NIAL MCCAMEY , Advisor GROVE CITY JOINT CONSOLIDATED FOREWORD With the completion of this 40th Edition of the Grove City Pine Knot, there is a printed, accumulative record of the people and events that have helped make GCHS what it is. There are fond memories in this book which are dedicated to you, the student, past and present. Senior High Principal Dr. Jack B. Hetrick. Superintendent I wish to congratulate the Staff on a task well done in making available for years to come, the highlights of this school year. In the years to come when the students whose activities are described in this book are scattered far and wide, this record will become increasingly treasured. Whatever you as seniors do in the days ahead, if you are going to grow and succeed you must have a desire to do so. To make your goal a reality, you must plan carefully your course of action. To complete your plan you must have the will to follow through and be definite. Set a deadline, a time limit, and stay with it. Our best wishes go with you as you apply these rules to your Mr. Robert McMichael, Junior High Principal It used to be that some people, upon the completion of high school or college, considered themselves to “have acquired an education.” Some even felt that their diplomas exempted them from the necessity of further learning. Now, almost everyone realizes the folly of such an attitude. There has never been a time when education was more necessary to the happiness and success of individuals. The great reduction in the need for manual laborers and the rise in the need for educated and skilled people of all kinds presents our culture with one of its greatest challenges. During your lifetimes, your knowledge and skills will have to be supplemented in many ways, both through formal and informal means. You will need to keep learning. We hope that in due time, you will join the ranks of those adults who understand the problem of improving educational opportunity in our country and that you will support movements toward the end. Our sincerest wish for your success and happiness accompany you as you leave Grove City Area High Sincere congratulations to you for completing your high school career. During these school years you have learned the necessity for co-operation, perseverance, independence, and a willingness to accept responsibility. May the lessons and the skills developed during your school days be ever helpful to you. 8 PERSONNEL OFFICE Mr. Wayne Gregg Business Manager Miss Judy McCool Secretary to Dr. J. B. Words and their usage change even while we are writing and talking. New words are constantly appearing and old ones are dying out. Words for expressing yourself are found by visiting new places, meeting new people, and reading books, magazines and newspapers. Language has through the years always posed a social barrier that only study and patience can cleave. To understand better the problems of our ever shrinking world, the Grove City schools have provided an opportunity for developing linguistic achievement, and to create an appreciation of customs throughout the world. Languages offered are English, Latin, French, and Spanish. Mrs. Kathy Miller; English Miss Sally Soppitt; English American Field Service Adviser Mrs. Lucille Horne; English Mrs. Mary Louise Christie; English, French French Club Adviser Mr. Nial McCamcy; English, Sales, Law Pine Knot and Grover Star Adviser Miss Joan Stuck; English 10 Mr. Robert Gates; English, Latin Mr. Anthony Orsillo; Spanish Spanish Club Adviser Mr. Arthur Brown; Spanish Mrs. Josephine Steffee; English Mrs. Agnes Davis; English, General Business Mrs. Eleanor Kellogg; English Mrs. Alice Ketler; English 11 SCIENCE Today new discoveries, inventions, and changes are being made to improve our daily living. Many advancements have been made in the field of science, such as lengthening our life span and searching for cures for everything from cancer to the common cold. Everyday larger and more improved satellites are launched, furthering the space program of our country. Keeping in step, Grove City High School offers biology, the science of life; chemistry, the science of composition and transformation of substances; and physics, the study of matter and its motions. A variety of business subjects are offered to enable the student to choose what field he prefers. The courses offered include typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, clerical and office practice, sales and law. 14 Mr. Joseph Hrdeky; Algebra, Math Mrs. Eleanor Niece; Business MATHEMATICS In beginning any new study, you are interested in knowing what the study is about and why you should study it. Mathematics is the use of applications of logical reasoning to everyday decisions and discussions. As our knowledge of mathematics increases, we are able to advance far into the space age and other fields of science. Every day new ideas and symbols appear to test the use and knowledge of mathematics. Without