weather permitted. During their physical education class, the boys took part in a variety of activities including soccer, wrestling, tumbling, basketball, baseball, and track. Games such as volleyball also constitute an im- portant part of Grover- town's physical educa- tion program. 18 tl

Sewing, a valuable skill, is one of the basic sub- jects taught in the home economics course. We Learn by Doing Through the course of home economics, high school girls learn many skills which will help them in the future to be good wives and mothers. Under the guidance of their home economics teacher, the girls studied nutrition, meal planning, cooking, sewing, and home nursing. The boys also gain vocational training as they learn the skills of carpentry through the shop course. After learning these basic fundamentals of shopwork, each student must build an article by himself be- fore the school year is over. 17 In shop class the basic fundamentals of carpentry work are learned while the boys make useful articles for their home.
