Make sure the ones you choose are light and airy, gay and carefree. Don't pick anything portentous like Dragnet's Dum-De-Dum-Dum, or Beethoven's opening chord for the Fifth Symphony. This just isn't that kind of book. We wanted it to be informal, casual, a mirror of the golden days we spent at Grover. Those were our happiest days, so we tried to capture their mood. We hope you will agree that we did. 43 YN X 5'4- New S555 NK-N X . ,N X -- ' X TOAQAIHMBE ?fQ if MR. JOHN F. DEVINE Our Principal TO THE SENIORS: How long a time lies in one little word. Richard ll. II f .E U5 Valeclictory When first we entered Grover Cleveland High School as awe-stricken freshmen, graduation seemed so far away - four years was nothing short of an eternity. But the years have slipped rapidly by and now that graduation is at hand, we of the Class of l954 wish to express our gratitude and affection toward our school. Although this is one of the happiest events of our lives, we cannot help but feel sad at the thought of leaving behind all the things we have come to hold so dear. The past four years have been full and happy ones. We take with us golden memories of days that are no more, but which will live forever in our hearts. To put into words our feelings of gratitude and affection is difficult. In a material and moral sense, Grover has been a way of life for us these last four years. Through its teachings and its traditions, it has helped us broaden our understanding, increase our knowledge, and sharpen our skills. lt has given us more than facts and data, it has shown us that a necessary condition to a full and happy life is the development of a proper attitude toward citizenship and responsibilities. It has tried to instill in us those habits of mind and work which will open doors of opportunity for us in our future endeavors. To the teachers and administrators of Grover we offer our sincerest thanks and appreciation. To those whose labors have brought us to the fulfillment of our hopes, we say, Thank you for your selfless and devoted efforts. We will try to live our lives in such a way as to demonstrate that your work has not been in vain. On this occasion we wish also to express our gratitude to our parents. To them we can only say - May you always be as proud of us as we are of your love, your forbearance, and your dedication to the task of raising us to be worthy of our God and our country. Thus we say our farewells - saddened by the immediacy of our departure, but content and grateful that we are well equipped for what lies ahead of us. When they arrived in September, the Freshmen considered themselves mature and adultg to the upper-classmen, they seemed young and bewildered. These grammar school alumni felt themselves competent to tackle any problem, yet on the first day their sole task was to complete endless forms, a chore which gave them writer's cramp. Later, they were given their yellow promotion cards whereupon they immediately began to compare class schedules with their friends. Fate had indeed dealt them a cruel blow by assigning them to different teachers! When classes began the Freshmen were easily distinguished by their constant inquiry as to the location of this or that room lThe usual retort? On the fourth floc.-r. l As the Year of Adiustment year progressed, they familiarized themselves with most of the school regulations but could never quite comprehend the logic of the rule that a corridor slip was required just to walk in the halls. The monitors' challenge, Where's your pass? has made many a Freshman tremble. As time went on, the Freshmen adapted themselves to the life ofthe school and achieved recognition in athletics, scholarship, and extra-curricular activities. With their auspicious beginning they cannot fail to bring honor to Grover, as many of them have brought honor to their respective grammar schools. The confused novices of September are true Groverite-5 in June. Sophomores . September arrived and our last year's Freshmen, now an integral part of Grover's student body, came with care-free expressions to begin the second year of their high school career, Fully acquainted with the school procedures and accustomed to the rules, they were prepared to inaugurate a successful school year and accomplish whatever was expected of them. Remembering their own experience as Freshmen when they were at the beck and call of upperclassmen, the Sophomores saw to it that history repeated itself. Traces of their activities were in evidence in the cafeteria where, for the first few weeks, freshmen faces blushed with lipstick decorations-and with the exertion of carrying Sophomore lunch trays. Year of Assurance Once Freshman initiation was finished, the Sophomores devoted themselves to their studies. While they could always be identified in the halls by the few books they carried and by the Not-a-care-in-the-world expression on their faces, la picture which not even final examinations changedl, they passed very creditably. The Sophomores excelled in athletics. ln spite of their lack of experience, Sophomores gained positions on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Their victory in the intra- murals in November augurs well for Grover's future record in interscholastic cross country competition and the Sophomore contestants were outstanding in intramural track. The Sophomore record at the half-way mark is very promising and we anticipate a brilliant future for them as upperclassmen. 