An elephant, a rhino, a water buffalo, just for luck. Exciting? Oi course, but so is life. Expensive? Not if you know how to organize your team! Ilaven't we all been on a safari for the past four years, in search of elusive things we call the curriculum? Havent we trained our rifles on a sure shot only to find a slight red mark instead ol' a hundred per cent kill? Yes, we have been on a safari trying to shoot, lasso, corral or just plain knock out the trophies, the possession of which indicates we have acquired an education, that we have decorated the den of our lives with the best and most precious elements ol' life, the trophies that constitute the American heritage. No one who has been on a safari ever forgets his experience. Nor shall we. Until the last sun sets and the shadows of eternal night that precede the breala ' J - - - w N oi the eternal day settle o er us, the experiences gained in the Grover Cleveland Safari will ever he with us to spur on in our successes and comfort us in our adversities. Her sincere interest in Cleveland's girls has brought forth few rewards except the satisfaction she has received in helping the girls I-ind themselves and their places in Grover Cleveland. Through her guidance, she has tried to show them how to think clearly when diiiiculties arise. Many girls have realized their mistakes and have, consequently, been able to adjust themselves toward a new and brighter future. For twenty-three years, Miss Fink has been Dean of Girls here. Since she was the first dean of Grover Cleveland, coming here when the school opened, Miss Fink has grown with the school and felt the joys and tribulations of a new and prosperous public institution. In appreciation of your ardent work, Miss Fink, we would like to thank you and acknowledge our deep regret for your retirement. Nevertheless, your instilled spirit will remain and it will help Grover Cleveland High School to continue upholding the reputa- tion which you helped to achieve. This year we were proud to present a BELL 8: HOWELL projector for use in the auditorium. Our aim has been to cooperate with Dr. Tonsor and the Faculty at all times. We all experienced a feeling of awe in the presence of that huge and terribly mature being, the SENIOR! The ringing of the period bell seemed to us like a signal turning a comparatively decorous student body into a herd of wildly stampeding cattle. Seemingly without our will, we would be swept into the most remote cubby holes. A momentous occasion was seeing our first of the school's productions, Countess Maritzaf' We were amazed to see our auditorium changed into a lighted theater and our schoolmates become accomplished actors. Yet time passed very quickly and before most of us realized, we had become Sophomores. We became increasingly interested in school activities and seemed to discover a whole new world of enjoyment after school. So it was with much enthusiasm that when the time came for the school's next production, Brigadoon, we found ourselves participating in, as well as enjoying it. What great pleasure we got out of seeing our classmates perform, for we saw them as Barrymore, Bern- hardt, and Lawrence! From Sophomore to Junior, the time seemed to ily by! But oh, how much living we managed to Ht into that year, not only were there very many happy moments but also some unpleasant ones, for we sometimes had to learn the hard way! Finally we emerged as Iuniors, individuals much more poised and restrained than before but not yet what most people call adult The show that year was Finian's Rainbow. The haunting strains of melo- dies like Old Devil Moon remained with us for quite a while. With us always during that time was a hope for tomorrow and the exalted position of SENIOR! The time finally arrived, and as we think back we cannot forget the very many hours of studying for exams we did, especially for regents, and afterwards the worry and anxiety we felt, waiting for the results. We had survived through all these tests, through the worries of removing N's and getting dental notes in, and we came forth, stamped with approval - Seniors! We were caught in the hub-bub of pins, hats, yearbook and all the exciting things that happen to Seniors. All of our time at School was not spent in worrying over exams, how- ever, our lives were full of the many trivial fond records that are a part of every young girl's and boy's life, all the little things that made life a continuous adven- ture. Besides the shows, some of us played on teams and at the Amateur Contest we were always sure to have a good time. ITUQS The religious club for the Protestant students is the Martin Luther Club. The club was made up mostly of a younger group this year. However, the president is Senior Florence Climento. Many interesting speakers have been invited to various meetings this year. Among the topics covered were Martin Luther, The World Council of Churches, and the importance of religion to the youth of today. Other meetings featured bible quizzes, music, and a Christmas program. The supervisor is Mrs. Wiegand. The Menorah Club, Cleveland's religious group for Jewish students, has as its teacher-in-charge, Mrs. Lewin. At several meetings this year the club had speakers on current events, as they affect the newest democracy in the Near East, lsrael. Ethics and religion have been discussed at other meetings with a rabbi acting as moderator. The members have also viewed films on Judaism and the state of Israel. The members feel it is a rewarding experience to take part in the interesting activities provided by the club. The Senior members are Walter Grau CPresident,D Seena Dictenberg, Gene Weiss, Paul Taub, Neale Stock, and Marvin Grossman. The Newman Club, the religious organization for the Catholic students, tries to instill in its members the school's motto, Pro Deo Et Patriaf' The main event for the fall term was the annual