Ol 8 WOI' Exactly one hundred years ago this year, the forty-niners rushed to the west in a foolish quest for gold. From our High School education let us hope we have learned to evaluate wisely the worthwhile things of life and that we, the nine- teen forty-niners may never rush foolishly for life's hidden treasures. May this book be one of those worth while things of life more valuable than gold to us for may it ever be rich in lovely memories. We start- ed this year with the earnest desire to have a substantial budget, so under the guidance of Mr. Long, our class adviser, and a committee of very willing juniors, we sold re- freshments at the home football games. Our next venture was the annual sale of Christmas cards, and this year an added attraction was the sale of handpainted napkins. After these most profitable adventures came the traditional cake sale. All these made possible the splendid success of our beautiful prom, which I am sure will live in the memory of every junior long after we leave Caldwell High. Besides raising money we, juniors, participated in all of the school activities and made a fine showing. Next year will find many of our junior boys stepping into Varsity positions vacated by graduating seniors. All in all, we consider our third year in G.C.H.S. a very happy and successful one. U43 The Sophomore class, this year numbering over three hundred stu- dents in all, is the largest Grover Cleveland High School has ever had. At the beginning of the year these students elected a Sophomore Coun- cil to take charge of their school activities. Miss Courtney was se- lected to be the Faculty Adviser and she, together with the Council, went right to work on the dues. It was decided that the dues would be fifty cents per student, making a working capital of one hundred and fifty dollars. This money was used to defray the expenses for decorations and refreshments for the Sophomore Dance, which was an informal affair, well run and very well attended. The members of the Sophomore Council are Paul Leonard, the presi- dent of the classg Peter Fallon, the vice-president, Mary Ann Rudolph, the secretaryg jacob Harris, the treasurer, Mary jackson, Ruth Knoff, John Chichester, William Belton, Peter Hofinga, Robert Egg- enberger, Edward Searles, Helen Neu, and Adolph Storz. As the Clarion goes to print, thee Ninth Grade Council is busy plan- ning its second term activities. They are working hard to make this a .successful year for the Freshman class. First and foremost on the list is the Freshman Dance. The plans for this give promise of a party that ought to be a great success. A Roller Skating Party is also planned for Febraury 25, during the mid- winter vacation. It will be held at Florham Park Rink. Sports are playing a great part in Freshman activities this year. The football season is over and our team emerges fully qualified for heavy duty service next year. Although they didn't win many games, what they lost in prestige was made up in experience. Our basketball team shows very great promise and is made up, for the most part, of players with Plenty of skill and experience. With the coming of baseball, we look forward to a successful season. There are many hopeful candidates and an abundance of team spirit and interest on the part of the rooters. in 374 it E , ,Ja S-.. -' Q Q G ' ,Q saws? f .4 qi-txizaw 1 -, A YA VY? SAM GELFMAN Preridenl f -I The second branch of our student government is the Student Coun- ' cil. This is a smaller group selected from the Senate by the Senate 4' members themselves. f tt As it is a smaller organization the Council takes care of any serious it ll fy business that may arise during the course of the school year, and acts 2 g 1 i I on it immediately, besides planning the agenda for each Senate meeting 1 which lies ahead. ,- Maybe you would all like to know the purposes of our Student A' ' Council. Here are its three outstanding aims in brief form: 0 i I 1. To increase the condition and promotion of student activity and .Y to insure greater participation by all students. 2. To promote better relations between the teacher and the student, ' and among the students themselves. 3. To develop the student appreciation of democratic membership in a school. At the head of the Student Council are only two offices, and each is filled by a capable person. Sam Gelfman is the president, and Nancy Ericson is the secretary. Both the Senate and the Student Council have proved to all of us that they can perform a note-worthy job on anything they may under- take, The democratic way of life is the best way of life. Our student government is great evidence of this in our high school. 