Phyllis Vance The Groveport Chapter of the Junior Classical League started the year with twenty-two old members and twenty- five new members. A formal initiation for the new members was held in February. On March 29, we took a trip to Ohio State University for the State JCL Convention. Everyone had an enjoyable time. The club members purchased pencils in the JCL colors, purple and gold, with the name of the club and the club mot- to imprinted on them. The informal initiation for the new' members was held in April, in connection with the annual spring party. The club motto for the Junior Classical League is Ad Astra per Aspera, which means To the Stars through Dif- ficulties. This motto expresses the determination of the student of Latin to reach a high goal in spite of the diffi- culties that he encounters. Compliments of Dr. D. ORVAL KRANER OPTOMETRIST 900 S. The Groveport FFA had a very successful 1956-57 year. We competed in the DistrictPar- liamentary Procedure Contest. We received a Silver Award which is next to the highest. We participated in many judging contests and received high in all. Our highest was top place in the State Sheep and Wool Judging by Walter Kuhlwein. Some of our boys took a trip to Florida. This year we had many money-making projects: selling seed corn, potatoes Christmas and Occasional Cards, scrap iron and some other small projects. These projects netted about 5550. The Girls' Athletic Association is open to all girls in the high school. This is an organi- zation that helps freshmen girls and new girls coming into our school, and promotes athletic activities for all upper six grades. This is accomplished by means of the big sister plan, through the Big Sister Board. Board members were: Judy Higgins, Janice Carruthers, Ar- lene Glenn, Carol Knapp, Betty Woods, Barbara Day, Jo Dill, Peggy Knapp, and Marcia Mc- Guire. The GAA sponsored two guest speakers this year. They were: Mr. W. Middledorf, of the American Red Cross, who helped the Junior Class in its course in First Aid, and Dr. Floyd Faust, who talked on the subject Are You Fit To Be Tied? , One of the main accomplishments of the club this year was the teaching of dancing to all high school students. This was under the instruction of Mrs. Dorothy Breckler, formerly from the dancing staff of Arthur Murray Studios. Our only means of financing the GAA is the candy sale, which is encouraged by competition between classes. The freshmen won the Taffy sale and the juniors won the Yeanut Brittle sale. The officers each year are elected by the members and this year the officers were: Betty Woods, President, Judy Higgins, Vice President, Jo Dill, Treasurer, Barbara Day, Secre- tary, Flora McClure, Publicity Chairman, Peggy Knapp, Activities Chairman, Carol Knapp, Demonstration Head, Arlene Glenn and Janice Carruthers, Sports Heads. The girls in the GAA have an opportunity to participate in a great many sports. Each type of sport has a sport head. A girl is elected by her fellow classmates. We played Grandview and won. The squad was made up of outstanding players from the Junior and Senior classes. The hockey tournament was won by the Junior Class. More time is given to basketball than any other sport. Nancy Boring was in charge. The Fresh men, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior teams played Bexley, Grandview, and University teams. Groveport has girls' teams of which they can be very proud. They certainly won their share of games. The intramurals were won by the Seniors. The powder-puff tournament was won by Betty Woods' team. 5 Next comes badminton. Carol Knapp was head of this sport. We play both singles and doubles. Each girl draws for her opponent and the winners play winners until we have a champion. Doubles are run in a similar manner but a team must win two out of three games. Table Tennis is carried on the same as badminton. Flora McClure was head of this sport. Shuffleboard head was Marcia McGuire. Tennis head was Mary Jane McCollister. This sport is one that has not been emphasized at Groveport. We hope that this will change in the near future. In charge of softball for the year was Charlene Acker. We play a class tournament and also choose powder-puff teams for play-offs. Last, but not least, is tumbling. Anyone who has the ability to tumble may participate in this sport. Bertha Pope and Jill Preest shared the responsibility of this sport. We wish to thank our advisor, Mrs. Margaret Young, for making this year a successful one. MARCHING BAND BAND REPORT The 1956-57 Edition of the High School Band has been a very spirited and well-knit group. Consisting of 65 members, the band has engaged in many activities and programs. Following are some of the many activities that the band has been involved in during the past year: The Annual Memorial Day Parades at both Lithopolis and Groveport, a concert for the Fire- man's Carnival and later a concert at the Columbus Park of Roses. Also, an appearance at both the Franklin County and Ohio State Fairs. Next was a performance at the Pickaway County Fair of Circleville and their annual participation in the famous Pumpkin Show, also held at Circleville. The Marching Band appeared and gave performances at all home and away football games, the Pep Band played for all home basketball games, and the Dance Band played for many affairs and dances during the school year. The Annual Band Concert was held on March 15 with a large crowd attending, and a week later the Annual All-County Festival was held with ten of the Groveport members having been chosen to be in the All-County Band. Many of the band students attended both District and State Contests with John Brown receiving a I rating at both events. Used as money-makers, the band sold their yearly quota of candy bars and introduced a new item, the Cruiser-Pen. Many of the school-colored ball-point pens were very much in evidence during the latter part of the school year. