Mrs. Freed and Mrs. Barbknecht offered service with a smile as they attended to the needs of the student body. Spending many hours in the kitchens were the cooks who planned and cooked meals that would keep us healthy and happy. The janitors were likewise kept busy as they worked to keep the schools clean and in good repair. And transporting us to and from school and basketball games safely were the bus drivers. With rockets to launch, atomic energy to harness, and new medicines to discover, this era has fast become an age of science and scientists. In the classroom, science has not been neglected. Realizing its importance and vast potentialities in today's world, educators have stressed the study of science. From their first year of high school to their last year, students have the opportunity to increase their knowledge of science as they advance from the study of general sciences to the more difficult study of chemistry or physics. The science courses available in high school give students a basic foundation in the advanced sci- ence courses found in higher education. ln biology, students make a study of plant and animal life. Such projects as dissecting help the student to learn by observation about the various animals under study. The general science course prepares students for the study of physics and chemistry. In physics, students study such things as motion, energy, and electricity. Physics experiments help to clarify in- formation. Chemistry students make a thorough study of the elements and their compounds and through lab experiments, they learn the importance of observation in scientific work. 12 ,.-,,,n., ,,--- Challenge Students From the early days of civilization when geometric figures were sketched in Egyptian sands, to the present days of the 20th century, mathematics has been an invaluable aid to mankind. It has contributed and continues to contribute to the development of the world about us. Mathematics is a science--a science of numbers and spaces. Through mathematics, students learn to think clearly and to use sound reasoning, as well as to exercise carefulness and thoroughness in solving problems. The high school mathematics course is a study of several different, yet related, phases of mathe- matics. A course in general mathematics drilled students in the basic arithmetic skills which are so often used in advanced math as well as in everyday life. Through algebra, mathematic students learned how to work with positive and negative numbers, solve for the unknown quantity, and work with in- equalities. In plane and solid geometry, students made a study of lines, planes, and solids as they worked to master the theorems and proofs of geometry. In advanced mathematics, trigonometry challenged stu- dents with the understanding and solution of the functions of triangles. 13 Our World - Past and Present Using sample ballots, the high school students took part in a mock election held by the government class. The study of history is a study of civilization--a study of the past and of the present. Through the social studies--history, government, and their related topics--students learn of the world of past civilizations and of the world of today. Ranging from such topics as ancient war methods to present day revenues, the Social Studies course covers many varying phases of history. Students of world history studied not only the ancient history of early civilization, but also the progress and development of foreign countries. Through the courses of United States history and government, students learned of the historical background of our country's growth and of the system of feder- alism which governs it. Such subjects as economics and sociology offered instruction to students in the field of the business and social affairs of the world. 14 The business world is an ever expanding field with many fine opportunities for those trained in the skills of commerce. Today, stu- dents have the opportunity to master these skills through the business education courses offered in high school. The business course includes the subjects of typing, bookkeeping, and shorthand. Students are trained and drilled in these skills as they strive to master them. Such training as this will not only help students to find employment in the business world after graduation, but may also help them to attain part time employ- ment during their high school years. .. The symbols which once baffled shorthand students become familiar with mastery of the subject. Our World Is Business wi? 15 English students often find that they must use the li- brary facilities for such projects as compositions and reference work. a '4' Language s Communication English, which is a required subject, teaches many skills. Students are drilled in grammar, vocabu- lary, writing, and reading. They learn to not only speak correctly, but to put their thoughts on paper as they learn the techniques of composition. Another important part of the English course--Literature-- gives the student an opportunity to increase his knowledge as he studies such writings as essays, prose, and novels. Latina habitat hodie --Latin lives today. In professions, in other languages, and in the classroom, the value of the Latin language has become very evident. Latin students, while they are studying one of the greatest cultures the world has ever produced, are learning a language which is the basis for many other languages--a language which will always be an asset to them in life. One of the things required of Latin I students is to make a poster. Here we see several students re- touching some of these posters. 