Mercer County Champs This year our varsity boys' basketball team again reigned supreme. Led by senior standouts Tom Clarke, Steve Miller, Shawn Dandoy, and Mike Haizlett, juiors Scott Crum and Greg Myford, and freshmen sensation Tim Winbush, the Grove City Eagles earned the title, Mercer County League Champions. Our overall record was 17-10, another outstanding season. This season was highlighted when Tom Clarke broke the school career scoring record previously held by Bob Crow. Tom's total point production for his three years on the varsity team was 1,332. The performances of everyone on the team proved once again that Grove City dominates basketball in Mercer County. 76 Tom Clarke breaks the school's scoring record. G.C. The gridders had some very close defeats which provided for an exciting football season. Coach Bestwick did rely on the seniors quite a bit, but there will be a lot of talented underclassmen lettermen returing for the Eagles. The underclassmen should look forward to a winning season next year. 84 The Junior Varsity Football Team ended its season with a 3-4-1 record, by winning their last 3 games. Again, the games were close, and the Eagles played well throughout the year. The team has some outstanding players who should really be a help to the next Varsity Squad. With a perfect undefeated season last year and three returning veterans, expectations are high that the Eagle golfers will capture the Mercer County Crown as they have in the past. The varsity squad has already displayed its talent as Kurt Gramley and Jim Hagstrom took the 5th and 8th positions at last Fall's District X golf tournament. Qualifying for the state championships at Hershey, Pa., Kurt and Jim placed well despite adverse conditions. Head coach Leonard Clarke anticipates a very successful season despite tough competition in this year's league. 88 Bottom Row: R. Roll, J. Garton, J. Trammell, D. Dailey, S. Crum, D. G.C.H.S. is proud to say that for every match they may have lost, individuals on the team had wins. The team's matches consist of four singles and three doubles. The 1979-1980 tennis team's record was 5 wins and 8 losses. Their coach is Mrs. Lorraine Gilson. 89 Wrestling 1st row: M. Schlossnagel, M. Dubiel, S. Grace, D. Deliere, B. Becker, B. Wrestling has become one of our most popular and exciting sports, and this year was no exception. Although our record was 9-9, all matches had some thrilling moments. The senior tri-captains. Bob Schell, Brad McGill, and Darryl Deliere did an excellent job and had records of 26-4, 27-6, and 20-3 respectively. Junior David Deliere had an outstanding season and ended with a 21-6-1 record. Sophomore Curtis Conner also did a tremendous job and ended the year at 22-7. The wrestlers worked together to provide our fans with a lot of excitement. They should be proud of their efforts. 90 G.C. 25 18 27 40 15 13 22 25 32 41 33 18 38 48 28 27 38 52 Seneca Valley Meadville Lakeview Kennedy Christian Seneca Valley McDowell Gen. This year, Debbie Versteegen of Australia, and Juan Da-villa from Ecuador, are living with Grove City families. Anita Vargas from Mexico, a Rotary exchange student, also spent the year with us. Throughout the year, the club sponsors many activities to help fund their project. With Mrs. Christie advising, they hold pizza sales, the Valentine's Day carnation sale, and, of course, the annual A.F.S. dance each spring. The club also organizes International Day, when A.F.S. students from nearby communities share stories of their homeland with us. A.F.S. Participation is limited to those students in their second, third or fourth year of French. At each meeting, the French national anthem is sung, and the Pledge of Allegiance is recited in French, thereby giving the students a little extra knowledge of the language. Mrs. Christie is the club advisor. Each year the French IV club, under the guidance of Mrs. Christie, organizes various projects in order to help finance their annual trip to Quebec, Canada. Among these are the Chicken and Biscuit dinners, the selling of candy, and, with the aid of the community, the glass drives. The club consists of seniors in any year of French.
