Science and Math In the modern world of today, science plays a leading role. With rockets to launch, atomic energy to harness, and new medicines to discover, this era has fast become an age of science and scientists. In the classroom, science has not been neglected. Realizing its importance and vast potentialities in today's world, educators have stressed the study of science. From their first year of high school to their last year, students have the opportunity to increase their knowledge of science as they advance from the study of general sciences to the more difficult study of chemistry or physics. The science courses available in high school give students a basic foundation in the advanced sci- ence courses found in higher education. ln biology, students make a study of plant and animal life. Such projects as dissecting help the student to learn by observation about the various animals under study. The general science course prepares students for the study of physics and chemistry. In physics, students study such things as motion, energy, and electricity. Physics experiments help to clarify in- formation. Chemistry students make a thorough study of the elements and their compounds and through lab experiments, they learn the importance of observation in scientific work. 12

,.-,,,n., ,,--- Challenge Students From the early days of civilization when geometric figures were sketched in Egyptian sands, to the present days of the 20th century, mathematics has been an invaluable aid to mankind. It has contributed and continues to contribute to the development of the world about us. Mathematics is a science--a science of numbers and spaces. Through mathematics, students learn to think clearly and to use sound reasoning, as well as to exercise carefulness and thoroughness in solving problems. The high school mathematics course is a study of several different, yet related, phases of mathe- matics. A course in general mathematics drilled students in the basic arithmetic skills which are so often used in advanced math as well as in everyday life. Through algebra, mathematic students learned how to work with positive and negative numbers, solve for the unknown quantity, and work with in- equalities. In plane and solid geometry, students made a study of lines, planes, and solids as they worked to master the theorems and proofs of geometry. In advanced mathematics, trigonometry challenged stu- dents with the understanding and solution of the functions of triangles. 13
