The game was an exciting and close one! Cleveland ' s own Varsity Basketball team held a lead most of the game but ended up loosing to the last minute exploding Alumni. The final score was Alumni 75 and Cleveland 73, losing by only one basket. The Alumni consisted of Eric Maiden, Dave Wogahn, Bill Swee- ney, Jay Silverman, Tom Petruk, Pat Fisher, Jack Olsen, Mark Johnston, Dave Pierce, Bill Marvin and Bob Zatorski. Cleveland ' s own Varsity players were Phil Kelton, John Durso, Rufus Wade, Dennis Clay, Donn Disney, Mark Sneddon, Robert Reel, Darrel Tong, Steve Quam, and Don Thompson. The Alumni ' s two highest scorers were Jack Olsen 24 with 18 points and Eric Maiden 21 with 12 points. Cleveland ' s were Dennis Clay 21 with 17 points and Phil Kelton 35 with 18 points. Included among many of their activities, Cleveland ' s Drama Department participated in the Annual Drama Festival, entering all of its seven events. Three Cavaliers reached the semi-finals; Bob Anderson in Individual Pantomime, Ginger Ballard, Tedi Forest, Jan Sherman, and Jeff Woodbury in the Serious Scene, Carla Nors- trand, Willie Davis, Melinda Klepner, and Tom Kanhel in the Group Special category acting out Tennessee Williams ' The Mutilated . Bob Anderson placed sec- ond and received a $200 scholarship for his performance. Individual as well as group talent have provided Cleve- land fans with many unforgettable moments of entertain- ment. Fusions of Wonder J. Anderson ■v -_u:: . ■.; -.1- £A «. W . Yes, that thirst for the bizarre present in every Cava- Her surfaced once again this fall. Temporarily quenching that thirst was the traditional Spirit Week. A week of mind-boggling anticipation, and the jubilant shedding of one ' s inhibitions. Among the activities involved were the refrigerator box race, the two people blindfolded, tied with crepe paper diagonally across the quad race, broom hockey, the Varsity vs. Alumni Basketball game, and the infamous wheelbarrow race. Needless to say, enjoyment peaked, and insanity reached a new high! Victory ' s Vision u f l i ' ' W f iiSim utUBSii Sandy Farina, Larry Gonzales, Donna Tellez, Gary Custer, Jeri Teaff, Clint Archambault, Carrie Stanfield, Criag Freeman, Sue Petruk, Tom Furlong, Melanie Edwards. Dream J. Anderson As One! The full moon brilliantly shone over Verity Field that crisp night of November 5th. As it beamed down upon the five nervous beauties, each clutched the arm of her escort and won- dered what the evening held in store. They were not alone, for the stands were full of cheering caviliers and former cavillers who all felt the tension of the evening. As the anxiety mounted, Howard Borenstein and Sandy Farina reached for the first envelope and announced Fourth Princess; Carrie Stanfield, escorted by Clint Archambault. The second envelope revealed Melanie Edwards as the Third Princess, with Tom Furlong right along side her. Suspense filled the air as the contents of the third envelope re- vealed Jeri Teaff Second Princess, escorted by Gary Custer. With only the one envelope remain- ing, the stands grew silent. The two girls ' hearts raced as t ' ' • grip on their escorts; arm became tighter an ghter. When the announcement was made, the crowd screamed their approval as Sue Petruk, escorted by Craig Freeman, was crowned First Princess, and Donna Tellez momentarily abandoned the arm of Larry Gonzales for the arms of her prede- cessor Rosanna Chavez. Donna Tellez Queen ' 76 ' pi Ruedi Wiesendanger Switzerland Brigitte Herber West Germany Cleveland is proud to be part of the Youth For Under- standing foreign exchange student program. Four of the nicest people are here at Cleveland representing their own countries. They are here basically to experience another way of living and to learn more about the Ameri- can lifestyle. These students have easily adjusted to Cavalier life. We, the yearbook staff, feel we speak for all of Cleve- land ' s student body in wishing each one of them good luck in life, and all the happiness and laughter in the world. Alternate Views J. Anderson N Irina Pelkonen Finland Ilari Koskelo Finland After the Fall The Cavalier Drama Department performed their annual fall play on the nights of December 10th and 11th. Cavalier actors and actresses dramatized Authur Miller ' s After the Fall under the direction of Miss Victoria Francis. The audience ' s attention was captured by Clint Archam- bault ' s excellent portrayal of the