The Idea of Our Book The greatest pleasure in one's life is to recall the joys and pranks of youth. Therefore, we have attempted to portray in these few pages our life at Grover. All we ask is but one tear and one smile for memory's sake and we shall feel that the labor expended on this book will not have been in vain. On each of our lead pages, there are students who symbolize the phases of our school life. These chosen few were selected by the Senior Class because of their superlative achievements. , all ,, , 4 ll n , I: V nu :Milli f QL I ll II In W VALEDICTORIAN CARL Comma MR. CHARLES A. The task assigned us has been done, and the promise which our parents and our Teachers have seen in us has come to fulfillment. All that has gone before in the past four years of earnest endeavor we will try to apply through our adult lives. To Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Devine, and the mem- bers ofthe faculty go our thanks for a job well done. It has been proven to us that education consists not so much in quantity of informa- tion, but rather in quality of imaginative guid- ance. We feel that the lessons we have learned have been less mastery of fact, than increased awareness that the world we live in needs de- cency and honor, spirit and integrity. Above all, we know it needs intelligent citizens who can adapt their education to help solve its problems, to keep it free as the Almighty and the founding fathers intended. Within our power, we will insure that it is a world in which the individual can pursue his destiny, mindful of false philosophies yet assured because he knows them for the destroyers of liberty that they are. To our parents-neither poet nor wise man has put into adequate words the sentiments of affection and gratitude that are ours. The joys and plaudits of graduation might belong, in truth, to you. As time firms and molds our character, we trustfully hope that it brings us more of the strength and inspiration we have drawn from you. We should say farewell to our school, yet, in a way, we can never say farewell to the friend- ships, the gains, the pleasant and fruitful days that Grover has given us. We know that these memories will ever be renewed and relived. Carmelo Contino. CELESTINA ABATI- Speech is silver, but silence golden. Business, Sports, Ambition: Model. Well, imagine meeting you on a rocket ship. Where are you going? Why, l'm with Leonard Anzalone, Antoin- ette Vullo, Duane Bennett, Sally Nasca, Joan Hurley and John Giallombardo, all Groverites and we're going to a reunion of the class of '50, Do you know who the pilots of this ship are? They are none other than Benny Scinta and Millie Baggarozzo. You know, they were always flying high together. Fasten your safety belts, please. We're landing at the Buffalo airport. Well, goodbye now, Pat. l'll see you at the reunion. Toodleoo. Step this way, folks, step right up to Guz- zio's Glowing, Glittering, Glistening, Gleaming Shoe Shine Stand, the stand where you can sit. Paper, paper, get your paper. My goodness, paper boy, you remind me of Jack Bagarozzo, a former classmate, Well, ma'am, l am. Would you like a paper? Why, this newspaper is almost exclu- sively Grover Clevelandish. Owned by Carrie Polito, it has as its editor Rose Marie Vellere. Ginny Bartolotta, who always did click with everyone, is the shutter happy photographer. Our prize English student, Rocky Fenno, wrote this exclusive article on the double wedding of Brad Nutty to Pat Telesco and Tony Testa to May Tripi. You can see where Grace Petock is now designing costumes for television broad- casts. Then, too, this article tells of Marie Tromba's promotion to Supervisor of the new nursing school. Her assistant is to be Celestina Abati. Thanks for the information, but l really must leave now, l'll read the rest of the paper in the taxi on the way home. Hmmm-Look at this sports page. Marge Zolczer, Marcella Beaty, Marlene Martin and Joan Petock have joined the Olympic swim- ming team. Oh, this should be good-the Roller Derby is coming to Buffalo, August lst, bringing with it those wildcat skaters, Toni Parisi, Susie Panaro and Rose Marsalaf' Here we are, Miss, at the big, booming, beautiful Sal A. and Sal J. Ballacchino Hotel, Inc. As our visitor signs the register, she reads the names of some other alumni who have come for the reunion. Among these are