We were so unsure aboul everylhing . . . where lo go . . . whal lo do . . . and whal nol lo do. We were awed by lhe magnificence of lhe seniors . . . we marveled al Charlie Polino and his booming voice. We lhoughl business-law sludenls were sludying scripls for a play . . . We cou'd hardly wail lo grow up so lhal we could invade lhe sanclily of lhe Office Praclice room and lhe Lab. We were an enlhusiaslic class: we wanled lo do everylhing. Remember when . . . Mary Ann Ralcliffe and Carmela Saccone lopped lhe firsl assembly honor roll . . . and Jean l-lickey and Frank Loiacano weakened lhe ceiling beams wilh lheir cheers: when Phyllis Genlille became an over-nighl slar in Slepping Along. We look very seriously lhe commandmenl: Five days shall lhou labor, some of us even pulling in overlime. And lhen, lhe day we became sophomores, and were sure lhal we were lhe class lo change lhe school's desliny. We ioined all lhe clubs and wenl oul on all lhe sporls. Remember when we became lhe proud possessors of PINK reporl cards. Remember lhe fealher culs and how lhey grew .... The French Club's play Junior Fouelle slarring Arno Slernglass as Junior. . .and Bozo who made his appearance in l-li, Neighbor. We began lo lake less seriously our commandmenl Five days shall lhou la born: in facl some of us iusl didn'l lake il. This was our firsl war year-and Mr. Dressler lefl us for Uncle Sam. Remember lhe airrraid drills, and how our bond sales began -and soared. Remember lhe day we moved inlo 3l5, 300 and 2I2. We carried lhe proverbial apples oul lo Delaware and won lhe Columbia cup for cross-counlry .... The debale Who won lhe Civil War, lhe Men or lhe Women? caused a greal rifl belween lhe male and female populalion of Grover. The Broken-Down Workshop, presenled in assembly by lhe Seniors, lefl us rolling in lhe aisles. Remember our scrap pile and how impressive il looked . . . and lhe 'illle silver plane lhal winged across lhe fronl of lhe assembly on ils way lo Tokio and lhe purchase of our pursuil plane- The Clevelanderf' Remember lhe lump in our lhroals when Grover's boys in lhe service slopped in lo say goodbye. Remember lhe bleak dread of lhe day lhal lhe headlines said our school was lo be closed . . . and how we had our chance lo really change lhe desliny of Grover Cleveland. Remember lhe gym as a viclory garden on Junior day wilh lhe carrols and radishes. We didn'l pay much allenlion lo five days lhis year-we were loo busyl Remember lhe day we look a deep brealh and became Seniors. Five days shall lhou labor, iusl didn'l apply lo us-we were wandering around in a daze-happy lo be gradualing, sorrowful lo be leaving. We missed Miss Moore and welcomed Miss Coon'y in ZOO. From lhose who slarled oul wilh us in I94-O, lhe Army claimed Roberl Lang, Carmen Bairaglia: The Marines, Joe Scire. lhe Navy. Bob Pallen, Vinny Merlino and Jack Dilorenzog Mr. l-logan lell lhe pugnas Caesaris for lhe Fighl for Freedom. We're going now-and il seems as lho' we iusl came. four perfecl years lhal we can'l ever repeal and won'l forgel. There are so many lillle lhings lhal we never quile apprecialed 'lill we gol lo be Seniors . . . lhe quiel of lhe long halls al four o'clo:k . . . lhe characler- islic bounce of lhe freshmen . . . lhe beauly of our wide lawns and while pillars . . . lhe rippling of lhe flag on lhe Campus . . . lhe lhrill lhal sweeps over lhe aud as lhe assembly slands lo sing lhe Slar-Spangled Banner. ll's all gone much loo quickly and already gradualicn is here-gradualion inlo a draslically changed world in which our days al Grover Cleveland shall be lhe mosl carefree and precious we'll have lo remember.