play ' s main character Quentin. Spotlights accented the performances of three other key partici- pants; Denise Chastain as Holga, Carla Norstrand as Louise, and Melinda Klepner as Maggie. Senior Spirit Week this year included activities such as three-legged races, a pie-eating contest, water- balloon wars. Director of Spirit, Dave Bueno, re- mained safe only through the three-legged races and the lifesaver relays. Senior Spirit Commences The annual senior spirit frenzy was exposed once again as the Cavaliers tried to prove that three legs are better than four. Participants fumbled in pairs across the quad, some maintaining a little coordina- tion, others losing all and ending up face down on the ground. 20 Included among Cleveland ' s more obscure activities are the Halloween Eve Football Game and the United Crusade Award Luncheon. The thirty-six members of Mr. Giacomaz- za ' s fourth period class were the stars with a grand total of $85.78, or 238% in donations. M ♦ 0 JJ Australians Play It Too! Early in January an Austalian basket- ball team made Cleveland High School one of their stops during their tour of the U.S. Cavalier basketball players offered their homes for the five days that the Australians were here. On the night of January 5th, the Austalians showed Cleveland fans some basketball-Aus- tralian style! Basketball may be basketball world round, but our Cavaliers played a tough- er game, defeating the Australians 69 pts. to 34 pts. Apparently, to win a bas- ketball game, you need more than just a cute accent! ImSr • 1 i 2 January 20 was the big night for the Cavalier band and choir. Playing and singing their best, the 1977 Winter Concert exposed the extent of Cavalier talent. After the concert, awards were given to a few very talented indi- viduals in the band. The John Phillip Sousa Band Award was given to Phil Kelton and Tammy Lipps, and the David Vann Memorial Award was given to Paul Chapman and Tammy Lipps. Afterwards awards were given to Wayne Morton, David Ludgman, Scott Whitney and Mark Peotter. Fall Awards Concert 77 22 R RlfiEBftlBB fREEIEH Cleveland High: c o Spirit Week Cleveland ' s student body finally had the chance to see senior Cavaliers as they ' ve always wanted to — boxed up! During that insane period of time, known as Spirit Week, seniors were able to let their inhibi- tions run wild and raced blindly over the senior quad in refrigerator boxes. It was the first refrigerator box race held here at Cleveland and it was a great success! With relay teams of four, two at each end of the quad, the crazy contestants were to put the box over them, one at a time, and run to the other end of the quad to switch with the person waiting. With these people running all over the quad in different directions they ran into each other often with crazy results. ' ' ■' ■■' Mr i.-r i ' 23 Miller High School vs CHS Student Cabinet and the sweet . . Miller High Cleveland, a school known this year for its athletic accomplishments, went down not too gloriously in a wheelchair basketball game against our neighbors at Miller High. The leaders of our school, Student Cabi- net, lost to the Miller team 24-10. The activity was part of a Cabinet planned Spirit Week and had a very good turnout. taste of victory!! 25 26 Cleveland faculty overpowered Cavalier students in the annual Faculty vs. Student Body Basketball Game. Mr. Sanders, the big man around campus and someone we all look up to, led the faculty. The students were defeated 32-24 in the end. Ah! You ' re definitely as young as you feel! -. Cleveland High was honored this year with both the presence of the L.A. Philharmonic and twenty bus loads of elementary children. Amazingly enough, the organization and en- joyment of all reached a new peak. Needless to say, congratulations are in order to those involved. The L,A, Philharmonic The Banana-thonH y ' With or without the peels, it really doesn ' t matter to me ... H. Garcia What can be said about a banana-athon? A very good question indeed! All I can think of is that we sponsors donated funds to the senior council for use at the prom, and a lot of people got the munchies cured. The Ashanti chose Mov- ing On Up as the assembly ' s theme and dedicated it all to Har- riet Tubman, leader of the under- ground railroad and a member of the Ashanti tribe. The entertain- ment included skits, a fashion show, poetry, singing, and danc- ing of various styles. 