mathematics, our nation couldn’t have progressed as far as it has today. Mr. James Hassel; Geometry, Algebra 15 Mr. Dan Remley; Mathematics Mr. Norbert Dennis; Algebra, Trigonometry SOCIAL STUDIES To activate an interest, knowledge and understanding of the people of the world, and to show the student how civilization can be bettered through this, is the main principle of the social studies course. In studying world cultures the sophomores are furnished a broad scope of the world as it is at the present; whereas the juniors in American History are given a chance to go into more explicitly the material taught to them in earlier years. The seniors study in problems of democracy the principles of our governmental system, and the items currently pertaining to it. Mr. William Snyder: History Dramatics Club Adviser Mr. James Petrunyak; Geography Mr. Frederick Crum; Civics Miss Clara McCarl; History, Notehand Future Teachers of America Adviser Mr. John Hummel; American History 16 Mr. Samuel Williamson; History Mr. John Kineston; Problems of Democracy Mr. Richard Noel; Geography Mr. Abe Ruben; World Cultures Mr. Leonard Clarke; History, Guidance 17 Mr. Donald Gill; Geography Mr. Edward Reddinger; History FINE ARTS AND Fine Arts and Industrial Arts Departments acquaint students with their many times hidden creative abilities, and enables them, with proper guidance, to put this potential to use. Our three departments, art, music, and industrial arts help the ever mounting need of self-expression to be released. In classes a student learns to take part in activities; to play as best as he can; and to win or lose with dignity. During the year the boys participate in tumbling, volleyball, rope work, track, and the other seasonal sports. The girls take part in tumbling and volleyball plus modern and square dancing, badminton, basketball and softball. Mr. Eugene Forker; Health, History Student Council Adviser Mr. Earl Zinkham; Physical Education 22 Mrs. Coralee Armstrong; Physical Education, Health Girl's Athletic Association Adviser Majorette and Cheerleader Adviser HOME ECONOMICS Home economics courses provide a homelike atmosphere in school for girls who want to further their education in fields concerning the management and everyday needs of the home. Not only does the student learn the fundamentals of sewing and cooking, but also she acquires efficiency and self-confidence in everything she docs. The pre-clinic course is designed to prepare future nurses and teachers. During the first semester, the girls study foods and its value to the body. In lab preparation of different dishes, the students can see their book studies turn to reality. Second semester the course of study turns to home care of the sick, home problems, and care of children. Carolyn and Carol, is everything checked and ready to go? This copy needs retyped. How do you spell Gawzdauskas? Will we make the deadline? Sounds maddening but it all quieted down when the 1964 Pine Knot was sent to Keller presses. With Coach John Hummel at the helm, the Gold and White recorded five wins and four losses. Statistic wise the Eagles plowed across the gridiron to chalk up a total offense of 2,088 yards. Three hundred and four of these were gained through the passing ability of the Grovers while 1,784 yards were netted in rushing plays. Ninty-one first downs were made by the Gold and White. Grove City High School’s Eagles opened their 1963 football season with a 19-6 victory over the Rochester Rams. This is the fourth time in as many games that the Eagles have beaten the Rams. The first half belonged to the Eagles with the Gold and White scoring two touchdowns and one extra point while holding the Rams at bay. In the second half Rochester scored what was to be their only touchdown. Chuck Chanadet came back with a 50 yard T.D. run to make the score 12-6. Greg Sturgeon scored Eagle touchdowns with Jim Ferguson supplying the extra point. Grove City’s whole defensive team was outstanding in stopping Rochester. Jim Ferguson ( 18) breaks through for a gain. Don Wygal ( 31) moves up to head off opponets. GCHS 13—Meadville 12 . . . this game saw the two teams meeting for the 21st time. By winning the contest the Eagle’s record is now 11-7-3. Meadville proved to be a worthy opponent for Grove City as they led the Gold and White in first downs, passing, and yardage. A 58 yard run by the Bulldogs gave Meadville the first T.D. Early in the second quarter Chuck Chanadet made his first touchdown and in the third his second to put GCHS in the lead. An interception by Meadville 13 plays later set the Bulldogs up for the last T.D. Jim Ferguson’s interception and several long runs by Greg Sturgeon were some of the outstanding plays. 