Mary Della Sala, Glenn Lincicome, Robert Godios, Lucy DiPasquale, Theresa DiMarco and Carl Rizzo. She marches over to the elevator which is run by Carl Saccone, who always did have his ups and downs in life, and then she retires to her suite to gain sufficient strength for the hectic evening which follows. Yes, that was the night to remember, the night when the voices of the Class of '50 again resounded through the halls of Grover. Presid- ing over this glorious affair was Charlie Pace, the Principal, assisted by Frank Cartonia. The speech of Anthony Maccagnano, President of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Suffer- ing Seniors, was interrupted by a radio-active flash which blew out the atomic lighting system in the auditorium. However, light was restored by bright Mike Vertino, the custodian, who has finally obtained an official life-long member- ship at Grover. While talking to Marge Kearney, a teacher at Grover, our visitor learned that several of our girls such as Mary Procari-Rossi, Anna Mule, Helen Stevenson and Joan Sunzeri are now sta- tioned at the Wave quarters in Good Bye and that air hostesses, Joan Claus, Etta Winters, and Pat Fox are now living at the Flying Saucer base on Mars. She also learned that Joe Tim- ineri is author of the famed book Forever l'm a Senior. As usual, the gang decided to dash across the street to annoy Mr. Donahue. Kay Naples, Rose Pignataro, and Cassie Leone were still sipping the inevitable nickel cokes. lt took quite a while for Johnny Tomasula to compose the concoctions which were ordered because he was interrupted by a customer who was in dire need of a box of Peter's Pink Pills for Puny People. This ailing customer was none other than Joe Lazzaro. Ah -the time has come when our visitor must bid her friends goodbye. This is t-he end of a perfect day. As she rushes to the rocket base to catch her stratospheric flying saucer, she runs into Antoinette Pisa, Joe Pilittere, Jeanette Kester, Ray Mesiah, John Warner and Marie Loverso. They too had decided to leave Buffalo and venture into a more fantastic world. Will if explode? Year Book Staff wins first prize for identification College or job? Blase l.aDuca, that towering freshman, has become quite a big man on the campus. Work- ing with the football, baseball, and basketball teams, he should be quite an asset to all groups. Caesar Tronolone has acquired undying fans among all the students, teachers, and parents who watched his side-splitting performance in Do You Remember? Another first year man who made a hit in the school play was Saverio Lattuca who played Angelo Fatte Posta in the grammar school scene. Mr. Kennedy en- joyed Rosalie Andolina's rendition of Auld Lang Syne so well that she was asked to repeat it at a future assembly. ik, ' ,f Freshmen Many frosh have come to us well-recom- mended from the grammar schools they attend- ed. Dolores Falcone, president of her class and winner of the DAR and Frances Curro winner of the Jesse Ketchum and DAR awards, should be among the leaders of their class. Our ath letic future depends largely upon the following young sportsmen, Anthony lppolito, Pascal St. Angelo, Michael Giallombardo, George Pollino, Mario Galluzzo, Justin Badame, and a host of others. Our little ones who look forward so eagerly to their sophomore year would do well to pause for a moment in their fast-moving world to look back, perhaps with a little tear, upon the friends and memories they have made in the past few months, for these are those precious years that will never be forgotten. Sophomore Entirely free from the embarrassed bewilder- ment suffered by freshmen, our sophomore class has now begun to participate in round- the-school activities Five of the sophomores, Captain Joe Tauri- ello, Charlie Sciandra, Ronnie Parisi, Mac Ciminelli and Mel Caruso Cwho, incidentally, has won the table tennis championship for the W.T.T.T, of N.Y.S. and is also on the debate teaml have developed into the finest cheer- leaders we've followed in years. Their skill and wit recall to our minds two great cheerleaders of the past, Joe Guerra and Charlie Pollino. Watching the athletes, we have seen Fred Saiia and Vinny Carbone match their brawn against the best in the city in the football series phisticcites and we have pretty high hopes tor Sonny Pinna- taro in the basketball tournies. The second year