Before the Pram As our senior year draws to a close and graduation day is quickly becoming a reality, we would all naturally pause to remember many of the interesting events which made our high school life so en- joyable. Even though the coming years will lead us in many direc- tions, some to the business world and others to college. we will al- ways cherish the memories of the time we spent at Caldwell High. In our freshman year, due to the large enrollment, we felt that a finer school spirit would be attained if we were to know each other better. Therefore, in October we held a Get Acquainted Dance, This affair was the highlight of our freshman year. ln our sophomore year our school day was changed to seven periods, preceded by an activity period dur- ing which our assemblies, clubs, and homeroom activities were held. lt was during this year that we welcomed Mr. Rutter to our fac- ulty as Vice-Principal. Shortly after we returned to school we elected our class officers. They were Bob Van Dyke, president, Betty Guen- ther, vice-president, Joyce Weber, secretary, and Wilbur Muller, treas- urer. During this year the class decided to sell Caldwell buttons as a means of raising money, In Feb- ruary we held our Soph Hop. It was well attended and made us feel proud that we had sponsored it. After the season of spring sports we all again went our different ways during the summer months. When we returned as juniors we welcomed a new principal, Mr. Rutter. Mr. Elsea, who had been our principal for 32 years, had re- tired the previous june. We felt the loss very deeply, but realized that after such faithful service, Mr. Elsea deserved a rest, His place has been ably filled by Mr. Rutter. Because we had a great deal of work to do this year, we promptly set about electing our new officers. They were Dan Haggerty, presi- dent, Wilbur Muller, vice-presi- dent, Barbara Kirchner, secretary, and jerry Robbins, treasurer. Our first undertaking was to sell Christ- mas cards. With the money earned f38l Smile prolly for the camera! from this project we gave our sen- ior friends a wonderful prom. It was at this affair that the Ring Ceremony, instigated the previous year, took place. At this time each junior was permitted to wear his class ring for the first time. After this, our school activities went on as usual until the end of the year. When at last our senior year arrived we entered school with a different outlook. Because we were seniors the other students looked up to us, and we had to make a good impression. Classes were con- ducted more informally than in previous years, and our whole atti- Big Haul Are you rrarly? Buddirx The Discus Tbmurr UL tude in general was on a more serious plane. As our leaders for our Senior Year we chose Dan, Betty, Bobby and Joyce. The sale of magazines being a success, we then took time out to follow the progress of our football team. This year our team tied for the Confer- ence Title, although Summit was awarded the trophy because they had beaten us. However, the most important thing to remember about this football season was that we defeated Glen Ridgelll After suf- fering thirteen previous defeats at the hands of the Ridgers, we finally accomplished the heretofore impos- sible. Being good sports the Glen SS HIST RY Ridge team presented our school with the football which had been used at this game. The fine support given by the cheerleaders, the band, and the student body helped to make this season a success. In the fall also, a canteen was started through the action of the Student Senate, which was held about once a month. Most of these were well attended because a variety of games and entertainment was planned. Then came the basketball season which we all enjoyed and then on March 6th, we held our Senior Ball. The decorations for this af- fair represented a Southern ball- room. All of us seniors and our 119418 dates enjoyed this evening, and it was one more milestone along our High School journey which we will always remember. The following week, March 12 and 13, the High School play, en- titled Lavender and Old Lace, was presented by a talented group of students. This is always one of our most exciting events and it was very successful as usual. As this year's issue of the Clarion goes to press, we, the seniors, are looking forward eagerly to the 'lun- ior Prom, Class Night, our Senior Banquet, and hnally Commence- ment. Adierz. Besides these thir- teen veterans there were many of last year's outstand- ing j.V. players and some new discoveries. Under the splendid coaching of Manlio Boverini, who is in his fourth year at Caldwell, and his new assistant, john