That was the day that we let go of our mothers’ hands and began our thirteen long years of preparation and education. We can look back with pride on our accomplishments. Our first class project, the magazine sale net us record profits. Our “Evening in the Orient” was one of G.C.H.S.’s most beautiful proms and had an unprecedented attendance. The senior class joined in laughter one last time at the senior banquet. The awards assembly, baccalaureate, and commencement all passed too quickly. We found that we were no longer seniors, but graduates. It is with pride that we can look at our four years at G.C.H.S. as we travel toward our destinies, we can feel confident that we left behind a lodestar to guide our successors. The senior class nominated 10 girls, of which only one would reign as the 1982 Homecoming Queen. On October 22, Jenni Shaner was crowned the Homecoming Queen of Grove City High School. Our football team proudly defeated the Hickory Hornets, 28 - 0, to make it an even more enjoyable event. The Eagles, led by 17 returning Lettermen, played in a new league-the Keystone Football League and came within one game of winning the League’s 1st Championship. The year was filled with many exciting moments and great individual efforts. The Eagles, led by Tri-Captains Chris Youngo, Tim Nesbit and Curt Conner opened the year with 3 straight wins over Oil City 20-0, Kennedy Christian 12-7, and Greenville 19-6 before losing to a powerful Meadville outfit, 14-13. An attempted 2pt conversion for the victory was unsuccessful and the mighty Eagles tasted defeat for the first time. The Eagles came right back with 4 straight wins over League Foes -beating Sharpsville 13-6, Reynolds 14-0, Farrell 16-7 and Hickory 28-0. It was during 4 game stretch that the Eagles developed a reputation of being a strong 2nd half team-winning 3 of the 4 games with the winning scores coming in the 4th quarter. This set the stage for the Championship Showdown against the Sharon Tigers. With a crowd of over 5,000 football fans looking on- largest in many years in Grove City-the Eagles slow start enabled the Tigers to take a 22-0 lead at half time. But with that “Never-Say-Die” attitude, the Eagles came soaring back in the second half only to fall short in their upset bid-losing 29-14 in one of the most exciting games in recent GCHS history. The Eagles finished the year with a win at Franklin. Giving them an 8-2 record for the year. The boys varsity compiled a record of 12 wins and no defeats during duel meet competition. Over the past two years the boys varsity have compiled a record of 24-0 in Mercer County competition. They also won the Mercer County Championship Meet and placed a disappointing 5th place in district competition. Norm Straub, Mike Mr. Dan Cole, Coach Rossi, Mike Sample, Penn Barger, Bob Frazier, Greg Morris and Lance Reher were the reasons for such an outstanding season. The girls varsity compiled a record of 3 wins and 3 loses. Colleen Dickey, Deborah Conway, Nancy Mason, Colleen Murdock and Darlene Loughner made up a young but competitive group of runners. Colleen Murdock highlighted the girls season by placing 3rd at the Mercer County Championship. There is a good future in store for the girls, but a few more members are needed to add depth, which is important in Cross Country competition. The future looks excellent for both boys and girls. The boys J.V. team totally wiped out all competition at the Mercer County Championship; and Gigi Highland and Becky Sample ran well in most Jr. High Competition. Laura Hamilton, Chris Bulfone, and Dirk VanTil were unable to participate due to injuries but were great supporters by helping run and coordinate all home events. The highlight of the season occurred during the Kiser Classic when the girls rallied from behind to outscore Lakeview, 26 to 6 in the 4th quarter; and defeat the Sailors, 47 to 43 in overtime. This win enabled the girls to advance to the finals where they defeated Franklin, 46 to 41. As the season closed, Karen Yurchison and Cathy Szymarek were named to the first team All County, Carey O’Bannon and Amy Hennon were selected to the second team, while Brenda Tighe received honorable mention recognition.
