olleyball Volley Ball is a popular game for general exercise, because persons of limited strength, skill, and endurance can play it, and because its rules and equipment are simple. An official volley ball team has six players, but in games played merely for exercise ten or more players may play on each side. The game may be played indoors or out. ln some ways volley ball is like tennis. The standard indoor court is thirty feet wide and sixty feet long. A net is stretched across the middle of the court. The top of the net should be eight feet above the floor. The players use a round, light, inflated ball, about twenty-seven inches around. The object of the game is to keep the ball volleying back and forth across the net without letting it rouch the floor. The ball must be batted, and it may not be caught or thrown. William G. Morgan, a gymnasium instructor at the Holyoke fMass.D Young Men's Christian Association, originated volley ball in 1895. Y.M. C.A.'s throughout the country quickly adopted the sport. lt was later developed into an outdoor game. The first national volley tournament was held by the Y.M.C.A. in 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. Thus the game be- came popular throughout the world first through the Y.M.C.A.