Brown, who also did a marvelous job, the candidates went through an extensive program of drill in fundamentals and scrimmages with other schools. After several weeks of hard practice, the team shaped up like this: At left end was Paul Carney, a good pass receiver and fine defensive man, at left guard, Teddy Humphreys, a converted blocking back, at center, Arnold Berg, a sparkplug on defenseg at right guard, Tommy Zoolkoski, an excellent down- field blockerg at inside tackle, Arnold Liguori, our fine heavy duty mang at outside tackle, Harry Schmidt, an offensive specialist, at right end, Lee Nelke, the smallest man on the team, at wingback, Jack Leeds, a fine versatile runner, at blocking back, Frank Bot- tone, one of the most valuable men on the teamg at fullback, Hank Pfister, a hard driving line plunger, First row: John Brown CAsst. Sparked by Charpentier and Pfister we scored as soon as we got possession of the ball and ended up by winning to the tune of 3-i to 7. Next came Passaic Valley. This time it took us exactly nine plays to score. With Charpentier tallying 21 points in the first half we romped to a 39 to 0 victory. The following week, with Charpentier, Leeds, and Pfister giving a beautiful exhibition of ball carrying, we rolled over Madison 45 to 0 in our first conference game. Then came Springfield Re- gional. Hampered by injuries, we were upset by their hard fighting eleven, 25 to 6. Millburn was our first big conference game, and after four quar- ters of bruising football we came out on top, 15 to 13. After two postpone-ments due to rain we finally played our ancient rival. Glen Ridge. and with a decisive 18 to O victory ended their fourteen year winning streak over us. The following Saturday we suffered our second defeat of the season at the hands of Summit. Then in our annual Turkey Day classic we were held to a scoreless tie by Verona in a hard fought, grueling batrlegwkinding up the .season with the impressive record ot five wins, one tie, and only two defeats. At the end of the season several boys on the team received additional honors. Dick Charpentier, our superlative left halfback, who led the Suburban Conference in scoring two years and the county this year, was named as a backfield man on the All Metro- politan team which includes New York, New jersey and Pennsylvania. He was also chosen as a back on the All-State and All Suburban Conference Elevens. Arnold Liguori and Tommy Zoolkoski also made the All Conference Team at right tackle and left guard respectively and Arnold Berg and Henry Pfister were awarded places on the secopd team at center and full- back respective.ly.!jr 45 ..f , if A 1 jar - On December 8th, Chief Bonnel called the first practice session for basketball. Watching the prac- tice games, things looked good and our hopes were high. Then the season opened. The Alumni game was well matched in the first half and the boys were kept on their toes. Then Howe, Carney and jacobus went to work and put the game on ice for us with the score at the end 32-30. The Chiefs led throughout the game against Welch il! Montclair College High. Our musical organizations play a great part in the life of our school. At all times you will find the talented participants of the Mixed Chorus, Girls' Glee Club, Band, and Orchestra working hard to entertain us. Wliat would one of our football games have been without the exciting music and the performance of the Band during the half? They would not have been nearly so colorful, lacking that school spirit that only martial music can bring to a crowd. During the many pep rallies also, and at the award assemblies our band and twirlers have given considerable enjoyment to us all. Then, too, there were the many delightful musical programs put on in our assembly by the instrumental and choral organizations, especially the ones at Christmas and the Spring Concert in May. These programs were very much enjoyed by all. W'e owe a great deal to Mrs. Enid Axtell and Mr. Harold Kuhn. They never can be thanked enough for the time and energy that they gave cheerfully to make our musi- cal organizations such a success. A chest has been kept in Room 29 for all such ar- ticles, and from time to time a list enumerating these has been printed in the bulletin. This year with Mr. Sharpe as faculty adviser and Sam Gelf- man as the student represen- tative, this committee once again played an important part in our school. RECEPTIONISTS The receptionists have again continued their fine work this year under the supervision of Mr. Butler. Their duty has been to greet visitors and as- sist them in every possible way. When these students