COURSE COMPLETED IN NIGHT SCHOOL ELEANOR BRANT NORMAN SHEA BEVERLY WOOD Honor Students of the Senior Class SEATED: N. Rizzo, F. Cappellano, L, Greco, C. Broncato. STANDING: C. Montante, S. Zaccagnino, A. Missineio, T. Bishop. Salutatory The time for farewell has finally come. Ever since we entered Grover four years ago, all our hopes and endeavors have been centered on that promised goal - graduation. Now as that promise is being fulfilled we find that our anti- cipated joy and happiness is mingled with a sudden sadness as we realize that we are now leaving our Alma Mater where many happy moments have been shared with our classmates and friends. On this night we cannot forget our parents. Mere words fail to express the deep gratitude we owe them. Their expression of confidence in us has been most welcome. Their encourag- ing attitude has enabled us to overcome our disappointments and failures, and also to be content with the feeling that we have tried to do our best. ln a sense the triumphs and honors of graduation belong to them also. To the faculty, we offer our heartfelt thanks and hope we can justify the work and faith put in us. Besides teaching us the required subject matter, they have tried to instill in our minds a sense of moral responsibility. They have helped us to see that each of us is an individual with a distinct purpose in life. As we go into the world of today, we sorely need their good judgment and sound words of advice. ln reality they were not merely our teachers - they were our friends. At last we must say good-bye to Grover- and good-byes are never easy to say. We can never really leave our friendships and the memories of the good old days spent here. Those happy times will be relived again and again as we take our places in the world for which Grover has so ably prepared us. FRANCES CAPPELLANO CLASSES 5' JW F52 QZ?45i?3?5W FIZIENDLIEST M. A student graduating in this course is qualified to de- velop his artistic talents in the following ca- reers: lnterior decorating, window displays, advertising art, ceramics, industrial design, photography, publishing company art and stage setting design, BUSINESS-Bookkeeping, shorthand, office and secretarial practice, business law, business arithmetic, and typing make up the curriculum for the secretarial and business courses. After four years of preparation, students are capable of filling many positions in the business world immediately after graduation. Because of their general usefulness, business subjects are often chosen as electives. ENGLISH-Each student must study four years of English. Success in almost every vocation involves a considerable knowledge of the mother tongue. Through the years they be- come familiar with the masterpieces of English and American literature as well as the gram- matical structure of the language. A command of English is essential in the fields of law, teaching, library, secretarial work, journalism, and dramatics. 38 Study BOYS' GYM CLASSES-Twice a week Grover's boys attend gym classes. These periods pro- vide a recreational break in the everyday regu- larity of the school day. During the fall the boys play touch football outdoors and in the spring, softball. Through the winter they par- ticipate in basketball volleyball and other games. During class periods the boys exercise on parallel bars, horses, ropes, and rings. These activities stimulate interest in intramural and varsity sports. GIRLS' GYM-Physical education is required of all students during their four years. In these classes we find the girls engaged in various activities. Exercises, working on the parallel bars and rings, instruction on correct posture, and dancing are among the varied activities. There are also intramural contests in volleyball, basketball and bowling to name only a few. The girls work to get 500 points so they will re- ceive a gold pin their senior year. HOMEMAKING-The girls of Grover Cleve- land are offered a complete course in Home- making. This includes cooking, sewing, child- care, home nursing and family living. Girls completing this course may find many interest- ing careers open to them such as dressmaking, homemaking teachers, housekeepers, food pre- paration, and practical nursing. Every girl will be a better homemaker after completing this course. 39 . M. -I- N Sfsvvf f lfiyv- ,.. A ' 1 ' LANGUAGE CLASS-To graduate with a lan- guage diploma, a student must take three years of one language as well as two years of another. He may choose Latin, French or ltalian. A language is particularly helpful in a science course. lt is a great aid in understand- ing our own language. Hence, many students are enrolled in one or more language classes. MATHEMATICS-Algebra, geometry and ad- vanced mathematics are a part of the everyday study program. These subjects are very help- ful to boys and girls who are interested in attaining higher fields of learning, Mathema- tics are not only helpful in school work, but also in one's daily life. They can be applied to the teaching of mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, laboratory technician, doctors, lawyers, dentists, drafting, architect, account- ing, research, and other professions that re- quire a knowledge of mathematics. DRIVER TRAINING-Under the capable su- pervision of Miss Mache and Mr. Holland, the Seniors of the class of '56 are learning to be sportsmanlike drivers. This course is taught both in a related class of twenty weeks and a regular driver's training class of ten weeks. At the end of the twenty weeks, the Seniors take their tests and receive their licenses. 40 SCIENCE-Students interested in the field of science are given the opportunity to study chemistry, physics, and biology. Actual labora- tory experiments enable students to understand more completely the connection between science and everyday living. Through these courses, students may prepare themselves for careers in dental hygiene, X-ray technology meteorology, pharmacy, laboratory science, horticulture, dietetics, cafeteria management, medical secretarial work, scientific research and photography. I I SHOP-Shop students are offered Compre- hensive General Shop courses which introduce them to several fields of industrial work. The second and third courses are general in nature but delve into the fields of woodworking and cabinetmaking. Young men in this course learn to manufacture furniture of various types. Among these are Chippendale, Queen Ann, and other styles which are mastered by the students who follow this curriculum. Shop is a recognized three year sequence which leads to a diploma. CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION-Citizenship Edu- cation is an essential requirement for all courses of study. Students learn about the historic past and acquire a knowledge of cur- rent affairs. Such subjects as Economic World, World History and American History are in- cluded in the course, A knowledge of social studies may be applied to a career in law, gov- ernment service, or the teaching of history. Social studies are also helpful to architects, lawyers, research workers, and journalists. 41 A f rf? E 5 .543 3 Q. . -3335 Nl ,....4 I -1 pf' 51 '9'--.5 ff-M 'LA 1 ACTIVITIES , x'A'n l.' Every Friday the council, composed of twenty- four members, conducted its meetings under the guidance of Mr. Howe. The council was active in various projects in the school, such as collecting clothes for the Clothing Drive, undertaking the job of cafeteria monitors, and reading the announcements in the assembly. This year the council appealed to the generosity of the students to contribute funds to buy Easter baskets for the children in orphanages. To end a successful year, the Student Council was instrumental in suggesting and passing the Rules of Dress for the Buffalo Public High Schools. LIBRARY MONITORS--Eight girls volunteered to assist our librarian, Miss Faber, during their study periods throughout the year. They file cards in the card catalog, assist in taking inventory, check on overdue books, and keep books and magazines neatly arranged. They also collect library permits. Thanks to their service the library operates efficiently and provides maximum benefit for Grover students. LIBRARY MONITORS- SEATED: S. Pancamo, R. Skapinski, H. COOk, J. Ri- naldo, E. Students from many different countries contributed rare and beautiful articles which included grass skirts from Hawaii, a Polish national costume, pillow- cases from Italy, handtooled leatherwork, a delicate nuku from Estonia, an ivory-inlaid dagger from Damascus, one little Koala bear from Australia, and other rare articles from England, Egypt, Hungary and Palestine. These were all on display at Grover this past year, L thanks to our foreign born students.