30 ij. , ' i, i ' -. ' ,i. ' . ' . ' j ' . Ephebians are selected on the basis of outstanding character, leadership ability, high scholastic achievement and demonstrated service. The Society ' s major purpose is to focus the attention of its members upon matters of civic and community leadership, improvement and service s, and to inform and encourage the membership to actively participate along these lines. One student from each forty, or approximately 2 ' 2% from each graduating class, may be chosen as an Ephebian. To qualify scholastically, the candidate must have maintained a B average through- out his senior high school years. The purpose of this award is to recognize and to honor the outstanding seniors whose scholastic attainment, sense of civic re- sponsibility, and evidence of leadership give most promise of future success and service to society. The Achievement Awards Program was first introduced to the schools of the Los An- geles School District in 1948. Cash awards, trophies, and certificates have served to emphasize the value of self-improvement, service to others, and individual achieve- ment. The awards program has been expanded to include all high schools throughout the state, the state is divided into nine geographical divisions, each with an approximately equal number of students. The schools within each division form an independent pro- gram and winners do not compete against winners from other programs. The nine divi- sions are divided into zone areas. Cleveland is a member of the West Valley Zone. The selection of certificate and plaque winners is made by the faculty of the school with the guidance and approval of the principal. The four plaque winners are pictured here and the twelve certificate winners are as follows: Art; Daniel Nernberg, Drama; Pamela Bently, Music; Phillip Kelton, English; Margaret McLean, Foreign Languages; Joyce Ashley, Social Studies; Shelly Reamer, Laboratory Science; John Sullivan, Mathematics; John Sensible, Agriculture; Jonathon Giddings, Business; Kerri Korck- er. Farmer Service Award The William A. Farmer awards were originated to recognize two Senior Students, preferably one boy and one girl, who have contributed outstanding ser- vice to Cleveland in at least two fields. This award easily distinguishes these individuals from Ephebians since the only grade requirement is a C average. The award was named in honor of Cleveland ' s first principal and is given at the awards presentation during Family Night. NON-LEAGUE Varsity Football The Cavalier ' s first game of the 1976 football season was a 1 point thriller, that showed no indication what the future would bring. Cleve- land hung on to a narrow 14-13 victory in the closing seconds of the game against the Braves of Birmingham. Cleveland 28, Venice 20 was a mis- leading score. The Cavaliers were in total control of the game; Venice scored on careless Cavalier mistakes. Cleveland showed vast offensive improvement and showed promise for the tough road ahead. In the 3rd game of the season the Cavaliers defeated the Kenedy Cougars 28-7. The game was sloppily played with many turnovers. Cleveland ' s offense took advantage of Kenedy ' s mistakes. While the tough Cavalier defense turned away the Cougars, and lost a chance at a shutout with a deep scoring pass, Cleveland ' s offense showed well bal- anced scoring by passing and running. In the last non-league game of the season Cleveland ' s offense exploded for 530 total yards with 417 yards on the ground. Earlier in the week the coaching staff made a big change. Moving Full- back Tim Brown to tailback and Dave Smith from tailback to wingback. This decision was never second guessed and improved the offense tre- mendously because Cleveland uses the wingback as an all purpose po- sition. The final score of the game was 42-13 and Van Nuys scored on 2 deep passes to escape a shutout. Even though the Cavalier defense played well enough to get a shut out. The offensive line had a great effort by making big holes for the running backs. Thus the Cavaliers finished the pre-season unbeaten and seemed ready for the tough league schedule. LEAGUE In the first league game the Cavaliers tested their unbeaten record against the Conquistadours of El Camino. The Cavaliers turned back El Camino 20-12. In this contest, tailback Tim Brown again ran impressively. Quarter- back Darin Erickson threw a 41 yard passing strike to wingback Dave Smith. The following week