135 Ball carrier Jim Ferguson ( 18) advances down the field as Mike King ( 59) throws block. GCHS 19—Oil City 13 . . . this encounter provided the Eagle fans with one of the most exciting games of the year. Grove City won the toss and elected to kick off. Oil City fumbled on their own 20 yard line and it was recovered by the Eagles. Bill Gills took it over two plays later with only 1 minute and 21 seconds in the game. John McNees scored from the four in the second quarter, and Chuck Chanadet broke loose for 20 yards and the score in the fourth quarter. Bill Gills led the Eagle’s ground attack with 104 yards of GC’s 294 yards and carried the ball 24 times of the 74 rushing plays. GCHS 13—Mercer 15 .. . this put Grove City’s winning habits to an end and gave Mercer their first victory over the Eagles since 1952. The Gold and White made 14 first downs and gained a total of 287 yards to out do Mercer in everything but the score. Bob Savolskis carried the pigskin over from the two to open the scoring. The Mustangs came back with a field goal and two TD’s before Chuck Chanadet chalked up a touchdown for his team. Outstanding plays included a twenty yard run by Bill Gills and an interception by John McNees. The Greg Sturgeon—John Merritt passing unit helped the cause by gaining 50 yards of the gridiron. Bill Gills ( 49) runs into snare, John McNees ( 39) and Greg Sturgeon move up. GCHS 19—Franklin 20 . . . 1963 Homecoming found Franklin on the home gridiron. The Knights played another “tooth and nail” game as they edged the Eagles by one point for the second year in a row. Statistics were in favor of Grove City, but Franklins’ extra point told the story. Bill Gills scored two of Grove City’s TD’s. Bill sprinted 67 yards for one of his TD’s. A pass from Greg Sturgeon to Ron Pearce accounted for the Eagles third touchdown. Paving the way for two of Grove City’s TD's were Larry Mathieson and Dave Bartholomew. Larry recovered a Franklin fumble and Dave intercepted a pass. Dick Houston ( 77), John Merritt ( 84) and teammate drive opponent out of bounds. GCHS 12—Titusville 7 . . . with this encounter the Eagles jumped back into the winning column. The hard fighting Rockets made a good showing, although most of the game was played in Titusville territory. Titusville was the first to hit pay dirt, but a 46 yard touchdown play with the Eagles’ Ron Pearce making the honors tightened the score. In the third quarter Bill Gills crossed the goal line for GCHS' second TD. A key play in the final seconds of the game was made by Jim Ferguson when he intercepted a Rocket pass near GC’s goal. During the game the Grovers picked up 13 first downs and gained 294 yards. Greg Sturgeon ( 19) goes out ahead of opposing host as John McNees ( 39) paves the way. GCHS 0—Greenville 33 ... a strong Greenville defense, an overpowering offense, and Eagle injuries brought about the one-sided score of this game. This shutout marked the first time an Eagle team has been white-washed in 41 games over the last five seasons. Greenville held the Eagles to three first downs, and 87 yards with their brick wall defense. Grove City could not stop the Trojan momentum and long runs accounted for all the Trojan touchdowns. Outstanding plays were turned in by Dave Mullen and Tom Thomas who recovered fumbles in the early moments of the game. Eagle regulars who were on the sidelines with injuries were Mike King, Dave Bartholomew, and Chuck Chanadet. John McNees ( 39) capitalizes on block for yardage. Ron Filer ( 65) waits for advance. Bob Savolskis ( 48) and Ron Pearce ( 88) prepare to down ball carrier as Alec Miller ( 89) goes down. GCHS 6—Hickory 0 . . . this victory made the Eagles record 5 and 4 for the season and it marks the sixth straight season that Grove City has had a winning team. The game was highlighted with sparkling defense from both teams throughout the first three scoreless quarters. Grove City made its first sustained drive when Jerry Dunn recovered a Hickory fumble only to be held at bay by Hickory linemen. The Hornets then started a drive which proved to be the longest of the game for Hickory, but Mike King recovered a Hornet fumble on the 46 yard line. The Eagles made a 54 yard drive in 18 plays which was climaxed by Bill Gills’ plunge from the two yard line with only forty-five seconds remaining in the game. GCHS 6—Sharpsville 12 .. . this marked another of the surprise ending games that Grove City has had with Sharpsville. The Eagles fought down to the last second for a victory, but could not pull it off. In the opening moments Larry Mathieson recovered a fumble to start the Gold and White on the way to the goal. Eleven plays later Bill Gills scrambled into the end zone to give the Eagles their lone TD. From here to the middle of the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils made several attempts on GC’s goal, but they were stopped by the interceptions of Jim Ferguson, Greg Sturgeon, and an unmoving line. Grove City secured 6 first downs, and gained 130 yards. Bill Gills ( 49) stopped after long gain. Alec Miller ( 89) attempts to move around obstacle. Titusville revenged their earlier loss by beating Grove City in their own court.