Communion Breakfast. As usual, it was a huge success. lt was attended by 250 pupils and many teachers. The club's faculty advisers are Mrs. Cooney, Miss Smith and Dr. Manz. Many interesting meetings were had during the year. President is john Gemma. Vice-President is Nicholas Ugenti. The Cleveland Playshop is headed by Miss Leahy, Mrs. Fontana and Mr. Curran. Playshop tries to further interest in the theater and also aims to develop acting techniques in its members. In October, a model meeting was presented in the auditorium, which was under Mr. Curran's direction. It included some of the term's highlight performances. This was presented again on Parents' Night. As a Christmas production it offered Silent Night, the story of Franz Gruber. The Senior members are Caroline Budronis, Carole Kopsay, Seena Dictenberg CPresident,D Sylvia Kiener, Bill Schirmer, and Ida Mary Wray. The Spanish Club is conducted by Mrs. Gallagher. Besides discussing the customs of our Latin-American neighbors at meetings, the members sometimes spend a Saturday afternoon viewing a Spanish movie and afterwards enjoy a delicious Spanish meal. At every meeting there is always some time devoted to playing Spanish records. President is Gene Weiss. 61 The Circolo Dante Alighieri, otherwise known as the Italian Club, is under the alternate supervision of Mrs. Riccardi and Miss Milone. The main goal of the club is toigive its members some idea of the numerous contributions of Italy to the world of culture. Two programs this year consisted of Italian music, both modern and traditional, with community singing. Another meeting was devoted to an educational quiz with audience participation. The fall term's activi- ties were ended with a huge pizza party. The aim of the Latin Cluh is to further interest in the language and appreci- ate the bearing that the language has upon modern day life. The Senior officers of the club are Eleanor Binnebosel CFirst Consul,D Gail McPartland CScriba,D and Elizabeth Gross CCensorD. The club director is Miss Light. Programs this year include contests, debates, and singing of Latin songs. Der Deutsche ,lugendri-ng, or German Club, which aims to arouse interest in the German language and the German people, is directed by Mrs. Wehrmann, Mrs. Pappel and Mrs. Zuker. It had numerous activities this year. The members saw German movies, took long hikes, played German games, learned folk dances and viewed slides of Germany. The club also held its annual party. This year the club was proud to have many Senior members. The Do-Re-Mi Cluh, whose faculty adviser is Miss O'Connor, is quite social-minded. It has a party when it is each member's birthday. Also this year a trip to hear a concert at Town Hall was staged. Members are interested in all musical programs, both on radio and on television. The Poster Cluh is under the supervision of Miss Martin. Evidences of the club's work can be seen all over the school. This club furnishes all the signs for the school. It makes the posters at Easter and at Christmas to decorate the halls, the cafeteria and the oflices. It also makes other signs to advertise all school projects such as basketball games and dances. The members also compete for prizes in various poster contests. The junior Red Cross Cluh is headed by Mrs. Wiegand. The motto of the club is, Action. The club stresses active participation in helping others. Besides stimulating brotherhood and understanding among the members, a lot of fine work is done. The director of The Theodore Roosevelt Cluh is Dr. Ryan. The objectives of the club are to promote high ideals, to stress the Golden Rule, to train youth for leadership, to become active, good citizens and to train the members in the fine art of debate and public speaking. A medallion is awarded at graduation to the boy or girl who achieves high scholarship, outstanding school service and high character marks. 62 Tlze Town Meeting Club, under the able leadership of Mrs. Paul, has engaged in two major projects this year. The first is participation in the Queens Boroughwide Discussion on the issues of the November election. The other one is participation in a city-wide U.N. project in which students from all the city's schools have panel discussions on underdeveloped areas, the cold war and other topics of equal importance. The Lex Club, under the supervision of Mr. Soltolofif, devotes its time to the discussion and evaluation of different phases of law. It has presented an assembly program dealing with the laws learned in a Commercial Law class. This club endeavors to teach its members how to think clearly and concretely. It hopes to teach them how to avoid unnecessary litigations. It also attempts to convey to the members a proper code of ethics in social and business relation- ships. W. II, captured the city PSAL Championship. They boast a 26 game winning streak, not having been beaten since 1952 and their mark this season was 13 wins, no losses. Individual honors were gained by Bubi Herink and Lou Karbeiner, both named to the All City team. Ed Rogers set a team record, scoring in 20 consecutive games before being stopped by Jamaica. The Indians captured the Queens title when they rolled over highly touted Forest Hills 4-0. Strong competition was then encountered in the playoffs. A determined Compers team was edged 1-0 in a hard fought, closely contested battle in the semi-finals. On rain soaked Madison field the Indians met and vanquished Lafayette High, again by a 1-0 count. Bubi Herink's fifteen yard boot, midway in the second half, returned the coveted championship trophy to Dr. Tonsor's office. It was a team effort all the way and being missed next season will be, Lou Karbeiner, Ed Rogers, Pete Bender, Ted Jaeger, Werner Lackner, and George Faeth. But as always Mr. Singer can be counted on to come up with another great team, one that will be strong contenders for a third straight