the Canoga Park Hunters tried their luck against the momentous Cleveland football team. But the Cavaliers extended their winning streak with a 35-10 victory. The Hunters received an early break, when the Cavaliers lost a fumble close to their own goal line. But by a total defensive team effort Canoga had to settle for a field goal. Canoga ' s other touchdown came on a blocked punt. So the Cavalier defense were denied the much coveted shutout over which they had no control. But when the offense scores 35 points it can afford to make a few mistakes. One highlight of the game was a 91 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Dave Smith. The Cavaliers defeated Reseda 40-6 in front of a homecoming crowd. The offensive line of Hugo Garcia, Tom Bolewski, Mark Armstrong, Bob Denton, Tom Smith and Don Hallam constantly made huge holes for Jim Brown and company to run through. The defense played sound football, but again fell short of a 80 shutout by a single touchdown. Cleveland brought it ' s 7-0 record to Chatswork High to test the much talked about Chancellors. Thus far in the season critics complained that the Cavaliers hadn ' t played a good football team yet. But Cleveland proud to be superior by beating Chatsworth 33-6. Darin Erickson and Don Jorgens teamed up throughout the night with fine passes and some great catches. Jim Brown again proved excellent with his running and he consistantly leads the city in rushing. The Chancellors barely escaped a shutout against a fired up Cavalier defense. The league final against Taft was to determine the League Champ. The Cavaliers ended league play with a perfect 9-0 season by defeating the Toreadors 36-20. Cleveland ' s first undefeated and untied regular season. Tim Brown rushed for 125 yards to put him over the 100 yard mark for the season, and scored 3 touchdowns. Dave Smith scored the 1st touchdown with a 61 yard reverse on the 4th play of the game. The other touchdown was an 8 yard pass from Erickson to tight end Don Hal- lam. PLAYOFFS Cleveland ranked 3rd in the city, started the playoffs against Granda, and advanced by defeating them 36-20. The Cavaliers scored 4 out of the first five times they had the ball. Cleveland ' s defense held the High- landers to 69 yard total offense in the first half Granada scored their touchdowns with some fine passing. Cleveland ' s next playoff foe was the always tough Carson Colts. The Cavaliers were confident and were looking for revenge of last year ' s game. The Cavalier team peaked at this point of the season and played their best game in defeating Carson 33-12. Cleveland took ad- vantage of a fumble and drove 37 yards for the first touchdown. The Cavalier defense lead by linebackers Paul Romero, Tom Bell, and Reg- gie Blockman and defensive ends Sam Mendoza and Vic Rohrback played tough defense and forced the Colts to a bad snap from center on a punt, which resulted in a Cavalier first and goal on the 2 yard line. Dave Smith scored the turning point touchdown with pure effort by turning an 8 yard pass into a touchdown. Tim Brown and Darin Erickson both added touchdowns after a long drive down the field to cap the scoring. Palisades 11-0 versus Cleveland 11-0 the battle of the unbeatens. Pah eliminated Cleveland in the 1st round of the 1974 season. But not this one, as the Cavaliers rallied to defeat Pali 28-21 in the closing sec- onds. It was the most exciting game ever. Pali came out overconfident be- fore the game started and jumped out to an early lead. Cleveland was down but never did as they went crazy in the final quarter. Running for 10 yards a play. Tim Brown did this 8 times in a row. Finally with a minute left Dave Smith scored the final touchdown on a reverse that hadn ' t worked all night. So Cleveland for the first time was in the Los Angeles City Finals at the Memorial Coliseum. In the City Championship game the score never resembled the game. Those viewing the game saw the Cavaliers move down the field at will but couldn ' t score. Tim Brown gained over 100 yards rushing and over 1500 during the whole season. So it was to be that the Cavaliers weren ' t going to win City. Banning being the only blemish of a beautiful season. ' i! V. football team did not fare as well in league competition as they have done in the last two years. The team once again was lead by coach Bill Long and his assistant Ed Savastits. There were only three returning lettermen; Howard