Sorrow we find throughout the world, And hardships everywhere, But with the help of God above, These hardships we will bear. Until this dreadful war is won, And havoc is no more, We'll dream of glories of the past, To further glories soar. We look back now at joyous days, Which quickly took their leave, And our dear Alma Mater, Which taught us to believe. A last farewell to Grover, While tears roll down our cheeks- But memories of Grover, Will help us scale life's peaks. Marie Mesi K, . swf' 4 Wm? :Siam '-,N n GX , Y M Q ,gzmgggggh , ,. . 7 F 1' J, 1. Tonight, truly a momentous one, we close another chapter in our book of life. What the next chapter will unfold depends solely upon ourselves. We all know that behind us lie many happy joys of youth, together with its puzzles and indecisions. Behind us are the foundations and associations that are destined to aid in the moulding of the future. Now we must say goodbye to our past connections that for the last four years have been so pleasant. That they will always be cherished is a certainty. Let none of us ever forget what our Alma Mater has meant to us-the friendships we have made both with the faculty and student body. Nor shall we ever forget the din of the cafeteria, the quiet of the study rooms, the ringing of the classbells, the fun of par- ties and sport events. Poignant memories of these will ever be remin- iscent of the love and fidelity we owe our school-Grover Cleveland. To Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Devine, and the faculty our most gracious thanks would be meagre return for the patience and care they have exercised in their teaching of us. 'By their careful guidance we have been prepared for the problems and perplexities of manhood and wom- anhood. lf we can fulfill their expectations for us perhaps they will be repaid for their long, hard work. To our parents we give deepest tribute. Through the years they have ever been at our side, encouraging us in our successes and sym- pathizing with our failures. Our happiness tonight would not be half so complete were they not here to share it with us. lt is with these thoughts that we part tonight, placing our hopes and trusts in the Higher Power that shapes our destiny. Mil and Rollo f o 9 fef S ewumsce f? Ly Four years of high school have their reward. They not only lead to gradu- ation, but they also provide material for reminiscing--so let's go back to 1941 and -reminisce. Remember 1941? As adolescent Frosh we set out to conquer our world fGrover Clevelandi. We sold the largest percentage of budget books and purchased the greatest number of war bonds.-Remember when Maria Mazzuca and Salvatore Zaccagnino won the spelling bee--and Rosie Cappellini and Gloria Maggio topped the Honor Roll. Mr. Kennedy's statement, lt is the Freshmen who are most out- standing this yearl set the seal on our triumph. September, 1942, found us returning to Grover as Sophomores. As befits upper classmen, we acquired poise and dignityl?i, and wrought sweet revenge upon the new arrivals. -This year found Grover at its best. Our track team won the trophy-with George Pinkel and Jimmy Ralabate among the first ten at the finish. -Remember how our scrap pile grew to an impressive size-and how the bond sales zoomed? lt was in this very same year that our school was faced with the threat of being closed. Thank God, our campaign was successful and Grover is still ours. Before we knew it, September, 1943, had rolled around and we then bore the title of Juniors. Remember the Junior Social, or rather the Barn Dance, complete with plaid shirts and square dances - how the Junior girls defeated the Senior girls in that unforgettable basketball game-when 300 revived Campus Topics -and how it actually didn't rain on Junior Day? And now it is 1945-the last of our school days at Grover Cleveland. We shall never forget the loyal and trustworthy friends we had during our four years of High School-and the memories we shall always retain in our minds, pleasant ones, and some sad ones. Our pleasant memories include the plays presented by the Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes-each one better than the other, yet all praiseworthy. This was the year we all shall remember as the first year in which a Junior-Senior Prom was given at Kleinhans Music Hall. At this point let us pause to pay homage to those boys from the Class of 1945 who have left Grover to serve in the Armed Forces. Among these memorable lads we find familiar names-names such as: Joseph Gentile, Chester Swanson, Stanley Patten, Cosmo Grisanti, Salvatore Zaccagnino, Daniel Letteri, Daniel Rob- erto, Matthew Nasca, George Pinkel, George Salemi, Leslie Smith, Carlton Nor- ton and Jack Maynard. At this time, we pay special tribute to Vincent Marmion, who is one of those who 'gave their lives for their country. We are proud of these boys--proud that they were part of the Class of '45. A group both eager and reluctant now leaves Grover Cleveland--a group eager to emerge into a world of opportunity and adventure, but reluctant to leave part of our life behind us. We shall try to uphold the principles you, our Alma Mater, have instilled in us. F 6 4 'pm ani-5. 11 WW Q 1 if l ,hwfw i 1... The early morning classes to make up for lost time-the mystery of the dark halls while we waited for the teacher to arrive-snapshots taken on the campus and also the eternal hope of Seniors that they will improve upon their predecessors-these we leave to the Juniors. Sitting in the balcony-electing officers at last-becoming a real part of the school recognized by the faculty and by classmates-the Juniors leave the Sophomores these privileges and others too numer- ous to be listed. To the Freshmen we leave the right of Sophomores to forget their plight as untried Frosh and to blight the lives of newcomers with scorn- ful looks and hazy answers. The following personal bequests are also made: Salvatore Piccillo leaves his reservation for the office bench to An- thony Alberti. Grace Santonocito leaves her dimples tfive of theml to both the Jenkins girls, Shirley and Joyce-Emma. ltjen, her height to Lorraine Taylor. Rose Portera leaves her histrionics to Jeanette Perla, Marie Mar- rale her gift of gab to quiet Mary Marcy. Fred Pieri wills his hu- mor and antics to Johnny Licata. To Pat Genco, Lois Saeli bequeaths her handy gestures, and Mildred Scaffidi leaves her diplomacy to Peggy Hessler. The Seniors who once studied Cicero leave a wornout pony to the prospective Cicero students. Don't ride it too often. To Frank Cascio is willed Richard Gimbrone's giggle - to Frank Mesiah, George Ricotta's perplexing teasers. Rosie Cappellini leaves to Anna Mae Lewis her sincerity and ambition. To the art students, Lorraine Jalbert leaves a bit of advice. Don't confuse your teacher and don't yawn. Jimmy Ralabate leaves the field free for Pete Piccillo-Rollo Gen- naro, his charm to Peter Giovinazzo-Carmen Anzalone leaves his blush rouge to Bernard Rehbaum-Dolores Barone her exclusive variety of clothes to Carol Maul. Rose Boda leaves her priority for an alarm clock lwhich hasn't ar- rived yetl to Christine Fontana. Elvira Maraschiello wishes to leave to Florence Russo success in her voice lessons. The Senior Class, being of sound mind, herein inscribes its name to the above document, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hun- dred and forty-five.