16 Sewing, a valuable skill, is one of the basic sub- jects taught in the home economics course. We Learn by Doing Through the course of home economics, high school girls learn many skills which will help them in the future to be good wives and mothers. Under the guidance of their home economics teacher, the girls studied nutrition, meal planning, cooking, sewing, and home nursing. The boys also gain vocational training as they learn the skills of carpentry through the shop course. After learning these basic fundamentals of shopwork, each student must build an article by himself be- fore the school year is over. 17 In shop class the basic fundamentals of carpentry work are learned while the boys make useful articles for their home. With President Kennedy heavily stressing physical fitness in the American youth, our girls get in the swing, or should we say stretch, of things by doing their exercises. Phys. Ed. Strengthens Bodies Physical fitness is very important to the health and well-being of students and good health is very important to one's success in school work. Thus, the school works to promote physical fitness through its program of physical education. ln both the girls' and boys' physical education classes, the periods were filled with much activity. The girls played such games as volleyball and basketball and softball when the weather permitted. During their physical education class, the boys took part in a variety of activities including soccer, wrestling, tumbling, basketball, baseball, and track. Games such as volleyball also constitute an im- portant part of Grover- town's physical educa- tion program. 18 tl SENIORS CLASS HISTORY The Grovertomm I-hgh School class of 1963 began 1ts 12 year Journey rn Septem ber of 1951 Thrrteen of those or1g1nal 41 enthusrastrc frrst graders rernarn to grad uate 1n 1963 They are Madge Allen Sally Awald, Judy Clark Jlm Cleveland Beverly Haley Margo Jack, Larry Justrce Georgra Keller Dons Kuchel, Lo1s Ser der George Srngleton, Lmda Stanley and Orvre Ward Mrs Becker and Mrs Glant gurded us through the frrst grade of school Joe Jaeger, Laura Jo Thornburg, and Don Coldeberg jorned our happy group 1n the second grade Our th1rd grade teach er entertarned us at her home when we were rn her class In 1954 we moved to the new grade school burldmg where our fourth year ln school was completed Our teacher mvrted us to her home agarn that year where we spent a sunny day explor 1ng her farm In the frfth grade we went on our frrst two class part1es Mrs Nelson took us to the Brookfreld Zoo and the Rochester skatrng rrnk that year The follow mg year Mrs Taylor took her 25 cheerful srxth graders on a tour of the Museum of Scrence and Industry and the Museum of Hlstory and on therr second roller skat1ng party In the seventh grade, our class attended a hayrrde at Judy Clark's home durmg w1nter's frrst snowfall Our last year rn grammar school was a busy one for all of us We spent our two class partres at the show rn South Bend and at the skat mg rmk rn Rochester We left on our erghth grade tr1p on March 27, 1959, and spent three days tourlng Southern Indxana Twenty two ambrtlous Freshres entered hrgh school rn the fall of 1959 That year we enjoyed a skatmg and show party and spent a Sunday at the lnd1ana Dunes State Park Our Sophomore year brought a new student to our forces, Carolme Stachulak We went roller skatmg that year and ended our second year rn hrgh school wrth a day at the dunes Our last two years rn hrgh school have been our very busrest Barbara Duron en rolled 1n our class early m our Jun1or year We spent the entrre year workmg to earn our Prom and Semor tr1p money We began our campargn 1n September of 1961 w1th magazxne and Chrrstmas card sales We sold concessrons at all home games and also raffled cakes and turkeys We held a bake sale on Aprrl 28 W presented our frrst class play Keep Movrng to the commun1ty on March 23 and 24 Then came the hrghhght of our Junror year We honored the Semors of 1962 wrth a beautlful prom, Fantasy of the Sea, on May 12, 1962, at the LaPorte Arnerrcan Legron Hall Our Semor year was spent Just as busy as our Junror year Rrck Maze and An1ta Spencer Jolned our class, bnngmg our fmal attendance to twenty Annual work began early rn September of 1962 We staged our Sen1or play 'It s a Great Lrfe on October 12 and 13 Our sponsor Mr Nye mvxted us to hrs home for a funfrlled evenmg of carol1ng and partymg to celebrate our Chnstmas season Our Sen1or frsh fry was held the frrst of March Our beautrful Baccalaureate servlce was held on May 19, 1963 We have many fme memorres of our graduatron mght, May 24, 1963 We happrly recall our pro cess1on down the arsle to the 1nsp1r1ng stram of Pomp and C1rcumstnce, the dear frlends and relatrves there to w1sh us well the frrends and classmates of our school days, and the happy moment when we each recerved the drploxna that rep resented our goal achxeved Twenty proud Grovertown graduates left on therr seven day Seruor Trrp on May 26, 1963, to the Northeastern states, the future but a few steps away , - ' I D P 7 3 7 - , , . . . , - 7 3 . . e 7 I . . BOTTOM ROW: Jerry Pearish, Don Daily, Dale Rosander, Rick Maze, and Joe Jaeger. The Grover Varsity, under the guidance of Coach Jerry Seese and Assistant coach, Melvin Watson, scored a 500 record as the 1962-63 basketball season came to a close. The Rams, who opened the season with a 51 -41 victory over Medaryville, played a total of 16 scheduled games. In the tourney play, the Varsity defeated West High 57-40 to play in the finals of the Holiday Tourney. The Rams also participated in the T.V.A.C. Tourney and the Sectional. 38 with Spirit and Teamwork Randy Bob R Jerry School Spirit Runs High The Varsity Cheerleaders and the Pep Club were a very important part of each Grover basketball game as they gave encouragement and moral support to our fighting Rams. The cheerleaders--Georgia Keller, Pam Dye, and Sue Klinedinst--spent many hours practicing yells and im- provising new cheers. Gige, Pam, and Sue choose cheer- leading outfits of circular skirts and matching crew-neck sweaters, with Gige in gold and Pam and Sue in white. Pep, enthusiasm, and school spirit were the key words of the Pep Club. Under the supervision of Mrs. Rosalie Reid and the direction of the cheerleaders, the Pep Club-- sporting new bright green vests--cheered our Rams on to victory. The Choir, an increasingly popular musical organization, has made much progress this year. With an improved tone quality and an array of new music the Choir has put on many fine performances including their participation in the County Choral Festival. The High School Band, with a full schedule for the year, set to work at once. Marching techniques were drilled, new music was rehearsed, and pro- grams were assembled. In October the Band participated in the Manchester College Band Day and soon after began rehearsals for the basketball season's band shows. Among other performances, the Band gave a fall and spring con- cert and went to the band contest. The Junior and Beginning Bands have been kept very busy as they worked to improve their playing techniques and to master new music. Choir 48 013043, cf!!!