59 t'-f'f' pibhfuenne f 1 1 ,QW '. t I 4- sv, JJQVVLLAQ5 This year the assembly committee has tried to out do, in every way possible, previous years' assembly pro- grams. In September we started the year with several football rallies, in which the new cheers of the season were introduced to the students. Following these in October, one of the main programs was that put on by the Senate, in which they illustrated their usual Dos and Don'ts of school behavior with short tableaux. In November, just before election, the public speak- ing classes presented a debate on the controversial subject Truman or Dewey ? In addition to this lively pro- gram, in November we also had a most delightful Thanksgiving play directed by Miss Wilson. Early in December Miss Pettet's Dramatic Club entertained us with an hilarious comedy entitled Re- hearsal which we all enjoyed very much. At Christmas-time, the assemblies were chiefly musi- cal programs with the entire student body joining in to sing the beautiful carols, After the holidays we returned to school in january to greet our guest from Belgium, Miss Louise Laboulle, who spoke to us in assembly about life in Belgium. We surely were thrilled to listen to Louise. Another program we enjoyed also in january was Al Tambuscids stu- dent talent show, Cavalcade of Music . In February the public-speaking classes again par- ticipated in the annual oratorical contest sponsored by the American Legion. Fourteen able contestants com- peted with one another in topics ranging from Our Founding Fathers to the present day Marshall Plan. In March we were treated to a panel discussion, and another excellent talent show presented by Leonard Fisch- bach. In March also, the P.T.A. of our school sponsored a Dutch Program, which consisted of Dutch folk songs and dances. It was truly one of the most enjoyable assemblies of the year. In April we had as our guest speaker, Dr. Axtell, our Supervising Principal, who entertained us most de- lightfully with his fine dramatic renditions. Also Miss Pettet's Dramatic Club again presented one of their enter- taining comedies this month. Then in june came our awards assembly, in which everyone entitled to one of the various awards was honored. Following this assembly was the final Senior assembly. For the Freshmen, Sophomores, and juniors, this is a good-bye until next year assembly, but for the Seniors it is a final good-bye . It means for most of us the end of the happiest school years of our lives. i611 Ci- S I .WC 'J 1' , 1 C. I -4- ! L n E . I, Qx f'ff+-. M! l ' 7, Q Kg I 'Ki t 'Y ' fi rf? F, - - gi I? Throughout the year the girls in this club knit various articles such as afghans to send to veterans' hospitals, and they also make scrapbooks for the bedridden. One of their chief projects this year was the packing of gift boxes with many useful articles for the needy children in Europe. Under the capable supervision of Mr.s. Joiner this club has kept up the fine tradition of the Red Cross. Mrs. Joiner, Adviser. THE RECEPTIQNISTS Always at your service, on hall duty were the smiling receptionists. Under the guidance of Mr. Wilt, it was their job to direct all visitors, unfamiliar with the school, to their destination. They helped out in the various offices and acted as messengers. These receptionists were posted at, strategic places in our halls and there was someone on duty every period. These students helped greatly in preventing confusion in the halls and they all deserve a vote of thanks. ' s 911. 1 Mr. Wilt, Adviser. VISUAL AIDS The showing of all movies in the school was again the job of the Movie Operators. These boys and girls not only had to pass a test on the necessary operations but also had to learn how to manuplate the slide ma- chines and microphones used in assemblies. During the year the club sponsored a moving picture show to raise money to purchase a school movie camera. Under the supervision of Mr. Vorwerk, all the students did a line job and deserve a great deal of credit. 411 - 1 . 1 .' X. Summit 7 CALDWELL'S GRIDIRON Caldwell High's 1948 football season was a great year under the splendid coaching of Mr. john Brown, who completed his first year as head coach, After three weeks of pre-season training the first eleven were molded. At right end, Lee Nelke was unpassable on the defenseg right tackle was played by Harry Schmidt, a brilliant downfield blocker. Don Kirwan, a transfer from Bloomfield, was our terrific right guard until injured at mid-season, but Pete Crowther did a grand replacing job. At center was Arnie Berg, a savage defensive player who raised havoc with other teams. Skip johnson, Caldwell's left guard, proved a strong blocker. Left tackle was held down by hard-hitting Ed Liguori, while at left end was our vital pass catcher Bill Doran. The im ortant quarterback position was covered by jerry Bradley. joe Mesics offensive- ly manned the wingback spot, with Doug Seymour and Al Pfister, two hard running ball carries, alternating at tailback. At fullback Frank Bottone, our 190 pound blockbuster, was always good for five yards. U21 X1 'fl' 'nv ' I 7' Lwv v-......,, 1.1-X But don't forget our first-stringers were relieved many times by such able substitutes as Hovs ard jacobus, Phil Winchester, Jack Riddell, Sam Gelfman, Donald Schoolbraid, john Curley, Neal Simonson, Fred Eckhardt. At the close of the football season, Frank Bottone, Arnie Berg, Ed Liguori, and Harry Schmidt were mentioned for the All Essex County Team. Arnie and Frank again made first team All Conference, playing center and fullback respectively while Harry and Ed, our two tackles, received second team places. Caldwell fought ferociously at our Thanksgiving Game with Verona for tirst place in the Suburban Conference, but lost 21-12. We wound