crown. Special tribute should be awarded this coach, who, by his skillful guidance down through the years, has made soccer synonymous with Grover Cleveland. BASEBALL Baseball has been one of Cleveland's fortes on the field of athletic endeavor. The ball team is usually at least a strong contender for divisional honors and haiilone what no other school has, won the City Championship two years in succ ssion in 1945 and '46. Last year was somewhat of an exception, however. They badly felt the loss of such stars as Dicky Pray and Ed Mathes, now minor leaguers, and had a mediocre 6-won 6-lost record. This did earn them third place, though. Many of last year's team are back and, with a season tucked away, should again place Cleveland in a contending position. After this spring, Mr. Denzer will have to replace seniors Pete Lutus, Jack Prendergast, Jimmy O'Kane, Bobby Iacullo, Mortie Weinberg, John Schnaufer, and Bon Jasinsky. BASKETBALL Mr. Stone's second year at the helm has been one of the most successful a Cleveland quintet has known in recent years. With one game remaining, they are in third place with an 8-5 league mark. A playoff berth, from which they are now eliminated, was seen at the beginning of the season, as the Indians captured their first three league encoun- ters, beating Edison 68-44, Bayside 57-55, and Long Island City 47-43. But they then cooled off and dropped three straight: to Newtown 77-67, Forest Hills 60-50, and league champion Bryant 62-52. They have been running hot and cold ever since, topping Flushing 54-39, Edison 67-38, dropping a 62-52 en- counter with Bayside, then beating Newtown 68-56 and Long Island City 66-62 wand dropping another contest to Bryant 56-53. In their last game to date, they avenged an earlier setback by topping Forest Hills 75-68. I Only one man, Pray Paprocky, will be missed next season, but losing Paprocky, second high scorer in Queens, will leave a hiatus coach Stone will find hard to fill. J' Km. Q X 1 ,. GOLF In its short three year history the golf team, under the excellent leadership of Mr. Boylan, has come a long way. A 5-won 4-lost record and fourth place in league standings made last year the most successful the team has had. Returning regulars from last year's team are Ron Cuthy, Ed Dannenhoffer, john Carpenter, and Neale Stock. The benefit of a year's experience gives confidence that a second straight winning season will be had. But all being seniors, coach Boylan will have to come up with virtually an entirely new varsity next spring. RIFLE Led by sharpshooter Larry Chrznowski, the nimrods against city wide competition tumed in a sparkling performance to capture fifth place in the All City Matches. Five wins and five losses gave them another fifth place in regular season competition. Mr. Wiegand hopes to find replacements for Willy Meng, who was lost this january, and Bob Clark a june graduate, in this February's tryouts. If re- placements can be found, with the rest of the team remaining intact, next fall's squad should be a victorious one. SWIMMING The nomination for hard luck team of the year goes to our mermen. While winning only two meets, they lost many tough decisions, either by dropping the final and deciding event, sometimes by as little as a fraction of a second, or by one scant point. Nevertheless, this is a team that boasts the first All-Queens swimmer that has come out of Cleveland in a number of years. 200 yd. free style specialist, Ioe Cronin, gained this distinction. Cronin and many other veterans will be on next season's squad that hopes to turn Dame Fortune's frown to a smile. But Mr. McArdle will have to replace graduates, Terry Furst, Karl Schmid, Joe Koestner, Ron Letwines, Ken Boschen and Walt Clifford. TENNIS Under the able guidance of Mr. Stone, Cleveland's tennis team enters into its second year of competition this spring. Last year, as could be expected, an inexperienced squad, playing a difficult game, fared badly, tying for last place with a 1-6 record. This season a more enviable record is expected with the entire squad returning. The more distant future holds out even brighter hopes, for this year again there will be no graduation losses. Next spring may see the once inexperienced Indian netmen turn into strong contenders. TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY The graduation of Ed McAllister saw Cleveland lose one of its all time great athletes. McAllister became the first Cleveland runner to win a city championship when he captured the 1954 PSAL mile. I-Ie was also Queens titleholder and set a new borough mile record of 4:31 in '54. A constant threat in the 1,000 yard event and a consistent cross country winner showed McAllister's versatility. The team as awhole hasn't fared too well, but with a crop of young run ners, who gained valuable experience this season, Mr. Hessel is confident of much strengthened all around team next fall, both on the cinders and in cros 'TF- ' 'ilu 4 is .1 fi country. He of course hopes for another McAllister to turn up. Here, many exciting tournament games are conducted by Mrs. Bruckner. Next, we observe Mrs. Schneck's Volley-Ball Club eagerly mastering the techniques and skills which they will apply in striving for first place in their respective tourneys. Not to be outdone, the Badminton Club, under Mrs. Driscoll's skillful direction, is conducting tournaments which produce triumphant winners. Under Miss O'Corman's instruction, Cleveland girls are iven ractical trainin in life-savin courses. 8 P 8 S Combine basketball, volleyball, badminton, and swimming clubs, add a dash of something else and we have Mrs. Driscoll's Leaders, one of the most popular clubs in Cleveland and yet the most difficult to join. These girls are competent enough to referee all athletic events and teach gym classes in the absence of an instructor. . Last, but b no means least, there are our wonderful m classes.
