Charles CK Q70 prlngtime o e Tulips, jonquils, narcissi, dailodilsl Spring is here and Natures spring festival spreads before our view. The purple grape hyacinths, the White, blue, red and gold of the Dutch hyacinths add to the gay display that unfolds before us. But what of ourselves? The years oi preparation, the winter of our discontent, is about over. Four years oi elltort unseen have brought us to blossom time. We go forth into the World beyond school and on the plat- form at graduation We resemble the colors ot the spring festival,-at least the girls in their beautiful White dresses, ii not the boys in their jaunty brown. What oi yourselves? Are you going to blossom for a spring festival of life? Gr is the blight of inditlerence, carelessness, laclc of initiative, selfishness going to scotch the blossom and turn the gay scene into a sham- bles? A spring festival it will be if at graduation you resolve that come what may, you are going to be an honest, courageous, thinlcing, hard Worlc- ing, energetic citizen. The average person talces the festival of spring for granted. ln his eyes, the bloom just happened. He does not see the silent, unheralded months of preparation which made the bloom possible. So, too, we are lilcely to view the success of some of our mates as a matter oi chance and forget the years ol hard worlc and preparation that lie behind that success. Remember The heights by great men reached and lcept, Vvere not attained by sudden Eight, But they while their companions slept Vvere toiling upward in the nightf, Spring iestivall A time of hope and anticipation. Spring iestivall A time of vivacity and color. May lite now become for you a spring festival. 'ZZAJJ Q f AX 6 R., , .. gg, A NNNK iw S .1-' x. Nathaniel Schwarzhurg pring c92stivaf As I looli ahout, at Grover Cleveland High, l see that spring has ar- rived once more in all its glory. Mother Nature has dressed the trees in their hrightest foliage ot the year and the ground surrounding the school is swathed in a velvety carpet ot green. Thinking haclc l realize the school has seen many springs and graduations and that much has happened since that first spring in 1932. Somehow, as I see Grover Cleveland High standing there looking so majestic and proud, it no longer appears as a cold, stone edifice, hut as a stalwart youth who has seen twenty hirthdays pass and is prepared to face on his twenty-tirst loirthday this ever changing world with a stronger courage, horn from experience. It can truly he said that war is the greatest teacher ot experience. ln the past twenty years the youth ot Grover Cleve- land have faced one Vvorld War and are now tacing the threat ot another in order to preserve the democracy their toretathers have estalolished. The graduate ot the spring class ot June, lQ52, can easily loe com- pared to a spring flower. After the immature seed ot the Hower has heen developed through naturets care, it is ready tor the world to gaze upon. The student who entered Cleveland, whether tour or twenty years ago, was also immature. Through social and cultural education he also devel- oped into a mature person. He, lilce the fully grown Hower, will he ready at last tor the world at hand. Grover Cleveland has sent countless numloers ot young men and women out into the world in the past twenty years, and now we, the class ot June, 1952, will tind ourselves among them. Some ot us will go out to earn a living at various johs, others will go on to a higher education, and still others will he entering the service ot our country. As we prepare to leave Grover Cleveland the somewhat sad realiza- tion comes to us that friends will go their separate ways and the happy times we spent together will loe no more. But, even though old friendships will he hrolcen up, they will again come to lite as we, in later years, turn the pages of this hook. We lcnow that the memories ot our school will linger in our minds, and we all have reserved a cherished place in our hearts for our Alma Mater-Grover Cleveland High. ROSEMARY MAYERSICK '52 ll Qar en o emories The little Freshman loolced up at the large grey stone louilding. It was his first day in high school. He had loeen told all ahout the wonderful tour years oi fun and excitement he would spend here at Grover Cleveland, hut now all he could thinli of was how small he was and how hig the huilding was. He had never seen so many rooms in one huilding loeiore. There were so many offices-lVlr. lVlcCaiirey's office and Miss Finlfs and Dr. Tonsoris office, where a freshman might come to a sad end if he werenit careful. Soon the first unfamiliarity wore Ott, and the freshman adjusted himself to his new home. He learned to lceep his Freshmanis handhoolc neatly concealed and to act just lilce the seniors. There was a Freshman Rally, to malce him feel more at home, and when the Barn Dance came up, he and his classmates swamped it. Soon signs hegan to appear all over the school announcing the presentation of the HGypsy Baronf, an operetta. When he saw it, he thought it to he the finest he had ever seen. When we entered our second year at Cleveland, we had a feeling of sureness, of certainty, of determination. Our