up the season placing third in the Conference. BASKETBALL Caldwell High School's basketball team under the able and experienced guidance of Chief Bonnel won 5 games and lost 8 during the 1949 season. The boys exhibited fine sportsmanship and carried themselves well in every contest played. The season started with the Alumni game. Our boys beat a star studded lineup of ex-Caldwell High aces, 42-30. Next College High rolled into Caldwell and the Blue and White, led by jack Riddell, set back the Montclairites 28-24. Our first Suburban Conference tilt was played against Summit. The Hilltoppers built up a lead that was very formidable, especially with time running out. Caldwell came back however in the final minutes with a desperation shot by Doran to tie the game up and send it into the overtime period only to lose, 33-27. Then with jake jacobus leading the brigade with 12 points, Caldwell hit from all angles on the offensive and sewed up Glen Ridge on the defensive. Madison High came into town and in a thrilling game which was fought down to the wire, and high- lighted by jack Riddell's 14 points, won 56-47. A very tough Verona quintet played Caldwell at Verona in the nrst meeting of these two teams. A decided height advantage which the Hillbilly outfit possessed, enabled them to walk away on the long end of the score, 46-37. Caldwell lost their next game to Millburn, 60-37. jack Riddell was absent from this game and jake and Bill Doran had to shoulder the scoring duties without him. Caldwell met Summit for the second time and for the second time lost a heartbreaker, 37-35. Neal Simonson was chief scorer in this game, leading his mates with 8 points. Our boys dropped a 60-37 decision to Glen Ridge who were very good on that particular night. jake jacobus was Caldwell's guiding light with 10 points to his credit. In Caldwell's firzst game of the year, the Chiefs pulled the cork out of the bottle by stop- ping a favored Madison combine. Bill Doran was the hero of the day as he poured 26 points through the nets to lead all scorers and to lead us to a 54-50 viCt0ry. Millburn again downed us, this time by a 61-43 score. In the final game of the season, the Blue and White traveled to Montclair again to take on College High. We came away with an inspiring 35-34 victory. We hope that the experience gained by the juniors on the squad will form a strong foundation for next year's team. Mountain Lakes meet was next and Caldwell lost this one, 56-52. We finished third, however, with 15V2 points in a triangular meet with Dover and Clifford Scott. Next came the Summit-Glen Ridge-Caldwell triangular meet in which the Blue and White came in second with 40V2 points. The Suburban Confer- ence meet brought Caldwell a fourth while the Verona meet ended disastrously for our boys. The Millburn meet resulted in a 58-58 dead- lock, but 2 points were gained by Caldwell in the State meet by virtue of Arnold Berg's fourth place in the shot put. There were several records broken during the year. jim Glerum broke William Tanner's 440 yard dash record, running it in 54.3 sec- onds, three tenths of a second faster than the old record. Phil Win- chester and George Reider tied james Doran's 100 yard dash record. They each ran it in 10.5 seconds. George and Phil also broke the 220 yard dash record, their identical times being 23.2 seconds, one second faster than the old record held by jim Doran. The shot put record was smashed by Arnold Berg. Arnold heaved the iron ball 45 feet M3 inches to break George Stryker's old record by more than three feet. Other boys who were a great help to the team were: jack Riddell, half-mile ace, Bernie Solomon, Arnold Major, joe Mescis, Harry Schmidt, Robert Clark, Neal Simonson and Arthur Bracuti. rv wi ii- -ig.,-, 1 'au BUYS TENNIS Kneeling, left to right: Otto Schzule, Thomas Ho5statter. CHEERLEADERS Rain or shine, these girls were always ready with a smile and a cheer at the '48-'49 football and basketball games. This peppy squad, in their cute new outfits, is one we are very proud of. Besides their excellent cheer- ing, every one of the cheerleaders mastered the art of the cartwhcel which adds glamour and color to their performance. These girls deserve a great deal of credit, for they cer- tainly did get the student body behind our teams, which no doubt was an important factor in effecting many of our victories. Although the weather somewhat limited their schedule, the girls played three sets of doubles and two sets of singles with Glen Ridge and East Orange, and managed to defeat the Glen Ridge doubles teams. Since this is the first year for most of the players, they deserve much credit for holding their own as diligently as they did against the stiff competition of more experi- enced girls. ,f 1 -0 fe . , Q GIRLS' BO LI G As we go to press, the girls' bowling team has not yet completed its schedule, which includes games with Montclair, Belleville, Passaic Valley, and Morristown. The fine members who bowl in each game are those who hold the highest averages at the practice prior to the game. Meta Everett, Pat Harrell, Mitzi Milone, Carol Thorne, and Betty Zahn are among those who have maintained consistently high averages throughout the season.