Whitney, Jim Alberico, and Dwayne Beardin. The sophomore standouts were Tom Croell and John Dugan. Steve Savastits, a tenth grader, received the Most Valuable Runningback Award. All of these players should be of some help to the Varsity team next year, since the team is made up of all sophomores and juniors. They had a few bad breaks at the beginning with several preseason injuries. Every game was close. Some of the key offensive players were Ken Hale, Tom Smith, and Gil Rosales. The defense was strengthened by Kevin Dixon and Manny Zuniga. Mike Houston played well on both offense and defense. With a little luck, the Bees would have had a better record. CHS OPP. They won their last seven games in- cluding one play-off game before losing to the city ' s second ranked team Crenshaw by three points. The Cavaliers finished the season with some impressive statistics. Rufus Wade averaged over 16 points, and 19 rebounds per game. Donn Disney scored over 15 points a game and led in assists. John Durso also scored better than 15 points and led the team with over 12 rebounds a game. Dennis Clay one of two juniors on the starting team, the other being Rufus Wade gives us high hopes for next year ' s team. This year Clay equaled Durso ' s scoring production and helped rebounding with his abil ity as a leaper. Darrel Tong led the team in steals and averaged 7 points a game. The subs contributed to the outcome of many games. They were Donald Thompson, Robert Reel, Phil Kelton, Steve Quam, Mark Sneddon and Danny Ross. All in all their season was very satisfying. This year ' s team returns 7 out of 9 starters. Returning catcher Paul Romero is a three year starter, was 1st team All-league, batting champ for the second year in a row, and last year ' s Co-Most Valu- able Player. Danny Bounds was a 1st team All-league pitcher, and last year ' s Co-Most Valuable Player. An- other returning player Dave Smith was a 2nd team All- league infielder. Tom Bell has the duty of 3rd base for the 2nd year in a row and should be a prominent player this year. Shawn Toerner, a transfer from Notre Dame High School will be the lead-off hitter and 2nd baseman. His hitting should be a key to the success of the team. Center fielder Don Jorgens, another 2nd year player should be an inspiration to the team. Bob Moran and Allen Smith are the starting Left-fielder and Right-fielder. They round out a good defensive outfield and should get their share of hits this year. Wayne Redburn will be playing 1st base when he ' s not pitching. If the team plays its kind of base- ball it should be a league and city contender . . . 97 i Mi ,  - J ' -4 k V ' :Xi- ii Z L A : qwTR ' lTr ■' ■J ' !P h ' ' ■' «™;;t ' , « ' ' ' L.Harland, K.Fazio, T.Swick, R.Shimimoto, E.DiUion, A.Johnson. They have yet to be outrun, winning the Canoga Relays and defeating Granada Hills and Monroe, two Mid-Valley favorites. In early league meets, the Cavaliers outdistanced El Ca- mino and Canoga Park. With the athletes on the team, the Cavaliers should coast through the rest of league with Chatsworth being the only hurdle, if all our runners compete. Our 440 relay team consists of Reggie Blockman, Tim Brown, Walt Corley, and anchorman Gary Moschin. These runners also run in other events; the 100,200,440, and also the hurdles. John Durso runs the 440 plus one leg of the mile relay. Ben Hutcherson leads in the shot put along with sophomore Steve Stavastis and junior Mitch Smith. Don Rose long jumps and triple jumps. Barrel Tong triple jumps and high jumps along with Dave Mazor and Tony Talbot. Talbot also pole vaults along with Ed Anders and Eric Polzein. Dave Long has placed high in the hurdles. It takes a lot of hard work and effort to keep things running smoothly here at Grover ' s Corners and these young citizens of America should not be overlooked. Under the supervision of Mr. Pierce, President Sue Brees has accom- plished all of her final goals with this group and this year ' s senior class. Remember, Today ' s seniors are Tomorrow ' s leaders. The House of Representatives is an organization com- posed of a pupil from each second period class who goes to meet with all the other representatives once a week to discuss school policies and upcoming events. With all the information they gather in the meeting, they report back to class and discuss what was said. It is a very use- ful program because it gives each class an in depth look at the backbone of