Behind us is nearly two centuries of priceless American heritage. That which lies ahead is shrouded with mystery. The future is merely clay which must be shaped and molded. Education and its accompanying activities have helped to form the necessary skills, to shape this clay, a bit more perfect with each generation. Eagles Capture County Class “A” Title With a year under his belt, Head Coach Joe Youngo went out in August anticipating a great season. From the first practice in August till the last in October, the Eagles knew they had what it takes. Starting on the 19th of August, the Eagles began their winning ways as they easily rolled over Kennedy Christian (22-6). Their next opponent. Meadville. had boasted of an easy victory over the Eagles as they were favored, but the Eagles went into the game full of fire and came off the field with an impressive 40-8 romp over a stunned Meadville team. Oil City easily fell to the fired up Eagles 22-6. Pausing only one brief week, the Eagles were temporarily slowed down at Reynolds in a 14-14 deadlock. However, the pace setting Eagles quickly picked up momentum by overpowering the Titusville eleven by 6-0 in a tight Homecoming game. The high flying Eagles never lessened the pace as they ran over the powerful Franklin Knights 30-6. The next game was a heated county contest with Greenville, but the Eagles smashed the favored Greenville team 24-0. Once again Grove City and Sharpsville. being a stiff opponent, played to a scoreless tie. It was do or die against Hickory for the County Class “A” Title. The enthusiastic Eagles went onto the field and came off with a thrilling 20-14 victory over Hickory. The Grove City team ended the season with a remarkable 6-0-2 season. Defensively the Eagles allowed only one touchdown on the ground. The Eagles had an average of 19 points per game as their opponents were limited to an average of 6 points per game. Trackmen Have 5-3 Record—Set 4 Records Coach John Hummel again started his track team in expectation that his team would have a good season. Starting off high, the Eagles defeated the PJR 117-33. and defeated Slippery Rock 99' 2 to 49' 2. However, the Eagles track men took it on the chin for the next three meets as they went down in defeat to Reynolds 76-74 in a heartbreaker, Greenville 97-53. and to Hickory 106-44. No team that has as much talent as the Eagles can take that many defeats and not have a comeback. The Eagles came back to smash the Panthers from Commodore Perry 110-31. Once the Eagles had the taste of victory and it was too sweet to give up as they defeated Sharon's Kennedy Christian Golden Eagles 92-58, and almost completely sank the Sailors of Lakeview 120-30. There were four school records set in the 1969 season. In the 2 mile relay Mike McCall, Randy Himes, Dick Simon, and Ray Altmas ran to an unbelievable time of 8.23, to place first in the District Track Competition and sixth in state. In the discus, Don Carpentar hurdled the discus 144 feet ' 2 inches. The 120 yard high hurdles were next on the school records, made by John McCoy with a time of 16.4 seconds. Next in the Triple Jump, there were two boys who tied with the same jumping distance. They were Frank Mong and Tom Brown with a distance of 40 feet 83 . inches. The GCHS team didn’t have any home meets this year because of the condition of their track. The ninth grade track team had a perfect record with 5-0. The Junior High team has three years of unblemished records. Front Row: Stanley Welton. Laurence Shaw, Rick Wilson, Jeff Haynes, Tom Brown. Second Row: Pat Forese, Tim Perry, Steve Wolfe. Coach Noel’s final record this year was 13 wins and 2 losses. Grove City lost only to the Hornets of Hickory, 954 to 5' 2, and to the Sharpsville Blue Devils, 12-3. The bright side of the putters of Grove City was the 13 wins as they defeated Kennedy Christian 1254 to 354; following up they struck down the Trojans of Greenville 854 to 754; not stopping, they gave Slippery Rock Rockets a 14-1 thrashing. Greenville’s second meeting proved to be quite the same as the first as they were defeated 8-7. However, all good things came to an end as Hickory dealt the first defeat 954 to 5' 2, but Grove City’s golfers thrashed West Middlesex 15-0. Once again Grove City had a bitter taste of defeat left in their mouth as they were downed by Sharpsville for their second and last loss of the year with a score of 12-3.
