At the close of the football season, Frank Bottone, Arnie Berg, Ed Liguori, and Harry Schmidt were mentioned for the All Essex County Team. Arnie and Frank again made first team All Conference, playing center and fullback respectively while Harry and Ed, our two tackles, received second team places. Caldwell fought ferociously at our Thanksgiving Game with Verona for tirst place in the Suburban Conference, but lost 21-12. We wound up the season placing third in the Conference. BASKETBALL Caldwell High School's basketball team under the able and experienced guidance of Chief Bonnel won 5 games and lost 8 during the 1949 season. The boys exhibited fine sportsmanship and carried themselves well in every contest played. The season started with the Alumni game. Our boys beat a star studded lineup of ex-Caldwell High aces, 42-30. Next College High rolled into Caldwell and the Blue and White, led by jack Riddell, set back the Montclairites 28-24. Our first Suburban Conference tilt was played against Summit. The Hilltoppers built up a lead that was very formidable, especially with time running out. Caldwell came back however in the final minutes with a desperation shot by Doran to tie the game up and send it into the overtime period only to lose, 33-27. Then with jake jacobus leading the brigade with 12 points, Caldwell hit from all angles on the offensive and sewed up Glen Ridge on the defensive. Madison High came into town and in a thrilling game which was fought down to the wire, and high- lighted by jack Riddell's 14 points, won 56-47. A very tough Verona quintet played Caldwell at Verona in the nrst meeting of these two teams. A decided height advantage which the Hillbilly outfit possessed, enabled them to walk away on the long end of the score, 46-37. Caldwell lost their next game to Millburn, 60-37. jack Riddell was absent from this game and jake and Bill Doran had to shoulder the scoring duties without him. Caldwell met Summit for the second time and for the second time lost a heartbreaker, 37-35. Neal Simonson was chief scorer in this game, leading his mates with 8 points. Our boys dropped a 60-37 decision to Glen Ridge who were very good on that particular night. jake jacobus was Caldwell's guiding light with 10 points to his credit. In Caldwell's firzst game of the year, the Chiefs pulled the cork out of the bottle by stop- ping a favored Madison combine. Bill Doran was the hero of the day as he poured 26 points through the nets to lead all scorers and to lead us to a 54-50 viCt0ry. Millburn again downed us, this time by a 61-43 score. In the final game of the season, the Blue and White traveled to Montclair again to take on College High. We came away with an inspiring 35-34 victory. We hope that the experience gained by the juniors on the squad will form a strong foundation for next year's team.