were not needed to direct visa itors around the building they helped out in the offices and ran errands. Alternates were chosen to substitute for absent receptionists so that there was someone on duty each period of the day. The running of the school has been greatly facilitated by the beneficial assistance of these students who gave up their free peri- ods so willingly. RED CROSS The Red Cross Club has kept up the hne work that it carried on during the war years under the able guidance of Mrs. Joiner. One of its greatest activities was the sending Of Good VC'ill Boxes overseas. Another of its activities was the mak- ing of Braille Covers of felt for magazines used for the blind. Although this club had only a dozen girls, it succeeded in making the membership of our school in the junior Red Cross 100 per cent. Front row. left to right: Frances XVrit!. The Commentator, our school magazine, has Continued the good work of bringing stories, articles, comments, and gossip to the students, this year. To do this, the 89 staif members tame together in a mass meet- ing before starting work on each issue, There, with the able assistance of Miss Brittle and Mr. Long, they decided on the general plan of the book. The staff editors took oxer from there. They planned their own material, held individual staff meetings to assign the work and edited the hnished product. After being thoroughly checked, the material was compiled by the editor-in- members and students. Kenneth Pfitzen- mayer started out the year and then turned the Commentator over to Colyer Crum. as- sistant editor, who has worked very hard on the succeeding issues. The only fault the students found with this most popular, tra- ditional magazine was that it did not appear frequently enough. uf chief and printed with the help of staff Pfit: unif 1877-1 ban! al uork. x 151' Tex, Pfiiz uml It-rm in trouble again. The decorations were both very artistic and unusual, the theme being an underwater scene. Murals of mermaids and King Neptune adorned the walls while fish nets and blue and white streamers formed a low ceiling and created an underwater at- mosphere. Bud Laird's orchestra was spec- tacularly placed in front of a huge seashell. The members of the decoration committee 'S 030 .1251 '0 QQ- '0 Y' K wig U41 if Tom 'il' '10 ,x who did such a wonderful job were Marie Kunjasic, Pat Snyder, jack Leeds, Nancy Lang, Lorraine DeMarco, Mary Lu Dowd, Bob Humphreys, Dan Haggerty, Bill john- son, Ralph Yersin and Barbara Kirchner. Rose Marie Trio and Ardyth Thomas were in charge of the bids and the refreshments. The committee in charge of music con- sisted of Dan Haggerty, Mary Lu Dowd, Barbara Kirchner, Bob Humphreys and Nancy Lang. For the second year, the impressive ring ceremony was held at which we received our class rings. The play centered .around a delightful little Lavender and Old Lace lady, Miss Ainslie, excel- lently played by a junior, julia Steere. The love interest in the play was supplied by Alberta james and Ralph Rosenfeld who most ro- mantically portrayed Ruth Thorne and Carl Winheld respectively. The comedy parts were taken by Nancy Kraemer as Hepsy, the excitable, hcl-:le maid, and b J! .mmf 'U' Hui an an in we in Uk joseph Venne as joe Pendleton, the rather thick- headed but congenial handy man around the house. Dwane Benedict buzzed about in the form of a gos- sipy old maid, Sophrony Trotter. Dr. Howard Pat- terson, an admirer, and dignified physician of Miss Ainslie, was played by Lloyd Goldsmith. Dorothy Farrell was very good as jane Hathaway, the over- bearing wife of her long-suffering, henpecked hus- band, William Nunamacher as james Ball. Bernice Carlton, a friend of Ruth Thorne, was nicely por- trayed by Margaret Willever. We all thoroughly enjoyed the play as there were some very exciting moments as well as some very humorous situations which kept us all either in sus- pense or in gales of laughter. Besides the coach and the cast, the members of the faculty and students who worked on the various committees, can never be thanked enough for their part in making our play this year such a success. wi ART CLUB Arizona Anderson lluris Hr-ck Iizirlmra Bischoff james Ilnlun John Cnlnxrn Frerl llnn.son ,loan Harrison Anna Klum' Hugrm Gail lamcs Louise johnmn Agnes Livnrse joseph Lucas Mary Ann Lum Donalil Nlilllmllrn Joyce Mills John Pfnrrinello Ginny Steffans Bert YYaggutt Ronalcl l.Yanamaker Bill XXI-will Ruliy XYy:1tt Charlotte Zucker DEBATE CLUB Faculty Adviser, llwane BL-neclict Barliara Brewer Fnny Vuozzo Dick Farley Dick Fleckner Dewitt Kc-rsh hay Main Holm Slilccr llick Sutherlin Bruce Toflfl 761 Bl r.