boys have dominated the scene in track and cross country. Russ DiLorenzo, who received a major while only a freshman, Rocky Zendano, Don Tomasulo and Frank Ricotta bring the light to Mr. Kuhn's eyes. The more studious sophomores shine in their line of endeavor. Heading the list of our intel- ligenzia are Thora Percival, Concetta Natoli, Edwin llardo, and James Gullo who is also gaining valuable experience with the debate team. Then there are the social-minded students Pete Grisanti, Thomas Gallagher, and Bob Tim- ineri, who are always willing to have a good time and help everyone to have one, too. The resolution --THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD ADOPT A PLAN OF SOCIALIZED MEDI- ClNE-attorded the members of both teams an opportunity to express their par- ticular views on this current problem. The affirmative side ot the question was presented on home grounds against Technical. Our own Buffalo orphans were also remembered at Christmas time by many Grover girls who voluntarily filled some forty stockings to overflowing with gifts of all kinds. Salvatore J. Ballacchino and Marie Cordaro certainly must love school. Throughout their four years at Grover, they have been neither tardy nor late. Congratulations! A new organization was formed by former Grover stu- dents this year - the GROVER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION - under the leadership of Richard Salem, President, After their initial meeting during November, they held their first dance at the Armory, and now plan to make it an annual affair. We're certainly proud of that group whose initiative has enabled us to carry on our activities even after leaving Grover. And who could forget the unscheduled vacation caused by the coal strike? We certainly enjoyed the seventeen days of freedom, but now we're suffering under the strain of extra work and 3 o'clock dismissals. Gangway for the Harriers NTRY-The Cross Country team, under the direction of Mr. Kuhn fared well last fall. ln three dual meets, the team finished first once, and second twice. In the All-High race, the team placed sixth in a ten team field. The first five boys to finish for Grover were Captain Dick Simmons, a speed demon, Rocco Zendano, a hundred pound will o' the wisp, Howard Gawne, the carrot-topped scrapper, Frank Ricotta, a lad diminutive in stature but enormous in fighting heart, and Don Doria, a fleeting zephyr on the cinder path. We would like the team to know we appreciate and admire them for their efforts. BASKETBALL-The '49-'50 edition of Grover's cagers enjoyed its most successful season in several years. The team emerged victorious in 6 contests, defeating Burgard, McKinley, Riverside, Technical, East and La- fayette. The most exciting but most heartbreaking games of the year were our losses to Kensing- ton by a l point margin and to Masten by a 2 point margin. Special recognition must be extended to Toto Paul and Andy Scire, co-captains, who both received honorable mention on the city'S All-High Team. To the squad, those unflinching youths who strive for Grover's glory, we offer our appre- ciation. , r A. Felix, R. Geraci. SEC- OND: Mr. Kuhn, R. Sim- mons, J. Barone, R. Arduous work, perseverence, and a willingness to win have been the main ele- ments in the success ot the team. BasebaH Eighteen fiery boys with a glowing ambition to give the school its first championship- that was G. C.'s baseball team. Led by its Murderers Row, Capt. Nick Mogavero, John Tronolone and Tony Paul, all potential All-High Candidates, this season's team was a respected aggregation throughout the league. Track Although not of championship calibre, the l95O track team has won itself a place in the hearts of the student body. This fighting band of warriors, although greatly inexperienced, gave a creditable showing in every meet. School Athletes Though not widely publicized, girls' sports form an important part in the after school cur- riculum. Among the various activities in which our athletes may participate are basketball, baseball, volleyball, deck tennis and hiking. Credits, given for each sport, enable the girls to receive their letters and the much sought after gold pin in their senior year. The deck tennis champions-hip went to 308. Composed of Jo Silvaroli, Gloria Caruana, Annetta Anselmo, Mary Ann Pollino and May Tripi, the team defeated 300.