grade advisors guided us into the programs which we were to follow for our entire career at Cleve- land. For the first time we toolc that word HRegentsH seriously. We found new interests and new friends in the many extracurricular activities and cluhs. On short notice, the entire school went on its hest hehavior for a group of visitors from various out-of-town colleges and universities who had come to judge our school. At the end of this year, tallc loegan of a han on after-school activities. This affected us directly in our Junior year, when our extra-curricular activities were curtailed. Though there was some dis- turhance throughout the city in protest, our school calmly worlced through it all. Vvhen our cluhs and teams once more were worlcing, we were ready to talce our place as leaders in school activities. Our musical shows once more were heing produced. There was an Amateur Contest and a Valen- tine Dance. Qur teams, as usual, were leaders in the high school leagues. And then, we were Juniors. There was our last Barn Dance, the Amateur Contest, the celehration of Clevelandis twentieth anniversary, Junior Day, the traditional preview of the prom. And after three and a halt years we were finally Seniors. First the Senior recital, and then the hus ride to Bear Mountain: and waiting for the hats and pins to come liept us interested. Senior Day, with endless rih- hons of names and loest wishes, fancy hats and Sunday clothes for the Senior Day Dance. The climax came with the huying oi gowns and din- ner jaclcets, corsages and houtonnieres, for the Prom was here. Perhaps, after all, the hours we spent Uextra-curricularn will he hest rememhered. And what could sum up better the aims and traditions of Cleveland Cluhs than these lines from our Cleveland Hymn? Hflhide with us, ere tastes of day are o,er That work and play may hring their golden storef, The LATIN CLUB, ahly led hy Miss Light, has for years heen a strong- hold olj culture in G.C.l'l.S. By dehates and quizzes the hi-monthly meet- ings have given Latin Students greater insight into ancient Roman lite. This term Santo Buttafuoco and Margaret Whelan were consuls. A contemporary version was CIRCOLO DANTE, the ltalian Clulo. Un- der the sponsorship of Miss Milone and Mrs. Riccardi the clulo has eaten delicious pizza, listened to opera, and enjoyed ltalian movies. Senior pres- ident Canio Pavone has directed the cluh in musical and dramatic per- tormances. The GERMAN CLUB, directed hy Mrs. Zuclcer and prexy Elsie Knell was honored this term hy a visiting teacher from Germany. Formerly the cluh had corresponded with her and her class of children and were de- lighted when they found she was in this country on exchange. Her tallc was greatly enjoyed as were the many other activities of this cluh. LE CIRCLE FRANCAIS discusses the cultural aspects of French lite. This includes getting to lcnow French opera, movies, restaurants, and art hy actual experience. Mrs. Nagourney and Mrs. Gurin lead the cluh. One of the most popular girls, clulbs is the SWIMMING CLUB, directed hy Miss Qycvorman. This cluh has in former terms given us many aquatic spectacles and shows. This term, however, has heen given over to the teaching of Lite Saving. Seniors Adrienne Vulcina and Mildred Hellfner are officers. HO spur us on to reach our visions high .... H Mrs. Dulceshire, aided hy Joanne Peglow and Edith Kahn, leads the JUNIOR NURSES LEAGUE. This Weelily clulo encourages girls to investigate nursing as a possihle profession. Nurses from hospitals of the vicinity often lecture, and trips to clinics and hospitals are frequent. This cluh has 58 helped many girls to decide on a starched white cap as part oi their future. All future artists and those interested in art as a hohhy are found in the POSTER CLUB. This most active organization is under the direction of Miss Martin. Mary Klimelc and Tracy Seymour were the cluifs senior officers this term. They their hest to lieep the clulo interesting as well as husy. This art group should he given credit for the wonderful posters that it has created for the walls of our nohle school. Thanks a lot, future artists. We hope you are all great successes. The CLEVELAND PLAYSHOP under the direction of Mrs. Harr and Mrs. Ahearn has always loeen a must to those of us hitten hy the stage loug. Competitive auditions have made heing in this clulo an accomplishment as well as a pleasure. Prominent senior thespians are Rosemary Tedesco, Letitia Antonetti, John Gilleran, and Dorothea La Frieda. To those of us who are actively interested in good government, the T. ROOSEVELT CLUB, guided hy Dr. Ryan, offered great opportunity. Here, the ideals of that famous statesman are discussed. This all-senior clulo, led hy Julianne Lange and Hyacinth Culhane, visited the Roosevelt shrines in Manhattan and Oyster Bay as part of their program. Hlnstill in us a firm faith in ourselves .... H By movies, guest spealcers and trips to New Yorlc City churches, LUTHER CLUB has helped Protestant young people actively develop their faith. Another aim of this organization has loeen to further respect and ap- preciation of other religions. The clulo is sponsored