our school, and helps to bring up new and better ideas for the upcoming years. The 1977 Le Sabre staff has put together one of the school ' s best year of newspapers. They have provided our students with very good information of what ' s going on in and around our school. The staff is supervised by Mr. Hyde who keeps the students running around finding out what new topics are in debate or topics that are in the news. The stu- dents themselves get a better outlook at the different situations in the world, and some students look at this class as an opportunity for a job in the near future as a A ch nrfti reporter or broadcaster. r bliailil The Ashanti tribe of Africa had had its endless fight for freedom. Being brought to the new continent in the 1600 ' s, they were frightened and sick- ened of their new home. Time and time again they tried to escape, to flee from their hor- rible life, to stumble upon some new freedom that would lead their people to an equal salvation. That was the goal of the slaves of the Ashanti tribe. Here at Cleveland we have a club entitled the Ash- anti. This consists of a hand- ful of black- students who or- ganize drives and activities. Their main event is the Black History show which they put on during Feb. They had nu- merous skits and plays and a fashion show depicting the styles of the 70 ' s. V- On the morning of June 1, 1976, we, the eighteenth yearbook staff, were rudely awakened by our predecessors. Get up! Congratulations! You are now a member of I.. ne xt year ' s yearbook staff! Staff? What staff? At 3:30 in the morning, who cared? Dragged out of our beds, we were cordially given breakfast — not in bed, but in our pajamas. That was the first day we were together as a group. -M We were thrilled, happy, even proud, to have been chosen for the yearbook staff. The following September, however, we were stunned into oblivion at the enormous task we faced ahead of ourselves. Cover? Theme? Colors2 Well ..... . - it took more to decide than the average yearbook reader could imagine. Sometimes we had it out among each other as those horrible deadlines loomed in front of us emd pages had to be turned in. Editor-in-Chief pushing the other Editors, Editors pushing each other, and Mr. Davis pushing all of us ... ah! What Memories! Experiences? Yes we had many. The times we would laugh at Emery ' s copy, or notice Jeri in the corner with her birthday hat on, the lonely chair next to the box marked Tim Ranier-Art Editor — yes many. We all used to watch Brenda and Dave point the finger at each other for losing negatives or forgetting to take pictures. Such confusion! Tom used to entertain us with his brilliant remarks, for instance, when asked how his pages were coming along he would reply, Just fine and yours? Sue we just shook our heads at when she would start to type, for the fifth time, the sam ' paragraph that she ' d been doing for the last hour. Yes, and Barb we were all fond of. (Some were more than just fond!) We all, at one time or another, had listened to Lori ' s idea of how to do something. Sometimes we used her ideas, other times we just ignored them. Paul and Kathy would answer pictures! We need pictures! to any- thing you asked them after a while. Linda was especially good at keeping the people down at Northridge Studios company. Oh yea, and Eleanor, our Editor-in-Chief, well she had the toughest job on the staff. She was disliked by all of us at one time or another just for doing her job, that ' s what made her job so hard. Finally, we will remember Mr. Davis as our touch-up man, who ' s main job was to point us in the right direction and pick out the mistakes that had tried to sneak by us. The whole year in itself was an experience — and what an experience! Now that the whole ordeal is over and the yearbook is out of the room and in circu- lation, we can look back and say, That wasn ' t so bad after all. Remember how much fun we had? And as sure as time softens the past and its memories, we will look back and laugh. To the Cleveland student body, faculty, and whoever else may buy the eighteenth edition of Les Memoires, the yearbook staff of 1976-77 presents this book and sin- cerely hopes you enjoy every page of it. , ' ■r- ' A ;v WMiM miffmmfffi mfffnnffffn ' • ' i EITB I.M.fM,l y«vvvV mMMi ' Z? o fia p aces; ' V, guj(?f days spei tat favorite places, c Crazy days when we were young and free y n wondering what we ' d grow ufLto be.