30 .luniors . The first few days of September found our unit-conscious Juniors scrutinizing their schedule cards to be sure nothing had been omitted. They had returned to Grover resolved that this was the year to buckle down to serious business. The casual air they had worn in their Sophomore year was gone - they were serious students. In the winter the Juniors were friendly with each other fthe class elections were rapidly approachingl. At last they experienced the fun and thrill of electing their class officers and superlatives. The homeroom treasurers, however, found it very difficult to collect the dues and had to resort to giving a Howdy Doody badge to everyone who paid his dues. Year of Decision But finally all the dues were collected and the Juniors focused their attention upon Junior Day. They prepared a fine Junior Day Program and enjoyed their day as a respite from preparations for the rapidly approaching final exams. From Junior Day fun they returned to their books with renewed vigor. This, too, was the year that they began thinking seriously of their future vocations and spent many hours in the counseling offices dis- cussing various careers, and receiving much valuable advice from the counselors. Truly, this was a year of decision for the Juniors and we are sure that they have used it wisely. LEFT TO RIGHT: Matthew, Penny, Russ, Sarah, Marie, Joe. To enter the Latin room is to turn the clock back to old Rome. The room is decorated with colorful posters, clippings from newspapers, and pictures of Roman scenes. Mr. Hogan's broad background of Roman history adds interest to the classes and his students agree that Latin has not only enlarged their vocabulary, but has also in- creased their historical knowledge. The motto of the Latin classes is, Labor omnia vincit. FIRST ROW: M. J. Weyrnoth, R. Pantonini, D. Aiello, D. Boyer. SECOND ROW: J. Arcadi, L. Guerreri, M. Lopardi, V. Bartolotta, P. Congilosi, C. We had a team of stark courage and dogged determination. lts spark defies description, yet it was in evidence in all the games they played. Behind the mis- leading scores and statistics, we had a team of which we can be proud. They may have lost game after game but they never lost their fight. They played the last game of the season as well as they played the first. Our indomitable Sal Valvo scored 224 points and was named on the second All-High Team of both the Buffalo Evening News and the Courier-Express. As the season progressed, a fiery little thunderbolt named Roland Vallone, Joe Raco, a promising sophomore, and Stan Collesano, a talented freshman, came to our attention. With Collesano, Raco, Grisanti, Greene, Martinelli, and both Realmuto brothers back with us next year, we look forward to a most promising season, VARSITY-STANDING: J. Raco, S. Collesano, N. This year two veteran tennis players returned, Tom Aurelio and Russ Di Bartolo, to bolster an inexperienced team. Grover's squad is small in number but high in spirit. BASEBALL-This year's baseball team is composed of many holdovers, veterans with a season or more of experience behind them. After many weeks of close competition the Sure Shots of Room 3ll were vic- torious over the winners of the Freshman- Sophomore Group. ShootI Shoot! A moment of silence, an aim, -a miss. That is what usually happened every Thursday afternoon dur- ing Basketball season. The winners of the Freshman-Sophomore, Junior-Senior Leagues were Rooms II5 and 300 re- spectively. In Review ' '.., one, two, three strikes you're out on the G. C. field. . . This was the song the girls sang every Wednesday night during our spring baseball season. Deck tennis came next with elimination contests being held in the gym classes each week. The championship battles took place after school and the Wee Four, a freshman team, proved to be the victors. With the first signs of spring, sleepy- eyed girls managed to get to school early enough to participate in the Badminton tournaments. Because of the fine turn- out, Badminton contests continued through June. IConcluded on next page.I lLettD JUNIOR-SENIOR BASKETBALL- DEMONSTRATING: C. Drago. FIRST ROW L. to R.: P. Nichols, L.