hy Mrs. Vveigand and Dr. Lashley, with Roloerta Barth as president. The aim of MENORAH CLUB is to teach love and respect for Jewish traditions and culture. By ohservance of holidays, tallcs loy visiting ralohis, and even learning tollc dances this has heen successfully accomplished. Senior George Nemeth served as president under the guidance of Mrs. Lewin. The NEWMAN CLUB is an extremely active organization. Catholic stu- dents this term sponsored a dance, held a Mass tor Peace and Communion Brealcfast, hesides their other usual program. This includes furthering the Christopher Movement. Marion Clancy and Dorothy Tuclc helped Dr. Nlanz and Mrs. Cooney direct the cluh. ALFRED QUERFELD '52 otgsi atlzfetics SOCCER TEAM Year after year, our soccer team wins the Queens championship. They have won more than their share ot the city championships. Beyond any douht they are the most successful in the long run ot all our tine teams. Last year's team was made up mostly ot lower termers. They tailed hy a very slim margin to win the city championship. Next year we can expect even loetter teams from them. Mr. Singer continues to do his tine jolo in coaching the team. BASEBALL TEAM Grover Cleveland has always heen represented hy top hasehall teams. During the past tour years we have again had success. The cur- rent season has given promise of showing one ot the top teams in the schoolls history. Under Mr. Denzerss tine leadership, the hoys have learned to malce the hest use ot their natural ahilities. BASKETBALL TEAM Grover Clevelandls loaslcetloall team has met with only fair success in the past years. Last yearys team showed promise, hut it was not continu- ally successful. We have high hopes that in the tuture things will talce a turn for the hetter. Mr. lVlcArdle, long tamed tor his swimming team, is now the new loaslcetloall coach. TRACK TEAM During the past tour years the Grover Cleveland traclc teams have heen quite successful. Even in failure the hoys have learned to love their sport. Under Mr. Hesselys ahle leadership, the team was victorious in sev- eral individual events. The prospects tor the tuture are good despite the impending loss ot Phil Grau, John Alzmann and Tom Bostley hy gradu- ation. SWIMMING TEAM Qur Swimming Team is expected to give us some really good meets in the future. At the end ot the past season they showed great improve- ment. It is expected that next year they will have their hest team in years. Mr. lVlcArdle has done his usual good joh in getting the hest out ot the hoys. RIFLE TEAM Last year, with a team made up mostly of juniors and sophomores, the ritle team had another successful season. As a matter ot tact none ot the hoys on last yearys team are going to graduate. The teamls prospects tor the future are unusually good. With Mr. Vviegand, who has shown that he is one ot the leading coaches in the city, to guide them, great things can he expected in the future. Recollec- tion of it brings to mind some of our most creditable pastimes,-our sport clubs and gym periods. The Board of Education has deemed sports and muscular coordina- tion so important as to make them a required four year subject. Our gym teachers have taken pains to instruct Clevelandss finest feminine athletes in the graceful and healthy activities which afford so much pleasure to our sports-minded girls. Mrs. Schnectc contributed her time and knowledge to the Senior Vol- leyball Club, while Mrs. Driscoll and Mrs. Rundquist skillfully directed the Junior and Senior Leaders Clubs. Of course, we all know that without Miss 0,Gorman, our Life Saving Club members would surely have sunk. And last but not least among our favorite gym teachers is Htwintde-toedn Dance Club instructor, Mrs. Bruckner. The members of these clubs represent the cream ot the athletic crop, and the majority of them are to be found in the Senior Leaders Club ably presided over by Arlene Scherne, President, and Betty Conroy, Veep. Edith Kahn, our 'sMost Athletic Seniorf' shared membership in the Club with Arelene Eyerman, Jackie Hoernig, Eleanor Bisch, and Adrienne Vulcina. These girls, along with Theresa Sotfos and Carol Masseur, have widely patronized our extra-curricular tournaments and have many P.S.A.L. medals to show for it. Perhaps the greatest sports attractions during these past tour years have been the intragym team tournaments. The ablest have received their numeral awards, and the twelve best girls in each class were chosen to represent their gym period in the all-important after-school tournaments. Our gym periods were made even more enjoyable during the spring terms when we conducted our classes out-of-doors. Softball, tennis, and handball were all engaged in under the sun. At night, our pool remained open to provide further opportunity for sports advancement. The highest honor in Clevelandys sportsdom is the major letter Qnce a girl has received this honor, she is automatically classified as athletic, Vve hope that in years to come, the training which we have received here in Cleveland will remain fresh in our memories, and that our motto will still be as it is today, KSMens sana in corpore sanon CA sound mind in a sound bodyj.