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Gillum, closed a successful year by performing at the Eighth Grade Commencement, Baccalaureate, and Commencement Exercises. They are looking forward to many trips and events during the summer months. With Gene McClure, Charlie Barrett, Jerry Roof, and Allen Miller, as our only returning letterman, there was a lot to be learned from this ' 1956 football season. Groveport lost to Hamilton with a score of 12 to O. Next, they traveled to Dublin and brought a loss home with a score of 26 to 7. Nevertheless, the Crusier never took an attitude of defeat and their spirit of winning was always there. Whitehall came to Groveport for our first home game of the season, and we defeated them with a score of 48 to 13. This was the first game played on our new football field, one of the finest fields in the county. In the near future we have high hopes of having a stadium. Gahanna traveled to Groveport for the next game, and in spite of the fine game played by our team, we lost to the lions 20 to 14. Marion Franklin was confident of a win when they came to Groveport, but we trampled them with a score of Z0 to 6. Canal Winchester came to Groveport with high hopes of taking home a win and ring their victory bell. Groveport played a fine game and scalped the Indians Z6 to O. The next game was played at Hamilton. Though Groveport was ahead at the half time 7 to 0, Hamilton came up in the second half and won the game with a score of 23 to 7. For our Homecoming football game we played Reynoldsburg. The Groveport team played a good game but not good enough to beat the Raiders who toukhomea score ofZ1 to 7. The most exciting game of the season was played at New Albany. Groveport was losing until Jerry Roof threw a spectacular pass to Charlie Barrett who went over for a touchdown seconds before the gun went off. Groveport brought home score of Z1 to 18. Groveport played Mifflin for the last game of this season. But the Cowpunchers down Groveport Z6 to 0. The Co-captains for the 1956 football season were Charlie Barrett and Gene Mc- Clure. Though the team only had 4 wins and 5 losses the team never lost their winning spirit. The student body were very proud of the 1956 football team and all its wonder- ful members . Junior The Groveport Cruisers started the 1956-1957 basketball season with a victory over the Canal Winchester Indians, and then proceeded to lose seven straight games. This was due to the inability to hit from the field even though they were getting more shots. As the season progressed the shooting ability improved and the Cruisers ended with an average season of eight wins and ten losses. The season was highlighted with two special events. One was the Holiday Carnival, with un- defeated Reynoldsburg winning the trophy. Groveport won the other special event, that being the homecoming game. There will be six Senior members graduating from the squad. Those are Co-captains Gene McClure and Roger Klamfoth, along with Jerry Roof, Charlie Barrett, Fred Morgan, and Jack Rainier. Mrs. Hadley acted as president. We elected the following officers: President, Ned McClish, Vice President, David Friend, Secretary, Phyllis McCollister, Treasurer Nancy Miller. The Eighth Grade Class went on a field trip to Adena and Mound City. At our second meeting we discussed ways of raising money. It was decided that we would have the following three projects: a paper drive, a home made doughnut sale, and hand made Christmas decorations made by the members of the eighth grade class. It was decided that we would pay dues of 10 cents a week, but it was later changed to 10 cents a month. Our third meeting was held December 6. At this meeting the report was made on the dough nut sale and the paper drive. On the paper drive, the class made 519. On the doughnut sale, the class made 528. We opened our meeting on March 12 by discussing another paper drive, because our first one was such a success. We decided to have our second paper drive, on March 16, which netted us 526. One of the eighth grade teachers suggested that we have white elephant sales in the class rooms every morning. All three home rooms had these sales and the class made over 550. The students brought in articles that were in good condition and the students bid on these articles. Our class had decided to go on a class trip to Hemphy's Grove, but it was decided that no class trips could be taken this year.
