At the same time it is the oldest of all forms of education, Physical training has always been fashioned to the culture of the people and of the age. Primitive people taught their children only the familiar activities. Boys were trained for war or for hunting. Girls learned domestic occupations such as gardening, weaving, or making pottery. Physical education in the United States began in the 1870's. There were several reasons for the development of formal physical education classes in the schools of the United States. First, the life in large cities cut down on the normal form of exercise done by children on the farm. Second, health examina- tions showed the need of correcting physical defects during the early years in schools. Third, students themselves organized athletic programs which were to become an important part of school life. After World War I the American people be- came conscious of the need for this type of training when it learned about the draft statistics. One third of the men selected for military duty in World War I failed to pass the physical examination. Physical education is now an important part of every school program. It has been included in the cardinal principles of educa- tion as set up by the National Education Association which believes that it is the duty of the public schools to provide a program which will 'secure and maintain a condition of personal good health and physical fitness' for every child. The physical education pro- gram is usually broad enough to reach the wide range of individual differences found among students in every class. lt is concerned with the individual's fullest development and en- joyment. Realizing that the program of physical fitness in our school is weak, the patrons approved a bond issue in the spring of 1957 for building a new gymnasium which will be large enough to carry out a full program of physical education for every school child. The Grove school board in October awarded a 5134500 contract to Gordon Wilson and Son for construction of this proposed auditorium-gymnasium. Ten acres of land were purchased west of the school for a football field and other further uses. The bus barns were moved to the south part of the new addition to make way for the new building. The present gridiron will be used for playground and parking space. This new building will be a double wall construction of brick and light block. It will house a stage, basketball court, dressing rooms, ticket office, and refreshment stand. There will be ample room in this new gym- nasium for all types of physical fitness pro- grams, and we hope that the coming genera- tions will profit from this step forward in our educational program. An official volley ball team has six players, but in games played merely for exercise ten or more players may play on each side. The game may be played indoors or out. ln some ways volley ball is like tennis. The standard indoor court is thirty feet wide and sixty feet long. A net is stretched across the middle of the court. The top of the net should be eight feet above the floor. The players use a round, light, inflated ball, about twenty-seven inches around. The object of the game is to keep the ball volleying back and forth across the net without letting it rouch the floor. The ball must be batted, and it may not be caught or thrown. William G. Morgan, a gymnasium instructor at the Holyoke fMass.D Young Men's Christian Association, originated volley ball in 1895. Y.M. C.A.'s throughout the country quickly adopted the sport. lt was later developed into an outdoor game. The first national volley tournament was held by the Y.M.C.A. in 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. Thus the game be- came popular throughout the world first through the Y.M.C.A. nlstratlon fi 5 Wx .Tu . 5 Q B .ar g 4 5 Ur' . , ,,, ,Q , .gd ,kwa S Q , , 1 4 2 V. . 3 , X ,, 1 ' ' A ' Q V ,-f-ff r1g'2r'i 'M N - - - 1 I f , g',- .:us 4J- nj:- 17 2 99 vxavfwff Q as--N--.,. November I5 RIDGERUNNERS CLOSE SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH 26-7 VICTORY AT COMMERCE The Ridgerunners scored three times in the second quarter at Commerce in chalking up their seventh conference victory of another successful season. Coach Davis per- mitted his reserves to play most of the second half after the starting squad pushed quickly to the Tigers' 14 yard line on their first possession of the ball. For a year that was supposed to be devoted to rebuilding', the season was a happy one for Grove fans who set a new fecord in home game attendance. The Ridgerunners scored 226 points to their opponents 37 in conference play. C7 J 1 'Y Ping Pong Ping-Pong or Table Tennis is s speedy indoor game. lt is much like lawn tennis on a smaller scale. lt is played on a table top measuring nine by five feet, and standing thirty inches from the floor. A net is stretched across the middle of the table. The net with its supports is six feet long and six inches high. Hollow white celluloid balls are used. The balls weighfrom thirty- seven to thirty-nine grains and they are four and one-half to four and three-quarter inches in circumference. The rackets used in this game are usually made of plywood and surfaced with pebbled rubber, and are ap- proximately rwelve inches long. Twenty-one points are played whether two or four persons play. One ball is served, and hitting the ball before it touches the table is not allowed. The ball must bounce once on the opponent's side of the net before it can be returned by the opponent. When two play, each partner hits the ball in turn. Ping-pong was once just a home game, patented under that name. ln recent years it has become very popular. Champions play exhibitions be- fore large crowds. The United States Table Tennis Association was formed in 1933. Since that time many American players have become famous. ctivities Future Homemakers of Amer- ica is the national organization of pupils who study homemaking in junior and senior high schools. Followers of softball claim that it has more players and draws more spectators than any other sport in the world. The game was originated in 1887 by George W. Hancock of Chicago. Hancock designed the game for indoor play with a sixteen inch ball having seams turned out. lt became a popular game. But it took hold faster as an outdoor game than as an indoor game. Soon after the game was invented it was played on ball diamonds throughout the country. ln 1923 the National Recreation Congress appointed a committee of recreation to draw up rules and standardize the game. The game is now governed by the Amateur Softball Association. Softball takes little equipment, space, or training. Therefore, it is popular with players of all ages. Softball has a leading place in the sports program of playgrounds, recreation centers, schools, industries, and mili- tary groups. Women have taken to the sport, and girls' leagues have been formed throughout the nation. For expert players, two world series are held at the end of each season. One is for men, the other for women. The sport has had many different names, such as indoor baseball, playground ball, diamond-ball, kitten-ball, mush-ball, indoor-outdoor ball, and recre- ation ball. But the name 'softball' is now considered the official title of the sport. Softball, as now played, uses an inseam ball 11 7f8 to 12 U8 inches in circumference. The pitcher's box is forty-three feet from home plate. The base lines are sixty feet long, with a pitching distance of forty-six feet. But softball games differ from baseball in several ways. Softball pitching is done underhand. Nine has become the standard number of players. An official, regulation softball game consists of seven innings. ade School U4 A M31 w V , xr 'q Y' , 'f' f ,gf ..
